Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has had a rough past month since announcing his presidential bid.
And the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll shows just how rough it's been. Forty-eight percent have a negative opinion of Gingrich -- an all-time high in the poll, even higher than it was during the Lewinsky scandal and Bill Clinton's impeachment when Gingrich was speaker.
By comparison, just 16 percent have a favorable opinion of the presidential hopeful, which is down eight points since April.
Peter D. Hart, who conducted the survey with Republican pollster Bill McInturff, says the numbers demonstrated Gingrich's "total and complete implosion."
"His numbers have just dropped," Hart adds.
The shift among Republicans is especially striking. In April, Gingrich's favorable/unfavorable rating with all Republicans surveyed in the poll was 46 percent - 11 percent. Now, it's 28 percent - 33 percent.
And among Republican primary voters, it went from 50 percent - 13 percent. to 32 percent - 34 percent.
"That's a fairly decided switch, even from Republicans," McInturff says.
Since Gingrich officially announced his presidential bid last month, he retreated in his opposition to the GOP plans to overhaul Medicare. It was revealed that he once owed as much as $500,000 to Tiffany's. A protestor dumped glitter on him, while an Iowa Republican told him to get out of the race. And on top of it all, soon after he returned from a cruise to the Greek isles, most of his top aides resigned from the campaign.
The entire NBC/WSJ poll -- which was conducted June 9-13 of 1,000 adults (200 reached by cell phone), and which has an overall margin of error of plus-minus 3.1 percentage points -- will be released beginning at 6:30 pm ET.

Newt has set such wonderful examples as a leader!! Right....Go write another book!
No candidate who intends to run for President can clear the US of the financial mess it is in during any "one" term...Obama never stood a chance, look at the numbers of the deficit when he went into office. He has been fighting a battle with no bullets! The next President will struggle as well. It will take years for this country to recover. Either party,R or D,does not matter. The problems are too monumental. Newt has his own agenda....not going to happen! He needs to retire.......great pension, too!
The Federal government does need to step back and take a good hard look at the expense they are creating for the tax payers. For one thing, what other business offers retirement at 80% pay?I just read where Veteran Judge Dorothy Nelson is still working....after she retired, making$184,500. She is working to offset burgeoning caseloads and unfilled judgeships. Are you kidding me???? Am I the only one who sees this fleecing? This is ridiculous~she is 82 years old! How much money does she need at that age? I think one could do alright with that amount at 82!! Why don't we hire new judges ? We can put the blame on the Federal Government as well as any political figure~the whole system is a mess.........the government appears to be serving themselves and not the citizens of the US. The older I get,the more I understand how this system works and it isn't for the poor slobs like me!
Gingrich deserves something a little stronger than unfavorable, perhaps visceral loathing. Yeah, I think that's about right.
Newt has always known (at least) half the people hate him. It hasn't stopped him yet. i think he enjoys it.
Just 48%? What is wrong with 52% of Americans? Or are most of them so uninformed that when asked "What's your opinion of Newt Gingrich?" they just responded "Who's that?" Such ignorance must be bliss indeed.
Turn out the lights the partys overrrrrr.
Now he comes out and blasts the media and former associates for his failings. Everyone's lying, everyone's making things up, telling half truths, according to Newt. Try looking in the mirror, Newt. Then again, you probably can't even look YOURSELF in the eye. I'd vote for Nixon before I ever cast a vote for you.
racist bigot
getting his just deserts
there's still time to leave Dodge before the gunfight Newt...which would be a prudent move...considering...
poor newt :( he should sue whoever told him to run and that he has a chance in hell. he wasted a lot time and other peoples money on a run to nowhere.
Maybe he won't be going to the W.H., but if he debated the stupid jig currently in the W.H., Newt would blow him completely out of the water. There would be NOOOO contest. The man IS brilliant, and I believe he could get this counrty on the right track, which is desperately needed before it's too late.
REPUBLICANS 2012!

Just another piece of crap floating away.
what else would you expect ??? old "porky pig" is an arrogant little jerk and everyone knows it !!!
He should have QUIT long ago or better yet,not even entered the race. He has nothing to offer this country as far as leadership. He's been censured before so why is he even being considered or why does he think he deserves a chance. Even Sarah Palin would be a better choice and she isn't a choice at all. GET OUT NOW Newter AND STOP MAKING A PALIN OUT OF YOURSELF................
Newtron had a Contract with America that had he executed would have done much good. Instead he began throwing hatchets across the aisle and started the venomous culture that permeates Washington today. He is plenty smart but his arrogance ruins his game.
