NEW ORLEANS -- Ron Paul won the straw poll here at the Republican Leadership Conference overwhelmingly with 612 votes, drawing big boos and some quieter chants of "Ron Paul." Jon Huntsman finished a surprising second with 382 votes, despite being a late scratch because of a "bad cold." Michele Bachmann was third with 191 votes.
Herman Cain was fourth with 104 votes. Mitt Romney, the presumed front runner, who won the straw poll here a year ago, faded to fifth with 74 votes. Tim Pawlenty finished with just 18 votes, fourth from the bottom of the 12-person ballot, just ahead of Gary Johnson (10), Buddy Roemer (9), and Rep. Thaddeus McCotter (2).
Paul’s ardent followers packed the ballroom here before, during, and just after his speech, but they were barely seen listening to other speeches. They have organized to win straw polls at many other conservative events as well.
Romney, who did not attend this year or last, was criticized here for not signing onto a legislative pledge from anti-abortion-rights group Susan B. Anthony List. The group released the list of presidential candidates who signed onto the pledge yesterday afternoon. Most signed on; Romney did not.
That drew an attack from Rick Santorum:
"This past Monday night at the Republican Presidential Debate, I was asked about Governor Romney's pro-life conversion, and I gave him the benefit of the doubt," the former Pennsylvania senator running for president said in a statement."I apparently spoke too soon. It is incredibly disappointing that Governor Romney chose not to defend those who cannot defend themselves."
Romney's campaign responded in a statement to First Read this way:
"Governor Romney pledged in the last campaign that he would be a pro-life president and of course he pledges it today. However, this well intentioned effort has some potentially unforeseen consequences and he does not feel he could in good conscience sign it. Gov. Romney has been a strong supporter of the SBA List in the past and he looks forward to continue working with them to promote a culture of life."
A Romney adviser said on background that the SBA language goes too far, and would cut off funding to VA hospitals:
"The language in the pledge is to 'permanently end all taxpayer funding of abortion' (which the Gov. supports) but then goes on to say 'and recipients of federal funds with affiliates that perform or fund abortions' -- which you can see is very over-reaching and would include hospitals across the country."
The results:
Paul 612
Huntsman 382
Bachmann 191
Cain 104
Romney 74
Gingrich 69
Palin 41
Santorum 30
Pawlenty 18
Johnson 10
Roemer 9
McCotter 2

A man who cannot be bought and who walks the walk in upholding the Constitution scares the living daylights out of Progressives regardless of which side of the aisle they occupy. Dr. Ron Paul, a former military flight surgeon is the only one willing to bring our troops out of harm's way. Our troops swore an allegiance to the US Constitution, not to NATO and not to the United Nations. Stop the NWO in its tracks by electing Ron Paul 2012!
it is so scary the way i see this country going...GOP wants to give all the top companies and the top 2% tax cuts and credits and put it all on the poor and the middle class...but it seems like always the GOP offer changes and a Rosie picture and then once in office it to hell with you we only interested in help our large donors...
Huntsman? WTF? Hasn't even showed his face yet.
Ron Paul winning this totally discredits this poll. He is a major nutbag and would not stand a chance against Obama. Just look at the guy. He is also a pacifist. ight as well give Obama four more years and save millions of dollars on election expenses because Paul CANNOT WIN. Romney, on the other hand has a chance.
Right now I am behind Romney or Pawlenty, or Cain. I don't know the rest well enough and cannot wait until the governor of Texas throws his hat into the ring. Pawlenty seems to have the best record of success of any former governor. He needs to be much more assertive though.
Low intelligence gauge: when they use 'nutbag, loser" and junk like it as part of their argument if not all of the defense!
OK never mind, I read up before typing and saw Texas in there.
That explained it all, I won't bother posting a reply to Alan.
Dominoeeffect: Alan doesn't even use the word, "loser" in his comment at all. Also, you actually said you liked Mit in a previous comment on page 3 of this article. You are pretending to be against and for some of these candidates ... I can't believe you get your facts from you.tube, like you commented earlier on page 3...hmmmmmmmmm
Mitt Romney probably did so badly because he was not there. And as for Ron Paul's ignorance, Mark...or pretended ignorance anyway...here is a glaring example. He has a big picture of Ayn Rand in his office, yet he is apparently unaware of what she said about abortion rights:
"The enemy of abortion is no friend of capitalism...or freedom."
Source for this information? I strongly doubt his support of Ayn Rand is as vociferous as you make it out to be. In fact, in his book, Paul says he largely moved away from Randroidism and shifted more towards people like Murray Rothbard and Ludwig von Mises.
What he flip flopped ?
Sorry teasing a little, just had too.
Send in the clowns.
Don't bother there're here. (anyway running for President in the Tea/Republican Party.
Republicans don't stand a chance if they nominate an ideologue to run. The majority of voters dont support these religious causes, and no amount of name calling or whatever will change that. If anything you will energize voters to come out and vote against your candidate. Like women who want to keep their rights over their own bodies and reproduction. Union workers who want their rights back, etc. etc. Combine that with anti-big-business sentiment that is rampant.
And I see the left winning in a land slide.
What I love about the GOP is: the only candidate who could come close to beating Obama in 2012 (close is said) is getting the most static from his own party - Romney. The rest are losers nationally (this is the key word - nationally not losers) for a variety of reasons. One GOP is scary - Bachman (law degree from Oral Roberts Univ - gotta love that). One GOP is idealist without being real - Paul (abolish the Federal Reserve and other government institutions). One GOP is uneducated and too country folk for most - Palin (wink please). One GOP is another Mormon - Huntsman. You can see why the Republicans are having trouble with being preceived as credible. Obama will win in 2012 (I banked on it).
Bachman and the others need to back off on the abortion thing. When they asked Bachman if she would allow abortion in the cases of rape, incest, or the threat to the mother's life, she said she doesn't support abortion for anything. Excuse me, but if I was married and my wife was about to die due to a pregnacy complication, the hell with the baby, save my wife! I could never support Bachman due to this hard stance. Its ridiculous. And, who is going to take care of all the crack whore babies being born in our inner cities? Bachman? Sorry, I am tired of supporting them. -- I have a neighbor that has foster children, and he told me the one was an eighth child and the mother is pregnant again. They just get pregnant, out of wedlock, and get a pay raise in the form of increased welfare. Deplorable. This MUST STOP! That lady with the eight kids, going on nine, should have had her tubes tied after the first one. Many of her kids will probably wind up in prison.
Watch what happens if that "Abolish the Fed" snowball gets rolling.. There will be major backlash from
every direction-left, right and centre. The Eurobanks can't have that happen.
It's doubtful if it would happen. As Ron Paul stated (at least some of) his changes aren't planned to be immediate, as that would devastate the nation. It's like taking a person of drugs. If you do it cold turkey in some instances it kills.
Obama is a MUSLIM and you voted for him and want to vote for him again???? They believe in lying to the infidels..YOU AND ME..so now you can see why he says one thing and does the other. He hates America!
Don't knock others because of their religion! Be grateful they have moral values to run this country otherwise you end up with atheists in power who have no values and tell you what you want to hear and do whatever they wish!
Seriously Domino, I just have to put you on ignore after you still pushing that muslim crap over and over again still.

I like Ron Paul's honestly and conviction, but I am not convinced he would make a good president.
Ron Paul has honor that would be a great start
To all the fools who are afraid of Ron Paul ------- BOO. You Lose.
I glad your afraid of him, your probably the ones living off of the Big Government Hand-outs. No more free candy for you, get off your butts and get a job, oh yea thats right, the jerk you elected last time is clueless as to create them.
I live in Texas and I'm most definitely not afraid of Ron Paul; what I AM afraid of are those legions of sheep who'll follow him blindly into whatever fiasco he'll involve us in. And by the way, I'm an employed schoolteacher and so do not live on government handouts, and my insurance and healthcare are courtesy of my prior service as a U.S. Marine, so everything I have I EARNED.
And your the sheep of who? Who are you blindly following? Speak up so I can slam your pick.
You service to our country is commendable, but do you know that over 50% of our armed forces support Ron Paul.
Oh, a burn to the burn. ^5 Couldn't resist.
David- 50% I don't think so. Show me a poll, link? In your dreams!
Jeez, and average middle school could come up with more total votes. Why are we paying attention to this nonsense?
The health care cost is too high that no one can afford, including our MediCal/Medicare. The market of health care is already free, and it has been free since 1927. And the first study fro health care was done in 1937. It is because the health care has been the free market. No government regulations and mandates have been written. No government officials, from senates to representatives, have been able to change the free market to a controllable and affordable health care market.
The market of health care has been one of the highest cost and one of the lest coverage, from the plan to participants, in the world. Our neighbors, from across the Pacific Ocean to across the Atlantic Ocean, and from the north to the south, have the universal health care, and the governments can afford the plan.
France and Italy have the top notch universal health care plan. Now, Obama Care has finally rolled out the first step for the reform. It is just the first step for our stagnant health care plan.
Now it is because of the cost of the health care has been double every decade, but not our incomes, and the coverage is continually cutting. That is the reason why the coverage of MediCal is trimming, here and there.
The Senate and the House should read the Healthy People Survey 2010 and 2020. Both Surveys are done by USDHHS.
And the Civil Right Acts 1964 are to protect the majority, main street, not the minority, like Mr. Ron Paul.
I love how Republican candidates hold onto the most divisive issues with a death grip: abortion, gay marriage (who cares?) and gays in the military (who cares?) ultimately insuring another four years for one of the most ineffective Presidents in US history.
Based on Paul's comments during the debate, if there were a terrorist act in this country and the instigator (confirmed by intelligence) was standing out in the open in Yemen holding up a sign "I did it", Paul would just wave and smile at him. It would be laughable to watch Ron Paul in the WH - zero sense of practicality and no common sense for the real world, just libertarian purity. Everyone would enjoy watching his slow motion train wreck as purity collides with reality.
Do your homework before you make a comment. Marque and reprisal is what Ron Paul called for to get OBL. Look it up. And it would of cost alot less money and lives.
That is stretching things! Poor debate! RON PAUL ROCKS!
What happened? Mo Romney did not come in even second. Could it be that the Republican Party is well aware of the fact that Mo Romney has taken more positions on more issues than even Sen. John Kerry? Moreover, perhaps the RNC knows the real reason why Mo Romney was not at least a two term gov. of MA? That lying, mult-faced, means what he says while he is saying it azzhole would go to the temple and sell his maternal and paternal grandmothers into prostitution to get the GOP nomination and even then he would lose to Obama.
I believe Paul's district in Texas is just a few hours drive from New Orleans, making it relatively easy to stack the deck. But, Libertarians also see a shot to lead the Republicans Party...so they'll press ahead with every possible advantage they can muster.
Romney? Wouldn't surprise me to see him drop out, although he's probably the best candidate Republicans have in terms of the general election. He's beginning to look a little tired and frustrated.
If Romney fades, look to Perry to enter the race.
Stacking the deck in an area close to where a so called Federal disaster happened? Really! Stacking the deck where people have ALWAYS expected handouts? Strange statement stone, not even close to reality.
Hum..you think it's STACKING the deck that folks that have voted for him time and time again that live close by made this happen? They have LOTS of faith in him and so should we!! Contagious!
stone shhh please don't say that, we'd love to get rid of Perry but not to the detriment of the rest of the country.
Oh and New Orleans is a 14 hour drive for me and a 3 day drive for my friends from Cali, it's not just the people in his own district that were there.
Yay!!! Ron Paul 2012!!! He is the only one to put this country back on track! Everyone, please do your homework on all of them. Then you will see how they say all this wonderful stuff but when it comes down to it, they are all (But Ron Paul) part of the plan. Why do you think Pres. Obama is doing the same thing Pres. Bush did on all his policies. Wake Up America!!! Both parties are the same after you uncover there BS. Wake UP America!!!!! Let's STOP putting in the statue Quo in office. Wake UP America!! IT is TIME to Take this Country BACK!!! LEt'S RESTORE AMERICA NOW!!!!! RON PAUL 2012!!!!!

The libertarian view has never been fully accepted, it is starting to be, thank God! It really doesn't matter, the liberals still want us too spend when we have nothing. They rail the war effort, saying that it cost too much, pretend too support it, yet they want to give up nothing, in fact, they want to spend more, a lot on people that are not even citizens. This country is now in a hard spot, assets that are not even legal should be the first to go, no matter the cost, hell they aren't even assets. Stop trying to put more people on the unforgiving welfare line, even Bill Clinton saw the problem with this, the free ride needs to stop!
Your generalizations of the libertarians is grainfed propaganda! Do your homework..PLEASE and have some rational examples to show for it!
I am from New Orleans. All I kept hearing is, "This is the biggest dog and pony show." I am not sure what Bachmann meant by bashing Obama and saying, "You survived Katrina"??? First of all Michelle sorry, Barrack Obama,(D), was elected in 2008. Katrina happened in August of 2005, while George W. Bush,(R), was president. However, since you are on the topic of SLOW RESPONSE FROM THE GOVERNMENT, we have over two million people who lived in the New Orleans and surrounding areas, including myself, that can give you graphic details oh how long it took for the GOVERNMENT/FEMA under the GEORGE W. BUSH ADMINISTRATION to respond to us. The destruction of the hurricane was horrendous, but the THREE LEVEES THAT BROKE and FLOODED about FOUR TO FIVE CITIES, which was a direct cause by FAILURE OF MAINTENANCE by the UNITED STATES ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS. Your right at telling us about surviving because THOUSANDS OF DEATHS were due mostly to the flooded waters exceeding over houses. It took MAYOR NAGAN screaming at the government to get HELP, of course you will never hear about the OTHER MAYORS of the surrounding, overly, flooded cities getting critized in the media because they of their BUSH support. Bachmann, do some research first.
And you were not even the hardest hit, and Mayor Nagan left you in time of need, your state Governor semi blocked the Feds from coming in, and you want to blame it all on the feds? You have a little bit of strength in your argument, but, your State Government was your biggest hurdle. Maddow, this is an old story, your state government was found to be the biggest culprit, put the blame where it is due.
Your right also, I should have included the state government's follies during Katrina too. However, Nagan will be on the Daily Show this monday to discuss his new book about what really happened during Katrina, so some political figures are going to get their dirty laundry hung out to dry. Also, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers admitted there faulty levee designs.
The levees where faulty when they were built, the ACE has already acknowledged this, they have way before this even happened. Nagan is going public to protect his own being, which won't work with most Americans, at least I hope they don't believe his lies, he is square in the middle of the blame, no tv interview can clear him, he abandoned NO when they needed him the most, his point is moot.
I missed that somehow I guess, she was actually trying to lay blame on Obama for Katrina ?
That in itself is almost too funny to be beyond belief, it just seems to me half the people running for office are so out of touch with reality as to belong in an old twilight zone episode :P
"Imagine if you will, a politician with a third grade mentality...."
I had read it was more failure on the Corps of Engineers design than maintenance, I've just visited there myself and have seen the huge pumps that were in place, but that is a moot point I guess. Of course the maintenance was probably not what it was originally meant to be on a schedule, if things aren't going wrong over a long period of time people thend to let them slide in the name of saving money to begin with, ya know.
I remember driving out of the French Quarter for a tour of the town and looking at those levees though at the time and seeing them as high as the second stories on most building in the area, and being from Tampa and familiar with hurricanes even then thinking what could happen. Sorry maybe I mentally hexed you guys at the time :(
I love the city myself, planning on going back in the future and seeing how things have come along, I donated some to the recovery at the time.
I loved Tujacks I think the restaurant was called and hope a lot of em still up.
Stop trying to put more people on the unforgiving welfare line, even Bill Clinton saw the problem with this, the free ride needs to stop!
Don't you think having Jobs in the United States would help out a lot with the welfare status
Yep, I do...........................................the government is holding this market back. Government belongs no where in economics, the system doesn't understand it.
Hahahahaha......Paul’s ardent followers packed the ballroom here before, during, and just after his speech, but they were barely seen listening to other speeches. They have organized to win straw polls at many other conservative events as well.....
Well You Knew the MSNBC Talking Heads Weren't Going To Honest about the Truth.... Didin't You?
Dr Ron Paul Has Won Every Poll and Debate since 2010....but it's simply his evil ardent followers doing it all!
Nonsense and even MSNBC knows it but THEM & THEM still have to put on THEMS Bosses Evil Spin on it!
drawing big boos and some quieter chants of "Ron Paul."
Well Big Boo's is what MSNBC needs for yet another "Hachet Job" designed to Disenfranchise Millions Of American Voters by THEM & THEM = THEMS Corporate Oligarchs and their Talking Head Minions!
2012 All US Needs Is YOU and Word Of Mouth......
Every Saturday....It's Our Day Of Rage....Coming To Every Couthouse In America..... So Spread The Word!
Yeah, I've noticed MSNBC putting in straight out lies in some of their stories and at other times rather nonfactual statements.
Pneuma
MSNBC is just about the same as the rest of Corporate Media and push their Bosses Agenda.....or Not as was Proven when they Fired Keith. I almost jumped ship then but MSNBC and I go back to their beginnings and it is kind of personal!
As I have said before if you want to know the Truth Google is almost your friend.
Pick any 6...3 Pro...3 Con...3 Foreign...3 Domestic and Read Preferably or Watch if Needed then make up your own mind!
I have said that same bit of advise to many of my friends and I know they have repeated it to their kids so it seems to work.
It also seems like an honest way to me and not even all the Talking Heads believe all that they spout....they just want to keep their jobs too!
Yeah, Fox News is totally honest! Glenn Beck tells the truth all of the time...Armagedden is coming! (Hints Sarcasm)
Now now Maddow inspires please do not insult THEMS Other Brother Daryl....For Your Daryl won't like it!
It's called Controlled Oposition.........ed Ed ain't much better than Glenn...so far barley but..........
BTW who got Rachaelher job? Is he still with MSNBC? So how do YOU feel about that?
Hmmm doesn't sound very Inspiring to me!!!
Seriously folks.....what inspires me is Vote For Ron Paul & Ralph Nader in 2012 and a return to the Fairness Doctrine!
Word Of Word...YOU...US...it's all America needs!
Yep, I don't like Fox either. Really I don't like any mainstream media because, as was previously stated, they all do it. And on a side note Glenn Beck is crazy.
Mux Rachel Maddow works for MSNBC, this news website to be exact. (Just look at the top of this website for some research on her. I only watch Rachel on MSNBC, then the Daily Show and Colbert on comedy central. The rest of the time I read and do research. However, I am still trying to understand what your were trying to WRITE for the rest of your comment...nah, still can't try fugure out if you forgot to put some words during a sentence or this is how you communicate to others:(
Let the trolling begin. I knew as soon as Ron Pauls name was mentioned the big government Neo-Con Republicans and Liberals would show up. You have to give Ron Paul credit, no one was listening to him in 2008, but everyone is listening to him now. And on top of that, whether some people want to admit it or not he has one hell of chance of winning.
Amen to that!! GO RON PAUL!!
Your screen name in it's own right looks like you're a troll is all I have to say on that subject. I guess unless you mean you're one rather than others doing it.
It's a nice show I guess, doesn't mean much at the moment other than to show how bad the GOP candidates look in reality I guess.
I'd go Ron Paul over any of the others any day, but won't go any of em in the long run I imagine.
It really doesn't matter who Obama's oponent is. It could be Satan himself (at least he has management experience), I'll vote for them anyway.
This "Purity Test" on the Repukes part is PRICELESS !!! It INSURES their candidate WILL NOT BE ELECTABLE !!! Sayonara, Repukes !!! Your Party is headed into the Political Wilderness !!! (Probably for another 40 Years !!!) Good Riddance, and don't let the door hit your Butt on the way out !!!
Lets look at the last four Democrap presidents.
Lydonn Johnson - Vietdumb war, killed the last good Democrap Prez JFK
Jimmy Carter - do I need to say anything more
Bill Clinton - Did absolutly nothing, Monica
Barrack Obama - Socialist Pig
Time for the democraps to go bye-bye
David are yoou proud of the job Nixon, Reagan, Bush and Bush Jr. did? If you are tell me some of the things that they left in their legacy.
Say what you want about President Carter but after he left office how many lives has he changed for the better and how many homes has he built and will continue after he is gone through Habitat for Humanity? On the other hand Bush Sr. is in charge of the largest arms supplier (Carlyle Group) that profits off of death.
Really, Jim, really?!!!! Think about what you just wrote, we're done wasting money on the left's programs that don't work, being from MA you should recognize that, with a broke healthcare system sucking the dollars out of everyone. Ideology doesn't work, it's all political conjecture, and promises of things that hurt more than the help. I want to think that politics in general are under the gun, especially liberal politics, they have brought us to where we are currently.................................and you think they work, wow, what a massive brain fart.
The only thing Nixon did wrong was, Watergate, he won the election overwhelmingly anyway. Signed the treaty with China and got us out of vietnam.
Reagan will go down as one of the greatest presidents of all time, the fall of the USSR. And by the way the way the good economy that Clinton seems to get credit for.
Bush Sr. won a war that had an objective and he stuck to the objective even though everyone wanted Saddam taken out.
Bush Jr. all I can say about him is that he's not obama.
But you did miss one Gerald Ford, I didnt like him to much.
As far as Jimmy Carter he is probably the worst president of all time, but he has been a great humanitarian, And I'll say this about Clinton, he has to be one of the best speakers
David that was a really amazing post, keep up the comedy : )
The only thing Nixon did that was wrong was "Watergate" Dumb ass, he usurp the spirit and letter of the law by by violating that which he was to protect. Invasion of Cambodia, "hit lists" of his enemies including MLK. Worst president of all time: HOOVER, who do you think created the first depression, another republican. Your spin doesn't spin very fast.
Not really crazy about Romney but it is good to know that he is in opposition to defunding veteran's hospitals and clinics while most of the other candidates are for it. What a huge Kick in the head for the veterans who have served so honorably in Iran, Afghanistan, etc. I guess the other candidates just don't like veterans.
Michele Bachmann 2012!
Going to love to see Obama back in Chicago! Better watch out for sting operation in 2013...
Big Paul, bachmann with her stupidity-no way.
