First Thoughts: Palin vs. the GOP establishment

New pro-Palin documentary attacks GOP establishment and sees parallels between Reagan in 1976 and Palin now… The movie will have a limited regional release on July 15… 24,000 Palin emails get dumped today… Making sense of Team Newt’s mass exodus… How it’s different from McCain’s in ’07… How it potentially benefits Rick Perry, if he runs… And after the news, Romney announces he won’t compete in Ames straw poll… But Romney sang a different tune about it in ’07… Dems, including Bill Clinton, are furious at Weiner… Rubio’s maiden speech on Tuesday… And Santorum to appear on “Meet the Press” this Sunday.

*** Palin vs. the GOP establishment: Much of the upcoming documentary on Sarah Palin, “The Undefeated,” which First Read screened yesterday, is unsurprising. It portrays her reforms in Alaska as heroic, it paints her as a victim of Hollywood liberals and the media (though not as many shots at the media as we expected), and it elevates her as the leader of the Tea Party movement. In short, Palin supporters will love it; Democrats won’t. But the most striking part of the film is its attack on the Republican establishment. “To hell to the establishment,” says conservative activist Andrew Breitbart near the end of the movie. Then come pictures of Mitch McConnell, John Boehner, and Eric Cantor. Breitbart’s beef with the GOP establishment: It didn’t defend Palin from the attacks she received after the ’08 campaign. “I see eunuchs,” he added in the "CODA" of the nearly two-hour movie. (Yes, he said eunuchs, we'll refrain from the obvious Weiner reference, but we digress…)

*** Tonight I’m going to party like it’s 1976: In fact, the film compares the GOP establishment’s attitude toward Palin to how it received Ronald Reagan’s primary challenge against Gerald Ford in 1976. Conservative filmmaker Stephen K. Bannon, who made “The Undefeated,” said in an interview with reporters after the screening that he believes the Republican Party and conservative movement need another 1976. And: “It’s very important for [Palin’s] voice to be in it.” Indeed, Bannon said that the Palin documentary is “the story of a woman who always goes up against the establishment” -- whether it the Alaska establishment, the Democratic establishment, the media establishment, or the GOP establishment. Of course, the potential implication here is that Tea Party supporters still want a fight -- in 2012 -- against the GOP establishment. Bannon is most animated about starting this fight inside the party. Asked whether he wants Palin to run outside the party in some third-party capacity, he quickly ruled that out. Instead, he reinforced his belief -- says he's channeling talk radio host Mark Levin, who appears in the movie as well -- about this need for the conservative movement to have another 1976 moment.

*** Coming to theaters near you in July-August: According to Bannon, the Palin documentary will have a limited regional release by AMC on July 15. And his hope is that strong ticket sales during the limited release will lead to a larger pick-up across the country throughout July and August. It's in the hands of movie-goers to see what kind of interest the movie sparks before AMC decides on a wider release. Back to the plot of the movie… Perhaps the biggest contradiction in the movie: It hails her bipartisan accomplishments in Alaska (on ethics reform, the budget, and key oil and gas measures), but then transitions to her no-holds-barred rhetoric against Democrats and President Obama. As the Atlantic Monthly's Josh Green recently wrote, "Since 2008, Sarah Palin has influenced her party, and the tenor of its politics, perhaps more than any other Republican, but in a way that is almost the antithesis of what she did in Alaska." The movie plays down significantly that she worked more with Democrats in Alaska than many inside the Republican Party.

*** One giant Friday news dump: Speaking of Palin, NBC’s Michael Isikoff reported on “TODAY” this morning that the state of Alaska today will release more than 24,000 Palin emails from her two years as governor, many of them business she conducted from her personal email accounts. The Anchorage Daily News has more: “The emails were first requested during the 2008 White House race by citizens and news organizations as they vetted a vice presidential nominee whose political experience included less than one term as governor of Alaska and a term as mayor of the small town of Wasilla. The nearly three-year delay has been attributed largely to the sheer volume of the release and the flood of requests.”

*** Newt: All by myself: Yes, we know that John McCain still won the GOP nomination after his own campaign exodus in 2007. But there’s one big difference between McCain’s departures and Newt Gingrich’s yesterday: McCain actually FIRED folks in his high command after finding his campaign running low on money, while Newt’s top staffers QUIT. And they quit because it became clear to them that Gingrich wasn’t willing do the things needed to actually win the GOP nomination. One reported complaint was his recent vacation to the Greek isles. Another, per the New York Times, was the promotion of his documentaries. “During a conference call on Wednesday, top strategists confronted Mr. Gingrich over what they believed was a lack of focus. They demanded that he spend 90 percent of his time in three early-voting states and curtail distractions like screenings of his documentaries.” If top campaign aides are questioning the fire in the belly, what does that tell donors and voters?

*** Gingrich’s discipline and judgment: As we wrote earlier, this Gingrich quote from his “Meet the Press” interview last month sums up the state of Gingrich’s campaign: “I think it's fair to say that I'm going to have -- one of the tests on this campaign trail is going to be whether I have the discipline and the judgment to be president. I think that's a perfectly fair question.”

*** The eyes of the Beltway are upon you: So who benefits from this Gingrich news? As we said yesterday, it’s potentially Rick Perry. Two aides who left the campaign -- campaign manager Rob Johnson and strategist Dave Carney -- have previously worked for Perry. And for many of the same reasons we said to take Michele Bachmann seriously, the same holds true for Perry if he runs. The “Summer of Speculation” will turn to Austin, TX for the next few weeks…

*** Romney says no to the Ames straw poll: Also after the so-called “Newtiny,” Mitt Romney’s campaign announced that the candidate would not be participating in the Ames (IA) straw poll in August, as well as other straw polls in Florida and Michigan. “We respect the straw poll process,” campaign manager Matt Rhoades said in a statement. “In the last presidential campaign we were both strengthened as an organization and learned some important lessons by participating in them. This time we will focus our energies and resources on winning primaries and caucuses.” Of course, critics will point to this as yet another change from Romney 2.0 to Romney 3.0, because Romney’s ’08 campaign cared A LOT about the Ames straw poll.

*** What Romney said about the straw poll in ’07: For instance, he said this on FOX in August ’07, per NBC’s Sarah Blackwill: “[I]f you can't compete in Iowa in August, how are you going to compete in January when the caucuses are held, and how are you going to compete in November of '08?” In 2007, moreover, Romney posted a video on his Web site, titled, “Why the Ames Straw Poll is important.” After he won it, his campaign team sent one of those glowing post-straw poll emails, headlined: “What they’re really saying about Governor Mitt Romney winning Iowa Republican Straw Poll.” And in his speech after his straw-poll victory, he said, “Well, it’s too bad the other guys weren’t competing here; if they thought they’d have been successful, they’d have been here. Their decision not to compete here was not a position based on a position of strength… I’m pleased as punch that I won.” While this will give Romney flip-flop headaches, it seems smart strategically because it keeps Pawlenty -- or anyone else -- from getting a big organizational win from the straw poll. In fact, the decision to skip the straw poll ramps up pressure on Pawlenty to win it.

*** Dems furious at Weiner: While embattled Democratic Congressman Anthony Weiner seems intent about staying in his job -- and he’s been bolstered by a poll showing that a majority of his constituents say he shouldn’t resign -- we can report that Democratic leaders, including former President Bill Clinton, are frustrated and some even furious at him. The reason: He isn’t doing his party any favors by staying in his job. The VERY few folks advising him to stay are the only folks he is listening to. Monday will be intense for him ,because the House is back and the Democratic caucus may speak as a group. By the way, even Mark Foley is saying he should resign.

*** Rubio’s “maiden” speech: After five months in the Senate, GOP Sen. Marco Rubio is set to deliver his first official speech on the Senate floor on Tuesday, NBC’s Libby Leist reports. The Florida senator will be the last of the freshman class to make his/her debut on the floor. He plans to announce the speech today to his supporters via Web video, and he will tell them: "Since our nation's founding, the Senate floor is where our leaders have stood, debated and ultimately made consequential decisions to address the great challenges of their time. Next week, I will have my first chance."

*** Meet’s Sunday lineup: On “Meet the Press” this Sunday, NBC’s David Gregory will interview GOP presidential hopeful Rick Santorum, as well as host a debate between RNC Chairman Reince Priebus and DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz. On the program’s weekly “Press Pass,” Gregory interviewed the New York Times’ David Sanger on Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Countdown to Iowa GOP straw poll: 64 days
Countdown to NV-2 special election: 95 days
Countdown to Election Day 2011: 151 days
Countdown to the Iowa caucuses: 241 days
* Note: When the IA caucuses take place depends on whether other states move up

Ronald Reagan was no Ronald Reagan, either. At least the real one, who raised taxes several times, bore little resemblance to the ultra-conservative mythological Reagan.

It's odd that First Read hasn't commented on the fact Pope Rush Limbaugh the First has excommunicated Mitt Romney from the Holy Corporate Church for his heresy of claiming that global warming was probably sort of kind of real and that CO2 emissions generated by humans sort of kind of might have something to do with it -- maybe.

So, why does First Read think that Romney has any prayer of winning the nomination now? No other GOP politician has survived the wrath of Rush unless they made up for it by making an abject apology for their blasphemous ways and kissing Rush's -- um -- papal ring.

When I heard the soundbite of Pope Rush Limbaugh I "say goodbye to your campaign" I cracked up.

These Republicans are taking this country backwards for sure. Since where does a shock jock tell the politicians what to do? It used to be a time when politicians gave the media talking points.

What American sheep refuse to realize is...it doesn't matter *who* gets "elected" for President. It'll be the same shi*t. Republican, Democrat, conservative, liberal...your only goal is to drive America to her knees.

You deserve to live with the boot of a tyrant on your neck. Fuque you all for killing my country.

Tryant? That's a bit much. Melodrama is counterproductive. Let's start with the basics: Who, in your opinion, would be an ideal candidate and what policies would you like to see enacted?

Sarah Palin and Kate Gosselin are so alike, they may have been separated at birth. They share the media-hungry gene in proportionate measure. Sarah's not presidential material, and she demonstrated that she wasn't even gubernatorial material when she quit mid-stride. Sarah and Kate plus .... how many? Sarah Palin's Alaska? Sarah Palin's Recipe for Grizzly Bear and Poached Salmon? How many more documentaries does she plan for our viewing pleasure?

Let’s see now, …Did Andrew Weiner Actually cheat as one reporter has asked? Well, let’s go to Mr. Webster to find out the definition of that very word "Cheat", "Cheating", "A Cheater",…

1.To deceive by trickery; ANSWER: Yes, Weiner unequivocally did.

2.To swindle; ANSWER: No, Weiner did not.

3.To deprive by trickery; ANSWER: Yes, Weiner unequivocally did.

4.To defraud; ANSWER: Yes, Weiner unequivocally did.

5.To mislead; ANSWER: Yes, Weiner unequivocally did.

6.To fool; ANSWER: Yes, Weiner unequivocally did.

7.To elude; ANSWER: Yes, Weiner unequivocally did.

8.To escape; ANSWER: Yes, Weiner unequivocally did.

9.To act dishonestly; ANSWER: Yes, Weiner unequivocally did.

10.To practice fraud; ANSWER: Yes, Weiner unequivocally did.

11.To violate rules deliberately; ANSWER: Yes, Weiner unequivocally violated Ethics Rules.

12.To be sexually unfaithful: cheat on a spouse. ANSWER: Yes, Weiner unequivocally did.

Well then, there you have it. That clearly settles it. It's 11 Yes's vs. 1 No.

No doubt about it, Andrew Weiner cheated. Andrew Weiner IS a cheater, and Andrew Weiner IS a liar. As such, Andrew Weiner MUST go. His arrogance not to resign further shows how serious these character flaws of his actually are and demonstrates an indirect distain for the institution and people he was elected to represent. The very same institution he swore to the people he would honorably uphold. There is no more honor with Andrew Weiner. Plus, he can no longer be TRUSTED. Period! Just like the tirade he spewed on the floor at Rep. King to gain attention only for himself was way over the top and out of line. This man clearly has deep seeded character flaws and both he and his excess baggage have absolutely no right occupying the seat of the people. Remember, it's NOT Andrew's Weiner's seat. He is there on borrowed time. It's THE SEAT OF THE TAX PAYING CITIZENS! And I for one do not want a lying cheat occupying my seat. Representing my voice in government. Andrew Weiner needs to pack up his ego and go. He needs to go NOW!

        Andrew Weiner IS a liar

Well then, there you have it. That clearly settles it. It's 11 Yes's vs. 1 No.

Andrew Weiner never lied about his stances when it involves the middle and poor working classes. Republicans do!!!

Lost in the media frenzy over Rep. Anthony Weiner is the fact that at the same time he was Tweeting to random women, he was also the driving force behind a push to uncover potentially serious conflicts of interest on the nation's highest court.

That, even though Thomas, unlike Rep. Anthony Weiner, appears to have actually, and flagrantly, and repeatedly, broken the law.

Thomas appears to have "knowingly and willfully" filed falsified Financial Disclosure Forms which withheld disclosure of nearly $700,000 his wife received from the rightwing Heritage Foundation for the better part of the last 20 years. Only once it was pointed out publicly this year did Thomas bother to file "self-initiated amendments" to the forms he had signed just above the legal warning in bold and all caps which reads: "NOTE: ANY INDIVIDUAL WHO KNOWINGLY AND WILLFULLY FALSIFIES OR FAILS TO FILE THIS REPORT MAY BE SUBJECT TO CIVIL AND CRIMINAL SANCTIONS (5 U.S.C. app. § 104)"

While there has been little indication that law enforcement is actually investigating the crimes of the U.S. Supreme Court Justice (which, as we pointed out in January, are punishable by up to $50,000 and/or 1 year in jail for each instance of falsification), last Friday when Thomas' Financial Disclosure Form for 2010 [PDF] was released, the matter appears to have gotten shadier still, leading at least one government watchdog organization to describe what Thomas and his wife Virginia "Ginni" Thomas may be been doing as "Judicial Insider Trading."

Connecting the dots, it would seem the couple made huge profits from Thomas' participation and insider knowledge of last year's Citizens United ruling at the U.S. Supreme Court, as we'll show you below.

Did I mention he supports President Barack Obama unequivocally?

Hey Recovering, I don't live in NY and I am absolutely certain that I have a say in Weiner's escapades... My tax dollars pay his salary just as much as his constituents tax dollars do! And if he used government property (issued cell phone), posed, took the pictures and sent the pictures while on the job then that is also using my tax dollars for fraudulent purposes..

I didn't vote for Obama, does that mean that I have no say in any impeachment proceedings that may (not saying there ever will be) ever be brought against him?

Now let's talk about ole Billy Clinton! How I wish he could run for President again. He brings such comic relief to the country... Telling Oscar Myer that he's hurting the party.. I don't care who you are, that's funny right there!!!!

          #35.5 - Fri Jun 10, 2011 12:19 PM EDT

False analogy, Ellie. Regardless of who you voted for, you are one of the president's constituents. Not the case for of senators from states where you do not reside.

Recovering: Pay no attention to Ellie May. She isn't interested in the welfare of the Republic, or in resolving common problems that face the Republic. She is simply an Obama hater of the first water writing mindless rants, rants that often contradict what she said in earlier rants. The woman would sell out the American Republic and sign a treaty with al quiada to kill Americans to get Obama. She is incapable of an intellectual conversation. So, don't waste your time trying to convince her of anything. She already has the Truth.

The Governor is not running for office - but she is promoting the brand. For that very reason to compare her to RR and his 1976 run is idiotic. If she does trash the GOP, she'll have broken Reagan's 11th Commandment "Thou shalt speak no ill of a fellow Republican". Attack policy, yes. Go in the gutter, no.

Regardless of what you read in the liberal media, it is still mostly true we remain policy-driven and not gutter-driven. I might add that is not the case with Democrats - note how they spoke and wrote of President Bush publically.

Sure, we have disagreements on how best to get to where we all want to go which is prosperity for all. That is true within our party, or whether Democrat or Republican in a general election. But that's what makes this country great.

I really don't get why the media and some people just keep giving Palin so much attention. Her movie is nothing but propaganda, especially with her comparing herself to Reagan. She's no Reagan, given Reagan was not a quitter, for he served two full terms as Cali's governor, while Palin quit half-way in her first term of Alaska, which have a far less population density than Cali during Reagan's time.

She's only doing all this for the money. That's it. If she really was tough and did care for the people, she wouldn't have quit being Alaska's governor.

Regardless of all the perspectives drawn, lies told, deceptions perceived or unperceived, manipulations, denunciations, screw-balls, or what-ever ones opinion is..

The one core fact that is absolutely clear -- is that it was George W. Bush who incompetently presided over this Nation's security when 9-11 hit. That is on record and a FACT, with bush himself clearly stating in august 2001 that his administrations #1 priority was not terrorism, but, instead to spend one trillion dollars on a needless European missile defense system. Think about that. Bush's administration was barely out of the gate, and he had already wildly planning an expenditure beyond the Clinton-era surpluses, during a time of peace and no more Cold War. Terrorism was not even a priority. Incompetence in spades.

It was the bush-cheney led neocon-GOP that first fostered to conspire to lie to go to war with Iraq -- for oil. You either cannot ignore the arrogance and "big-oil opportunism" of the bush-cheney energy policies, or, you realize that bush lied through his teeth to go to war for oil in Iraq. Either way, two trillion was spent on a lie or an illegal plan... and the war is still costing billions to this day..., whic cheny himself touted would be paid for by oil revenues.... sure it was...

It was the bush-cheney neocon-GOP that was in decisively full three-branch power for the first 6 years of the 8 years bush was President, with his last two years, the Democrats in a minor majority in the House of Representatives, and able only to slow the death-like decline of our economy, not stop it.

The unprecedented chaos and disastrous bush administration has almost irreversibility damaged our Nation, our Freedoms (US Constitution) and our economy (and the world economies) far more severely and deeply than any previous time in history, and clealry beyond the comprehension of those who would be stupid enough to support placing corporate owned and manged republicans in the white house, ever again!!!.

Laissez Faire Capitalism failed, and did so, miserably - and that is a plain and simple FACT. But, there is one group of the ultra-wealthiest, who made out BIGTIME, while all others suffered and continue to suffer.

Complete deregulation of economic mainstays (Wall-street, etc), is not only foolish, it is a CRIMINAL ACT and should be point-blank outlawed, in one fell swoop. The only people pressing for this -- and they are also the wealthiest on the Planet, do not have anything other than their own best interests in mind, and they will use their influences, money and power in virtually all aspects of our media to DUPE people into believing otherwise. These are the "Golden Judas Goats"... of the Gestapo On Parade = GOP.

The question is not one that really centers itself around spending limits, taxes or budgets, it is all about honesty, competence, and motive.

When one see the GOP literally catering directly and ONLY to the elite in this Nation, what does that tell you about the GOP"s make-up and motives?

Has the GOP ever in its history tried to fix our healthcare system? Not once has the GOP ever even spoken to fix it. Why? Clearly, the medical care system in our nation has been in shambles throughout the bush years, yet not once were there any proposals to get control of out of control costs. You see, it was the GOP's major constituencies that was and still is making a killing with the status quo -- hence no changes deemed necessary.

So, it actually became easier financially to buy a nice new car than it was to buy health insurance for a young family of three. The GOP was and remains okay with that to this day.

The elitists who own and mange the GOP -- want to"phase out" social security, and medicare, or privatize it.

Why? Well, right off, the wealthiest in our nation obviously do not need either -- they can afford it all for themselves with pocket change. So, in their line of thinking, why should they pay for yours?

If medicare and Social security disappeared -- think it as a huge windfall to corporate pockets, right off -- an immediate 6.2% + 1.45% = 7.65% reduction in taxes (payroll taxes to corporations/employers).

On top pf that "tax relief", the opening of "privatization" schemes by Wall-Streeter types would gouge further profits out of what was intended to be retirement funds.. leaving even less to retirees, overall.

Anything that would be privatized, would be actually costlier and net less for the "tax-payer investor", and likely also carry a risk otf total loss, as well.

All we are witnessing today is a subversive effort of elitists to reduce their present tax obligations, and making for a back-ended windfall mechanism for profiteering further -- masked as a "budget-balancing" effort.

Ya'll have a happy weekend! I'm going to relax by the French Mediterranean... yawn!!!

Sarah Palin is interested in the House of Represenatives, not the Presidency at this time. That is inpart why she chose to move to Arizona. The chances of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords being able to run in 2012 are sadly looking dismal. www.azcentral.com/news/articles/2011/06/09/20110609gabrielle-giffords-health-issues-revealed.html

With McCains help, Sarah feels she can win the U.S. House of Representatives from Arizona's 8th district

The Anchorage Daily News has more: “The emails were first requested during the 2008 White House race by citizens and news organizations as they vetted a vice presidential nominee whose political experience included less than one term as governor of Alaska and a term as mayor of the small town of Wasilla."

Was the even less experienced Democratic presidential nominee in 2008 "vetted" at all by a compliant media? Why is the Washington Post and NY Times gleefully signing up the public to snoop through Governor Palin's 24,000 emails?

Liberal media: by liberals, for liberals...

Pretty well put. The media and the parties are putting up inexperienced candidates because they want it to be a popularity battle, not a battle of concepts and ideas. It's far easier to vilify your opponent than one up them conceptually and actually propose hard solutions to the nations problems.

One or a few word slogans is all the American voters can handle, IE- "Hope" "Change" and "Maverick". They are all evocative, however unless there is anything substantive attached to them we've learned that they are just words. I think we deserve more from both parties or we need replace them with new people and new parties.

                        Radworker,

Nice argument...but around here you will need to back up such claims. But I will stoop to your level...if you like Sarah Palin and want her to become President you truly are an ignorant person.

Can I play too?? VIPP = Vacant Imbecilic Partisan Person?

How about we move beyond the name calling and start looking for solutions? Neither party is good, neither party represents you well. They both are prone to self aggrandizing, overspending, avoiding blame, and can't get a budget proposed let alone think about how to fix it. If you have a job, do you really believe that the government has better ideas on how your money should be spend than you? They raise your taxes to support thier initiatives, so you pay for their play. I for one can't figure out how I'm benefiting from a larger federal government, additional spending, additional printing of our currency, and additional social programs being proposed without a basis for their solvency. I think they both are failing us miserably.

Solutions- Fixing the size of government's spending to current GDP with a cap, reducing the size of the federal government, requiring that the federal government be financially responsible like private companies (no negative balance sheets that are ok), no exceptions for any company with new legislation (no favoritism, I bet that the lobbyists would have a problem with new/unnecessary legislation then), gutting the IRS and setting up a Fair Taxation system, reducing the size of government to what is required by the Constitution, term limits for members of Congress, requiring that all government employees are required to use government programs and required to contribute to their benefits at the same rate as the average of private companies in the US. I can keep going.....

Palin has the same flaw that has brought down so many. She believes that she's never wrong and can't admit so when she is. It's more important for her to be right than to face the facts. Meglomania or just plain stuborness - no matter what the cause it spells nothing but trouble because it indicates a combative, uncompromising, and uninformed position on a variety of issues. That will be nothing but trouble for her. It's Sara Palin against the world. She always plays the victim. It gets tiring and uninteresting after a while. She can barly run herself let alone fix the complex problems our nation faces. She loves the limelight however. Maybe another reality TV show for her?

Why are all the DEMS & LIBBERS talking about Palin and Newt as if they were relevant? Should'nt we be talking about why Obama's approval rating is tanking and why? Isn't that a tad more relevant than Palin and Newt wasting time and money?

Personally, I think palin is an idiot. Actually pretty stupid. But thru all of her continual mistakes about things a presidential and VP candidate should know and things she should know now I've never really questioned anything about her or been too surprised by her failings. But I'm starting to wonder if she is actually starting to believe her own hype. Does she actually think that she could lead this country? Does she not realize that the majority of people in this country would vote against her - not necessarily FOR the other candidate, but AGAINST her?
