Subscribe to RSSFormer House Speaker Newt Gingrich has had a rough past month since announcing his presidential bid.
And the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll shows just how rough it's been. Forty-eight percent have a negative opinion of Gingrich -- an all-time high in the poll, even higher than it was during the Lewinsky scandal and Bill Clinton's impeachment when Gingrich was speaker.
By comparison, just 16 percent have a favorable opinion of the presidential hopeful, which is down eight points since April.
Peter D. Hart, who conducted the survey with Republican pollster Bill McInturff, says the numbers demonstrated Gingrich's "total and complete implosion."
"His numbers have just dropped," Hart adds.
The shift among Republicans is especially striking. In April, Gingrich's favorable/unfavorable rating with all Republicans surveyed in the poll was 46 percent - 11 percent. Now, it's 28 percent - 33 percent.
And among Republican primary voters, it went from 50 percent - 13 percent. to 32 percent - 34 percent.
"That's a fairly decided switch, even from Republicans," McInturff says.
Since Gingrich officially announced his presidential bid last month, he retreated in his opposition to the GOP plans to overhaul Medicare. It was revealed that he once owed as much as $500,000 to Tiffany's. A protestor dumped glitter on him, while an Iowa Republican told him to get out of the race. And on top of it all, soon after he returned from a cruise to the Greek isles, most of his top aides resigned from the campaign.
The entire NBC/WSJ poll -- which was conducted June 9-13 of 1,000 adults (200 reached by cell phone), and which has an overall margin of error of plus-minus 3.1 percentage points -- will be released beginning at 6:30 pm ET.

The entire campaign has been one big ego-stroking publicity stunt. The purpose? To drive dales of his books, television productions, and a forthcoming documentary series.
On the day he announced, his daughter was in Florida visiting a Tampa company to get tips on how to make better deals for documentaries, and how best to market them. She also wanted to tie their book publishing operation in on the deal.
Gingrich is a complete opportunist who is passionately self-interested. As they say, "You can fool some of the people all the time ....."

Mr. Gingrich's Presidential ambitions were ended the minute he decided to cheat on his first wife while she was recovering from major surgery.
Gee, if Gingrich keeps up his unfavorable ratings will approach those of Obama.
Ray: News flash Ray. President Obama's ratings for his performance, in office may be anemic, at the moment but, his personal ratings are high. People like him! He is kind, a good husband, father, and he is a good man. He is capable of making intelligent decisions and he has worked, for every honor he has be gotten in life.
Looking at the Republican crop of toad stools, makes one wonder, why the United States is holding an election in 2012. Bachman should consider taking off the tin foil hat. Pawlety could stand a backbone. Romney needs an injection of personality. Paul has some potential by I am not sure for what. Newt is a moot point. Nixon is dead, which makes him as qualified as the rest of the pack. Quite frankly, I cannot remember their names, that is how exciting they are combines!
You can say all you want about President Obama but I for one, think he will be re-elected. He will put the United States in the positive column. Jobs will be created, the wars will end, Wall Street and the Banks will pay back the money they owe us and if Bush's tax cuts are repealed, it will cost me about ten bucks. Hopefully, it will cost the wealthy millions!
Now, if you will excuse me, I need some caffeine. Writing about Republicans makes me so sleepy. Too bad they can't bottle that lethargy, they would be millionaires. Oh, they all ready are!
Yeah, and pigs will fly. The past 3 years have shown the only difference between Obama and the Republicans is rhetoric. The economy continues to tank, not only do the wars continue but Obama's got us into a 3rd one, healthcare "reform" turned out to be an insurance company boondoggle, not the single-payer system we really need and the rich still benefit from Bush's tax cuts while the rest of us are going to hell in a bucket. We need a real progressive like Bernie Sanders or Dennis Kucinich but airborne bacon is more likely.
Of course, the Republicans are even worse but I imagine I'll vote Green or Socialist in 2012 rather than for the Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum the 2 branches of the Property Party will offer us.

The RePOOPlicans have got a real problem, Their lies have mostly to do with policy positions such as, lowering taxes on the rich will create jobs, that economic benefit trickles down from the high rollers to even the lowest broom pusher, the naive myth that corporations have the public good in mind and will act responsibly for our benefit on their own without regulation, that lower taxes will lead to more jobs and economic recovery, that the government itself is bad and evil by definition, the lie that all liberals are blood suckers on welfare, that all unwed mothers deserve to be punished and forced to give birth to unwamted and unintended babies.
The absurd positions ensue from the lies and misinformation like water from a well, i.e., States should be given Unemployment funds to solve their own fiscal crisis instead of being used as intended for the unemployed as a safety net, that the richest 2% should be given even more tax relief while middle class tax payers should foot the cost of protecting their world wide business interests, that social security should be privatized to provide Wall Street with more funds to gamble with, as if they needed that, that healthcare cost control should be turned over to huge insurance entities leaving the individual in the untenable and absurd position of having to boycott their own healthcare.
The list is endless, the absurdities beyond belief. The lies never end.
And now the RePOOPlicans cannot find a viable presidential canidate, and no wonder, what Statesman could embrace all these lies, support all these absurdities. Obviously, NONE!
It's pretty hard to call Obama an elitist when you run up a half million dollar tab at Tiffany's and take your vacation on a private yacht around the Greek Aisles. You can't portray yourself as "everyman" after that. Add to that his family values baggage and Ethics Committee fine of $300,000 and is there any wonder he can't get any traction with the voters.
It's easy to call Obama an elitist because he is one. It's hard to be taken seriously when you say it if you run up the half million dollar tab, etc. But I haven't done that, so here goes: President Obama is an elitist.

Huntsman might not be a bad choice. But I'm not sure we've seen the 2012 President yet. It's a shame we have to waste another year and 1/2. Obama would have surley been flushed along with the group of Democrats in 2010.

I'd consider voting for Huntsman. But before I did, he'd have to tell the religious right to take a hike, and he'd have to make it clear that there needs to be spending reductions AND revenue increases BOTH. If he can do that, I'll consider him.

There are ways to balance the budget and lower our debt without eliminating government, Republican Pres. Ike Eisenhower was able to do it, why can't the Republicans do the same as he did?
Obama pulled the US out of the economic ditch !! Just when did that happen. The lowest GDP of the last four years was 1.8%. We are considered to be in recession when below 2%. We are considered in a growth economy when we raise above 4%. We haven't been above 3.4% since the Bush Administration. Where are we now. The last three months we have been around 2.3%. Dangerously close to dropping into a double dip recession. If he got us out of the ditch, don't look now but three tires are back in the ditch and we headed back.

Unemployment is going up after two years, still, the under employed is even worse from when he took office, we are in a major recession because of food and gas prices, we have tripled our debt in the last two years alone, taxes are going up, illegals have over run our country, the president is purposely keeping gas prices high and not drilling to justifying making green energy an alternative, and by the way its to expensive and guess what when we have to pay higher prices for green energy all these hybrids will become even more expensive then they are now, our home prices still haven't bottom out nor can we get business loans, how many of us have to lose our homes before this is over,if Obama care is so great why is he making exceptions to the unions and some big business, he has sold out Israel, he is yet to pass legislation from sending our jobs over seas (quit giving these companies tax breaks) and the president has saved us? Id like to see what happens if he wasn't saving us. Your not a Democrat or a Republican your an American. Look past your party lines and look more objectively before its to late. You ll lose another 120 seats in Washington.
Unemployment continues due to the recession which began under Bush and unemployment is always the last problem to recover;
The "major recession" began under Bush but has been improving since Obama; banks and corporations are flush with cash and the markets have returned to pre-recession levels;
the debt hasn't even doubled since 2008; taxes have remained at Bush levels except for a rate decrease provided by Obama to middle income earners;
illegal immigration has been decreasing since 2007; the US doesn't have the jobs for illegals and they know it;
the president doesn't control gas prices; we have a free market economy and prices are determined by supply and demand. the US has plenty of supply but the oil corporations won't reduce prices but still want government subsidies;
green energy and hybrids are an investment for the future; would you deny college for your children because it is expensive?
you want a business loan, then asl a bank; banks are overflowing with money.
Obama hasn't sold out to Israel; in fact Netanahyu is PO's at Obama;
corporations send jobs overseas to make a greater profit; ask themn to keep the jobs at home.

Newt's wife is trying to show she has class. She is known as the other woman when Newt was working late because he loves his country so much. She is trying to show she is not a bimbo. They don't realize they are not respected and he should find a real job. Newt knows he won't be hired because he lacks values, integrity....... I wish he would go away.
I figured Newt's approval rating would have been a negative 80%, not 48%. Did these people call Dick Cheney's house 10 times?

I graduated from college in '89 and I know several "used to be Repubs." that have never forgiven "brother Newt for his Contract with America."

We should stop falling into the traps the media sets for us just to keep us from the real issues. As long as we're arguing amongst ourselves, they can continue their circus in Washington. Real issues: Economy, National Security and Israel. We should stop the R and the D arguments and focus on making decisions that will turn this country back to what it was founded on....the ideas put forth in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States. I don't know about the rest of you but I treasure my right to be free and I'm sick of the government getting in the way....telling me I can't eat this, I can't do that, I have to do this but I can't do that. If I want to eat a Big Mac and fries every day.....that's my business! These clowns in Washington are so self absorbed that they don't see they are throwing our country away....everything that our men and woman have worked for and died for.......just throwing it away or giving it away. Bring our men and women of the armed forces home! stop giving our tax dollars to other countries! especially anti-American countries. Who gave these politicians in Washington the right to do as they please without representing the citizens of the United States of America? We did! We fell asleep...got lazy. But now we're waking up and it's time to hold the clowns in Washington accountable. There are no gray areas any more....if they are or have been unethical, immoral, unresponsible.....they have to go! Do we want to wait until we no longer have a voice AT ALL? until we can no longer attend the church of our choice? or it's illegal to own a Bible? What about all the violence in our society? is that OK when people stand around and watch others beat someone to death? As a society are we all cowards now? Violence is not the answer. But neither is doing nothing. If we look the other way when someone is being beaten down, or when a politician is caught in unethical behavior and we shrug it off and re-elect him/her, or we try to justify our immoral or unethical actions by pointing to another....we are just as guilty. Politicians are not soley to blame, neither is Bush or Obama......we as a society are to blame. Don't our elected officials represent us? so aren't we the clowns for putting unethical and immoral people into office and allowing them to propagate? sorry, I realize this is off topic but I had to say it. Manager - Sure it would be great if the members of both parties could sit down and compromise. But that's seems to be the big problem and quite frankly it must be layed at the feet of the Republicans. For the first two years of the current administration the disloyal opposition was stuck on "no". Possibly and hopefully, the two sides will be able to compromise on the raising of the debt ceiling. Will either side be totally happy with the results? Not likely but that's what compromising is all about, give and take on both sides to get something done. The national debt has been growing for quite sometime and can't be fixed overnight. Now to address your paranoia. Have I missed something, who is trying to stop you anyone from attending the church of their choice or owning a bible? Violence has been an ongoing problem that rises and falls like the stock market. Our gun culture mentality is to blame IMHO! I really don't think the vast majority of our citizens would stand idly and do nothing if they were a witness to violence. A few but not most. I'm not sure how we the electorate can determine which candidates will be unethical or immoral until they get into office? Maybe you have that answer?

I did not say anyone was trying to stop me or anyone else from attending church or owning a Bible. My point was this: Are we going to continue to let Washington politicians and special interest groups dictate to us to the point that we no longer have any freedom?
Watch the news, check out the youtube postings, people recording violence instead of helping and bystanders in the video just looking on and sometimes even encouraging the violence.
As for as determining whether a candidate is ethical or moral, the only thing we can do is to look at their record and their actions. Their actions speak louder than their words. And that's no guarantee but for Pete's sake when they prove they are unethical and/or immoral don't re-elect them! We definitely need term limits in Washington.
It's good to see people debating different topics here. debate is essential. What I don't understand is why some get so personal and snarky. it serves no purpose but to further divide and separate and keep us from the issues.
Newt Gingrich has way to much baggage to be President. Or to even be in this field of candidates. His whole staff just resigned. His Non-Profit group just funneled over $200,000.00 for his personal use. The man is nothing but another highly over rated Republican. Who doesn't do as he preaches. A fake that is all he is.

Actually....the whole flock of the presidential Republican hopefuls are losers. If it weren't for disliking and bashing Obama, they'd have nothing to offer the country.
I''m guessing his original plan was to not win the nomination, but to win enough delegates in the primaries that he could have some clout with the eventual candidate and be looking for a spot on the ticket or a cabinet position like Secretary of State if the GOP wins.
I'm also guessing his plan B, which is coming sooner than he probably ever thought it would, is to drop out for family reasons and to stick to writing books and conservative media spots for his income stream.
He's also a "known" contender. His numbers can only continue to go down as more of the unknowns gain any traction.
The last time the country had a balanced budget he was the Speaker of the House. thank God it looks like he cant win or else he might succeed in bringing some kind of fiscal responsibility back. Can't have that.

gglenn, Newt was speaker, not POTUS. Newt isn't running for president, he's just using RNC funds to get attention from the press and for his own personal reasons that will better his own life. Newt's wife let the cat out of the bag when she went to Newt's campaign offices and forced his workers to help her with their REAL project -- making movies -- about Newt!
