Politico’s Rogers said Obama was greeted by “a double-barrel blast” by McConnell, who peremptorily rejected any deal that would include the added revenues Obama wants together with spending cuts… The administration insists that a “significant” agreement was still possible, but it also adopted a more combative tone Monday in response to the stalemate.”
White House officials told the New York Times: “Mr. McConnell, who has raised the prospect of a short-term increase in the debt limit if the two sides cannot agree, appeared to be banking on Democratic reluctance to take two votes on a debt limit increase before the 2012 elections to force them to agree to savings from cuts in Medicare and Medicaid without new revenue.”
The meeting lasted more than an hour, but McConnell’s team is mum on the content of it. An aide told First Read that “one way or another it will” get done by Aug. 2nd.
The Washington Post reports the two sides have agreed on at least $1.3 trillion, though Republicans are pushing for closer to $1.7 trillion. “How the negotiators reach the $2 trillion line has set off an ideological battle across the Capitol,” the Post writes.

Every "cut" is on the table, but not revenue increasers. As Andrea Mitchell said that if Republicans won't raise taxes then how can they really negotiate?
The Democrats as the Party of Government, fight tooth and nail for confiscating from the productive citizens, and spending money we dont have on wasteful pork-barrel government programs. They represent the Government, not the people.
How can they really negotiate?
Bob - Like all of Michelle Bachmann's government subsidies she received for her so called "Farm" and the pork she made sure she got for her state???? Yeah wasteful pork barrel government programs that "only" the Democrats have control over. Really? Hah!!
We are not talking about who got what. We are talking about the debt. The reason nothing can be done is that you democrats are more interested in placing blame then you are in fixing problems. And fearless leader is the best at placing blame. Had he worked on the problem when he had a democrat congress he could have gotten what the wanted. But NO he had to make a name for himself.
After meeting with Biden and Reid yesterday afternoon, Obama announced that, based on the meeting, he was confident that a "bipartisan" agreement would be reached.
Does he understand the meaning of the word "bipartisan'?
Probably as well as he understands the word "posthumous".
Yes, he obviously does understand, but just as obviously McConnell, Boehmer, Cantor & company do NOT.
Nov. 2012: bye-bye!
You should be asking that question of the Party of No who hasn't been bipartisan with our President since he took office on ANY bills or issues. Please re-assess your perspective.
The party of No is also the party of the Pledges: Grover Norguist No New taxes, Susan B. Anthony Pledge, and DeMitt's Presidential Pledge for candidates.
Norquist was on Coburn Report last night. Whats with this guy? Seriously, does he really have the signed pledge by each Repub. in a vault somewhere?
I guess the person who Obama should be negotiating with Norquist, an unelected official who really calls the shots for his puppets in Congress
So correct Turnabout
But they are so out of touch with American people that they do not realize the facts nor real world sentiment. They have been so busy chasing and worshiping a dollar that they have become myopic to the problems and concerns of average citizens - or maybe they really just don't care. Either way, they need to be GONE from our government ASAP.
WHO IS Norquist?????
Who cares?????
He certainly has no business in OUR business, and should be locked away from Washington D.C. (or else indicted and tried for sedition and/or treason.) Just my opinion.
Based on your inane comment, you ARE "as stupid as we think"....in line with most leftists.
Hey moderator, can you cut Bob here for a few days. All he can muster up is a bunch of name calling. He contributes nothing at all.
Why thank you Bobby -
Just what we have come to expect from Norquist supporting teabagger wingnut repubnut sheeple who are unable to think for themselves... we have heard it from you guys so often.
It really is getting old, and I truly believe you will see the results of your actions and stance Nov. 2012. I could be wrong... but probably NOT.
Good morning, Not as
GREAT POINT.
Bashed on Amused In The Midwest comment we should probably ban not as stupid as you think as well.

"...we should probably ban not as stupid as you think as well."
Truth hurts too much?
Like most liberals, truth has nothing to do with it. You all complain about name calling and then turn around and throw out a few insulting names. Typical left wing hypocrisy.
You might want to re-read through the thread Rick...
This last post certainly looks to be reflection to most readers on here; but I guess that is typical spin tactics of you conservatives.
"Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." J.C.
p.s. I believe TRUTH has everything to do with it.
come on people, wake up and die right? screw the t-pubs and their threats. deficits go up and down through out history. revenues reduce deficits.
vote no on debt ceiling and the world economy crashes.
do you really think that's what wall street wants? I think not.
dems quit playing these t-pub games and call the vote. leverage is everything!
no more pieces here and there. increase taxes on wealthy. remove tax loopholes. remove subsidies for oil. treat capital gains as normal income. and, for god sake, eliminate all speculators.
Bob: Do you have a position on issues or do you just bash Obama? You have one vote in your state for President. Choose whomever you desire. Talk up their ideas. Discuss (rationally) your viewpoints with those who disagree. If you think "liberal" is a dirty word, then don't say dirty words. (Same thing for those who bash Republicans with dirty names.)
Try to think where this country would be without Medicare, Social Security. Pell Grants, and the like. Have you been to Africa? None of those exist there. Might have to worry about other tribes coming in and marauding, killing, etc. But what the hay? GOVERNMENT isn't the problem there. Or is it?
Fred - your post just may carry some influence with posters on this blog if you used the same criticism on some of the liberals posting here. But my main purpose is to remind you that Medicare and SSI are rapidly running out of money. Obama is projecting the national debt to reach 20 trillion by 2016. Do you have any idea how we are to pay our obligations to SSI and Medicare. I've heard the suggestions about raising the cap and increasing deductions but projections are that entitlement payments will exceed the gdp in 2049. It is obvious that all those tax and spend democrats don't care about our children and grandchildren but some of us actually do care.
I have to play the idiot on this. The press is tossing around $1.3, $1.7 and $2 trillion without any context. It would be nice to know in advance whether the Dems have already sold me out. No one has mentioned any defense cuts, so the $1.3 on up is apparently ALL domestic spending? And is it even mathematically possible to come up with $1.3, let alone $1.7 trillion from "discretionary" spending, or have "entitlements" already been thrown under the bus? And if my math works out, it appears that the Dems are refusing to go higher than $1.3 or $1.7 in cuts in exchange for either or both some combination of revenue increases or defense cuts. Without some context, I too could join the negotiations and ante up my own billions or trillions. If I'm going to take the time to read the "liberal" press with which I agree, I'd at least like them to do their part and sound the alarm so that I have a fighting chance to get to the life boats, or write to my congressman.
