You know Drive By, I'm really starting to think you don't actually know what that term means.

Or maybe you haven't been paying much attention lately? Wait, I know, head in the sand, pretending all is well.

Ok, sure let's go with that, because as you know it just me, and I'm the only one curious about this very irrelevant issue.

Tell me why it's relevant, cap'n.

Some people posted some common postions on (in?) a chat room, and now you think someone has to have dirty hands because of it?

Well- lay it all out for us. And try to keep it relevant- no Volt jokes, ok?

I have nothing to "lay out" for you my man. I think we are just waiting for confirmation form Murry/Dominico. It was covered rather well on an earlier thread or two.

But then again, and as Anna Molly can tell you there is a concept [which is a jury instruction here] know has admission by silence.

Wow, I just read today's comments. Let me make some important clarifications:

    1. I was invited by some of First Read oldest posters -- people who have forged friendships on this site -- to speak at their gathering and attend a Cardinals baseball. Since I was flattered that what we do here has inspired this gathering, and since I will be in the area that weekend, I agreed to stop by.

    2. NBC/MSNBC is in no way paying for the others in attendance. I'm paying for my one-night stay and my baseball ticket. That's it from NBC/MSNBC.

    3. I agreed to sit down with these folks to answer their questions about First Read and what I do at NBC.

    4. In no way, shape, or form does First Read want to silence liberal, conservative, or any other opinions on the site. We are in the business of free political speech here; that's what makes America great.

    5. I would be happy to attend any future events sponsored by bloggers and readers -- of any political persuasion. Let me tell you: We're in the business of keeping all of our readers happy -- conservative, liberal, or independent.

    6. In the past, liberal and conservative readers have contacted me via email or Facebook. I'm happy to friend any of you on Facebook, and I'm pretty easy to find.

    7. I hope this answers your questions. If you have any others, please let me know.

    Thanks for the response.

Perhaps you can further clarify what seems to be a primary issue for many.

How are the collapses, deletions, and bans handled?

By way of example, and has you have no doubt read in the comments today, there appears to be a bias toward certain posters who are allowed to routinely violate the Code Of Conduct without repercussion, whereas other posters face immediate consequences.

For instance Feisty was particularly offensive last Friday. She flat out went at NoJo, and her comments included references to NoJo's husband, granddaughter, and firearms. Is this acceptable? Are there limits, and what, if anything will be done on your end? Clearly nothing was done in this instance, and that was very upsetting to many here.

I understand that policing the comments is very hard. I have no problem when tempers ratchet up. Another very recent example, and one that was just ridiculous occurred yesterday when Feisty called me a 'pussy'. Although somewhat amusing, and certainly telling of issues she clearly has, I have seen others deleted, and in some cases banned, for less.

Of course I am using Feisty as an example, she is by no means alone in running afoul of the COH. But is sure does not appear that it is enforced on an equal basis.

This suspicion is of course heightened now that we learned that you are meeting with a certain group of regulars. Bias is a funny thing. Easy to allege, hard to counter.

So the question becomes, given your upcoming meeting, and the widely agreed upon appearance of favoritism here, how do we attain a comfort level that all participants on this forum are indeed treated equally?

Again, all of these issues, and many more have been covered multiple times today. I invite you to personally review all of the related comments.

    Good one Feisty.

Say you think that's how Clarence Thomas views all this talk of impeachment and conflict of interest?

Why I just bet he does - that a "certain" crowd is armed with torches and pitch forks and are out to get him.

As stated above bias is so very hard to disprove. In fact for many, once it is alleged the taint never, ever goes away.

But I'm sure you all will have a super fun time at your meeting.

Others, who may make a mild comment may be suspended or removed from the site while you continue your attacks

    Really?

Care to site some examples? As I said earlier I've been called everything from a festering ass pimple to dumber than dog snot! And those are the nicer things that have been flung my way!

Not ONLY was NO action taken against those posters, the right wingers voted those comments up and piled on!

    Spanky,

Thanks for the question. Let me make a general point before I discuss my personal philosophy about the comments on the blog: When Newsvine took over as host of the blog, Domenico and I ended our personal moderation of the forum. It's run by Newsvine. I read the comments, but it's probably about 1% of my day (which is why I'm just responding to all this stuff).

Domenico and I have absolutely nothing to do with its moderation. From time to time, some posters have contacted me -- arguing about an injust ban or another complaint, and I'm happy to relay that message to Newsvine, but that's it. Spanky, if you feel that something is unjust, shoot me an email. Mine isn't hard to figure out.

Now it is our philosophy that First Read should always err on the side of free speech, since politics can be a heated discussion. We don't appreciate obscene language or threats of violence, or anything that would be below the belt.

But since we err on the side of free speech, I think it's important for commentors to have thick skin. I can tell you that Domenico and I don't always get the nicest responses here. But you know what -- it comes with the territory of being a political journalist. And if you're posting on a popular political blog, you should probably have thick skin, too.

As for bias, I can assure you that what Domenico and I often write irritates the heck out of some liberal posters. And ditto conservatives. My promise to you is that if you ever have a similar gathering, I'll be there. Also, if you're in the DC area, I'd be happy to have a cup of coffee with you.

As I said earlier, we're in the business of making you guys happy -- liberal, conservative, or independent. And we appreciate you guys making this you're blogging home.

    Any more questions?

    #1.26 - Thu Jun 23, 2011 7:39 PM EDT

Nope, that about covers it for me. I think it is very insightful, at least to me, that you guys are out of the moderation side. I suspect that it is a relief for you, and I think it is better that way for everyone.

I would suggest that you re-post this stuff tomorrow. Many have quit for the night.

Oh nice job on Chuck's show this a.m. But dude - could you please tell Chuck the soup segment has got to go?

Mark: I feel badly that it has turned into this. I AM an older poster, almost 60, and I am appalled that my love for politics has been attacked this way. I do understand what you mean about a thick skin. I have been called several names on FR, and used a few myself. But hacking a private group? That is over the line.

    Mark...

Thanks for taking the time to clear things up. And take this as an open invitation...next time you or Domenico are in South Florida, you are cordially invited to join in Grimey's Political Happy Hour. (OK...so it's just me and some friends sitting at a bar by the water, but I digress). Honestly...quite a firestorm erupted here today and I'm thankful that you addressed the situation. Much appreciated. And be careful...I've got lots of family in Maryland, so I may take you up on that cup of coffee!! ;-)

A few things from my point of view:

-There was no hacking of the newsvine site...it appears to have been set up as a public group and thus, yes, as someone mentioned before, you can see it if you google it. I'm pretty sure that it was never meant to be set up as public.

-I read through quite a few of the pages and I don't see where ANYONE saw that Mark Murray was paying for a gathering of liberals in St. Louis. I also never saw any sort of collusion between Mark and the posters at the Libs R Us site.

-Personally, the gathering is in my mind kinda cool. Mark is a political reporter. I'm sure he speaks to all sorts of liberals, conservatives, and moderates every day. That doesn't mean that he agrees with what they tell him or allows them to influence him. I have many liberal friends and we talk politics all the time...yet I remain a moderate / conservative.

-I see nothing wrong with a group of people that share political leanings having a newsvine site to themselves. There's nothing stopping the conservative posters from doing something similar. Just make sure to set it up as private ;-) (Lisa s...should we set up the Moderates are Us site...we might be the only members!! LOL!!) Honestly, I think it's cool that they've developed strong bonds and friendships through this site. That's awesome and I hope you enjoy the gathering (or enjoyed...can't tell if it's happened yet).

-Where I may have a problem is if the posters on the site are colluding to get rid of posts that they don't agree with. I haven't really looked at any of the postings about that though. I mostly was looking at the posts related to Mark. I have no problem with getting rid of posts that include profanity or personal attacks however.

-I'm hoping that everyone can dial back some of the name calling. Look...people get passionate about politics. But most of us don't know much about the person behind the posting. Since Feisty is getting a lot of attention, let me say this...she is very passionate about her politics. She is probably targeted more than anyone here. Does she go over the top sometimes? Sure. I believe she went too far with No Jo the other day. Do people go over the top talking about her sometimes? Absolutely. Just go through the archives and look at some of the despicable names she's been called. But, let me tell you something...I've traded some e-mails with her in the past and despite agreeing on very little politically, I have found her to be a good friend.

I'm confident that everyone else in our group will back me up on that! ;o)

PPS: As for the hacking thing - we were assured according to Newsvine that the conversation was NOT available to NON - members. Maybe Newsvine needs to clean up their act!

    Just for the record.

The questions Spanky asked relates more to him than Fiesty. He and others have attacked her with the nastiest statements possible. They come on the board and make no other comment except attacking her. This was said of Spanky.........I too am surprised that Sapnky is still here seeing how he has spent the last week making these people his collective prison bitch....He epitomize the name republican hypocrite.

When I first came on FR, Fiesty made me feel very welcomed and we would banter back and forth. It made a person who label themselves as "a black republican", attacked me by calling me all kind of derogatory names based only on the fact that I considered Feisty a friend.

I feel pity for these sad excuses for men, who feel the need to jump on her and they get very angry because she brushes them off. I suppose if they cant get the real thing, they have to settle for cyber.

Um, guys? On a couple of other threads, the proverbial excrement has come into violent contact with the oscillating device.

In othernwords, the jig is up.

Seems a member of the private club was either a mole, or became disenchanted- my money is on the latter, as Obama is losing supporters faster than a Jenny Craig client loses pounds.

In any event, the collusion between Mark Murray, Domenico, ( although that seems more tenuous), and the moderators, and this group, is being revealed, post by post.

Coordinated effortsmto collapse posts of those who do not chant the Obama mantra, coordinated efforts to suspend accounts of the same people, having the moderators ignoremthe most egregious violations of the code of honor by certain posters- and the little convention planned for July in St, Louis, with one big name in particular in attendance for the express purpose of holding a roundtable to discuss how to get those who disagree with the "38" off the board-

    Not good stuff. Not professional.

No DBO, if there was any punishment for COH violations they would have their accounts suspended, all of you and you know who you are as do the rest of us now.

Sadly, DBO, that would be the professional thing to do, something you clearly know nothing about.

    Oops- cut myself off.

If Comcast is not interested, it might be fun to see what BC or CBS had to say on the subject.

    Or Fox.

Mixed Bag brought up Jon Stewart's reaction- to, you know, such obvious proof of media bias- but I think it might be more fun if Breithbart got hold of this.

Wonder what he could do with the collusion between the Deputy Political Director of NBC and a group of liberal bloggers, in order to shut down opposing voices?

Granted, it is not in the same league as bringing down a congressman, but, heck, I bet he has time on his hands right now.

Laughing stock of the media, yes, but crime?

    Nah.

Anymore than a certain congressman committed a crime.

How is he doing, by the way? Career on track? Planning to run for mayor?

It's pretty much the same level of dumb.

Shouldn't the Deputy Political Director of a major mainstream TV news network avoid attending a private gathering of liberal, or for that matter, conservative bloggers associated with a website run by his/her employer?

Y' might have someting there. Good thing it wasn't an OWNER of a 'major mainstream TV news' network, huh? Like, say, the head of GE using NBC to support, oh, I don't know......some "grass roots" movement of far right-wingers or somethinng?

There is your answer, Mixed Bag- and it makes a pretty obvious point-

That none of the people involved in this group thought there was anything at all wrong with their "special privileges"- making truly nasty posts that violated the CoH, with no repercussions; collapsing comments with which they disagreed, another violation, by the way; getting posters with whom they disagreed suspended, meeting up with the Deputy Political Director who was responsible for all these special privileges- is understandable.

That Murray, the moderators, and whoever else was involved is not.

I have long decried the lack of professionalism. It is now displayed in all its dubious glory.

Somebody just emailed me Mark Murray's response to this controversy.

    I have a question-

If there is no "special relationship" between him and the 38, how is it that direct violations of the Code of Honor by those members are overlooked- to the exclusion of everyone else?

    Makes no sense.

If the moderators are now "hands off", why were all the posts related to this deleted so soon?

Sorry- the "explanation" raises more questions than it answers.

Don't you realize that First Read is the only thing that brings these people any kind of happiness??? It must be wonderful to be able to sit at home all day on their computer, day in and day out, and do nothing but moan and complain anonymously on what used to be a wonderful political blog like First Read like they do!!!

So let them have their little "victories"!!! Let them have their little "moment in the sun"!!! They obviously have nothing else going on in their lives!!!(The proof is in the number of times they post on here on any given day!!! Seriously, what's up with that??? I'm looking at you here, you ravishing ginger-headed Jezebel!!!) YES, fight on, my liberal brothers and sisters!!! Continue preaching to that dwindling choir of First Read Faithful!!! I will continue to support your valiant effort to convince everyone on here of your limited point of view!!!

Mark Murray, Thanks for the well crafted response and the clarification on how the moderation works on this site. There is only one thing I take issue with in your response. I understand politics is a contact sport but even contact sports have penalties on unsportsmanlike behavior. There in lies the issue that most of the posters were talking about. The penalties don't seem to be applied evenly to all posters who violate the COH, especially when the group seeks to silence the others with opposing opinions to their right of free speech.

    Mark Murray:

    As to ksw62118's point.

This is a political blog, a forum and indeed you need a thick skin.

As for private chat rooms, glad to see so many people getting involved in politics. That is, indeed a very good thing.

The problem is not so simplistic though as this group is not that benign.

I have the entire 489 page transcript copied from the internet and would be more than happy to send it to you. I'm sure many others have it also.

This group, LIBSRUS, per their transcript, intentionally targeted people that disagreed with their political agenda and had their accounts suspended, posts collapsed either by flagging them as advertising (which is a deletion rather than collapse) or simply flagging them as inflammatory or no value. This is constant and persistent. The names of the targets are on each page and, in fact, their complaint was that MSNBC had not complied fast enough. Appartently, that was going to be a talking point with you at your scheduled round table.

If you read the transcript, Sally and Tyler, were their "in" and they promptly complied with the group emails and requests. I don't use the word promptly, loosely. Almost daily contact. Accounts deleted at the groups request. Appears, that several memos were sent directly to you on the topic of quicker deletions of "suspended accounts". That is, in many cases, accounts the group requested be closed.

They brag about it, job well done, good job, etc. The practice continues.

First, if this isn't a violation of the COH, nothing is and I would like an explanation.

Second, NoJoNoBo was personally attacked last week by Feisty and some members of the group, in a pile on that surprised many. You don't attack a woman"s granddaughter, her husband, accusing him of sleeping around and needing to have a gun put to his head cause "she's a cold heartless bitch". This person attack is a blatant violation of the COH, yet she seems immune to punishment. Why is this sort of dialogue countenanced and a cuss word not?

As to yesterday, every single post by now i'm here was deleted. Every one. If it wasn't by Sally and Tyler who did it and why? Again a COH violation code.

There is no appearance of impropriety, there is a systemic incidence of impropriety and some of us newer folks want to know why that is.

It we don't have the freedom to post knowing this "gang", not group, has the ability to take down our comments or have accounts deleted, then why bother posting here.

One of the members continually compares the GOP to the Nazi's. What they don't quite get is they've become the Nzai's as they want to and have become the arbiters of free speech on this site.

Their censorship, and the willing compliance of Tyler and Sally, makes this all suspect.

    Your comments please.

She, her granddaughter and husband were

I will only say this one time, but that damn Spanky is a menace, the way he harasses Amy is unacceptable. Anna Molly has done a great job on him, but he keeps coming back for more.

Well she is damn right about Anna Molly, but alas I do want more.

As for the rest, like I said - the idiots can coordinate all they want. Bottom line is there is no there there. And from the looks of it, they know it, hence Mamma's decision not to engage.

It appears that she has the good sense to acknowledge her limitations.

And poor dear Amy. I'll tell you I like her spunk, but man I do feel sorry for her. She's staring down retirement, yet has no retirement plan or savings. That would be horrible. Of course she's fighting to keep the tit flowing, it's plan A, B, and C.

It always amazes me people allow themselves to get into that position. So many choices made in life, so many wrong.
