Jose Cuevas, you are a friend of mine...

Speaking at a National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) event in San Antonio yesteday, Texas Gov. Rick Perry delivered a joke that reportedly fell flat with the Hispanic audience.

“Young Hispanics in Texas can aspire to be the next Rolando Pablos, the chairman of the Texas racing commission; maybe the next Roberto de Hoyos, who heads our economic development shop; and one of my favorites, the head of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission Jose Cuevas."

The joke: Cuevas sounds a lot like the tequila brand Jose Cuervo.

"Is that awesome? That is the right job for that man," Perry said.

As the AP noted, "But a joke about how perfect it was to appoint Jose Cuevas to the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission because his name sounds like Jose Cuervo - a brand of tequila - fell flat. Perry struggled to regain his confidence as he described Texas as a land of opportunity."

Ursula - You should be happy that Gov. Perry made a gaffe. I mean doesn't it lend itself to how inedpt the republicans are? This should thrill you to no end. Of course, not a soul can beat Obama... especially when you can see how insensitive they are to various elements of life. No democrat has ever told a bad joke, or made a slip up in public... right?

Slick Rick is an IDIOT and an unapologetic liar!

Bilking Texans to the tune of more than $10,000.00 per month for 3 years as he lives in a privately owned estate while the Governors Mansion is STILL under repair after being torched! I'm more than sure the property is owned by one of his insiders.........

This is an outrage....why has it taken sooooo long to get back to the 'rent free' Governors Mansion?

That's okay GF, anyhow most Americans don't want another President from Texas that looks like the lead in an old Western movie.

They already had one BB gun slinging cowboy from Texas.

Texas Is a Shining Example of Right-Wing Governance in Action and That's Why It's a Complete Basket-Case

In addition to Perry's joke about Jose Cuervo falling flat at the root could be the governor's inclusion of a "sanctuary city" bill in the special session of the state legislature. The bill threatens to withhold state aid from local governments that prevent police officers from asking about immigration status. Hispanics may also be upset with a bill Perry signed into law last month, requiring photo identification at polling stations. Both are hot-button issues for Latinos.

Plus, Texas is facing the worst budget deficit in the nation. 90% of the jobs are low-wage and so

-ranked 47th on SAT scores and just cut $7 billion from education
-ranked 4th for most chemicals released into the environment
-facing an estimated $34 billion budget shortfall in the next budget
-ranked 3rd for the amount of stimulus received. Most was to plug the holes in the state budget and some was used to create a new interchange at DFW airport.
-ranked as the 6th most violent state
-ranked 2nd for the most people incarcerated
-ranked 9th for poverty. It is to the point where they're turning existing highways into toll roads, closing schools and firing our public teachers, already amongst the worst paid in the country.

Increasing America 's debt weakens us domestically and internationally.
Leadership means that 'the buck stops here.' Instead, Washington is shifting the

"First time I saw 10th Mountain Division, you guys were in southern Iraq. When I went back to visit Afghanistan, you guys were the first ones there. I had the great honor of seeing some of you because a comrade of yours, Jared Monti, was the first person who I was able to award the Medal of Honor to who actually came back and wasn't receiving it posthumously," Obama said.

Monti, however, died in Afghanistan in 2006. He was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously in 2009 for his actions sacrificing his own life to try and save a fellow soldier. "

Just to clear up the "If true" potential conspiracy:

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney acknowledged the error.

"At Fort Drum, the president misspoke when discussing the first Medal of Honor he presented posthumously to Jared Monti, who was a member of the 10th Mountain Division," Carney said in a statement. "The president paid tribute to Monti in his remarks to troops in Afghanistan in March 2010. Last year, the President presented the Medal of Honor to Salvatore Giunta, who was the first living recipient of the Medal who served in Afghanistan."

The claim was the President was speaking from "Unprepared Remarks". Sucks when you don't have someone to tell you what to say, I guess.....

He was right both times. The deficit then, as now, is the result of the Bush's failed leadership, Bush's tax cuts, Bush's wars, and the Bush Recession. Obama's only significant contribution to the deficit is the $800 billion stimulus, spread over several years.

Perry has shown so many times his gross incompetence across the state as was evident in the debates where he and Hutchinson lost to Debra Medina. Now he opens his mouth and spews his negative humor in the direction of the Hispanic Texans. I wonder if his teleprompter was working or if his speech writers could write. He cannot think on his feet as was noted here. In my eyes of Texas, it hurts Perry because it show how incompetent he is. It amplifies the gross incompetence of the Conservative Legislature which cannot stay on track on one specific topic(is-State Budget) and complete it. It shows how scattered Perry is by his infusing non-necessary legislation like making it illegal in Texas for TSA to pat down a flying customer in an attempt to show how important he is.(An ill-advised publicity stunt) His infusing of laws to forcing pregnant women to have a Sonogram, forcing his own private religious beliefs onto Texas women. Perry refusing to utilize the "Rainy Day Fund" to fund schooling for Texas children, making the children of Texas suffer for his gross incompetence and ineptness. Texas is worse off now than ever before since Perry took over in the Governorship.

Am I missing something?  The crowds laughter (twice) did not make the joke appear to "fall flat".  Sounded like it was a hit.  Rather him make a joke that some in the MSM think fell flat, then to get wrong the name of a Medal of Honor recipient who was killed in action.  Nice work Obama.
