NJ Gov. Christie hospitalized because of difficulty breathing

AP

Chris Christie (R-NJ) was hospitalized after experience difficulty breathing, related to asthma, his office says.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) was hospitalized with “difficulty breathing,” his office confirms to WNBC’s Brian Thompson.

Here’s a statement from Christie Press Secretary Michael Drewniak:

"Governor Christie was having difficulty breathing this morning and out of an abundance of caution he went to Somerset Medical Center to be checked out. In line with someone dealing with asthma, he is being given routine tests as a precautionary measure. The Governor is extremely grateful for the quality of care he is receiving this morning and has nothing but praise for the world-class doctors, nurses and staff."

*** UPDATE *** Thompson has more:
While it is not known if this is an asthmatic attack at this point, a source close to the governor confirms Christie has suffered from asthma for years.

"He carries an inhaler with him," this source told NBC New York.

He also noted that the governor's weight doesn't help his health issues.

***UPDATE*** WNBC's Pat Battle has more:
The Christie team is attributing this incident to complications from asthma. He will reportedly be released this evening and will return to the state house tomorrow.

His wife, Mary Pat, is expected to attend their son's baseball game tonight, as planned.

 ***UPDATE***
Christie has left the hospital. He tells reporters he will be back to work Friday.

Frank:

Agreed. I think he has a History of Asthma and I hope that is all it is. With his weight heart problems and diabetes may be an issue. Lets hope not, not that Asthma is a good thing but it is better than the other options.

Really sad to see some of the comments below. Here is a guy who is married with 4 children and suffers from asthma and he's taken to the hospital. And what's the response from many of those who don't like his politics?? Let's make fat jokes. Classy!!

Look above to Navy, Indy Lib, and Tunde. They may not agree with his politics but they wish him well.

Should he get his weight a bit under control? Yeah, if he wants to live longer and be healthy. But asthma isn't just an affliction of smokers or people who are overweight. I have asthma as well. But, I have never smoked and consider myself to be in pretty good shape, having run 2 marathons and quite a few half marathons. So as Navy said so well below, wish him well, move on, and when he recovers have at his politics.

Christie has acknowledged that his girth is a personal challenge. I applaud his attempt to deal with it. We like him, mostly, here in NJ (with a few unsurprising exceptions from certain factions), and even for the fringes, I think everyone hopes he recovers. If not for anything but humanitarian reasons.

Gonna go out on a limb and say that he did not have to get a referral form his primary, and then wait in the emergency room for hours while he filled out forms. Of course he got the best treatment from those wonderful Drs and Nurses

How dare this anti-Government, Party of No member, get Cadillac healthcare?

He has taken care of his body as though he is a Public Housing, Section 8, member of the Poor.

Just because his is a fat, Reichwing Republicon, does not mean that he deserves better healthcare than other Americans.

Christie is an intolerable bully. However, I truly hope that he not only recovers, but recognizes that he must make a serious attempt to improve his health. I hope this youngster will adopt a proper and healthy diet and take the time to exercise.

I want him to live a long and rich life, to enjoy the beauty and wonder of life, to enjoy his children, to appreciate all the gifts of nature.

I want him to outlive this bully phase and understand that everyone should be able to have the same kind of care he is now receiving.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Governor. May you live to be healthy, wealthy, AND wise.

I think Christies weight is definitely worth discussing...especially given our healthcare dilema.

You can all pretend that blowing up like porky pig only affects you, but thats a giant joke (pun intended).

Glad to know he got a fast pass to the front of the line to be looked at. The rest of the america is not so lucky...and many of us take care of our health infinitely better than this slob has.

Am I mean? No...simply honest.

Best wishes.

Just wanted to make two observations.

It is distressing to see somebody so heavy and especially because so many depend on him to be well. So the question isn't whether it is hard for him to keep his weight off, because that is true for many of us, but why isn't he doing more to deal with it? Much like Huckabee that is also rotund, and again important contributors in our society, they just laugh about their weight, and do nothing.

I have a neighbor that works for the government as an environmental specialist and is very concerned about the damage humans are doing to the planet. This is a very capable, bright, individual that smokes like a chimney. So he is concerned about the planet, but not the least bit willing to put that same effort into his own health. Now explain that to me. What is worse, is how many warnings he has had in the past couple years and still won't give up the cigs.

Both of these men will NOT live to see any grandchildren if they don't change their behavior ASAP. What in the world are the waiting for?

I haven't condoned anyone putting a gun to his head. But if he keels over from being a lard-ass, it's his own fault. And since he's such an evil uncaring bastard towards his own constituents, well then he get's what he deserves TWO times over.

And to TheBoys... This is man who doesn't just not care about his own health. He doesn't care about the health of others as well. Something you should have considered when writing your statement.

Now, I can already hear you say "uh, joking". Joking or no, I have NO TOLERANCE for deathwishing. I mean, how is this state any different from that pastor praying that Obama gets brain cancer? It's stuff like that that excites the Jared Loughners of the world.

Because it's not. If karma were true, bums would ride stallions in Central Park. Are there any other fantasies any of you would like to share? It may be the corpulent governor's karma, to suffer from such debility at such a young age (48). All "karma" is is a wish for retribution by those whom learn other forms of retribution are futile.

Who are any of us to guard against upsetting any "Jared Laughners?" Are we now to live in fear of angering psychos?

The money that Christie spent (and paid back out of his own pocket) in a helicopter doesn't even come CLOSE to how much Obama has wasted. And there's the problem in a nutshell, folks. There can be no compromise for some people because they don't believe there is any middle ground. People like Brian (and the "radical" Republicans he rails against) have this simplistic Weltanschauung where the world is just a huge, savage, Manichean battlefield where the personal is political and everybody is either an unwitting dupe or an ogreish bit player in the Conspiracy™.

Or wonder how Rove can worry about Bachmann's migraine headaches while others in the GOP/TP keep trying to get Christie to run for POTUS. Or wonder how either Bachmann or Christie can be so anti-health care reform, other than to conclude they have their good coverage so don't care about the rest of us. Pat's comment may have been a bit artless, but, one can't deny that his health is suffering due to his weight - whether the official cause is 'asthma' or not. His weight is certainly an exacerbating factor n whatever is the underlying cause.

That's a myth. It was caused by the coronor stating it appeared she was lying down, eating a ham sandwich and drinking a coke when she died, but the cause of death was heart attack caused by fatty degeneration of the heart muscle. Nothing was blocking her mouth or throat.

It's been reported that Gov. Christie weighed 550 pounds when he was elected and has been working on diet and exercise to lose weight. I can't fathom anyone getting their weight up to 550 - I gained 10 frikking pounds over the winter and almost went into shock! (AHH!! Muffin top!!) I couldn't lose it fast enough! And I'm sticking to a diet and workout routine (yeah, yeah, I cheat just like everyone else now and then - those brownies were calling my name!!) so I don't have to go through that again!!

Listen to the "classless comments" from those on the right posting here. For two and a half years the vile hate and ugly talk about our President goes non-stop. This obnoxious, self-serving blow-hard of a Governor can't control when he puts in his mouth and the obvious happens. Face it, this guy is going to die young. He's fat, has a miserable disposition (he's a hater), obviously can't stop shoving food down his throat, and doesn't exercise. For Christ sakes he took a helicopter to his son's game and then needed a limo to go 50 yards instead of walking. In life you reap what you sow - sad but true.

Now he's going to get the finest care for his fat arse that money can buy while at the same time stealing and limiting healthcare for the middle class and working New Jersey families.

              Priceless.

He took a limo to travel 100 yards to his son's baseball diamond. Exercise and a decent diet wouldn't hurt the man. With all his protestations I will say that he must be aware enough to realize his body could not take the stress of the presidency.

                Hugh,

Just a few examples of weight jokes against Ted Kennedy.

I would also say that having an asthma attack is a little bit less life threatening than brain cancer

"After the switch, the Democrats would have 51 seats, the Republicans would have 49 seats, and Senator Ted Kennedy would still need four seats." —Craig Kilborn, on the changeover in power in the Senate

"My kids just brought home a beautiful pumpkin, but you know what? I'm going to return it because it's a Democratic pumpkin. It has the orange color of John Kerry's tan, and the roundness of Teddy Kennedy," said the Republican governor.

Discussing Sen. Ted Kennedy's endorsement of Sen. Barack Obama, Glenn Beck asked Republican strategist Amy Holmes, "[Y]ou ever just pictured Ted Kennedy naked?" Beck added, "[Y]ou know, that picture with him with his shirt off just kind of pops into your head. And you're like, 'OK, I won't have children now.' "

lets see a overweight gov has breathing issues. So the State of New Jersey is making sure he gets the best of care. Now lets see if the Gove will give the citizens of New Jersey the same health care he just got. Odds are no. So the question is Why is New jersey giving the Gov top noch health care and not the rest of its citizens?

Yea he will get better and go back to work abusing the citizens of the state hes is suppose to be working for.

If politics and health weren't related the Tea Party Republicans wouldn't be vowing to kill health care reform, social security, medicare, unemployment benefits, EPA requirements etc.

Of course health care and politics are inextricable at least in this day and age. The politicians in this country have seen to that.

Too bad so many extremists here equate your dislike of someone's actions and policies to thinking you want them to die. They just don't seem to realize that unless you personally know someone there is now way to "hate" that person, only what they do.

As for the gov: Dude, time to drop some pounds and get some more exercise. You do want to be around for your kids and grandkids? I know it's rough because I'm trying to fight the same "middle age spread" myself.

It really does come down to character. And probably upbringing.

You can disagree, fight , battle, yell and even scream, but disagreements and differing points of view are such small matters in comparison with the really important stuff. Life, Family, Love.

To wish ill health on others, or be happy because someone you disagree with is ill speaks volumes about character, and who you are. It also show you never learned to golden rule, or is this how you all want to be treated? Somehow I suspect not.

It's all about perspective, right Navy and Frank.

Sadly, it looks like so many here simply lack that perspective, or apparently an understanding about how Karma works.

                        Thanks Indy.

Politics is a fun diversion, but health and particularly sickness is something entirely different. I might not like Navy, of Feisty's or anyone's position, but I would never wish ill will upon them. In fact I appreciate them and their positions. If we were all alike, it'd be mighty boring.

Personally I live this stuff everyday. Litigation is a battle. All sides fight tooth and nail, and to the end.

But it all ends at the end of the case. Plus it is important to be civil at all times. Chances are you will see that attorney again, and sometimes on the same side. It's one thing to hate the job someones doing, another to actually hate the person. Life is too short to hate people.

To me these negative posts really show a lack of maturity.

But hey - it's their life.

To most of the folks who are always here on First Read, we will, in all likelyhood, probably never agree on politics but after seeing these posts, I'm glad that we do agree that situations like this should be above politics and arguing and that first and foremost we are all human beings and Americans.

For what it's worth, no matter how much we argue or disagree, you have my respect.

As do I. And that debate must continue; because all his policies have brought us so far are lost jobs, poorer education - not that his kids have to suffer since they go to private schools, and more tax breaks for corporations and the wealthy.

I am please Gov Christie is pleased with the first class health care he is receiving (at the tax payers expense by the way). Don't you wish every citizen in this country had access to the same kind of care - or is it just for Republicans?

I'm no fan of this man and his unapologetic hatred. HOWEVER, he is suffering like anyone else and deserves compassion.

The kind of compassion he has shown to the residence of his state? Maybe this will make him realize how lucky he is to have medical care, and he will see the light. I know, I am just seeing the movie " Scrooge " and hope for the same outcome, but I doubt it. He should quit his job and spend time with his family and a treadmill so he can watch his children grow up.

I wouldn't call having breathing difficulty"suffering." If it is, than most obese people suffer. It go's the the territory

I don't wish the man harm but looking at his super sized girth is painful.  It's a wonder that he hasn't had other health problems.

With that said,  he's the perfect picture of American excess.  People voted him in office just so they'd feel svelte.  He maybe a good political leader but he's not exactly someone I hold up to my children as a model of good health.

He had to win political office because he knows with the weight he's carrying around that when the Republicans kill Social security, medicare and health care that he'll be well taken care of by the taxes paid by NJ citizens.   Their are people in Newark starving and killing themselves and each other to make ends meet while this guy sits there looking like Henry the VIII.  Oh yeah, and isn't gluttony a sin?

Seriously, I'll bet that he smells terrible from sweating a lot. Have you ever had to sit next to someone like that while flying commercial? Not only do they smell, but their arms flop over to the seat next to them. And the snoring! Fatties snore like a bear.

People like Christi should have to pay for 2 seats. I'm so tired of hearing about the rights of obese people. How about the rights of the thin?
