The entire debt debate has raised this question: What do you do to reduce the nation's deficit?
Republicans want to strictly cut government spending, while preserving all tax cuts and tax breaks. President Obama, by contrast, favors a balanced approach -- some spending cuts, plus revenue increases and tax hikes.
But what about the American public? Back in February, at the very outset of this deficit/debt debate, our NBC/WSJ poll measured 26 different ways to reduce the deficit or to cut spending. The list runs from most acceptable to least acceptable.
-- Placing a surtax on federal income taxes for people earning over $1 million a year: 81% acceptable
-- Eliminating spending on so-called earmarks for special projects and specific areas of the country: 78% acceptable
-- Eliminating funding for weapons systems the Defense Department says are not necessary: 76% acceptable
-- Eliminating tax credits for the oil and gas industries: 74% acceptable
-- Phasing out the Bush tax cuts for families earning $250,000 or more per year: 68% acceptable
-- Freezing annual domestic spending at its current level for the next five years: 67% acceptable
-- Reducing Medicare and Social Security benefits for wealthier retirees: 62% acceptable
-- Gradually raising the Social Security retirement age to 69 by 2075: 56% acceptable
-- Cutting funding for the new health-care law so that parts of it will not be put into effect or enforced: 51% acceptable
-- Reducing agriculture subsidies or support to farmers and ranchers: 45% acceptable
-- Eliminating funding to Planned Parenthood for family planning and preventive health services: 45% acceptable
-- Gradually turning Medicare from a system in which the government pays for most beneficiaries' medical bills into a program in which seniors would receive government-assisted vouchers to purchase private insurance: 44% acceptable
Among the budget cuts:
Subsidies to build new nuclear power plants: 57% acceptable
Federal assistance to state governments: 52% acceptable
The Environmental Protection Agency: 51%
Transportation and infrastructure projects: 51%
Scientific and medical research: 48%
National defense: 46%
Unemployment insurance: 43%
Head Start: 41%
College student loans: 39%
Heating assistance to low-income families: 34%
Medicaid: 32%
Medicare: 23%
K-12 education: 22%
Social Security: 22%

Your forgot a few:
Forcing everyone in Congress to resign if they fail to approve a balanced budget amendment: 100%
Impeaching Obama: 100% (or Republicans)
Eliminating tax loopholes: 100%
Eliminating tax breaks for rich corporations: 100%
Spending within our means: 100%
This is not a scientific poll.
All of you people out there asking why President Obama doesn't state a specific policy, read the Constitution. There are specific duties that each branch of the federal government is responsible for. There is also called the nondelegation doctrine which states expressly that one branch of the federal government cannot delegate its power to any branch. this would require a constitutional amendment. The Legis lative branch must write legislation. The executive branch is supposed to give guidance to lead the legislative branch in the direction needed to achieve the direction the majority of the electorate wants.Article1 sec8 of the Constitution divides these powers. Also read sec7 clauses 1&2 Article1.Nondelegation Doctrine is in the Debt section.

President's budget sinks, 97-0
No Democratic senator was willing to support it. Why would the Senate do that? After all, Obama is such a brilliant fellow and a great leader.

We‘re are here today because of greedy, bad decisions that were made before this government ever came into office so hopefully no one is dumb enough to blame the financial downfall which started
the housing downfall which in turn started the great economic downfall onto Obama.
If the Republican want things fair, then they need to leave Social Security and Medicare in place for people who are receiving in now-that’s fair. They would scream if someone tried to take an entitlement they were receiving such as their fully paid for health insurance away from them. Why is the United States the only county in the world that does not treat our elderly with the dignity that they desire? They took care of us, fed us, clothed us, sent us to school and now the Republican Party wants to start taking things away from them?
Then there is the oil company’s. They have made year after year money hand over hand while holding the American public hostage along with the car industry. We have lost our jobs so we can’t buy cars to get better gas mileage, the car manufactures won’t look seriously at alternative ways to fuel our cars and the oil companies don’t car, they just keep raising prices. But they need tax breaks? I think the people who but the gas are the ones that need the tax breaks.
So if we want fair-keep things the same with Social Security and Medicare for people receiving it but look at what can be done at possible changes that can be made to new people coming on and people who are receiving it that make over a set amount of money. Then do away with oil companies tax credit,
Then the biggest change we should make is a simple one-change our tax code. Take away all loopholes! None-nothing-NADA! But everyone pays 10% on their gross income. So someone who makes $1,000,000.00 will pay $100,000.00. Someone who makes $50,000.00 though will only pay $5000.00. We will still exemptions for family and 1 house but nothing else. No loopholes allowed and everything, everyone pays! Let’s see how that goes over.
GOP want it their way or no way at all. Seriously have you GOP supporters even looked at what they intend to cut? And don't get me started on tax breaks, the tax breaks happened where are the jobs now? Their logic was tax breaks will create jobs because this will lead to more hiring. Where I work there is no hiring all I can tell you is part of my responsibility went to India, Welcome to the Free Market. Yes there was a job cut, my workload doubled, and my company does not plan on hiring anytime soon. The tax cut saved the company money and the corporate fat heads got a big raise for cutting cost (jobs). If your focus is small government then your going to let corporations move jobs overseas and in the long run what jobs are really left in America? Oh the economy will work itself out, how may I ask will that happen?
Sometimes I think that "flat tax" idea is not so bad after all.
Don't forget President Obama was a Professor of Constitutional law. This has a great impact on his interpretation of the Constitution.Reading and understanding the Constitution would help people to understand his motives. But I suppose that would be too much work. It is easier to just complain because you don't understand.
Wake up people! Obama isn't avoiding specifics because he doesn't have them! He's still in negotiations with the Republicans, so he can't publicly say what he wants because they won't like it.
Obama has compromised a lot. Too much if you ask me (tax cuts). Look at the top of this article for a second. 81% of Americans favor a surtax on people making more than $1 Million. 74% favor eliminating tax breaks for oil and gas companies that are raking in record-braking profits. The formula is simple. Let taxes go back up a little for the rich, (they will still be much lower than the rates in the 1950s and 1960s), compromise on $2 trillion of budget cuts. The GOP won't budge on the taxes, but more than 3/4 of Americans disagree with them. I hope that bites them in the butt in the next election!
I have read all of the articles on the web saying that the "entitlements" are the fiscal problem. I have also read the articles stating that entitlements to the public need to be reduced. I have not, however, read an article stating that Congress was willing reduce their own entitlements, to provide the population with an example. I would think that if Congress had a collective conscience, this would have been the "first" step to convince the American people of the seriousness of the situation........ Hasn't happened. Looks like it's a matter of, "It's good for you, but it's not good for "us'.
I am sure NBC is not biased but, where was this poll conducted and who was polled? People waiting at an inner city welfare office?
its always easy to agree to have the Government take other peoples money......
Liberals - How long would your family survive if you spent more than what you take in each month? If you have a sliver of a brain, your answer should be "not very long". Why is it acceptable for this government to continue spending like there's no tomorrow? This country has to stop its spending, but the proplem is that goes 100% against the community organizer ideology. Grow government, create entitlements so people become more dependant on the government, etc, etc. Wake up Libs, this country was not founded on entitlements, it was founded on personal sacrifice and hard work.
You folks who insist that Obama has had more than enough time to "fix"' the economy and enemployment have what's called the "instant gratification, I want it now" syndrome. It will take more than a few months, or even years, to fix the handiwork of the Bush administration. This is yet another bogus talking point of the right...Obama and the Dem Senate has had plenty of time to fix this or that. The truth is, Republicans have little interest in fixing anything if it improves Obama's standing with the electorate. Just look at the outlandish number of filibusters the right have initiated in the Senate since Obama became President. Essentially, it now takes 60 votes to pass any bill of substance in the Senate when the Constitution intended it take a simple majority...50 votes....in all but exceptional circumstances. Evidently every vote is now considered an exceptional circumstance by the right in the Senate, since virtually all bills are filibustered, thereby requiring 60 votes. This is an outrageous abuse of the Constitution IMHO. Anyone else agree with my HO? The Republican's primary objective is to take back the White House at any cost, however unethical.
KC, do you realize that the recovery is taking longer than it did from the depression? Do you remember when Obummer had full control of both houses AND STILL never submitted a balanced budget? You fricken liberals will give this community organizer more hall passes....
Unethical the way the Repubs are trying to take back the WO, do you have specifics? If you would like specifics about BO, try craming Obummercare down our throats, closed door deals, etc. Try suing the state of Arizona for trying to defend their borders. Pull your head out of your ASS.....
KC, huh?
Good try GB....I sited one of the many unethical practices to take back the WH...the sheer number of filibusters initiated in the senate in the past couple of years to keep any vote from passing that might actually do some good, a foreign concept to you and your dwindling righty buds. And spare me your newfound concern about a balanced budget. Where were you baggers when Bush inflated the deficit big time when he was in office only a few years? You baggers came out of the woodwork only when a black man became President. You backwoods bigots couldn't acknowledge your disgust at having a black president, so you glommed on to the deficit as your primary issue. Give me a friggin' break. As for "Obamacare", evidently you're opposed to another 50 million people having a modicum of health care....typical.
I agree something should be done about the undocumented, but I'm not a fan of letting them die in the desert of heat stroke or harass and humiliate them like you're hero Arpiao, who's nothing but a biggotted bully with a badge.
Brilliant comment Gregor
hey Brilliant KC.....the Republicans are unethical? Your just another lying liberal hypocrite
oh yeah, I just thought of a shovel ready job too....turns out the Presidency is a shovel ready job since O'bama is shoveling s*@* at the American people - thankfully many are finally seeing through it....
Yeah, probably Glenn. Let Fox News take the poll instead. They'll go poll all the CEOs on Wall Street and that would be a better poll because those people are more American than the rest of us.
I agree with you completely KC. But the statement I agree with the most is, "The Republican's primary objective is to take back the White House at any cost, however unethical."
That point is obvious, but Americans need to realize that and vote those idiots out of office.
We are not a Democracy or a Republic, we are a Plutocracy.
Plain and simple
Is is just me.......but I did not see a thing about reducing the 7 to 10 LAYERS of redundant government from the Federal level to the state level. Why do we need so many politicians & Law Enforcement officers and officials doing the exact same job over and over again.
For instance, why, does it take SO MANY officers from SO MANY different police agencys to apprehend a suspect holed up in his own home or to serve a warrant to do a search and seizure. Why are we paying for ALL these officers and their LOCAL administrations to supply them with bullet proof office buildings, brand new patrol cars each year, cars that are left idiling (wasting incredible amounts of fuel annually), brand new uniforms when the officer is overweight and can not fit into the originally issued one, and on and on. Or how about the INVINCIBLE PBA UNION that just protects crooked & corrupt cops.
Politicians are no better with their PRIVATE (tax payer funded) insurance and benefits programs as well as the incredible small amount of time they are actually working for US in congress each year and the outragious salaries that are paid to these bums annually.
You could easily cut 50% of the FAT right there and the jobs that they do by whom still have a job could still be done (unfortunately for them, they might have to actually WORK for once in their lives)........... and the US Taxpayer would save HUNDREDS of BILLIONS each year.
Why am I the only one who gets it????
It's your tax dollars people. Doesn't matter whether you are a democrat or republician.
Nuff said........
This is why we need that idiot Obama out of office and all the other idiots who voted for this bill...that's OUR money!
www.thefederalregister.com/d.p/2009-02-04-E9-2488
What kind of bull is this? How about asking how many want to eliminate foriegn aid. How about a freeze on these fools pay? How about getting rid of this fancy furniture they have in their office? Why is it that the Americans have to give up, first.
The problem is the republicans have signed a pledge against raising taxes and now find themselves trapped by their own signature.
How are other countries emerging from their debt problems, oh by raising taxes. If this falls apart I hope voter punish the Republicans. They deserve nothing but our contempt.
The world's economy is in trouble the USA economy does not work in a vacuum. Remember that.
SS was meant to be a kind of insurance for when a personwas old and no longer employable. The money from the paycheck was like a premium. The conservatives yelled socialism, but even a consevative supreme court upheld it. Most recipients don`t getmore than subsistence, in spite of what some people think. I don`t lnow about other people, but Medicare payments are deucted from mine every month, so I don`t get that free, either. Most of my medical over the past 5 years resulted from a broken arm (from a fall) and tests the doctors insisted I have, and cataract surgery (the doc said I almost waited too long for it). I was a hospital tech and I have no liking for meedical things since I was retired. My employer was looking to cut staff, and I was 66, so I got leaned on to go. BTW I ~m not sure a chump could beat Obama, but the way the opposition is going, I expect we`ll get to see.
Federal budget cuts would be well served to begin with eliminating, or seriously downsizing, any government agency with a 3 letter title (TSA, DEA, NSA, ATF, CIA, FBI, etc. etc. ad. nauseum)
I guess when you're on the Left you hear what you want to hear. I have not seen any specifics on what cuts, how much, where they would come from, anything that tells anyone one just what exactly he is proposing. The one time he vaguely alluded to entitlements being on the table, Nancy Pelosi put a quick stop to anyone having any allusions that that would ever happen. During the last budget debate the Republicans were bamboozled into thinking they had negotiated hundreds of billions in cuts while instead it has been reported the actual cuts were only about 5% of that hundreds of billions number being bandied about.
Once "specifics" are nailed down on these trillions in proposed cuts, then I would look at eliminating all tax subsidies, shelters, and loop holes for the wealthy that cannot definitely be attributed to creating domestic jobs. However first we want to see actual specifics. Specifics mean that we will hear Nancy Pelosi, and Harry Reid crying for their entitlements, just as increased revenues will mean we will hear the Republicans cry about taxes. Specifics aren't vague statements, but programs, and dollar figures in the sacred holy grail of Democrat spending.
Talking to Obama or any Liberal for that matter is like talking to Jello for sure.. If you disagree with them you are automatically wrong . They are destroying this country and we have to stop them !
Liberal=idiots
"If you disagree with them you are automatically wrong"
I find it comical that whenever conservatives attempt to describe liberals they are in fact describing themselves.
Eric Cantor is that you? You are acting like a child again. If you want to discuss things with the grown-ups you have to stop throwing fits and name calling.
The problem between liberals and the rest of the country is that the rest of the country has a philosophy that they subscribe to. Liberals have an idol.
Talking to Boehner, Cantor, McConnell, Bachman, Pawlenty or any Conservative for that matter is like talking to Jell-o for sure. If you disagree with them you are automatically wrong. They are destroying this country and have to be stopped!
Conservatvies = Moronic Hypocrites !
Mike, you completely screwed up on your comparison. Boehner said dealing with Obama was like daling with Obama because he was always wobbling one way or another. The republicans have pretty much stayed on message.
I don't see why people attack Social Security, Medi-Care and Unemployment as entitlements. Everyone pays into them. You pay more to Social Security in your working lifetime than you do Federal Taxes! I agree with cutting those benefits for wealthy Americans of course. They've shown over the last few years they have no intent to use their tax credits and breaks to help any fellow citizen through these rough financial times, so to heck with them.
A note: why is the EPA in this at all? What does anyone have against clean air and water? Very strange viewpoints there. You have to see by the crap and threats these big companies throw out constantly and think rationally. Do you want a constantly increased risk of cancer and other debilitating diseases?
One last thought: does anyone know if our public servants from Mayors to Congress get Social Security on top of their lifetime free healthcare and pensions? Perhaps they should have to live like everyone else and live off of what they made, pay their taxes relative to what they have and watch their Medicare benefits slowly shrink away.
Just an aside. Thomas Gollisano just contributed another 20 million for a childrens hospital in Rochester NY, adding to the tens of millions he has already donated. This generosity is duplicated all over this country from "the rich". Instead of moronically bitching about the "rich", read up a little about how much is actually "given" to America from these supposedly greedy individuals.
And Jon - I don't think anyone is "attacking" those programs it is just that they are unsustainable without some major adjustments.
What the republicans are doing (again) is extortion, plain and simple.
And Obama isn't practicing Economic Terrorism against the elderly, the weak and the infirm.
