Obama agenda: Public favors compromise

Our take on the new NBC/WSJ poll: “As Democrats and Republicans wrestle over spending and deficits in advance of an Aug. 2 deadline to raise the debt ceiling, most Americans want their political leaders to compromise rather stand their ground, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll. “Strong majorities of Democrats and independents prefer that Democratic congressional leaders make compromises in this budget debate, while almost 70 percent of independents want Republican leaders to do the same. And nearly six in 10 favor President Barack Obama’s proposal to lower the federal deficit by $4 trillion over 10 years by cutting federal spending, raising tax revenue from the wealthy and reducing some Medicare spending.

More: “But there’s one hurdle to this compromise: A majority of Republicans – and nearly two-thirds of Tea Party supporters – want GOP leaders to hold their ground.”

The Wall Street Journal’s take: “The poll … found a dramatic shift in attitudes toward the debt-ceiling debate as the public tunes in to the issue that is consuming Washington. A plurality of Americans—38%—said the debt ceiling should be raised, against 31% who said it shouldn't.”

And here’s a the new Washington Post/ABC poll: “Majorities of Americans see both President Obama and congressional Republicans as not willing enough to compromise in their budget negotiations, but the public views the GOP leaders as particularly intransigent.”

Compromise? Yes.

Appeasement? Capitulation? NO WAY.

Very interesting results from the ABC poll, particularly when you consider the President has been the one fighting against both sides pushing for a compromise.

Unfortunately, a handful of media outlets have refused to cover that news. Instead, when the President does compromise, the demands change and they say the President refuses to compromise.

That's how a deluded government is formed and end's up in isolation. Tyrant Norquist will definitely fancy this.

The New York Times had an article today, describing the the eagerness to send federal dollars to their home districts of the freshman Tea Party Representatives. Makes their rhetoric about reducing government and demanding spending cuts sound pretty hollow. An example:

Last March, while the House was drafting the military authorization bill, 22 freshman Republicans wrote a letter to the House leadership requesting more military spending than President Obama had requested.

Many of the signees included members whose districts have a large military presence or big defense contractors like Representative Steven M. Palazzo, a Mississippi freshman. During his campaign, Mr. Palazzo told voters that he favored banning earmarks, saying it would “help restore the people’s faith in their government.”

But once in office, Mr. Palazzo voted with other Republicans to slash millions of dollars from the military bill, only to add an amendment later to restore the money. Mr. Palazzo’s amendment put back about $150 million for a combat ship that would be built at Ingalls Shipbuilding in his Pascagoula district. He also secured $10 million to buy land for training facilities for the Army National Guard, and $19.9 million for the ship’s preliminary design and feasibility studies. Several of these programs were earmarks of Mr. Palazzo’s Democratic predecessor.

and then, there is the federal program to replenish sand in beaches, which costs us 95 million a year.

In his news release, Mr. Runyan, who had run a campaign on ending the “fiscal insanity” in Washington, boasted of his efforts in getting continued money for replenishing the sand on the beaches in his district.

Last year, the Democratic lawmaker whom Mr. Runyan defeated requested more than $20 million in earmarks to replace the sand on New Jersey’s beaches. On Tuesday, Mr. Runyan defended the program. “Beach replenishment projects are vital to protecting New Jersey’s 127 miles of coastline from violent storms,” he said in an e-mailed statement.

seems Tea Party Republicans are not above blackmailing the Obama administration, in order to secure earmarks fro their districts:

“This was a merit-based project that was open and transparent,” said Mr. Scott, who helped secure $150,000 for the first phase of a harbor-deepening project in Charleston, his hometown. The project is expected eventually to cost as much as $300 million. Mr. Scott, a favorite of the Tea Party movement, said he is opposed to earmarks and that dredging the port was in the national interest because it would accommodate bigger cargo ships and help create trade opportunities and jobs.

The Obama administration did not agree and did not include the project in the Army Corps of Engineers budget. As a result Mr. Scott and Senator Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican, who tried to earmark financing for the project last year, threatened in April at a news conference in Charleston to tie up the government unless the project was approved. Mr. Graham also pledged to hold up President Obama’s nominees in the Senate. After the threat by Mr. Graham and lobbying by Mr. Scott and other members of South Carolina’s Congressional delegation, the corps agreed to pay for the dredging.

Since when has any party cared what the American people think? It's our own fault - this is what happens when you don't turn out at the polls folks, you get the lowest common denominators running for office and they ride the waves of public fear and disinterest. Republicans have always wished for low voter turnout elections, because they usually win those. Why do think they want to institute new voter laws before 2012? To basically go back to a system tad amount to Jim Crow. That's why immigration reform will never happen, that would be their worst nightmare. "Those people" can do the labor we don't want to do and work for corporations or wealthy people under the table, but God forbid you actually give them rights.

Mav, in Maine, with one of the highest voter turnouts in the nation, the Republican legislature recently repealed a 38 year old policy of allowing people to register on election day. Mind you, the town clerks were against this repeal, saying it has never caused them a problem, and it supports our high turn out. The Republicans, however, repealed it in a cynical move to suppress the vote, especially that of young people who are more likely to register at the last minute. PS we are currently petitioning to put it to referendum.

Bachmann needs a teleprompter:

"I prescribe medication that I take on occasion whenever symptoms arise and they keep my migranes under control." Is she a doctor?

"I'd like to be abundantly clear- my ability to function effectively will not affect my ability to serve as commander in chief". Would her lack of ability to function effectively affect her ability to serve?

these people do not want compromise, they want your monies! they want your social security money, they want your medicare money, they want your pension money, but they don't want to pay their fair share in taxes.

history proves, when taxes are at higher rate on the wealthy, the country prospers!

it is not capitalism that is patriotic, it is not raising taxes on 2% which creates jobs, it is demand and if people don't have a job there is no demand!

so quit buying this debt ceiling crap and start demanding tax raises on the 2% and using those monies to invest in this country and rebuilding it's infastruture.

free market is bull!!! and all those including murdochs menions are telling you lie after lie! wake-up!!!

Vote Democratic get rid of the T-party and the Republicans that feel like the rich should continue to rob us blind by paying little or no taxes. Just because they own a company there is no reason for thier outlandish bonus's and salaries, put a penalty tax on their salary's and bonus's.

I know a job creator. He said so himself! And he makes $90,000.00 per year. Hardly wealthy! Wish the republicans could prove to me that the wealthy create jobs! Obviously they do not, otherwise there would be plenty of work! Where are the jobs, Boener, Mitchell and Cantor?

      START NOW!

HOUSE BILL IS COMPROMISE! Congress gets another trillion and we (the people) take their formerly unlimited credit card away.

Stop spending grandchildren's money - re-take country. Can do better than congress.

Congress fails their number 1 job - balance the budget (e.g. last 2 years)

Restore CITIZEN control - now, or it's over!
