With jobs and the economy topping Americans' concerns, President Obama headed to a community college in Northern Virginia to highlight the need to train workers for the manufacturing jobs he believes are key to strengthening the economy.
The president returned to North Virginia Community College to announce several new initiatives that are part of the "Skills for America's Future" program launched last year to focus on workforce training, including plans to help half-a-million community college students get industry-recognized credentials that will helped them get skilled jobs, provide more opportunities for at-risk youth and provide new online tools to connect workers with employers.
The president toured labs at the college's Alexandria campus where students are trained to work on advanced vehicles, before delivering brief remarks.
"Right now there are people across America with talents just waiting to be tapped, sparks waiting to be lit," he said. "Our job is to light them and there's no time to lose when we've got folks looking for work, when we've got companies that need to stay competitive in this 21st Century economy and when we know that we've gotta rebuild the middle class and a lot of that's going to have to do how well we do in manufacturing and how well we do in jobs that are related to making products here in the United States of America."
Obama also pushed Congress to pass -- or reauthorize -- the Workforce Investment Act, a federal job training program.
The U.S. economy added just 54,000 jobs in May, growing at much-slower pace than expected and not nearly quickly enough to put a dent in the unemployment rate, which ticked up to 9.1 percent. The economy is almost certainly going to take center stage in next year's presidential election.
Today's speech was aimed at showing the president is concerned about the issue at the top of voters' minds and is doing everything possible to tackle it. Still, there is not much appetite in Congress for more stimulus and while the president argued manufacturing training programs were necessary to provide companies with the skilled workers they need, employment in that sector actually fell slightly -- by 5,000 jobs -- in May.
Obama held a town hall on the debt and deficit at the community college's Annandale Campus in April.

Now with a GOP House, one-half of Congress, the Lefties expect that House to "Produce jobs",
I'm still waiting for someone, anyone to ask the Weeper of the House where the J O B S he promised!
So far they have laser focused on ANYTHING but job creation! Womens reproductive rights, elimination of Medicare & Medicaid, holding the debt ceiling hostage and the list goes on...
I would sure hate to think we were LIED to! lol
Thanks Feisty,
We need a Congressional plan/bill that will address the loss of two-thirds of the manufacturing jobs in the US over the last 30 years.
Job training? Yep, that's the answer.
Oh wait the answer is it is in China where the manufacturers train on the job.
You talking about lies again Feisty? I thought we were done with Anthony's issues.
Who's UP for another round of Anthony's dick pics, sexting, and other ways to totally piss off you wife?
But do tell us RED - does Obama have no responsibility for jobs? And if so what can he do, other than give pretty speeches?
How about all those dems in congress? Anything. Oh that's right you all have already admitted that they are powerless and can do nothing. It's only the republicans.
Anyone stupid enough to think job-training for people in the hope that the jobs will then magically appear before their very eyes is clueless. This is all Barry buzzwords and noise designed to fool the low information Dem voters into thinking he has even the slightest clue about creating jobs. It's just another govt spending program that will only create more bureaucrat jobs that produce nothing of lasting value.
NO! Thank you Dennis! Good catch (as usual) hope you didn't mind me borrowing it?
Regarding Boehner, appears he's either not up to the job OR he flat out lied...
Either way just goes to show he's a LOSER!
Nasty redhead - So if something a man said doesn't come true immediately he's a loser?
President Obama is a loser then. We know he's a liar but now because of nasty I also know he's a loser. Thanks nasty.
Joe is right. We need jobs, not training. If companies need to hire people they would be willing to train them if they can't find qualified workers. What we really need is for Obama and the left to stop thwarting business. That is the reason why they aren't hiring. Instead they demonize them (and the rich) and then seem clueless when they stop hiring. It's as if they don't understand how our economy works!
It is so obvious. He sounds desperate to me.
Ah yes, a street corner and sign for everyone.
Is this "Field of Dreams" thinking? Train Workers and They (jobs) will come? I think in Ireland right now they have thousands of unemployed but trained workers. Why would the result be any different here? I thought Obama was the 21st century thinker. Why does he keep proposing 20th or 19th century solutions?
This country is exceptional in the area of entrepreneurism. Train people to set up their businesses. Produce a Business Plan, Plan Cash Flow etc. Create new products that lead to manufacturing, it doesn't work the other way around.
We can't compete for manufacturing jobs against low wage countries.
WOW! In your world 6 months is considered immediate! lol
Your side was asking the President the day after he was inaugurated...
He claimed he would create jobs and has done NOTHING to uphold his promise!
You can twist yourself into a pretzel anyway you like, it won't change the FACT! ;o)
All right now.....let's all chant "LET'S BLAME BUSH" just one more time and before it sounds completely ridiculous and totally irrelevant! The American Voters really enjoyed that "cliche" and just before they handed the Democratic Party it's worst "shellacking" in 60+ years and just 7 short months ago on 11/2/10. Not too worry.....the economy has improved so much since then.....there is just no way the American People will remember why they tossed out several busloads of DEMS from Congress to begin with and 11/6/12 isn't until next year!
So lets walk through this a little. Obama premise is that there are jobs available, but we don't have the workforce with the jobs skills to fill those jobs. Okay, so what jobs are those Mr. Obama? You say you're going to initiate programs to support that training, but you never say what training will be given, that's not a minor detail I might add. "Better tools to connect workers to jobs" is nothing more than Monster.com.
Just more flowery rhetoric. Campaigning. Carnival barking. When Obama talks, America hears: "Step right up and win a Kewpie doll!!"
Sure, why not. It's working so well. How many billion will we need to borrow?
LOL @ Feisty!
If six months is enough time for Boehner to start creating jobs then two and half years of continued lost jobs is a perfect reason to throw Obama out on his bum.
Yep.
Spanky-
Job training? Yep, that's the answer.
Touche! can you fin a republican job plan? it has been 154 days and repugs have created not 1 job plan.

Feisty Redhead -
are you being impatient, have you forgotten the Contract TO America:
Get a balanced budget, Enact Tax Reform, End Runaway Government spending, De-fund Repeal and replace the Obamacare, Pass an all of the above energy policy, stop the pork, Permanently repeal all tax hikes and reduce government.
Once all of this is done jobs will be created, 9 or 10 years we will start to get jobs. They may have to actually start working on something and stop stalling...
Seems economic advisers Austan Goolsbee, Christina Romer and Lawrence Summers have all realized they failed, are economic hacks and have gone back to "school" (academia).
Maybe the other hack, Obama, should go back for some training on how to be president ...... maybe even learn what a budget is.
Nah, Obama is too narcissistic and not smart enough to ever realize he doesn't have a clue and has failed.
Job Training? Are you frigging kidding me Mr. President? Do you have any idea of how many professionals and skilled tradesmen are out of a job because of your nitwit fixes? They don't need retrained to work at McDonald's sir. They need the economy to improve to go back to work doing what they do best.
Job training. What a friggin joke. Ya spend six moths training and not get paid so you can flip burgers. Paaaaaaalease.
Goolsbee returned to academia because he would have lost tenure. I guess he wasn't qualified to work outside of a college environment. And it's no small matter to Austan that he left for that job because Obama's gig as President is nearing its end, and it is really hard to find a job these days. Professor Goolsbee is right to secure his place in the academic job market, either that or he'd have to get a paper hat and some federally funded training to learn to say "You want fries with that?"
How about making it unattractive for companies to outsource jobs? The Chamber of Commerce spent millions to make sure that the bill to close outsourcing tax loopholes would not come to fruition...and it didn't. The Republicans stood firm on this one. 100% NAY vote by the Republicans!
Private sector increases in jobs for 5 months straight of over 200,000....due to a republican House. He is working to repeal Obamacare, which is a job killer in the private sector. That gave some businesses the confidence to start hiring again.
Obama has had 2 and a half years and you have the nerve to call Boehner a loser?
Repubs did this, Dems did that, who cares? None of them have come up with any solutions to creating jobs. We need to build our way out of this, infrastructure, roads, trains, energy alternatives, and on and on. That costs money, so do away with the wars and the tax cuts that are killing everything. Spend on things that get people to work. The blame game is getting us no where fast. If a Repub. wins next year and they take over everything, do you really think giving more money to them will make them create jobs? We need a Extreme Home Makeover on our foundations of our economy, not Repub and Dem power struggles for the rich. They all make me sick!
You have to remember politician's are concerned about theirself first. They only care about their top dollar made before looking to the people's interest.
A real politician would look at the landscape of America and say "They want new technology let's create it for them. They want new jobs based upon production of new forms of energy sources such as solar power their homes, geo-thermal energy, electric cars that they can plug into their solar powered homes, hyrdogen fuel celled vehicles, bio-dieseal and natural gas operated vehicles, let's build it for them."
The monopolistic mentality of having a few choices does not create a diveresified country. A monopolistic market mentality only creates a dictatorship that can be seen in Saudi Arabia, China, etc. where you have but maybe one or two choices of energy and that's it. The politic's follows such market mentalities and by creating a very diverse market here in the United States the rest of the plant might follow suite.
But the power resides within you America to make these change's. Changes that will create a uniquely diveresed market in America where the politics of monopolies such as Big Oil is then cracked into smaller pieces that will keep a monopolistic mentality of religion and politic's on the fringe and will once again allow American's to ride freely across the country knowing that America is free once again from a monopolistic market.
Civilization cannot simply continue to exist if a singular market mentality is kept in place as it wears the citizen down to nothing more than a mere robot being controlled from point A to Point B.
I would blame the rise in gas prices on the Catholic Church in China. The Chinese Catholic's are spreading jealousy and greed among their people. Jealousy and Greed of wanting to be like America but at the same time wanting America destroyed.
The market manipulator's are raising the gas prices here in America so that the average everday goto work American will be limited in what they can do. The Chinese seldom go anywhere other than a few miles from home. China hates the freedoms that American's have in being able to cross the country in a few days to visit relatives or monuments that they either are not allowed to visit or would take several months to accomplish. So they force the price of gas up here in America to force American's to live a life of limitation's based upon their lifestyle and the Chinese Catholic Church spreading hate and jealousy through their congregation.
The only ones in America who are guaranteed a life lived as a GOD or divine inspiration like is done in North Korea are the super rich who continue to capitilize off of the outsourcing of jobs to China. See the correllation of how China and North Korea are slowly turning America into North Korea/China?
Nasty redhead
It looks like a few people on this blog are concerned about you today. We better check it out.
LEAN FORWARD, this won't hurt a bit.
"After losing 6 million jobs from 1999 to 2009, the manufacturing sector has been one of the few stars of the sluggish recovery. Nearly 1 in 6 jobs that have been created since the beginning of 2010 has been in manufacturing." Bill Saporito-Time Magazine
It seems the president is on top of things.
There are plenty of skilled trades people out there looking for work all ready, the one I just got at 60% of what I was working at a year ago that was outsourced and has taken me a year to find locally.
And this is with 25 years of tool and die experience.
Manufacturing has been moving out of the country a long time now, training people for non existent jobs isn't the answer for this one.
I liked the President's speech and agree with him. While Don was able to find a tool and die job, there IS a some disconnect between curriculums of community colleges and employers.
Many computer consulting companies are paying their employees tens of thousands of dollars bonuses for referring qualified candidates to WORK. They need programmers and analysts. They are paying the big bucks because there are so few qualified candidates. They're importing them from Canada, India, Poland and Romania because there are no Americans.
If I were starting over, I'd probably take on this line of work. They get paid almost as much as associate attorneys in major law firms.
I am a firm believer in continual education for the benefit of one's career.
CNN ran a story this morning about an American manufacturing company that is taking over bowling pin manufacturing. I think they bought a Mexican plant but Americans were actually cheaper. Check out the story, I was half asleep.
And at the Smithsonian, one of the people in charge was a tad ticked off that souvenirs were MADE IN CHINA so he led the effort to have AMERICAN MADE SOUVENIRS sold at the SMITHSONIAN. They are starting out with some special event - again it was the morning and I was asleep.
When I think of manufacturing, I think of cars. Do you realize that southern senators sold out our own car manufacturers by giving tax subsidies to FOREIGNERS to make CARS IN THE UNITED STATES?
BUY AMERICAN. BUY FORD, CHRYSLER OR CHEVROLET AND EAT AN APPLE PIE.
Both parties are guilty of allowing our American jobs to be shipped out of the country! They conferred the MOST FAVORED NATION status on China for years and that allowed American companies to close down and move American jobs to China. The Federal government over regulated, the states over taxed and the Unions did not know how far was too far the average person wanted to earn high wages and buy cheap goods over made over seas and didn't care about the American worker losing their jobs. We are all guilty of hastening the demise of the industrial jobs in the United States of America.
Is anyone so gullible as to believe that there were all these Chinese companies just waiting to send their manufacturing goods to the American market place.
Here the biggest joke about this story, president obumer is now implying that you must go to a junior college in order to get a manufacturing job. If the high schools in this country were doing their job that would not need to be the case. But we just want to keep raising the pay of teachers without any real success at preparing studentsm for the industrial work place.
"Yes we can" continue with the same failed policies. It worked so well with the spendulus lets do it again and again and again.
Karen in los angeles are you crazy, do you see the price of these new ford, chrysler and GM cars they continue to out price themselves.
I love the adds just under $25,000, just under $35,000 and they won't last long enough for you to pay it off, before you have to begin to put tons of more money into them to keep them running.
The bail out should have included a reduction of wages and benefits for all the employees in the auto industry both management and union.
I am a union member so save you critizism, my wages and benefits have been cut over the past 20 years and my pension reduced by the PBGC.
"Obama stresses need for manufacturing job training" - I think Obama could use some job training. Although this is his first real job .... he is ruining this economy. I thought he was the smartest man in the world, and he was going to fix things. Not only has he not fixed it....he doesn't even act like he cares. He is shaping up to be the worst president in history.
Okay liberals - the problem is quite simple really but you live in "bizarro" world meaning real life and economics doesn't matter. Ask yourself - why have so many manufacturing jobs left the U.S.? To answer that question look at it from the business standpoint. You are a business where to stay in the U.S. you MUST work directly with a labor union that inflates market rates, have so many regulation hurdles you MUST have a legal staff larger than your finance department, have environmental issues where it may take the company over a year to approve a new facility and/or expansion, and a federal government (Democrats) that, for years, continues to threaten higher tax rates should they be elected. So the business decides to relocate to another country (or outsource its production) and YOU are surprised? What gets me is your "intelligent" solution: to raise taxes HIGHER on these very companies and wonder WHY they are not hiring or moving production back to the U.S.? You people need to take your head out of the sand.
Our economy is a GLOBAL economy. Our businesses have competition ALL OVER THE WORLD!! It's not like it was in the 70's. New technology allows us to dial a number and have someone in INDIA pick up!! We have electronic communication that allows INSTANT communication anywhere around the world. So what is the incentive to build in the U.S.? Doesn't appear to be one. Maybe JUST MAYBE if we understood the SOLUTION to this economic struggle is to try and INCENTIVIZE companies to WANT TO have their companies work out of the U.S.!!
I'll tell you what the solution is even though you don't want to hear it. The U.S. is bankrupt. For years and years our government has promised everyone "free stuff". Social Security, Medicare, Welfare, Earned Income Tax Credit, Housing Assistance, Food Stamp programs, etc. I am not saying we shouldn't have some basic assistance but when EVERY tax dollar received currently ONLY covers Entitlement Programs and Interest on the Debt then we are broke. Before the FIRST dollar is spent on the presidents salary, national parks, EPA, or (pick your gvmt department or program) we are ALREADY OUT OF MONEY!! Your solution? Increase taxes on the REMAINING companies or individuals who are successful!! What are you sniffing?
Here's what we need to do:
1) Eliminate Capital Gains taxes on corporations for a two year period.
2) Tax amnesty for two years for any company with international branches that want to bring foreign profits back home.
3) Reduce government regulations
4) Convert EVERY state to a "right to work" state. If you don't like what your market wage is then you are welcome to find a job somewhere else that might be willing to pay. Until then, accept the market wage or don't work (which brings me to #5)
5) Restructure Social Security/Medicare for something that is reasonable and affordable. Any other programs (food stamps/welfare/unemployment insurance/etc.) is still in effect but a receiver MUST do community service in exchange for that benefit (i.e. sweep sidewalks in front of city hall, paint fences/buildings covered in graffiti, assist in picking up trash at city parks, etc.). Nothing is free in the country. We help those in need but the receiver should be proud enough to say "thank you" and do what they can to also improve society.
6) Restructure tax codes so you don't need a freakin' CPA to complete a tax form. Simplify, reduce "deductions", and convert to a more "flat tax" program. Determine the tax rates and lock them in for five years (so businesses have some type of CLUE as to what to expect over the next five years).
7) Eliminate the minimum wage laws. We can use taxpayer dollars to subsidize a worker making less than a certain amount a year. I would much rather have a worker make, say, $6 an hour and have the gvmt subsidize another, say, $2 an hour than have to pay a person not working $250/week. Would be much cheaper and can help those who REALLY need it!!
8) Incentivize international companies to open in the U.S. by supplying tax credits and/or locking in a slightly lower corporate rate for a period of time (5 years?) to make opening a factory/production facility in the U.S. more profitable.
This country better wake up QUICKLY!! We are on the edge of a cliff and already have one leg over the edge with a strong breeze coming our way. We are en route to fail and fail quickly if we DON'T CHANGE OUR WASTEFUL AND NON-PRODUCTIVE WAYS!!
Where are the jobs?
That's easy to answer. Since government has increased the cost and regulations to hire more people, the businesses have found out how to thrive without new employees. Business profits are up substantially while more and more people lose their jobs, so why would businesses want to change a winning formula. They should send a 'Thank You' note to Obama for taking away the incentive to hire more workers.
"the unemployment rate, which ticked up to 9.1 percent"
That's a bunch of baloney because of the way the government calculates the figure. In 2007 (when the recession started), the unemployment rate was 4.7% and there were 153.25 million workers, and over the previous 10 years, an average of 1,600,000 net new workers entered the workforce each year, which means that there are now about 159.65 million workers in the labor pool, but only 139.1 million are employed, so the real unemployment rate is close to 13%, based on how it was figured in 2007.
I guess that's some of the "Change we can believe in" that we were promised.
So while Obama is talking about jobs, the teabaggers are talking about:
1) National public Radio
2) Abortion
3) Planned Parenthood
4) Abortion
5) An underwear picture
6) Abortion
Toasty McGrath
When your clueless, what do you do? you mope around.
GOP is not interested in job creation neither in education even though we know they don't have a clue on how to create jobs. With chamber of commerce sworn to take all mfg jobs out of this country.
Their interest lies in stuffing the Koch brother and cronies alike pockets with Benjamins. we know who is fighting to create jobs and it is not the GOP.
The Republicans want a slow economy and high unemployment. They feel it's their ticket to the White House.Sad to say that's that's the mindset of the Republicans wishing for our Country's downfall for politicial gain. It's really Treason but there it is.
Toasty - go ahead and have as many abortions that you want. Just don't make me pay for them.
If a certain democrat was an honest man the underware issue would not be an issue.
Progressive/ liberals are clueless. Do you clowns have any idea how much we spend on job retraining already? The only thing that needs to happen in this country for jobs to come back is get the progressive/liberals out of the way of productive Americans. That task will be completed in the next election.
So, now we're back to this... look up the Hyde Amendment will ya & get back to us!
Federal funds DO NOT PAY for abortions, no matter how many times YOU claim they do!
Guess what, JH. YOU DON'T PAY FOR THEM. But that's not enough for the tea partiers, as they've been actively skirting the constitution to try to come as close to outright banning it as they can sneak past the courts.
No one makes you pay for it now, JH, but my tax dollars DO go to subsidize oil company tax credits and the Chamber of Commerce. Will you agree to stop those subsidies? If not, why not? I'm a taxpayer, too, and I don't like them. Waaaaaaaa
Don't be a selfish, whiny baby. And God forbid that any member of your family is ever so desperate as to seek a back-alley abortion or even worse. In case you didn't know, it happens all the time in the "best" families where religious repression is practiced. I've seen it personally on more than one occasion, with tragic results. How is that any better?
Oh duh, another two I forgot to put on the list:
7) Allowing people on the Terrorist Watch List still be able to buy firearms no-questions-asked
8) Abortion
Debt ceiling
Medicare Reform
FY 2012 Budget
Oil prices
Tax Reform
-----------
Obama certainly does talk about jobs, but by evidence of the rising unemployment rate, it's just all talk.
Debt ceiling - and how they can bring down the economy by not raising it
Medicare Reform - Abolishing the program
Budget - See above
Oil prices - More tax cuts and subsidies for petroleum companies
Tax Reform - More bonus tax cuts for Paris Hilton and the Koch brothers.
ALL job-killing measures. Every single one.
Also, they're talking about abortion.
JoAnnaSmith1
This is what the GOP is "Talking"
Pratt & Whitney is working on a new engine that has better carbon emissions, fuel efficient and reduced noise, so it's a green engine for planes...how cool is that! Pratt is being innovative and creating jobs in the US, they figured out how to lower operating costs and more importantly have started hiring again. It takes companies such as this to start the ball rolling. This will be a giant boost for the local economy and for our country. Finally we have a major product that shows America's fighting spirit. I'm excited!
Toasty,
You are right - we SHOULD be talking about jobs and the economy but I don't know why YOU are upset about that. Obama has done everything WRONG over the last 2+ years adding $5 TRILLION in debt, making more people dependent on government, AND increased unemployment almost 2% since he took office with unemployment NOW over 9% (funny, I remember a "Hopey Changey" Communiter Organizer in Chief promises unemployment would not go over 8% if he was able to spend nearly a trillion dollars on whatever he chose?). I would think the LAST thing Obama and the Democrats would want to talk about is the economy.
Obama and Liberals just don't understand how an economy works. Of course I don't know why that is surprising since you MUST have a private sector market that is running efficiently and Obama and virtually all of his and the Democrat cronies in Washington have NEVER had a job in the private sector? That is like hiring a CFO for a company that has never taken an Accounting or Finance course. How can they run the company if they don't understand how a company works? Same in Washington. How can we expect Obama and the Democrats to run the economy of this great country when they don't even know how an economy works?
Train em
Obama better offer ourses on how to survive unemployment or vote tea party bet most kids elect tea party

Manufacturing (training?). Training for what? Whether it's small business or plant manufacturing...no one, I repeat NO ONE is dares expanding/hiring while this anti-business, anti-free-enterprise socialist is in office.
Might as well set your sights on MacDonald-type jobs for the next 17 months.
Beev-I repeat NO ONE is dares expanding/hiring while this anti-business, anti-free-enterprise socialist is in office
Volkswagon opened a new auto manufacturing plant this year here in Chattanooga, TN. VW will invest millions of dollars and hire thousands of workers. Senator Bob Corker(R-TN) and Senator Lamar Alexander(R-TN) both attended and spoke about the new manufactoring training program at the local community college. I guess everyone, including 2 GOP Senators, would disagree with your comments.
i cant believe gm or ford cant make a better car than a volkswagon.
volkswagon? seriously? you retards are getting beat by volkswagon?
this country will never recover with the bunch of idiots we have now running our corporations.
what manufacturing jobs are they going to train for
I think Obama is expecting China to invade and set up factories... having training may mean that you get to live.
Obama says "train them" but STOPS Boeing from opening manufacturing plants in right to work states?
This communist economy wrecker needs to be IMPEACHED for IMPEDING LAWFUL COMMERCE
Madison, was that another "rectum-derived" statistic?
Firstly, Boeing's desire to move to North Carolina would not create any new net jobs, but merely transfer existing jobs from Washington State and cram down wages for workers. Something REALLY to be encouraged, for sure. Be proud to stand for that.
And secondly, President Obama didn't stop Boeing from opening a manufacturing plant. He merely stopped Boeing from doing so in violation of federal law. Right-to-work doesn't trump the National Labor Relations Act, any more than local gun control laws trump the Second Amendment.
What kind of political system does China have? I believe it is a one-party Communist state, yet their economy seems to be the envy of our own. Are you saying that the "communist economy wrecker" is the US? or the President, taking on China's economy? It makes no sense. Or perhaps you are trying to say that President Obama is a communist. Patently untrue, but if it were, you should cheer because he would make our economy as good as China's. Our country's economy is not doing well because we the people like getting things on the cheap, and have done so for years. Rather than buy a few high-quality items made in the US, people have flocked to cheap imports to buy lots of inexpensive, easily replaced things. Because items are so replaceable, the market for repair personnel has also been driven away. It has nothing to do with the amount of corporate taxes and everything to do with a world market, cheap labor in other places (cheap because the small amount they are paid is huge within their economy).
Obama is MORE COMMUNIST than the Red Chinese THAT'S why the communists call him "OBA MAO"
THAT is why China is outperforming the United States
______________________________________________________________________________________
Red China has not outlawed the Incandescent Light Bulb or granted thousands of Waivers for Obamacare
Anna Molly, Your whole statement is null and void until you can tell us the exact state that Boeing is planning on moving too!!
Kate -- that reminds me, can you remember when Walmart promoted itself by claiming that it sold American-made products? However, after many companies either could not or would not accept the conditions Walmart set, Walmart betrayed them by adopting its current "low prices, Always" mantra, opening the doors to the flood of cheap Asian goods they sell today.
You're absolutely right, of course. Corporatists conditioned the American worker for this through the destruction of private sector unions and the cramdown their wages and benefits so they would be forced to shop at Walmart in order to survive. Then they sold it to the rest of us by making it chic to be cheap. I wonder how many people at my income level can honestly say they don't shop at Walmart. I'll bet it's not many.
To a certain extent, you can also blame NAFTA for this. It worked exactly the opposite from the way it was sold to us.
swampfox6actual,
Fresh and Easy chain is one of them and we have the United Food & Commercial Workers union outside trying to stop people from shopping because its not unionized. Handing out flyers that said Let Your Workers Freely Choose a Union. The workers do not want to be unionized but does that stop these guys.
The union, I suspect, is aware that it is reaching a tipping point when its unionized chains, including Von's, Ralphs, Stater Brothers, and Albertson's, will start closing stores due to low sales. (Albertson's has already closed several stores in the county.) When that starts to happen in earnest, the union will no longer have enough leverage to really demand outrageous pay and benefits, and will have to accept what is offered.
I going where I get the best deals, and usually that's a non union store. Face it, unions always drive up the prices.
Ellie Mae....Boeing just completed a plant in South Carolina that is to employ non-union workers only, the Labor department has filed a suit to block it.
If the focus is to be on good paying manufacturing jobs that have mostly been out-sourced, there needs to be a law that discourages outsourcing of patented, registered American trade mark products which are manufactured abroad and imported to undercut and undermine American made. Such imported American trade mark products should have tariffs which enables made at home products to be competitive in the great American market place
The EPA fails to report that due to flourescent bulb breakage from Japan's earthquake TENS OF THOUSANDS of INFANTS were exposed to toxic levels of mercury. California is a high earthquake risk. NOW will the EPA ban flourescent bulbs in CA? What will they do, burn candles . . . oooops . . . the EPA won't allow that either.
_______________________________________________________________________________________
The progressive democrats through and their wholly owned subisidary the EPA BEAR PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY for DESTROYING US MANUFACTURING. The libs are after farmers now you can't even drink raw milk from your cow and Federal Humane officers will arrest anybody who squirts milk into the mouths of any farm cats looking for a hand out WHY DOES THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT DO THIS? Because hard working citizens don't STOP THEM IN THEIR TRACKS BY voting out all the criminals and DEFUNDING 90 % of the DESTRUCTIVE FEDERAL AGENCIES with their NOSES in EVERYBODY'S BUSINESS
Madison.....Strange as it seems, Environmental extremist and Corporate America have been bed partners in the outsourcing of American manufacturing jobs, although the goals of the two may have been different, the results have been same
Ding Ding!! We have a winner... Ellis knows that Boeing built a plant in South Carolina and not in North Carolina...
LOL,LOL,LOL What manufacturing jobs? and I'm still LOL. This has always been on the job training, this man knows nothing about the real world. LOL and more LOL.
It's been 30 minutes and I'm still laughing. How did this country elect this man who knows nothing about working much less how manufacturing works.
Keep on laughing but it is you who understands and knows nothing.
The training is for those whose manufacturing jobs will never return or whose skills no longer match the needs of the today's business world. They remain good and loyal workers who need modern skills. Remember McCain telling workers their jobs are gone forever--remember our President saying many of those jobs will never return. There are entire manufacturing methods that are obsolete and have been replaced by modern technology, modern and computerized machines and there are many workers who do not have the skills to run the equipment. Apparently, that fact seems to escape the minds of the right whose only answer is to criticize President Obama.
Maybe all the private sector companies that are currently hoarding cash, but not hiring, could let a little of that cash loose to fund this training from which they would benefit when, and if, the economy finally turns around.
Isn't that how it's supposed to work? Why should the public sector pay for that, anyway?
LoL Why am I not holding my breath?
Jody, As a member of a family that runs a manufacturing plant I'm here to tell you that it's still on the job training. When we upgraded to technology our workers were trained on the job. What is learned in a class room does not translate well in the working world and that holds true for all jobs.
A company that manufactures RAILCARS and BARGES in Portland Oregon has an urgent need to hire qualified welders. There is a shortage of such workers in Portland. The company has approached the city requesting help to create a Welder Training Program. The city was not receptive. The company is considering moving to Washington State.
Training of existing employees to operate new technologies being implemented within any given organization usually only holds true for companies that care about their employees (rather than the bottom line) and government agencies (rarely terminate w/o cause or outsource).
The days of apprenticeships or "getting your foot in the door" working in the mailroom are over. Due to the saturated job market, you must have credentials or "training" relevent to the position seeked. A hiring manager may value experience over a degree however HR Directors are not as forgiving. HR feels a degree is standard equipment.
Classroom training can be documented and verified. It may not "translate" as well as Shawn-1387469 or any other hiring manager would like, but its SOMETHING that can help screen through numerous applicants to find the person who will be an asset to the company and work well with the team.
Each day he and his Administration prove over and over exactly how lost, clueless, unprepared, and unaware they really are of life "outside" the classroom.
From now on people lets be sure we do our home work on ALL the candidates, in ALL races, from ALL parties every election. Your families livelyhood and futures depend on it!
if we had an honest media he never would have been in office to begin with........
fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me
All right now.....let's all chant "LET'S BLAME BUSH" just one more time and before it sounds completely ridiculous and totally irrelevant! The American Voters really enjoyed that and just before they handed the Democratic Party it's worst "sheallcking" in 60+years and just 7 short months ago on 11/2/10. Not too worry.....the economy has improved so much since then.....theer is no way the American People will remember whu they tossed out several busloads of DEMS from Congress.
The foodstamp president better be more worried about OPEC. So much for gas prices coming down get your bicycles ready.
No skin off obama though he always wanted higher energy costs - you know save the planet be damned with the people.
Job training? Job training? This from a guy whose only job training is in the area of organizing the disorganized?
Rick in the Forest
"This from a guy whose only job training is in the area of organizing the disorganized" Like the Teapublicants....RIGHT? Bone head.
Pius> Were you referring to yourself or to Obama? Reasonably certain both of you qualify as bone heads but it's not kind to refer to the Community Organizer in Chief as a bone head.
Rick in the Forest
JACK ASS, you look threatened by Obama. But you know what........he is your @!$%#ing president. GO AND DIE. Do you know the worst thing, he's going rule your broke teabagger ass again for another 4 @!$%#ing years.
Guess it took a community organizer to find and kill Osama bin Laden after the the Vietnam era draft dodger gave up on him.
Guess it took a Democrat to swear profusely to make his point. And his point was: "......he is your @!$%#ing president."
Very nice
Wait, I take that back. Upon examination of the rest of Pius's statement: "Do you know the worst thing, he's going rule your broke teabagger ass again for another 4 @!$%#ing years."
Hmmm: The worst thing is to have President Obama be president for 4 more years and I will be broke too.
He sounds like one of those racist, teabag, numb-nut, granny killing, screw everybody all the time for no reason conservatives; or even worse Republicans!
@Pius - I feel your pain. I want to scream STFU to every GOP lemming on this board after the 2010 elections left me exasperated. DEBUNKING misleading claims by right wing nuts is a full time job. They spout off random statements with dubious facts then demand others prove them wrong. Hey JC! STFU! GTFO!
HA HA,
OK adidas, Instead of stating that the current Medicare program will be broke in 7 years, I'll ask a different question:
How do you propose to fund the Medicare program when more people take from it than give to it?
Before you simply answer: "Tax the rich." Please explain how much money you will need to take in by taxing the rich to pay for Medicare in the next 20 years?
Am I missing something? There are already MANY people skilled in manufacturing who CANNOT FIND WORK!!
Does he think putting the focus on "education" just sounds good or something? Who could actually buy what comes out of his mouth any more? UNBELIEVABLE.
starkydoo> Yeah. The many people skilled in manufacturing who cannot find work do not have the official "certificate" that will be given out as a result of the Numbskull in Chief's grand new plan. This has been the problem all along. No darned certificate.........no darned job. Simple. Good grief...........
he's trolling for the younger (18 - 21 year old), lacking life's real working world experience vote..... Motto: get'em before they know better!
Starkydoo
Does he think putting the focus on "education" just sounds good or something?
Training, education, and maybe more teaching jobs for his union friends.
Jobs will fall from the sky when you people get educated enough to look up! You need more education, you hear me? MORE! then a job will jump out from a bush and bite you. Obama; I can see it now, jobs falling from the sky! Oh WAIT!@%$&*T! Those jobs aren't landing in the right place! What, tell those Chinese folks that the U.S. is supposed to get some, and they must share,or,they must share! Now,play nice.
What a "Do nothing President" we are stuck with. No answers, no solutions, just well worn rhetoric.
Please explain exactly what republicans have done the last two years. Explain how cutting taxes and spending at the same time creates jobs. Explain why US owned businesses, who get tax breaks from taxpayers for doing it, have created millions of jobs overseas but not here. Please explain what jobs Boehner and his GOP House have created since taking office in Jan. Please provide the Boehner GOP jobs plan. Oh, that's right--they have actually cost jobs, want to give more tax cuts to the rich and powerful and I doubt that includes Dahly and all the others here who have been drinking the trickle-down kool aid for so many years they don't even realize they've been and continue to be taken to the cleaners in the name of fiscal responsibility and small government. Smart folks, Dahly and his friends; they don't even know they are the losers in the GOP smoke and mirrors game and the richest 2% are laughing all the way to the bank.
you go Jody! 100% agree
Whose a Republican? Blaming others is a sign of inability to solve problems yourself. Mr President?
Dahly.....stick around......you haven't heard anything yet.....
Damn straight, he's an empty suit.
Manufacturing jobs training??? How clueless can a president be? We need manufacturing plants, not training! Employees can get OJT. If Obama wasn't anti-business and offered some incentives perhaps we could revitalize the American manufacturing sector.
Manufacturing jobs training.....what a sad joke this administration is playiing on America.
The sad joke is he just doesn't get it because he has never lived in the real world.
Manufaturing plants open in areas that have a high number of employable folks.
Shawn, this might help you understand the issue:
No you didn't go there, listening to something that comes out of Washington, REALLY! Go read POST #7.4. And as far as John Silva of Wells Fargo goes he knows that no matter how much education you have for a job you still have to be trained by your employer. All companies are different including the banking world which I worked in for 12 years. You might have a degree in banking but you will still undergo their training.
President Obama is right, pro-education to help the economy and employment. The technologies have changed our lives and employments. The transitional change of the future employment needs training to help the workers to have the opportunities to be employed in other sectors, for the technologies have changed the courses of employment markets.
Billie, You have never worked in manufacturing have you? In the world of manufacturing on the job training is the way for every manufacturing plant is different.
But I have worked in manufacturing for many years Shawn - and training shows the employer that you are smart enough to learn THEIR methods - especially if you have earned a certificate as I have.
Bille,
I hate to break it to you, but there are many advanced-skilled workers in manufacturing who can handle "new technologies". They don't have to start at the ground level.
The problem is very simple: THERE ARE NO MANUFACTURING JOBS ----- THOSE WHO ARE ALREADY "EDUCATED", EVEN THOSE WITH ADVANCED SKILLS, CANNOT FIND WORK!
You're obviously grasping & twisting Obama's ridiculous comments to try & make them make sense in an effort to defend him. Focus on your country for a change & admit that something is stupid when it is indeed, stupid
Finally!! JOB TRAINING!! This is the only way folks can be pulled into the middle class! I knew the President would finally come around to this!! COMPANY NEEDS + MATCHING + EMPLOYEE SKILLS = HIGH EMPLOYMENT! Way to go Prez!
Yes Yes Yes. All the companies have want adds out for new employees, but no one has a certificate, so the company goes without hiring the best qualified resource they can find. That is why we have unemployment problems. There are already plenty of jobs to go around. Enough for the whole gang! It's all about a certificate. If they would just get that certificate, everyone will have a job.
ROTFLMAOUIP
Finally!! JOB TRAINING!! This is the only way folks can be pulled into the middle class! I knew the President would finally come around to this!! COMPANY NEEDS + MATCHING + EMPLOYEE SKILLS = HIGH EMPLOYMENT! Way to go Prez!
too bad obama sent the jobs to china
I'm going to jump into the fray here-there is an article in the on-line edition of the Dayton Daily News today that tells of the LACK of available skilled machinists due to baby boomers retiring AND an uptick in manufacturing. In fact the article stated that 2010 was a pretty good year for many business's in that area. A goodly portion of the Dayton area is in-wait for it-John Boehner's district so perhaps he should look at home before he bemoans the lack of jobs?
Also not mentioned in this article - there is a $69 million Caterpillar plant either under construction(aided by former Gov. Strickland of Ohio) or ready to hire.
My 2 cents I guess but is certainly does do the mind good to read news from other parts of the country now & then.
Well, Deb, that certainly helps to understand the issue. Thanks for your input.
Deb,
I grew up in Dayton and am familiar with their industrial history.
Don’t expect those posting negative comments about “training” to have done any research or they would know that manufacturing company executives have been complaining about the lack of training in the people that apply. And don’t expect the naysayers to understand the difference between OJT and JIT, kanban or an N/C operator.
And don't expect that CAT manufacturing plant to hire anyone until they get their Obama certificate.
Deb......very true, with baby boomers like myself retiring there are very few skilled people for manufacturing jobs.......For far too long primary focus has been on higher education white collar, communication and high tech jobs, not on manufacturing of everyday things people and the American infrastructure need
Someone needs to let the President know that if we did manufacture anything in this country, the trade schools, and the manufacturing companies would take care of the training. The manufacturing jobs has left the country. Our economy is based more on the service, and informational industry. Made in America is a vanishing label.
How stupid is that....
Unless you train an American to live on $0.50 per day, we will never compete with the Chinaman!!!
Here's the curriculum for Obama's Job Creation:
1. Learn Chinese
2. Get passport and Visa
3. Spend 15 hrs on flight to Hong Kong
4. Take train to mainland China
5. Get 10 cent / hr. job in Chinese slave labor factory.
6. Sell the crap you made to Wal-Mart USA.
Patton, you left out a step that should be between 5 and 6.
Steal design from American company, copy it, then sell it to WalMart-USA.
Thats probably true but why would they need to steal designs when US corporations are gift wrapping technology to the Chinese. Thats like putting the following sign on your front lawn: "Doors unlocked cash inside." We were just asking for it.
I haven't been on the board much lately but it seems like the board is suddenly under siege from the right. I guess the Koch brothers now have a thriving freelance blogger program! Someone a few comments ago said that this should be reason for voters to vet their choices better, implying that the president is incompetent. I think he/she was implying that we probably should have elected John McCain as president (which gives me immediate shudders)! But I agree with the statement itsself. Given the republicans track record, they should never even sniff the White House again for another 50 years if we had a smart electorate. Yes, we will keep repeating this until it sinks in; the reason we're in this mess is one letter - W! The damage he did to this country will take years and years to undo. If we get another republicant president like Mitt Romney next year, the damage will be near irreversible. You can not sustain a big strong middle class that can sustain a super power economy with republican policies - taxing the poor majority and rewarding the rich minority. It just can't be done. I hope it's not too late when people realize this.
yes if a lib cant preach to his own choir he takes his posts and runs home crying. well that explains the hatred against Fox News; the left cant stand different opinions. and those stupid Koch rants..........comical!!!
Wait a second...
I'm now taking my "Reality" cap off my head and replacing it with my "Hope and Change" cap.
Now I'm with you.
Andy M,
So, in your view, no one can disagree w/Obama unless they're a right-winger or a Koch Brother fan. By the way, where's your concern w/the Obama slush funds, government contracts to Obama/Dem's corporate buddies, some of who took bailout money, unlike Koch Brothers:
CBS News, The Washington Post, GE, NBC, Goldman Sachs, AIG, CitiBank, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Soros, Unions, etc.
Last time I checked, it's Congress who creates the policies & controls spending. Which party controlled the last 4 years?
And, why don't you name those "Bush policies" which caused such destruction. Could it be?:
Financial Deregulation? Oops, can't be that. Zero legislation by Bush/Repubs.
Wars? Oops, surely it can't be that. Obama has us involved in a 3rd.
Spending? LOL .. Oops, it's certainly not that. Democrats/Obama have spent more $ than anyone on planet earth. Ever. And in record time.
one need not imply the President is incompetent; he IS incompetent!!
it's clear many on the left are dinosaurs addicted to the same tired demonizing and talking points; without an original bone in their bodies. at this point in the failing Democrat Administration how does the left find the audacity to try to lecture anybody on economic matters???
who takes obama seriously any longer?
Andy M from Massachusetts. Poor, dumb bast-rd
is Andy a Masswhole?
