Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has had a rough past month since announcing his presidential bid.
And the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll shows just how rough it's been. Forty-eight percent have a negative opinion of Gingrich -- an all-time high in the poll, even higher than it was during the Lewinsky scandal and Bill Clinton's impeachment when Gingrich was speaker.
By comparison, just 16 percent have a favorable opinion of the presidential hopeful, which is down eight points since April.
Peter D. Hart, who conducted the survey with Republican pollster Bill McInturff, says the numbers demonstrated Gingrich's "total and complete implosion."
"His numbers have just dropped," Hart adds.
The shift among Republicans is especially striking. In April, Gingrich's favorable/unfavorable rating with all Republicans surveyed in the poll was 46 percent - 11 percent. Now, it's 28 percent - 33 percent.
And among Republican primary voters, it went from 50 percent - 13 percent. to 32 percent - 34 percent.
"That's a fairly decided switch, even from Republicans," McInturff says.
Since Gingrich officially announced his presidential bid last month, he retreated in his opposition to the GOP plans to overhaul Medicare. It was revealed that he once owed as much as $500,000 to Tiffany's. A protestor dumped glitter on him, while an Iowa Republican told him to get out of the race. And on top of it all, soon after he returned from a cruise to the Greek isles, most of his top aides resigned from the campaign.
The entire NBC/WSJ poll -- which was conducted June 9-13 of 1,000 adults (200 reached by cell phone), and which has an overall margin of error of plus-minus 3.1 percentage points -- will be released beginning at 6:30 pm ET.

Newt Gingrich died in 1998. His body just hasn't hit the floor yet.
Newt is toast!
Newt was never a true contender, not even in his own mind. The whole run for president for him is nothing more than an act to promote him, his books, movies and his fake charities. Running for president for too many of these guys is nothing more tha a money maker for them.
Stay ignorant, and keep supporting people like him.
And now....the end is near.....and so we reach....the final curtain....
Newt Gingrich and his third wife represent everything that is wrong with America at the dawn of the early-21st century in the sneaky weaseling self-interest department where all that matters is extracting as much money as possible from the wallets and purses of the common folk while doing nothing of value, for sure . . .
For sure!
According to the article: if you can't dislike Newt, who can you dislike?
If it weren't for Callista, his ratings could even be higher.
Like this is a surprise.... you've got to be kidding me??? Let's start cooking Michele Bachmann!!!! Hey Sarah Palin, keep on collecting $$$$ from those Tea Partiers they haven't figured you out yet!
hey brett, still crying over the event-less email witchhunt? boo hoo hoo. thats ok, perhaps you and your minions can get letterman to make a joke about one of Palins children sleeping with a professional athlete again. that would surely cheer you up.
Article: "Forty-eight percent have a negative opinion of Gingrich -- an all-time high in the poll, even higher than it was during the Lewinsky scandal and Bill Clinton's impeachment when Gingrich was speaker."
The irony is: Clinton had better ratings during the impeachment era (when Newt was multi-tasking by pushing for impeachment while Newt was major-league cavorting) than Newt has now. Uh-oh.
Gingrich's unfavorable rating hits all-time high in NBC/WSJ poll, and CNN just surpassed MSDNC in viewership, further enhancing FOX's galaxylike dominance over both, in their relentless race to the bottom, and eventual bankruptcy
of course this is front page news. he dared to put the moderator in his place at the debates. a greater sin is unknown to liberals than making one of them look silly. same thing happend to bork. just a bunch of witless urbansexuals wagging their finger while secretly terrified.
Nobody is going to work for Newt until he divorces that wife! So, he really isn't a candidate at all.
Now, Michele Bachmann is a real candidate!
As in really wierd!
newt thought no one cared about his 600k spending spree at tiffanies or his taking off on a cruise right after he announced his candidacy. he also forgot that while he was criticizing clinton for his adultery, gingrich was doing the same thing. his hypocrisy knows no bounds. so all his key helpers left, because they figured out he is just too stupid & phony to waste their time on.
This was the same sleazebag who was on the impeachment committee against Bill Clinton while he was having multiple affairs while married. Rather a two faced split tongue on him I think.
This is the same sleazebag who wanted to legislate morality for all of us while cheating on 3 wives and avoiding paying his child support. Remember that "Moral Majority" slogan?
Frankly now that they have indicted John Edwards it is time to go back and indict Gingrich and all those other Republican cheaters and slimeballs..........
Think guys and gals. Why did his numbers fall?
Could it be the family-values cheating hypocrit syndrom struck a blow? Or how about the self-interested selling of his books to his campaign committee? Or could it be that the "Contract With America" was proven to be best only for the well-heeled? It couldn't be Iran-Contra finally caught up with him, could it?
Or did America finally wake up to what this man really is?
LL
As I predicted a long time ago this loser is done. Now he can just go away, preferable to another country!
On NASA, Newt loves space travel because it's dark as night and really exciting. On the wifely issues, perhaps his appeal is the way he whispers:
"I like the nightlife, Baby! Let's Go!"
The Cars, "Let's Go!" (excerpt) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnPb3jK7Q6M&feature=related
Newt should listen to reason and stop. But with reason, he's inexperienced.
I'm only surprised that Newt's negative rating is only 48%. I should be 70-80% negative.
Yes, the same as Obama's. So if Gingrich is done at 48% disapproval. Why are you telling us Obama is destined for re-election with the same unfavorable number?
His staff apparently agrees that Gingrich really fulfills the adage,
"You can always tell an assh--e, but you can't tell him much!"
From past performance, I expect Newt will be "undeterred".
Mr. Waddles, aka Newt GingRICH, can still keep the money flowing if he acts right now, and becomes a Jenny Craig spokes person. I think Kirstie Alley has to attend a Scientology Convention so there is an opening, unless Christ Christie, Rush Limbaugh or some other Pac Man GOP Gobbler, beats him to it.
Read the numbers from the last three months, everything is pointing to us going back into recession. You can't deny the numbers no matter what the President says. This is what happen every time you take the Keynsian approach to a recession and throw tax money at it. Then when the government spending runs out. The economy falls back into recession because it was a fraudulent recovery. A recovery not driven by the private sector is not sustainable. Too bad we had to spend a trillion dollars to find that out.
Billions of dollars taken by the plane load over and over to Iraq on pallets to be given out 2004. Alot of it unaccounted for to this day. So we started two wars that were unpaid for by a guy who had trouble putting a sentence together. Then there are the tax cuts to the wealthiest that are unpaid for. Cheney's energy policy drained money from the middle class with the help of Enron who were giving themselves bonuses in 8 digits. Jobs were sent overseas. How can you run a country when you spend 8 years draining the country's treasure? Where's the money? If the banks refuse to give credit to companies, the companies cannot hire new people. Why are we subsidizing oil companies that are making billions in profits every month? Stop blaming Obama for this mess. Republicans went about destroying the engine of America for 8 years and they are still trying to dismantle it by getting rid of teachers and ignoring millions without access to healtcare.
Patricia, the missing billion is just a droplet in comparison to the trillions which have been thrown away in just the last two years. The 8 years of Bush couldn't have been that bad with an average of 6% GDP, 4.5% unemployment , and the largest tax revenues every in 2005 and 2006. If that is ruining our country please give us someone to ruin it. This instead of your savior in Washington who has GDP at 2.3% now, 9.1% unemployment, and the first two years of trillion dollar deficits in history. Maybe we ought to get rid of the teacher unions and their members. I just saw today that only 12% of high school seniors can achieve at 12th grade levels and that doesn't even count those who drop out. But you and your party oppose wanting to change what the unions and Dept of Education are doing. Just don't let complete failure get in the way. I have run and owned manufacturing companies for 30 years and I can't see anything this President has done which will help manufacturing or create jobs in this country. In fact, most of his taxes and thousands of regulations have helped stunt any growth in the manufacturing sector.
From 2007 article in Christian Science Monitor: "In a study last January and updated in October, Harvard Prof. Linda Bilmes and Columbia Prof. Joseph Stiglitz estimated the budgetary and economic cost of the war at $2 trillion."
In statements from the Obama administation, they estimated because of the stimulus that unemployment would not go over 8%....
Stop this nonsense. The Mrs. did nothing wrong from what I read. So what if they have production that they want viewed. There's nothing wrong with producing your own marketing philosophy. And she looks great. It cost alot of time and money to be in the public eye. You people are jaded. I'm a Democrat and I just want to say that the Republicans railroaded this guy cause he's not an evangelical or a tea party fringe guy. Republicans eat their own kind.
Patricia, the real problem Newt has is that he. turned a lot of people off with his past philandering. That may be OK in the Democratic Party with politicians such as Clinton. There are those on the right who believe if you cheat and lie in your personal life, you will do it in your professional life. Forgiving people is one thing, trusting them is another.
Ray, It's never OK to cheat and lie. This guy is attempting to run a campaign and because he doesn't line up with Fox News philosophy of being a good Republican then it's time to eviscerate him on national TV. It's typical. That's all I'm saying. Having spent 50+ years as a female I have a pretty good take on men and their interest in women. You'd think by now men in public life would know better than take risks that hurt their own family but it doesn't take power for a man to do that. It happens everywhere everyday. It's like there's a vacuum in men's souls and hearts. Why is that Ray?
Patricia, then you need to watch Fox more. Gingrich is in very good standing with Fox hosts such as Hannity and O'Reilly. I don't see any breech between Fox and Gingrich. I do not paint with as broad a brush as you. I would say some men but not nearly all of them. It just seem the right is far less forgiving with this type of behavior than the Democrats are. I have been far happier with the Democratic response this time in the Weiner case. Again, I see no reason not to forgive them when asked but that does not mean we should trust them again Why do men do this? God says it is the natural corruption and sin in man's soul. Hence the need for what only God can provide. It is our job to hold these people accountable for their actions and not sweep them under the carpet because we like their politics.
If that doesn't get him to back off and call it a day, nothing will.
