Wealth gap widens, but minorities continue to support President Obama

The wealth gap between whites and blacks in America is wider than it has been in a generation, but it doesn’t seem to be hurting President Obama politically.

Whites now have 20 times the net worth of blacks and 18 times that of Hispanics, as compared to a ratio of 7 to 1 from whites to both groups in 1995, when the U.S.’s economic expansion boosted many underprivileged groups to the middle class, according to an analysis of Census data released Tuesday by the Pew Research Center. That’s the widest gap in 27 years, since U.S. government began recording the wealth gap between whites and minorities.

In terms of total decrease in net worth, Hispanics have been affected most adversely, with a decrease of 66% from 2005 to 2009. The net worth of black families decreased 53% in the same period, as compared to a 16% drop for whites.

Analysts of the data report that the white-minority gap can be partially explained by the fact that whites have invested more in stocks and corporate savings, while younger Hispanics and African-Americans have invested more in homes, and therefore have seen significant losses. With an exceedingly stalled housing market, this wealth gap may widen even further.

"The findings are a reminder, if one was needed, of what a large share of blacks and Hispanics live on the economic margins," said Paul Taylor, director of Pew Social & Demographic Trends. "When the economy tanked, they're the groups that took the heaviest blows."

These studies emerge in the midst of the debt ceiling debate, in which Obama and congressional leaders must arrive at a decision to cut deficits and raise the debt ceiling or run the risk of seeing the U.S. default on its financial obligations -- all by the deadline of August 2nd. Last week, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) met with Obama and urged him to avoid making cuts to housing assistance or safety net programs, claiming such cuts would disproportionately hurt minorities. It remains to be seen if this plea, and the study presented by the Pew Research Center, will have an impact on the August 2nd decision.

Still, despite these data and Republicans, like Michele Bachmann and Mitt Romney pointing out how minorities have been adversely affected in this economy, blacks and Hispanics appear firmly in Obama’s corner. In the latest NBC News-Wall Street Journal poll, released last week, the president’s overall job approval was split with 47% approving and 48% disapproving. But those numbers spiked among Hispanics and African Americans. Hispanics approved 56%-39%, and blacks were an even stronger 88%-7%.

Those numbers have held pretty steady since the president took office. Provided they remain that way, that support could give Obama a measure of insulation in next year’s election that might not be enjoyed by other presidents in a similar economy.

One more reason that we should stop putting our investments into Wall Street and invest in the local businesses on Main Street. Wall Street has convinced common people to put their retirement money in investing in them. They convinced school districts and local governments to invest in them. Then the crash, which was incidental or accidental, and will definitely be cyclical as long as you buy into this "too good to be true" scam. The only hope is to return Wall Street to the rich man's gambling club it once was and start investing in the small guys with the new ideas to create the new jobs and keep them here. To HELL with the Global Corporations, monopolies, and dinosaur sized banks. Stop dealing with them and deal with your community. It's the only way to stop that pack of thieves!

It is like Bill Maher had said once,  are you going to side with a friend that disappoints or with an intractable enemy. Allegiance with the rightwinger will certainly not make for improvement, it makes no more sense than washing a turd.

Arizona, so we are on the losing side, huh. Well, your opinion is not worth the price of a cup of coffee and a donut. We already know what YOUR SIDE has in store for everyone whose name is not Thurston Howell III. I am more than sastified with the side that I have taken, thanks.

Maybe it is time to pull your head out and not be so much of a dupe to the rightwing fascists that you are clearly putting upon a pedestal.

This is from the Wall Street Journal which makes it even more interesting. They were once in his camp.

Wall Street Journal Sizes up Obama - They've Got Him Figured Out

A short article from the Wall Street Journal that needs to be read by every level headed American!!!

A "deadly" article regarding Obama, at the Wall Street Journal, which today is the most widely circulated newspaper in America .
Article from the Wall Street Journal - by Eddie Sessions:

"I have this theory about Barack Obama. I think he's led a kind of make-believe life in which money was provided and doors were opened because at some point early on somebody or some group took a look at this tall, good looking, half-white, half-black, young man with an exotic African/Muslim name and concluded he could be guided toward a life in politics where his facile speaking skills could even put him in the White House.

In a very real way, he has been a young man in a very big hurry. Who else do you know has written two memoirs before the age of 45? "Dreams of My Father" was published in 1995 when he was only 34 years old. The "Audacity of Hope" followed in 2006 - if, indeed, he did write them himself. There are some who think that his mentor and friend, Bill Ayers, a man who calls himself a "communist with a small 'c'" was the real author.

His political skills consisted of rarely voting on anything that might be deemed controversial. He went from a legislator in the Illinois legislature to the Senator from that state because he had the good fortune of having Mayor Daley's formidable political machine at his disposal.

He was in the U.S. Senate so briefly that his bid for the presidency was either an act of astonishing self-confidence or part of some greater game plan that had been determined before he first stepped foot in the Capital. How, many must wonder, was he selected to be a 2004 keynote speaker at the Democrat convention that nominated John Kerry when virtually no one had ever even heard of him before?

He outmaneuvered Hillary Clinton in primaries. He took Iowa by storm. A charming young man, an anomaly in the state with a very small black population, he oozed "cool" in a place where agriculture was the antithesis of cool. He dazzled the locals. And he had an army of volunteers drawn to a charisma that hid any real substance.

And then he had the great good fortune of having the Republicans select one of the most inept candidates for the presidency since Bob Dole. And then John McCain did something crazy. He picked Sarah Palin, an unknown female governor from the very distant state of Alaska . It was a ticket that was reminiscent of 1984's Walter Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro and they went down to defeat.

The mainstream political media fell in love with him. It was a schoolgirl crush with febrile commentators like Chris Mathews swooning then and now over the man. The venom directed against McCain and, in particular, Palin, was extraordinary.

Now, nearly a full 2 years into his first term, all of those gilded years leading up to the White House have left him unprepared to be President. Left to his own instincts, he has a talent for saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. It swiftly became a joke that he could not deliver even the briefest of statements without the ever-present Tele-Prompters.

Far worse, however, is his capacity to want to "wish away" some terrible realities, not the least of which is the Islamist intention to destroy America and enslave the West. Any student of history knows how swiftly Islam initially spread. It knocked on the doors of Europe, having gained a foothold in Spain .

The great crowds that greeted him at home or on his campaign "world tour" were no substitute for having even the slightest grasp of history and the reality of a world filled with really bad people with really bad intentions.

Oddly and perhaps even inevitably, his political experience, a cakewalk, has positioned him to destroy the Democrat Party's hold on power in Congress because in the end it was never about the Party. It was always about his communist ideology, learned at an early age from family, mentors, college professors, and extreme leftist friends and colleagues.

Obama is a man who could deliver a snap judgment about a Boston police officer who arrested an "obstreperous" Harvard professor-friend, but would warn Americans against "jumping to conclusions" about a mass murderer at Fort Hood who shouted "Allahu Akbar." The absurdity of that was lost on no one. He has since compounded this by calling the Christmas bomber "an isolated extremist" only to have to admit a day or two later that he was part of an al Qaeda plot.

He is a man who could strive to close down our detention facility at Guantanamo even though those released were known to have returned to the battlefield against America . He could even instruct his Attorney General to afford the perpetrator of 9/11 a civil trial when no one else would ever even consider such an obscenity. And he is a man who could wait three days before having anything to say about the perpetrator of yet another terrorist attack on Americans and then have to elaborate on his remarks the following day because his first statement was so lame.

The pattern repeats itself. He either blames any problem on the Bush administration or he naively seeks to wish away the truth.

Knock, knock. Anyone home? Anyone there? Barack Obama exists only as the sock puppet of his handlers, of the people who have maneuvered and manufactured this pathetic individual's life.

When anyone else would quickly and easily produce a birth certificate, this man has spent over a million dollars to deny access to his. Most other documents, the paper trail we all leave in our wake, have been sequestered from review. He has lived a make-believe life whose true facts remain hidden.

We laugh at the ventriloquist's dummy, but what do you do when the dummy is President of the United States of America ?"

I don't get it. What's with the "but minorities continue to support President Obama"? Of course minorities support President Obama, and why not?

The only thing Republicans are willing to do is to make rich people richer, and, given half a chance, the GOP will gladly steal their Social Security money, so where would a minority go if not with the Democratic party?

Certainly there is no future for minorities with Republicans or the Tea Baggers, hell, those folks have a single purpose and that's to make President Obama fail and that's only because he's black. I'm so sure none of THOSE folks are planning the boost any minority's future at the same time they're trying to take down the President of the United States for no other reason than because he's a half-rican American.

The way this is presented tends to say that whites have all the 'advantages'. It is time to start including Asians in the studies. I have nothing against any group, but Asians have come from much poverty over the last 40 years and are as upscale as the whites today. They learned proper English and educated themselves, and, worked very very hard to get where they are. That is what America is about.

As a white male I fully support President Obama, unlike the loud mouths that seem to forget the last 10 years and only mouth off because they don't like who he is. Remember, this is the man that finally found and had Osama Bin Laden killed. The Republicans are simply incapable of governing it's that simply. Every time they are in charge of anything the country is worst off. The only time the country shows any kind of improvement is under Democrats, it's a historical fact. This man inherited some mess and only because the majority of Americans sat out the mid term elections do we have these loons in the house that are causing this insanity, I'm sure this will be corrected in next year's election. The republicans took over the house in 2010 and what have they done since? Anyone? Please list any achievements they might have accomplished? As it stands right now one fact remains clear, this is the LEAST productive congress in memory. No jobs bills, nothing they have done nothing to stem the loss of jobs overseas. Isn't that what they campaigned on creating jobs? Then you have these morons signing pledges? The only pledge that matters is the oath of office you take. There is no way to end the deficit with only cuts some revenues need to be coming in anyone who doesn't believe that are simply ignorant of facts. The only way we Americans can pay our bills is to have money coming in we cannot cut our electric bills we cannot cut our car payments we cannot cut our food bills but most of us have to take on some other kind of jobs to have more money coming in. The debt now around $14 trillion, $10 trillion of it thanks to the republicans cannot be paid off simply by cutting if you believe that your delusional.

Im glad for places like this where we can all speak freely and voice our opinions. Let me introduce myself, I' am a female, Puerto Rican born and raised in New York. I have seen my kind grow in America and i knew this was coming. In the next possibly 5-10 years we hispanics whom hold second place in the population will be in first place. We vote for Obama not because we are so rewarded for our vote in 2008 but because we can clearly see who is talking for us and it's Obama not the republican base. Everyone has to pay taxes or go to jail so you can't say no to taxes. White or republicans ppl, not all don't seem to know too much or enough about the welfare system or medicare. To say being on welfare means being lazy is so ignorant. You have to go through so much humiliation and be demeaned for just maybe 500 a month and thats towards a family of 5 not including any other members of your family being there is a cap on how much they give you. So single young moms as they call them can't just keep having babies and expect more from welfare they wont provide for beyond 5.

The presidents color does not mean anything to us, we just know the democrat party can help us more than the republican party. I say to all republicans that are commenting on here and all blogs in america that Obama will serve another 4 years like it or not. Ive kept myself upto date and have read and listened to both parties and their views and its disgusting what comes out of the republican side. i understand both parties are not perfect but no one is and as for all the independents out there that just bash both parties why have you not presented a candidate for president? Do you really want a Christian Ideacracy running this country and your life? I for one don't and id rather deal with spending problems than have someone else controlling my morals and views.

The present economy is the product of George W. Bush's administration, and the trillions of dollars of deficit spending that occurred during the Bush Administration. Also, the transfer of wealth is due to Republican policies, including their present intransigence on ending tax breaks for high income people.

The author of this article is truly biased, as evidenced by their choice of "but minorities . . .." That language attempts to create a link between Pres. Obama and the transfer of wealth to whites, when in fact there is no such link. Must work for Faux News.

We entered Obama's tenure with a 1,000,000,000,000 dollar debt. It's now 14 times that, on Obama's watch, and the dems want to grow it far beyond 14,000,000,000,000. That's got nothing to do with George W. You'll be blaming him for Armageddon when that happens too, won't you?

This current statistic has its basis in Clinton's pressuring banks to lend to those who couldn't afford the loans in the first place. So shut up about Bush already.

"But?" minorities continue to support Obama? BUT? Really? Obama is all about welfare states. He wants a nanny government that'll change your diapers and feed you your gomint cheese. He wants everyone sucking the tit of the national cash cow.

Never mind that the root of this problem is the demcraps under Clinton *requiring* banks to lend to people who couldn't afford it. Never mind that the cash cow will up and move out of this country if the government continues to bleed it. Obama's claim last night that "the millionaires and billionaires" need to "pay their fair share" makes the point perfectly. He doesn't mean millionaires and billionaires; they don't pay *income* taxes anyway. He means the upper middle class who got here by sweat and tears and hard work. And as for "fair share," we're already paying 75% of ALL the taxes.

I think it is an insult to the intelligence of minorities to suggest that the President has had anything to do with the wealth gap in Amerikkka. What you are seeing is the results of generations of policies from the right aimed at keeping minorities in their place. There has been a deliberate effort from the right since slavery to disenfranchise and literally cut minorities out of the American dream. Separate but unequal has applied to every socioeconomic, political, judicial and educational opportunity that is supposed to be afforded to every American. No matter how individuals try and make race a non-factor in the discussion, the data is more than conclusive across various (redistricting) lines and shows just who we are as a nation. For every political agenda from the left that seeks to create a level playing field in America, the are 3 counter measure put in place to maintain the status quo. In the meantime, the rich get richer, the poor get poorer and the white American gets to enjoy the privilege of being white in America at the expense of minorities. The average white American is not actively calling for inequality in America; however, the silence in the face of obvious injustice from many who claim "I'm not racist, I have 2 black friends" is deafening. Until white Americans realize that injustice and inequality for anyone, is a threat to Democracy for everyone, we will be continue to have these gaps that span generations and fuel our differences. Am I my brothers keeper... obviously not!

Damon STFU. It is so tiring having people scream "racist" any time they want to try to discredit someone. It's just old. yak, yak, yak...

Do you recall who fought the civil war that ended slavery? By far, the largest number of people on BOTH sides were white. If America (KKK how clever...) were as racist as you want to make it out to be, there would still be slavery in this country.

Oh and it was Obama's party, the DEMOCRATS, who wanted to keep slavery going. It was the republicans (and whiggs) who pushed to end it. Try reading some history before you start blathering.

The Republicans then would be Dems now, dumb ass! And if you read the article, you would see there isnt a great deal that has been achieved with minorities wealth building since slavery thanks to you and your Rethuglican leaders. We call a spade a spade (no pun intended) and a Republican a pig! A$$hole...

Top 12 Reasons Why Your Friends Vote for Democrats:

When your friends cannot explain why they voted for Democrats, give them this list. They can then pick their reasons from this "TOP 12" Lists:

                                        1. I voted Democrat because I believe oil companies' profits of 4% on a gallon of gas are obscene, but the government taxing the same gallon of gas at 15% isn't.

                                        2. I voted Democrat because I believe the government will do a better job of spending the money I earn than I would.

                                        3. I voted Democrat because Freedom of Speech is fine as long as nobody is offended by it.

                                        4. I voted Democrat because I'm way too irresponsible to own a gun, and I know that my local police are all I need to protect me from murderers and thieves.

                                        5. I voted Democrat because I believe that people who can't tell us if it will rain on Friday can tell us that the polar ice caps will melt away in ten years if I don't start driving a Prius.

                                        6. I voted Democrat because I'm not concerned about millions of babies being aborted so long as we keep all death row inmates alive.

                                        7. I voted Democrat because I think illegal aliens have a right to free health care, education, and Social Security benefits.

                                        8. I voted Democrat because I believe that business should not be allowed to make profits for themselves. They need to break even and give the rest away to the government for redistribution as the Democrats
                                        see fit.

                                        9. I voted Democrat because I believe liberal judges need to rewrite the Constitution every few days to suit some fringe kooks who would never get their agendas past the voters.

                                        10. I voted Democrat because I think that it's better to pay billions to people who hate us for their oil, but not drill our own because it might upset some endangered beetle or gopher.

                                        11. I voted Democrat because while we live in the greatest, most wonderful country in the world, I was promised "HOPE AND CHANGE".

                                        12. I voted Democrat because my head is so firmly planted up my ass, it's unlikely that I'll ever have another point of view.

Im so sure you follow and agree with every little thing your party represents and does. Me for one im a democrat because theyre values and focus is mostly on what I care about. Why would I want to be a stuck up, greedy, money hungry, jealous, inscruppolous, shameful republican. Gun laws are meant for us to carry guns in our home to protect ourselves and i am completely behind that but the thought that anyone can walk around carrying a concealed weapon is scary. Just cause someone doesnt have a criminal record does not put them above using their gun in a negative way.

And by the way the constitution and even the government should be revised and updated. Things have changed and I dont understand why we still bring up the past government. Voting should only count in the popular vote not electoral, men should carry the same responsibility as a woman towards their child not just financial, weed should be legal by now, corporations should not have a right to treat their employees like trash and should have to go through the same justice a sexual harrasser does in the work place.

And they expect us to believe they care about spending and fiscal responsibility. Notice it was 7-1 in 1995 and that's after all the advances of the civil rights movement. Even that was ridiculous at the time. This is proof positive that the right wants to undue every gain that came from that movement in an effort to "take their country back". This is no coincidence... these are the sons of slave owners making calculated decisions to bring back the days of indentured servitude.

If the passion of the minorities is to envy the successful and steal their wealth, then believing a minority POTUS can help them steal success and wealth, instead of working toward it might seem viable.....being in bed with a socialist might seem like a great idea.

However, wealth and success is a revolving door and it appears that w h i t e s understand this and minorities only understand that they are somehow entitled to success and wealth simply by wishing for it............

In spite of a host of government programs to regulate, control and outlaw "unfair" conditions, for the most part, the opportunities in America are fantastically great,....even for minorities to succeed based on HARD WORK, education, skill maintenance and sheer determination..........

The recent redistribution mentalities leave one thing very clear....they believe the successful and wealthy are too ignorant to see what is happening to them; and cannot fathom that the wealthy may abandon a country which holds them hostage to envy and thievery of their wealth.........

Theres nowhere for the rich to go and if they do all leave which I clearly doubt they would lose their riches. The ones we've accumulated for them for were the consumers and the consumer is always right. Taxes are going up in all countries and they are seeing the abuseses of the rich on their ppl. I heard china is raising theyre labor wages and so is india and so on, bringing back the the US with their tails between their legs. So dont give me that BS and so what if they leave, others will replace them and we can boycott their products and buy only American made if they want to see who their real boss is we should all look in the mirror. We have enabled most of the top 2% of this nation to have the wealth they have and you have the nerve to demean us because alot of us need help to purchase these same products and services? Ohh well in the end there is no use debating being there are obviously more minorities and poor white folk than well off ppl in the US and we are not voting for anyone in the republican party and no amount of numbers and comments are gonna change that. I am speaking for minorities and the poor for I myself am one. If anyone is creating a gap its whites and all that represent them. Were not blind and see how you look out for your kind on a daily basis while leaving most minorities trying to pick at whats left. I say to all minorities here get out of the city and move all across america, its cheaper and more beautiful and will create the rainbow this country should be. Dont be scared of the white man and what he would try to do. If they truelly are not racist we should be able to live anywhere we want in this great nation.

Naturally the limited education of minorities assures that they are first to be laid off, and the last to be hired.

This all but guarantees that they will stay at the bottom of the economic ladder. Just being a good worker isn't enough. You have to have knowledge and skills to be hireable, and to be considered trainable. There is enourmous competition for all but the lowest paying menial jobs.

As for still supporting Obama. Same reasons equals the same results. Obama looks like a minority, so, with the minorities limited education, and reasoning ability, he looks like the best choice to them.

Nice try Janet,..........but your race-based diatribe above is proof of your foolish ideology over reasonable thinking.....if, you are capable,............

Janet thinks the consumers have "enabled" the wealthy, or somehow "enabled" inventors........can Janet explain how the minorities and poor "enabled" Thomas Edison, John Crapper, Eli Whitney, Alexander Graham Bell, William Halsted, Andrew Carnegie, John Rockerfeller, Bill Gates,........or anyone else, to invent and create modern inventions of genius..........that their creative genius was driven by the "enabling" of the consumer...........?????????????

Such a ridiculous philosophy must originate only from an education that teaches that any one man's creation belongs to all,.....aka Karl Marx and Engels..............

The BS, Janet, is believing that the inventions of a few, which brings wealth to all, is driven by the masses of consumers which you might believe have already decided what is good for them..........

Guess it's too bad all the minority inventors had their ideas stolen by... guess who? It's Elitist like you who spew Hitler-like rhetoric to justify the slaughter of those he deemed less worthy of life. Pathetic...

And just why wouldn't the blacks and hispanics keep supporting Obama? They keep shoving kids out that they can't afford and Obama is more than happy to buy their votes with more money that working Americans pay for. It is called exploiting the poor and calling it welfare. You that feed off the government are being played for fools. Government would rather through you a crumb or maybe a fish rather than have you think for yourself and get a fishing pool.

Wow, stunning news. Fortunately there are minorities who want more out of life than their parasite brethren. So much for the "great society," right?
