“Anti-tax advocate Grover Norquist’s influence over Senate Republicans slipped Tuesday, a development that could have implications for bipartisan budget talks as well as for the future of the party’s orthodoxy,” Roll Call writes, adding, that “the No. 3 Senate GOP leader said Tuesday that eliminating tax breaks might be a legitimate way to solve the nation’s current fiscal crisis. ‘My view is a good way to reduce the debt is to get rid of unwarranted tax breaks,’ GOP Conference Chairman Lamar Alexander (Tenn.) said.”
“More House Democrats urged Rep. Anthony Weiner to quit Tuesday as members of his embattled staff started looking for new jobs, sources said,” The New York Daily News writes.
Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS), ranking Democrat on the House Homeland Security Committee, questioned holding a hearing on the radicalization of American Muslims in prisons. “A briefing maybe; but I’m not certain about having a hearing,” Thompson told The Hill. “A briefing would be good for background purposes, but I’m not chair… I’m not certain if the testimony will reflect any nexus to terrorism in prisons. I’m convinced that there are very bad people in prisons, but in terms of an organized effort, with either domestic or international affiliations, beyond the Aryan Brotherhood and a few more … I don’t see a Muslim or an Islamic conflict in the prison system.”

It is long past time for the "Constitutional loving" Republicans to dump Norquist. I simply do not recall any reference for allegiance to Norquist in the Constitution. He is anti-American, concerned only with self. Those who are afraid of him ought not be, bullies are cowards. Norquist will not be able to withstand a concerted attack on what he claims as his turf. If the Republicans ever hope to be taken seriously, they must, as a group, repudiate Norquist.
The only thing he loves more than himself is Ronald Reagan...keep building those monuments!
"the No. 3 Senate GOP leader said Tuesday that eliminating tax breaks might be a legitimate way to solve the nation's current fiscal crisis. 'My view is a good way to reduce the debt is to get rid of unwarranted tax breaks,' GOP Conference Chairman Lamar Alexander (Tenn.) said."
Great.....go ahead and get it done. those unwanted tax breaks are simply inhumane. a problem identified is a problem solved.
As for Norquist, he is one of the skins republicans must shed to get back to their senses.
Maybe the GOP could show Grover the bathtub! Blub! Blub!
and yet obama has read up on reagan to become more like reagan. Yepper, reagan and clinton both had to work alongside an opposition controlled congress. My biggest disappointment in reagan was that most of the tax cuts he initially made were negated by the tax increases he had to make latter.
Reagans biggest accomplishment was to get Ameriicans to refocus as a nation to move forward and to leave behind the malaise of the 70's.
Da noid, one thing for sure is that we won't be seeing any monuments being built for obama antime soon unless it is for the number of times he has been hitting the campaign trail. Doesn't being potus mean more than just running for re-election.
St. Reagan?
One can hope Nordquist loses even more power over the GOP. For 30 years, Nordquist has ruled conservatives by pushing out the real Eisenhower, Nixon, Ford conservative philosophy of fiscal responsibility (paying for what it necessary) and replacing it with an illogical "starve the beast" approach to government. It is one thing to believe in small government but another to destroy government's ability to be a strong, economic and military power. If all we have is a strong military, there is nothing here to defend. Grover Nordquist's unrealistic and pure ideology is America's greatest enemy.
Along with those idiotic teapugs who have marched in lock step with his edicts. Let's see how long it takes before Alexander and Coburn try to walk back their statements against Norquist.
Interesting comment from "a source" in an AP story I read this morning. The "source" stated that Weiner was not really a legislator, but a mouthpiece for the Democratic party- and, obviously, that is over.
Pretty telling that Pelosi resisted calls to strip Weiner of his committee posts- seems like she wants to call for him to resign, but do nothing to force him out.
I, personally, hope he stays right where he is. He is the poster child for all that ails the democratic party.
What ails the Democratic party is lack of a backbone!
I guess that Vitter is the teapug's poster child then.He actually had sex with hookers and broke federal and state laws. Things that Weiner didn't even come close to doing. Or maybe it's Ensign who forced his best friend's wife who was also an employee to sleep with him then had Tom Coburn to act as his pimp to work out payment.
Who is Grover Norquist? Is he an appointed God of the right wing? Why does all the Republicans?Tea Party people have to make a pledge to him? Doesn't the Bible say do not have false Gods? So tell me what is his hold he has over the right wing.
There's a sucker born every minute and by the looks of it most of them belong to the Tea Party!
Why have the Repubs let this bloated pig dictate their votes and relationships with their constituents in the first place?
Hey, No jo- welcome back. Hope all is well in your world today.
Weiner is NOT the poster child for anything that 'ails' the democratic party. He's a perv, nothing more, nothing less. The only thing that 'ails' the dems is a lack of guts a lot of times.
That explains everything! Tricky Dick and St. Raygun! With mentors like that....
Norquist a Neocon nut job!
Eliminating tax breaks would be an excellent start in reducing government spending. In fact the congress should start immediately rewriting the entire tax code. It amazes me when I hear the politicians, especially the democrats, complain about taxes yet when they had control of both houses and the WH they refused to even consider eliminating any of the tax breaks currently in the tax code.
