Obama cancels fundraisers to deal with debt negotiations

An Obama campaign official confirms reports that the president has been forced to cancel several upcoming fundraisers, so that he can continue to focus on raising the debt ceiling.

Obama had been scheduled to attend two DNC events tonight in Washington, DC. Instead, Vice President Biden will attend tonight's fundraiser at the St. Regis Hotel.

On Wednesday Aug. 3, the president had been schedule to travel to Chicago for fundraisers as part of his 50th birthday celebration.

The Obama campaign official says that if debt negotiations are still ongoing, the president will not travel to Chicago for those events.

In addition, an upcoming presidential West Coast swing for campaign events in California and Washington State has been put on hold, the official confirms.

ChristiMtl...The Obama Diary:

I love what she wrote:

_____________________________________________________________

I really like historian Doris Kearns Goodwin who was on MTP Sunday.

GREGORY: Doris, sometimes satire can be the most damning in terms of summing up where we are. And The Onion newspaper, the satirical newspaper, has this headline this week. Headline: “Congress Continues Debate Over Whether Or Not Nation Should Be Economically Ruined.” If the question is whether Washington is broken, make the case that the answer is yes.

MS. DORIS KEARNS GOODWIN: I think there’s no question it’s broken. You know, our country was created on the principle of compromise. Think about it, the states vs. the federal government; Senate vs. House; North vs. South. And some–I remember once one of the old framers was asked, “What are the three principles of this new government you’ve created?” “Well, the first is compromise, the second is compromise, the third is compromise.”

David McCullough, the Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer of Harry Truman and John Adams, had good things to say about President Barack Obama in an interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria this morning.

“I admire him very much,” McCullough said of Obama. “His time in office presented him with problems such as very few presidents have ever had to address. And given the complexity and the gravity of those problems, I think he’s handled himself very well. My hat goes off to him, my heart goes out to him.”

McCullough singled out an attribute in great presidents: “the capacity to move the country to do better than it thinks it can” and to do that through language.

McCullough praised Truman as one of the greatest presidents. “He said, ‘I never forget where I came [from] — who I was, where I came from and where I would go back to,’ ” McCullough said. “Now that’s a man who knows exactly who he is. He’s not craving this adoration and limelight in order to feel good about himself. He didn’t want the job. It was thrust upon him.”

The historian called George Washington the greatest president because “he set the standards for behavior, integrity and patriotism of the best kind, not the flag-waving kind, but true love of county.”

Glad you liked the DKG quote. It was lovely I agree. David McCullough is another historian with a wonderful perspective. I met him downstairs in the lobby of my bldg many years ago. Just a classy classy man. He was so friendly and we just stood there talking for a few minutes. I remember wishing him luck with the Pulitzer for his John Adams book.

He won it a few weeks later. I was thrilled for him. He got me re-interested in John Adams, whose house is down the street from mine. I have taken quite a few people to Adams'house, mainly on the 4th of July.

It has been said that every 4th of July the people of Quincy used to go to John Adams' house, who was by then really getting up there in years - they would just stand outside his house on the 4th, hoping to catch a glimpse of "the old man". They loved him for all he did for America.

Pat, David McCollough is a big favorite of mine, have read all his books and right now am reading his latest "The Greater Journey" Americans in Paris in the 18th and 19th centuries. The stories of their hazardous journies to get there and their experiences in living and learning in different culture make for very interesting reading. It covers the adventures and experiences of the likes of James Fenimore Cooper, Samuel F.B. Morse, Ralph Waldo Emerson, medical student then, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and how those experiences made a difference in their lives that followed.

His writings are so well researched, so descriptive, they take you to that moment he is writing about.

Hey Pat----why don't you turn your baseball attention to the Pittsburgh Pirates----tied for the lead in their division today. They are the talk of the town---selling out PNC Park, playing some exciting ball. Of course they make the mistakes a young club will make, but it is fun to have a team to root for again!

Looks like all the Dems scare-mongering about a massive Defaultageddon in the markets today was just crying “wolf”. Asian and European markets are closed and US markets are half way through the day, and all is well. Most markets were down less than one percent, which is just another day where there were a few more sellers than buyers. The German Dax index was actually up 0.25%. OK, Barry has tried putting a gun to granny’s head with the threat of no SS checks on August 3, 2011. Then, he threatened everyone with having to eat peas. Then, his weekend he had all the Obamabots out on the talk shows trying to scare people with threats of collapse in the markets if there wasn’t a deal by Sunday afternoon.

What’s next?? Maybe something really scary like every Republican in the House and Senate getting a personal visit from Feisty where she will have Presidential authorization to do whatever it takes to make them jump on the Obamabot bandwagon??

Yikes!!!!

      Spanky,

If you took loans out and decided not to pay them back, like you suggest congress do by not raising the debt ceiling, what would happen to your ability to practice law? Could you even hold on to your license to practice? Just asking since both Republicans and Democrats have already charged up the credit card.

Really, so you actually think the US cannot pay its existing debt?

Or is that just what Think Progress says?

Cause see it's flat wrong. Debt service on a per monthly basis is about $20 Billion. They receive about $200 billion in revenue each month.

      So what else you got?

Oh and what does the practice of law have to paying loans back? So if the dog catcher stops paying his mortgage or credit cards do you think they stop him from working?

AnaB - what the heck are you talking about - just makes no sense, which is probably why you are so misguided on the issues.

      Convoluted point Spanky -

it's about stopping the ridiculous spending.

But you didn't point out for the world to see that what you mean is : spending that YOU feel is ridiculous only.

Would you support reducing expenditures by abolishing: Securities & Exchange Commission, Commodity Futures Trade Commission, Export-Import Bank, Overseas Private Investment Corporation, and the Commerce Department? We could save A LOT of money if we didn't pay for these things; of course, there wouldn't be much business going on and Wall Street would pretty much shut down - but maybe that isn't so bad. What do YOU think about it?

ARE YOU WILLING TO DO AWAY WITH FEDERAL COMMERCIAL AND BUSINESS PROGRAMS IN ORDER TO REDUCE SPENDING or are you just stuck on stuff that benefits the lower income portion of our population such as Medicare/Medicaid, etc.?

Please tell us where YOU stand.

Too easy Not Stupid. If it were me I'd cut everything back to Clinton's budget effective immediately. That's about a 25% reduction across the board.

Then the congress would actually come up with a budget - whatever it could pass would be fine, but capped at $2.3 T, the remainder pay down the debt.

Simple outlook - spend a little less than you have, use the rest to save or pay off existing debt.

I know - wat too complicated for the big brains in Washington.

Oh and I'd also go back to the gold standard. THe Fed is totally f'ed up.

Personally, I would cut spending on ALL federal bureaucracy and tell them to each make the hard decisions on what specifically got cut. I would hope that they could identify any dead wood or ineffective programs.

BTW - as a strawman argument back to you would you support doing away with all federal pensions and health plans and replacing them with SS and medicare. Perhaps even converting the existing pension balances to 401k's, IRA's or 501k's based on maximun contributions currently allowed with the surplus going into SS.

If spending is spending how can we continue to spend money we don't have on tax cuts and loopholes?

Why is it that the republicans think the money spent on the rich is fine?

Don't even get me started on the war of choice pushed on us by an emotional frenzy concocted by bush, cheney and faux. War spending, why do republicans seem to love war spending? They raised the debt ceiling 7 times for bush.

Are you referring to per capita or hard numbers, Spanky? Either way creates problems you've not addressed.

      @American numbers --

Sorry; does that "big strawman build up" force you out of the comfort zone? Just facts. In answer to your question:

would you support doing away with all federal pensions and health plans and replacing them with SS and medicare.

Because this nation is founded upon the self-evident truth that all men are created equal, the answer is ABSOLUTELY. In compliance with our system, NO ex post facto nor selective legislation should be enforceable; legislators should NOT enjoy a pension for life after 1 term; NO public servant should have any health plan different than any citizen, and government employees - including specifically congresspersons and federal justices/judges - should be mandated to abide by and partake of the laws they enact just like everyone else.

Surprise you? Shouldn't - the idea, just like the deficit debate, should ultimately oppose and/or abolish the "class warfare", caste system, and elitist society. That is the principle upon which this nation is based.

        Sith Rule of Two.

"Two (Sith) there should be; no more, no less.
One master to embody the power, the other apprentice to crave it."

Absolute power and total control just doesn't fit with the liberal theme.

Trump doesn't want to commit and as for the rest, there is plenty of time before the 2012 nominating conventions to shake out any other wannabes.\

Yet now those talking points - debt, deficit and taxes are the dems new goals. They just can't seem to get enough of them.

            My how times have changed.

Now job1 your turn - you tell me which dem talking point from a year or so ago the republicans have adopted.

Sucks don't it? Cause Obama totally ran on cutting entitlements and the deficit, right? Of course he did. :)

Actually, the cuts you are referring to are the Bush Tax cuts. They expire in December 2012.

Seems that those in the lower 98% range just don't want to spend their money on the items that would generate manufacturing and service demand so more folks could be hired to meet that demand.

Folks like me can afford to pay more in taxes without it really hurting that much. you tell my daughters that they will have to pay more, they begin to reevaluate which bills get paid this month.

Then you (figurative you, not necessarily you personally) talk about combining that with cuts to Medicaid and Medicare. Now you are talking about taking something from my granddaughter on top of the extra in taxes you want my youngest daughter to pay.

OK, let's go that route instead of having those of us with the means to pay a bit more.

That's my reasoning for not agreeing with 'broadening the tax base'.

same goes for how we have to shrink the government ...I've heard it before, it's growing stale.

Only growing stale because the politcos choose not to want to talk about it. Big gov is good to them. After all, it builds committee power, and power is everythink in Washington. What the heck, they are not spending their money!

Boring me too. I have enough taxes and fees between CA state gov, and the Feds.

But what really irks me is the inability of the leadership of this country. Time to remove the professionals from government and replace them with people who can do the job without being corrupted by party and leadership.

                    This may be their opportunity.

Will the President veto a debt ceiling bill which passes the Senate?

I'll bet the people in Wisconsin and Ohio are distancing themselves from republicans. The just recalled 6 newly elected republicans with almost a million more signatures than they needed. Ohio had just over 600,000 more signatures than they needed to put the union busting bill on the ballot brought to you by the republicans in Ohio. If republicans are so wonderful and for the people, I wonder why these ungrateful voters did this?

I know you can do it, twist this around and make it President Obama's fault.

So much argument about how much there should be in spending cuts, so little about how much federal revenue should be raised.

Not only are any increases in tax rates off the table, we can't even allow the temporary tax cuts of ten years ago to expire as they're supposed to -- not even for the wealthiest among us.

In the 1950s the highest rate was more than 90% and somehow the rich managed to stay rich. Now it's at 34% and some propose to cut it farther, to 25%.

This is known as "starving the beast" and was begun seriously in the 1980s with the objective -- I guess -- of rendering the federal government impotent. Get rid of noisome interference with the free market by eliminating EPA and FDA -- and especially NPR, that money pit of Bolsheviks. Not that I object. I like higher arsenic in my drinking water and uninspected meat at the supermarket. And only elitist inverts listen to Beethoven on NPR.

Taxes haven't been this low since 1931. And the richest among us, according to a recently released IRS report, pay a bit more than 18% of their income in federal income tax. That's horrible. In 2007 the richest 400 Americans paid only 16.6%. Now look at the sacrifices they're making. How can they possibly create jobs when they have to fork over all their money to the National Endowment for the Arts? A bunch of guys in BALLET costumes! Probably speak French.

No, sir. It's worth ruining the nation's economy just to teach these Big Spenders in Washington a lesson. Everybody will have to pay higher interest rates on everything from mortgages to cars, but it's a worthy sacrifice. Didn't Samson have to bring down the temple? Sure, he killed himself and his friends, but he got even with his enemies and sure taught them a lesson.

Robert, I am sure it was a typo on your part, but the top rate is 35% and not 34%. What this means is that for every dollar over $379,150, the federal government takes $0.35 (this is in addition to state and local taxes). For every dollar made between $174,000 & $379,149, the federal government takes $0.33.

Your argument about that rate is also specious because $200,000 (where the top rate was 91%) is about $1.6 million today. The top rate today was approximately $45,000 in 1951.

Furthermore, the world was recovering from WWII and the US had the about only in-tact manufacturing base; abundant, inexpensive energy and a large, inexpensive workforce. We were going to prosper as a nation regardless of the tax rate at the top.

After all, everybody is allowed to build up a massive debt and pay it off by borrowing more.

That's what caused this recession we're in, the Democrats protecting Fannie and Freddie as they cooked the books, bought up hundreds of billions of dollars in BAD mortgages and sold them as "securities". And the people "buying" those homes NEVER being able to afford them in the first place. Of course people like Tommy go along with the stupidity of Barney Frank that "every American has a right to own a home", even if they can't afford it, because after all, we can just either bail them out or print more worthless money, right Tommy?

And of course it's the banks that need to be regulated for actually buying something that they were told were "securities" and it turning out to be a bunch of bums buying homes they couldn't afford.

And it's the rest of the nation's responsibility to actually have to pay for the massive idiocy of Democrats.

                              OBAMA'S COLLEGE CLASSMATE SPEAKS OUT

By Wayne Allyn Root , June 6th, 2010
Barack Hussien Obama is no fool. He is not incompetent.
To the contrary, he is brilliant. He knows exactly what he's doing.
He is purposely overwhelming the U.S. economy to create systemic failure,
economic crisis and social chaos -- thereby destroying capitalism and
                              our country from within.

Barack Hussien Obama was my college classmate

                              ( Columbia University , class of '83).
He is a devout Muslim do not be fooled.
                              Look at his Czars...anti-business..anti- american.
As Glenn Beck correctly predicted from day one, Barack Hussien Obama is
following the plan of Cloward & Piven, two professors at Columbia University .
They outlined a plan to socialize America by overwhelming the system
with government spending and entitlement demands.

Add up the clues below. Taken individually they're alarming.
Taken as a whole, it is a brilliant, Machiavellian game plan to turn
the United States into a socialist/Marxist state with a permanent majority
that desperately needs government for survival ... and can be counted
on to always vote for bigger government.

Why not? They have no responsibility to pay for it.

Universal health care . The health care bill had very little to do with health
care. It had everything to do with unionizing millions of hospital and
health care workers, as well as adding 15,000 to 20,000 new IRS agents (who will join government employee unions).
Obama doesn't care that giving free health care to 30 million Americans
will add trillions to the national debt.
What he does care about is that it cements the dependence of those 30 million voters to Democrats and big government ..
Who but a socialist revolutionary would pass this reckless spending bill
in the middle of a depression?

Cap and trade. Like health care legislation having nothing to do with
health care, cap and trade has nothing to do with global warming.
It has everything to do with redistribution of income, government control
of the economy and a criminal payoff to Obama's biggest contributors.
Those powerful and wealthy unions and contributors (like GE, which owns
NBC, MSNBC and CNBC) can then be counted on to support everything Obama wants.
They will kick-back hundreds of millions of dollars in contributions to
Obama and the Democratic Party to keep them in power.
The bonus is that all the new taxes on Americans with bigger cars,
bigger homes and businesses helps Obama "spread the wealth around."

Make Puerto Rico a state. Why? Who's asking for a 51st state?
Who's asking for millions of new welfare recipients and government
entitlement addicts in the middle of a depression?
                              Certainly not American taxpayers.
But this has been Barack Hussien Obama's plan all along.
His goal is to add two new Democrat senators, five Democrat congressman and a million loyal Democratic voters who are dependent on big government.

Legalize 12 million illegal Mexican immigrants.
Just giving these 12 million potential new citizens free health care alone could overwhelm the system and bankrupt America .
But it adds 12 million reliable new Democrat voters who can be counted
                              on to support big government.
Add another few trillion dollars in welfare, aid to dependent children,
food stamps, free medical, education, tax credits for the poor, and
                              eventually Social Security ..

Stimulus and bailouts. Where did all that money go?
It went to Democrat contributors, organizations (ACORN), and unions -- including billions of dollars to save or create jobs of government employees across the country.
It went to save GM and Chrysler so that their employees could
                              keep paying union dues.
It went to AIG so that Goldman Sachs could be bailed out
(after giving Obama almost $1 million in contributions).
A staggering $125 billion went to teachers (thereby protecting their union dues).

All those public employees will vote loyally Democrat to protect their
bloated salaries and pensions that are bankrupting America .
The country goes broke, future generations face a bleak future, but Obama, the Democrat Party, government, and the unions grow more powerful.
                              The ends justify the means.

Raise taxes on small business owners, high-income earners, and job
creators. Put the entire burden on only the top 20 percent of taxpayers,
redistribute the income, punish success, and reward those who did
nothing to deserve it (except vote for Obama).
Reagan wanted to dramatically cut taxes in order to starve the government. Barack Obama wants to dramatically raise taxes to starve his political opposition. With the acts outlined above, Barack Hussien Obama and his regime have created a vast and rapidly expanding constituency of voters dependent on big government; a vast privileged class of public employees who work for big government; and a government dedicated to destroying capitalism and installing themselves as socialist rulers by overwhelming the
                              system.

Add it up and you've got the perfect Marxist scheme -- all devised by
my Columbia University college classmate Barack Hussien Obama
using the Cloward and Piven Plan .

Let me point you in the right direction...it DOESN'T mean it's true...it just means that "Wayne Allyn Root wrote in an OPINION piece that President Obama is purposefully overwhelming the U.S. economy"...

                              THE CARE BILL HB 3200

JUDGE KITHIL IS THE 2ND OFFICIAL WHO HAS OUTLINED THESE PARTS OF THE CARE BILL.

Judge Kithil of Marble Falls, TX - highlighted the most egregious pages of HB3200

Please read this........ especially the reference to pages 58 & 59

                              JUDGE KITHIL wrote:

** Page 50/section 152: The bill will provide insurance to all non-U.S. residents, even if they are here illegally.

** Page 58 and 59: The government will have real-time access to an individual's bank account and will have the
authority to make electronic fund transfers from those accounts.

** Page 65/section 164: The plan will be subsidized (by the government) for all union members, union retirees
and for community organizations (such as the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now - ACORN).

** Page 203/line 14-15: The tax imposed under this section will not be treated as a tax.
(How could anybody in their right mind come up with that?)

** Page 241 and 253: Doctors will all be paid the same regardless of specialty, and the government will set all doctors' fees.

** Page 272. section 1145: Cancer hospital will ration care according to the patient's age.

** Page 317 and 321: The government will impose a prohibition on hospital expansion; however, communities may petition for an exception.

** Page 425, line 4-12: The government mandates advance-care planning consultations.
Those on Social Security will be required to attend an end-of-life planning" seminar every five years. (Death counseling..)

** Page 429, line 13-25: The government will specify which doctors can write an end-of-life order. HAD ENOUGH????
Judge Kithil then goes on to identify:

"Finally, it is specifically stated that this bill will not apply to members of Congress. Members of Congress are already exempt from the
Social Security system, and have a well-funded private plan that covers their retirement needs. If they were on our Social Security plan, I
believe they would find a very quick 'fix' to make the plan financially sound for their future."
Honorable David Kithil of Marble Falls, Texas
All of the above should give you the ammo you need to support your opposition to Obamacare.

An Obama campaign official confirms reports that the president has been forced to cancel several upcoming fundraisers, so that he can continue to focus on raising the debt ceiling.

I thought we were worried about the budget. Is obama only interested n raising the debt ceiling so he will have more money to give away? Just wondering.

George, to that point - why do we never hear about the Democrats not passing a budget at all in the media at large? Its really sad. I'd truly prefer a media that is looking to mercilessly seek truth (but respectfully) and dig into everyone equally then have the failing, cheerleading disgrace we have now...
