Senate tables GOP's 'Cut, Cap, and Balance' measure

As expected, the Senate this morning voted to table its consideration of HR 2560 -- the so-called "Cut, Cap, and Balance Act" -- by a 51-46 vote

It was a strictly party-line vote, with all "yes" coming from Democrats or Dem-leaning indies, and all "no" votes coming from Republicans.

After the vote, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced that the Senate would not work this weekend, and that he and the Republican leader would attend the "Gang of Six" meeting later in the morning.

Democrats all voted "yes" and Republicans all voted "no"???

Perhaps the other way around...

No problem - the dems don't like the bill. That's ok, so it's time to consider the dem bill.

Wait, er, what they have no bill?

Why how on earth could that be - isn't it they who say the world will end if the ceiling is not raised? Then surely they must have a plan at the ready, given that the supposed deadline is but days away, right?

Gosh, it's almost like them dems have no idea what they are doing. What could possibly go wrong?

Perhaps it's time for Republicans to quit trying to cram destruction of the social safety net and the gimmick of a balanced budget amendment into what should be (and normally is) unremarkable business for Congress.

If those things had merit they wouldn't have to put them into other bills as riders.

    Feisty:

I had to go that way. People did not like the Ryan Bill and this Duck, Dodge and Dismantle Bill was the same thing as the Ryan Bill except on Steroids. I said it from day one.

Now the GOP/TP Party is on record for voting twice now to destroy Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and virtually every middle class Social Safety Net. It also gives the richest 2% record tax cuts virtually forever.

I want to see them defend that in 2012. Not once did the vote for DRACONIAN Cuts but twice and the second vote was worse than the first.

What are they thinking, actually I guess they are not thinking. The people did not like the first Bill so why would they like one that is even worse???

They are giving us 2012 in a handbasket, for sure.

So long as the president doesn't give it right back to them.

Okay, now which way do we go?

Fiesty; forget the porta-potties, let 'em wallow in their own stink.

Anna Molly, that Yellow brick road construction, is that one of the "shovel ready projects" the last stimulous bill was supposed to be used on ?

Reality is that you know some of international banking's biggest are making some phone calls and saying "get a deal done." Chaos may present opportunity, but sometimes when you return after battle, you find you house burned down and your dog dead. Its a lot easier to make money when you know the rules. When they throw out all the rules, you never know where you'll end up.

Basic rule #1 in financial investing has always been that US Treasuries are the safest investment in the world. It has always been where everyone, from governments to junk bond fund managers have "parked" the money in times of market chaos. No other market has been stable enough or large enough to absorb everything. Remove that stability and the 2008/2009 meltdown will look like a minor correction.

The locoweed tea drinkers weren't afraid to shut down the state of Minnesota for two full weeks. My guess is they're crazy enough to to do the same to the United States of America.

Yes, but the money was diverted by Rick Perry to cover up -- temporarily it turns out -- Texas's massive deficit.

You know, the deficit run up despite the fact there are no evil public worker unions in Texas, like there are in California, as Spanky always points to as being the cause of all of California's problems.

So, how that happened is a mystery, for sure, but now there's no way to get to the Emerald City.

Sigh. Please pass the poisoned apples. If we're headed for disaster anyway, at least it will be quick.

    Anna Molly:

I'll trade you some California info since you've been giving us Wisconsin info.

The public employee unions are indeed part of the financial problem in California. You see, they walk into an empty room, write up a new contract, and voila - the citizens of California have to pay for it. The elected officials and their representatives have nothing to do with the new contract. They are blameless. The citizens are also off the hook, because the elected representatives elect themselves, you see. Yup, it's the unions, all right.

Now, others might suggest that there is a far larger issue that causes California's problems. That would be Proposition 13, which originated as the Jarvis-Gann initiative. When passed into law, it mandated a 2/3 super majority for the passage of any tax increases. (Sound familiar?) It also rolled back some property taxes and put a cap on annual tax increases, reassessed only on the sale of properties, such that identical properties are taxed at wildly differing amounts. It is the 2/3 requirement that has stopped revenue increases and given incredible power to the Republican minority. (Sound familiar?)

I have said time and again, if you want to see what awaits the federal government, look at California. The right-wing crazies there are no different from their brainless Tea Party counterparts at the federal level.

Cut = Cut Social Security Benefits

      Cap = Cap Medicare Payments

Balance = Balance the Budget off the backs of the Elderly, Poor and the Disadvantaged while maintaining massive bonus tax cuts for the wealthy and the corporations.

Nice plan Republicans. Congressman in my District ran on Jobs, Jobs and Jobs. So far all he has voted on is Abortion, Medicare Cuts and DOMA. Good luck getting re-elected Rep. Joe Heck (R) NV you are going to need it.

WTF (Win the Future) is going on with the CNN poll?

Obama on the wrong side 45/54 and 66% in favor of cut, cap balance. Did CNN poll the wrong people this time?

        No kidding!

Why wouldn't we allow 100 tea baggers in Congress and 1000 people polled DECIDE what's best for the rest of the 300 million of us...

Sounds like a hell of a plan... lol

Yet again, basic math eludes Fiesty.

        Let's extrapolate the CNN poll 66% of 300 million = 198 million.

So what's that you were saying old gal?

I know I know you no likey these 1000 people, but if you could round up 1000 that would support Obama, they'd be totally good, right? Sure they would.

Since Conservatives are all about the polls on this issue, are you willing to face the fact that only 21% of Americans approve of how Congressional Republicans have handled this issue?

So where is the Senate bill?? If fact, where is Harry's budget??

Harry criticizes the House for taking the weekend off AFTER the House crafted and passed a bill, and passed it to the Senate. The House did their job. Then, after criticizing the House, Harry has the house bill tabled, then gives the Senate the weekend off too. What a complete hypocrite. What an Idiot. He and Obama make quite a pair.
