Congress has left for the week without reauthorizing the Federal Aviation Administration's budget.
That means furloughs and on-going airport projects will be halted.
Specifically, the FAA says:
-- 4,000 FAA employees in 35 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico will be furloughed
-- air-traffic-control operations will NOT be affected, but engineers, scientists, analysts, office staff, etc. will be affected
-- it will not be able to collect taxes, according to the airlines.
"I'm very disappointed that Congress adjourned today without passing a clean extension of the FAA bill," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said in a statement. "Because of their inaction, states and airports won't be able to work on their construction projects, and too many people will have to go without a paycheck. This is no way to run the best aviation system in the world."
Earlier this week, NBC's Luke Russert explained why Congress was unable to pass an extension to keep the entire FAA open.

Congress could cut 75% or more of NOAA's budget and who would know the difference?
These are the people you voted-in in the Mid-Term elections... nice. I hope you loose your jobs, savings, retirement, healthcare and child's education to see what your stupid choices have brought you.
That's not nice. You might lose your handouts as well. I'm betting that productive people will adapt, survive and rebuild their personal wealth. Parasites, not so much.
Just Me.......you got it right........hard to believe either the tea baggers or the people who put them there have any idea of what being a real American is about. This fixation with "getting" President Obama is going to take us all over the cliff. It appears to be very easy to take these morons from hating Obama to hating the whole government.........me? I love my country and I kinda like having a government since I am a woman and as such had to turn to the government to enforce my right to be an autonomous person.....
since I am a woman and as such had to turn to the government to enforce my right to be an autonomous person...
Kathryn, you must be proud to have voted in 1920! The attempt to deflect ( Racists, hating Obama, etc.) doesn't stop the fact that many REAL Americans are not going to allow the clowns to spend more than they get. Sorry if that cuts into your entitlement, or union kickback. I think those who think we can forever spend more than we have and vote in the pandering clowns to support that are doing grave harm to the future of this nation.
Ever since Reagan busted the Air Traffic Controller union our airline industry has gone downhill.....we USED to have the best system in the world but we do not now......this family does not fly anymore.
I think we should hold another Boston Tea Party--only this time throw the Teahadists into Boston harbor!
PS....... What we are witnessing is the self destruction of the Republican Party.
Tom in NH......if the best they can do is make the destruction of the President their #1 priority.....they deserve to be turned out and never allowed back in the halls of government.
I wish there was an applause emoticon on here! :) Pesonally, I think that's going to happen , especially if we suffer any economic harm from their actions!
Our national Congress needs a law like California has put in. That one states that if there is NO balanced budget by the time the congressional session ends, the state senators and representatives will stay, in session, and NOT RECEIVE A PAYCHECK until they produce a balanced budget. I believe, it took the California group 5 days to come to a decision on a balanced budget. Every one of the people in Congress in Washington should be voted out in November of whatever year for failing the American people in this.
Once again, the GOP is demonstrating the wonderful traits of responsibility it has shown us during the discussions about the debt ceiling. Just think of all the money they will save this nation by delaying action on this specific item. It seems like the GOP has elected a group of freshmen elementrey students into office.
LEARN. Learn how to plant something, slop a hog, run a few cows, fish, and barter. That is what is coming to the United States of America. Want to blame somebody. LOOK IN THE DANG MIRROR. Our inherent greed and I, me, me, I attitude plus our totally lackadasical attitude of the government will fix it, are what have brought this country down. All of a sudden the people are finally taking a lil notice of government, when they see the selves as threatened. Well, guess what, we sat on our collective asses a lil bit too long. About 50 years too long. Want to blame: THEN LOOK IN THE MIRROR. You will not like what you see.
So Bush spends $4-$5 trillion, gives tax breaks during wartime, gives medicare drug benefit but guarantees big Pharma no negotiating drug prices and relaxes regulation on everything and the economy goes bust. Then it's all dropped in Obama's lap on Jan 20, 2009, who then has to borrow trillions to keep the country from a Depression.
This is reality, who wasn't here please raise your hands and we'll rewind the tape so you can watch it again.
Wars run OFF Budget, Billions in cash just disappears at Baghdad airport , 100,000 firearms disappear in shipping, clueless Republican interns sent to run the occupation of Iraq.....
Now this is real history, not a story, not spin, this actually happened. Who wasn't here? How can there be millions of Americans who believe all this didn't happen?
There is no denying Bush acted like a liberal with his spending. That doesn't give the current Liar in Chief a free pass for breaking records spending the last 2.5 years.
Why is it so hard for the party of parasites to understand that if Bush spent (Bad), Obama spent more even faster(free pass) doesn't have any logical reasoning?
To tell you how treasonous these Teahadist Gutless Obstructionist Perverts (GOP) are, the chairman of the House Aviation sub-committee, John Mica, who allowed this FAA shutdown to occur, is a Florida Republican Congressman whose failure to renew the FAA will cost the state an estimated $88 billion in revenue from airline ticket tax revenue. He ranks right up there with Florida's skinhead Bagger-Nutzie Governor, Rick Scott, who turned down the billions in high speed rail money because he "don't like" Obama.
How about we END the REPUBLICAN party INSTEAD of social security and medicare. Only a FEW would miss them.
Because then there won't be enough working people left to pay for these entitlements. Is there ONE Liberal on here who understands if we continue to spend more than we have, sooner or later ALL the entitlements will go bankrupt. Then who will support all those in need? Soros isn't about to buy your lunch, pay your rent or get you food.
I'm waiting for Aug. 3rd when my parents, rabid Republicans and Obama haters, don't receive their SS checks. That's what happens when you elect "leaders" who tell you they are going to rid us of government spending and refuse to raise taxes on their fellow gang members. My parents voted for these radicals, let them suffer the consequences of their election. I can't help them out of this problem. I lost my 401k because of the actions of the money changers running our economy. I'm 54 and I don't get to retire. Like the extremists on the right are always telling us, we have to get out and earn our own income. Relying on the government to help us in our time of need is a Socialist/Marxist/Fascist/Communist/Humanist (take your pick) form of leadership. Can't have any of that government benefiting the citizens of it's country. Bad, Government, Bad!
So we don't get to retire. I'm your age. I'll do the best I can as long as I can. Maybe your parents are far brighter than you give them credit for. I doubt these Great Depression survivors are shedding any tears because you lost your 401K.
You can get up when life knocks you down and give it a full effort. Or you can whine, pout and cry over your bad breaks and wait for other people's money to bail you out.
Folks, I am just a little confused here.
I read the article and then went to the article explaining WHY, and I could not find ANYWHERES where it said the Reps wanted to do away with the Union.
"There are two particular disagreements. One is over labor rights. In February, the Senate passed an FAA extension bill that allowed for airline and railroad workers to unionize more easily. Under that legislation, a union could be set up if a simple majority of voters who were present approved of the union.
Under the old rule, employees who didn't show up to the meeting were counted as "NO" votes on unionizing. In April, the House passed a FAA extension bill that did away with this union provision. But Senate Democrats have said they won't pass a FAA extension bill that doesn't have the union provision."
The way I see it, if ya know a Union is forming and you cannot be bothered to 'Show Up' and vote (either yes or no), then why the hell should you even get a say in what happens?
I think it is important to understand the house Republicans reasons for failing to authorize a budget approval for the F.A.A. They want to close a number of small airports, wow, would anyone believe that the ones they want to close are in the districts of Democratic leadership. The other unstated reason is to make it more difficult for civil service employees to organize. Their desire is if a vote is taken for approval to organize, the number of people that don't vote should be counted as no votes. A failure to vote is in fact an I don't care either way and should simply not count at all.
My husband was an active employee, now retired, of the F.A.A. in 1995 during the government shutdown. His position was counted as critical so he had to go to work, even if we had no assurance he would get paid. The essential and non essential people will only receive their paychecks for back days if that is part of the authorization bill. Personally, I believe the house Republicans should be fined for recessing before they have completed an important deadline that is part of their job.
Well lets purposely put more people on unemployment. I see how the the government cares about the people of this country. It's more important to win the arguement than to actually accomplish something. Maybe we should have all independents running for office and not have any parties to screw us over.
Do say get rid of Medicare Plan B prescription and Medicare Advantage. Both of those are basically deficit spending plan anyway. Not part of normal Medicare.
