Since economics seems to be the topic driving the 2012 Presidential election, how much do we know about the people making economic policy decisions for the various GOP campaigns -- who has signed on for former Speaker Gingrich, for Gov. Pawlenty, for Gov. Romney, for Rep. Bachmann, for Rep. Santorum, for Herman Cain, for Gov. Johnson, for Rep. Paul?
Mark and Domenico: You seem to have a huge network of people you can go to for either comment or background on any number of stories.
Have you seen a difference in the White House at all since Daley became the president's Chief of Staff? Same question pertains to David Plouffe since his arrival to the West Wing, as well as Jay Carney.
Things seem different, but I'm not sure I can pinpoint exactly what it is.
Why show abc poll on romney vs obama but not mention quinnipiac which has a much different outcome in first read. Chuck had the honesty to comment on it on daily rundown
It's important to realize on polls that it's the overall trendlines that matter much more than what happens poll to poll, day to day. And polls change with circumstances. Sometimes there is too much hyperventilating on this poll or that as if they're crystal balls. They should be seen not as crystal balls, but snapshots in time. One poll is not as important as a confluence of them.
Feisty -- Instead of "let them eat cake," now the Republicans embrace "let them eat fake" -- Yep, they are trying to run fake Democrats in Wisconsin. Just when you think they couldn't stoop any lower... (Just a follow-on to your cake crumbs, brought to you by Rachel Maddow.)
Am I the only one to realize that the Republican Party is willing to allow the US to reach the debt limit ceiling without agreeing to any increase so that the following chaos and disruption of credit would create additional problems for the Obama administration? They have done everything else they can to see Obama fail, why not this?
No, you're not the only one to realize it, many of us have posted it in some form or another every day but the media ignores it, treats it as ideological party differences which is far from the truth about what it is.
The GOP has done nothing to help the US since Candidate Obama was elected President, Nov 4, 2008; their decision to not participate in Government is about power, winning and nothing more.
No Robert you are not, every day we have faithful posters here to point that out to anyone paying attention. Please join us in our efforts you will be very welcome.
Since the day President Obama was inaugurated Janueary 20, 2009, when Rush Limbaugh stated on his show, "I want this President to fail" that is what the GOP/TP have been working on. Imagine if you will, how far better our economic problems would be today, if the Republicans and their lobbiests, had said yes, let us to work together for the best interests of our country.
But that has not been the case, in some twisted way, they would rather let the country break, let the President who tries very hard to help, fail, knowing full well that when he fails, it is all gone. Will they then pick up the pieces? I dont believe so, they will let it all rot and keep skimming off the top for themselves, dictating to the rest of us where we should worship, where we are educated, where we should live, where we should work at wages they deem 'plenty' to live on and so it will go on until like other great civilizations we will just be a memory and future generations, will wonder how could this have happened.
Do you want this to happen, I dont, and neither do the other posters who come here in support of the President. So show your support, this is not only about an election, it is about so much more. Please join your voice to others and have your say.
Well let us not forget that while Senator, President Obama voted NOT to increase the debt ceiling. In fact he called it an example of poor leadership. The results had the debt ceiling not been raised then would have been exactly as people are saying it will be now. Reid also voted against raising the debt ceiling and in the last year has been quoted as saying "his votes were purely political" (the video of those quotes were shown on many newstations.) I know those of you that are demonizing Republicans now for that very same stance (increasing the debt ceiling is irresponsible) took the same stance then demonizing both President Obama and Sen Reid.
We can't just keep raising the debt ceiling, cuts have to be made and yes taxes on the wealthy will have to be raised.
No, You're not the only one. They raised the debt ceiling many times under Bush...why all of a sudden is it a major concern? They also weren't too concerned about deficit spending under Bush, but they are now. They try to blame everything that they can get by with on Obama. In the meantime, our people are the ones who are hurt by this gamesmanship. (and then they try to act like THEY are the party of patriotism). It seems to me that they choose Party over Country.
Plus, the GOP tries to start narratives such as "the president can't get re-elected if the unemployment rate is over x%", knowing fully that the president does not have control over issues like this.
Why are they so focused on getting back in power instead of fixing our country's problems?
Dennis, I don't believe that is a position that goes thru confirmation as he didn't when he was appointed to replace Christine Roehmer. Maybe someone can enlighten us.
If there is a confirmation hearing for the position, the President may have to end up doing a recess appt. as there is no way they will approve anyone to help the President and in turn the country.
Why is Obama still worried about other counties money problems, but when it comes to ours, he does not want to talk about it. And the other thing that I noticed about Obama is that he will talk about how good the economy is doing a few weeks before any reports come out. How come he makes it sound so good, and then we find out that it is not? And then why does he keep playing this game with America?
because congress has the power of the purse. you people place too much power with our president. right now, the house is 50-50 -- republicans have the majority in the house of reps, the democrats have the majority in the senate, and there is the president. this is our system of checks and balance.
if you want to wonder where the heck are all the jobs, ask congress! so far, boehnner and co., have tried to dismantle medicare, legislate a woman's womb, throw a monkey wrench in our 14th amendment by trying to repeal DADT, to add insult to injury, they are cutting public programs and giving away money to the the top 4% of the country -- who haven't, by the way, for the last 10 years, reinvested back into our country.
'm tired of getting the shaft for false "christian," family values ideology who rob from the poor and give back to the rich. aren't you all tired of it?

Robert that is an excellent question next to my two questions you have my vote it gets answered.
Boiler Room team, am so curios to know why Wisconsin GOP hope its citizens over sleep on the day of election. what do they hope to achieve if the PEOPLE do not vote? Is it proper for me to say they do not care about the people? I hope I get some answers.
Beverly, Now you know why theGOP wants Kagan!! Stop making things up, stop repeating the union propaganda from Chicago! Yea I know because my son-in-law tells me the same thing that you post! Busted!!!! Shame on you! Unions have their place, but your union wants to run the white house and dose not care about the little people in their organization. Union dues are more important then the little mans grievances???? That is if we are talking about the same Chicago union. So back to Kagan, The man who helped the GOP win big in 2010. Why not just state what Kagan real is? The man who just wants government to run everything!! Your income, your investments, your lifestyle, your job, and your health care!!! Come on Beverly, you know that Kagan wrote the job killing Obama health care plan!! Why does Kagan no longer go out to eat with the rest of us? Nobody would bother him, or even talk to him, now we don't see him anymore, is he to good to go out and eat with the rest of us? Or is he that ashamed of his actions??? Boiler Room That!!!
Nebo, The GOP dose not want to win to the point that the DNC has to move out of Wisconsin, so we are asking a few to sleep in, check the polls around 3 pm. and if they here it is a sure win for the Republicans. Don't waste gas and help save the planet! We are also asking all Democrates to stay home, elections have a very big carbon foot print, and election day is a good way for liberals to show that they really do care about the planet, by just not making any carbon! Thanks to all who are going to save mother earth by not voting. Remeber If you are going to go vote straight ticket GOP, you to can help save the planet by car pooling with another GOPer!!! Please stick to the plan!! Reduce our election carbon footprint. Remember to also thank a liberal who did his part by staying home!
On a more serious note, the last election in Wisconsin had the biggest turn out of any midterm!! And the GOP won big! The union ads and its middle class war is starting to bring back some old union games! Some old hurt feelings, and some new voters who are going to vote GOP for revenge! You think that I'm wrong, just go ask a old "Scab Worker" who was just tyring to feed his family! Ask a hard working Wisconsin teachers, who has a union that keeps them from making more money in the name of fair play to its members!! Ask the Wisconsin high school kids that had to go for extra make up days as their teachers marching in Madison, that was more important then summer vacation! Love that Grandson who posted on facebook, "Take away my summer vacation! Waste my class time on union stuff, I get to vote in 2012, and your union is not going to like me!" Now their is a smart kid, we use to just egg the teachers houses that we did not like! Ask the worker who pays 100.00 or 200.00 or even more then 300.00 a month for their benefits at work, and tell them that the state workers make twice as much as they do, but thinks that it is unfair that we are asking them to pay 30.00 to 50.00 a month for their benefits! Yes as the people look on line and see what some of these state union workers get paid, the more they will come out!! This next election might be the biggest in Wisconsin history! Angry voters to the polls!! So how many non union workers in Wisconsin?? Joke all you want, we got a long time to show more people the real numbers!!! Look it up yourself, http://www.wisconsin.gov/state/core/government.html search State jobs! Great website to get educated!!
actualy, if you check you'll read about voter's experience. many of the republican candidates were not forthcoming about what they were campaigning.
just remember people, they know how to use the buzz words to catch your attention -- oily salesman tactics. it sounds fair for about two seconds, but when you dig deeper, you get a wall or more back-pedaling and massive word-smithing!!!!!
LMAO at your answer swamp -- Soros, really, seriously?! Yeah, right, Soros, who owns his own news outlet in answer to FOX called "Factual News" (not), along with his answer to Dick Armey's organization called "RealFreedomWorks" or answer to Grover Norquist and the organization "Americans for Fair Taxes" (not), and his talk radio show in answer to Limbaugh's called "Progressive Talk Now" (not)...
But your are right that "The Republican Party hasn't done much..." and sure, President Obama has ownership of everything except getting bin Laden, yeah we know.
Jane Gray, so true, the Republican candidates also use the "Sarah Palin Tactic" of appearing only on FOX, along with the "Sharron Angle Tactic" of not talking to the media at all -- run away, Romney, run faster!
Here's another question, now that Pelosi has started an investigation, why are there still so many articles on Weiner, and why so many in comparison to Republicans--Schwarzenegger being the most recent? The double-standard from the holier-than-thou "family values" Republicans is expected, but from MSNBC too?
Come on, let's stay focused on JOBS, the economy, and real issues.
swamp - I have done research on Soros, and even what he did to the British economy doesn't compare to what investment bankers on Wall Street did to the US and the world with mortgage securities. (Or the damage Republicans have done with voodoo economic policies.) But to say that Soros influences US politics, I will have to ask you for sources to support your claim.
I don't care about Wiener, unless the investigation shows he did something illegal, I don't care. I don't care about Schwarzenegger either. I only ask about media coverage, and repeated hypocrisy from Republicans in regard to scandals, and demanding resignations from Wiener while Vitter and other Republicans were never required to do likewise.
swamp, I have no idea what you think you are correct about, or what you want me to apologize for either.
Okay, a new question for FR -- I'd like to know more about PACS. Is Palin violating election rules with her Magical Mystery bus tour? Can anyone form a PAC, like Stephen Cobert (go Stephen!), and if so, how can he use it if he is not a political candidate?
What is it with the media's fixation on the irrelevant? How about polls, for starters. A month ago, polls said people thought that Obama was doing fair to middlin'. This month he's a miserable failure. Is there some reason you guys can't point out that the President does not wave a magic wand that changes economic policy from month to month?
Why is it kosher to allow (I'm looking at Chuck - explainer of polls, graphs, etc.) poll respondents to self-identify, as in: "Conservatives" believe such and such. There is a pervasive fiction that the majority of Americans are "conservatives". Please explain that in light of the fact that cuts to a socialist program like Social Security or Medicare is what you folks call "the third rail". How about a poll with a question that asks, "Are you conservative, liberal, or do you have a multiple personality disorder?
Is there some good reason why you continue to follow the antics of a bone-headed idiot whose primary talents are lying, advocating ignorance, and revising history? Palin, Bachmann, Gingrich - take your pick.
Six months after they were elected in a Republican tsunami, Governors Walker, Scott and LePage have tanking approval ratings. Governor Scott, in particular is down to 29% approval. How might these low approval ratings for Republicans at the state level impact the Presidential election in 2012?
In a hypothetical presidential match-up, President Obama leads Ryan by a margin of 50%-43%.
Other Republicans also trail Obama, by larger margin's than the home-state GOPer Ryan. obama leads Newt Gingrich by 53%-35%, leads Sarah Palin by 55%-36%, and leads Mitt Romney by 51%-39%.
Wow, Anna. Obama leads home state Ryan 50%-43%, that's stunning. Especially considering, I imagined Paul Ryan as the ace-in-the-hole "surprise" nominee. Guess that kills that.
Discuss the relevance of polls more than a year before the election. Everyone seems to be taking the Washington Post/pOll seriously, but not the Quinniac poll showing Obama stronger? Why is that? Is it because it doesn't play with the Romney winning stories or is it because neither are particularly important and it's a slow news day?
If you can't answer that question BOILER ROOM tell me how is it Republicans want Kagan to recuse herself because she heard what was was going on. Now, Justice Thomas's wife is a lobbyist for t-baggers who want to repeal healthcare how is that not different?
1. If the economy remains the focus of the 2012 election (seems likely, but as always, politics-wise it's a looooong way away), which GOP contender will present President Obama with his stiffest challenge?
2. The 2008 general election saw a tremendous surge in the number of new voters. Much of that was presumably due to the excitement brought on by the prospect of electing President Obama. With the economy still struggling, and several years removed from his historic election, is it possible for the President's re-election team to generate that same level of excitment and bring out those voters once again? If so, how? If not, what are the ramifications?
Teachers vote. Unions vote. Seniors vote. Women vote. Trust me, Democrats will have the enthusiasm advantage, even if the young people all decide to do something else that day.
And, I liked Kerry, but I love President Obama, and not only do I vote, I ring doorbells, make calls and post comments on blogs!
What do leading economists like Paul Krugman think about the Pawlenty proposal to spend several trillion dollars and to cut taxes by trillions for people who do not need more tax breaks? I would imagine the Pawlenty proposal would be a monumental disaster, but maybe that's what the GOP and Club for Growth are hoping will happen?
Okay, how about leading economists--throw in Ben Stein if you like. Bob, Krugman has won the Nobel Prize for Economics and that counts for a lot more than your Swoop and Poop post.
Thanks for taking our questions, Mark & Domenico. Someone on FT today asked why politicians are reading the results of elections as a mandate for themselves rather than complaints about either the economy or the party in power. I think that was the message of 2010 and also the recent NY election. Do you think the politicians get that?
Steeler Fan: I saw your message to me yesterday re: Boston Bruins but I couldn't take the time to answer you properly. I have been swamped with work and trying to plan a 4 day week in NYC next week with the girls. There are broadway tickets to buy, hotel, dinner reservations, etc. I want to make sure they get to do as much as possible. I'm constantly looking at all things NYC to make sure I don't miss anything. I found a wonderful walking tour for me that involves New Amsterdam/Colonial New York history. I'm going to do that solo for a few hours while they're seeing the Broadway Musical Mary Poppins with their dad. I can't wait!
But you made me smile with your glee at the great games thus far for the Stanley Cup. I'm glad you're enjoying the series. I have a co-worker friend who has been to 11 of the playoff games so far. Unreal.
Horton is out for the rest of the series which is devastating for the Bruins.
The hit by Rome was clearly beyond what is acceptable in terms of how late it was delivered after Horton had released the puck,” said Mike Murphy, the National Hockey League’s senior vice president of hockey operations. “And it caused significant injury.”
The Bruins are fired up now and BS. And I mean BS.
Enjoy your trip to NY next week, Pat---sounds like you'll have a blast. I was already rooting for Boston before the series----love Mark Recchi, former Penguin---and hope they bring home the Cup.
Steeler Fan: Just wait until I give the girls a tour of my old stomping grounds on Beacon Street where I lived as a child and where my parents grew up. Wait until they hear how me and my siblings and cousins spent our days trying to track down the Boston Strangler. I'm going to show them the fire escapes we climbed and the roofs we ran across trying to hunt him down.
They weren't old enough to hear about this. But now I think they are. They are going to be shocked when I tell them what I did as a kid on the streets of Boston. LOL.
Would you please tell me who is in charge of the United States Postel Service? I read that the old Postmaster General left with a golden parachute of millions. The new one has a salary of 276K and this is before deferred compensation, performance bonus, and pension payments. This is more than the President makes.Who is looking after these rediculous salaries? The USPS is going in the hole for billions
This is the thing that makes people believe we are on the wrong track Both parties are guilty but it just does not look good.
My old Governor was given a puff job in DC after he lost. People are just sick of the same old thing and then being told it is their fault that things are not going well. (See Strickland, Daschel and Frist)Bi-Partisan Health Project. (Their goal is aiding states implement the new healthlaw and find bi partisan solutions to health challenges(What????) I am sure they will be given offices and lots of aides to help them if they figure out what they are doing.
Another one that comes to mind was Mrs. Petraius who was given a high paying job (Consumer Protection Bureau,Implimentation Team Office of Servicemen affairs) In plain English it means she will tell the troops not to spend more than they make and don't sign anything until you are VERY sure of what they are signing.. Back in "the day" Mom and Dad did that for free. I'm sure it is more involved than that but people are going hungry out here. Is there any oversight?
Most Republicans in both Houses have signed a pledge, initiated by Grover Norquist, which beholds them to not raise any income taxes by any amount under any circumstances, or to bring in new revenue by closing loopholes. This pledge, which Rep. Ryan's budget adheres to, in effect freezes tax policy in time, preserving not only the Bush tax cuts but also a myriad of tax breaks and loopholes for specific industries won by well-funded lobbyists.
Do you think this "pledge" plays any part in GOP fiscal policy or is it window dressing for the base?
A more important question: If Dems signed a pledge to lobbyists thereby restricting them from performing their elected duties, the GOP/TP would s**t a brick. The Norquist pledge is unconstitutional, and Republicans are treasonous--vote them out.
Why won't any politicians investigate the gas price spike?
In 2008, oil peaked at just over $140/barrel. We paid $4/gallon of gas.
In 2011, oil peaked at just over $110/barrel, but has been around $100/barrel. Despite oil being 20-30% lower in 2011 than it was in 2008, we are paying the same price for gasoline. We should be paying $2.80/gallon today.
Business would be thriving if Americans were paying $2.80/gallon of gas today. Isn't it time for an investigation into who is intentionally harming American businesses?
FR with all due respect to Romney and Pawlenty kicking off their campaigns or Rep. Weiner's scandal, can you update us on the status of the gang of five negotiations or the Biden led talks - got any beltway information? Right about now that is probably the biggest story isn't it.
Time is running out to get some sort of agreement that could tie into or help a compromise to raise the debt ceiling increase.
Can someone ask the GOP (and now Evan Bayh) what specific regulations are currently in place that are keeping businesses from hiring, and how exactly those regulations are impeding business??? no one seems to question the old GOP lie that regulations hamper business. i want to know which ones and how? the only thing i think of when i hear the word "regulations", are ones to keep our food and water and air clean and safe; ones to keep the products we buy from harming us; ones to make sure our bridges and levees are safe and secure; ones to make sure oil drilling is not going to ruin our oceans; ones to keep banks and businesses from robbing us... In what specific way does a particular regulation hurt a business so much?
Since economics seems to be the topic driving the 2012 Presidential election, how much do we know about the people making economic policy decisions for the various GOP campaigns -- who has signed on for former Speaker Gingrich, for Gov. Hey there, we were working on a post on the Quinnipiac poll as you made the comment: http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/06/08/6812784-obama-vs-romney-take-2

Is John Boehner the only Speaker of the House to have NEVER attended a State Dinner?
If so why? lol
He heard they have a cash bar, Feisty and that monthly allowance he gets won't cover the tab.
ROTFLMAO! *ZING*
Surely his 21% pay raise could cover it... ;o)

How long do you think the confirmation process will take?

My favorite was Donald Trump. Talk about egg on the face. And then straight on to the next media circus.
Six months after they were elected in a Republican tsunami, Governors Walker, Scott and LePage have tanking approval ratings. Governor Scott, in particular is down to 29% approval. How might these low approval ratings for Republicans at the state level impact the Presidential election in 2012?
In Wisconsin, at least, the polls show that Walker and Ryan are dragging the republican field down with them.
http://tpmdc.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/05/ppp-poll-paul-ryan-unpopular-back-home-in-wisconsin.php
So, I say to them, keep digging.
Carson-3584404
ANSWER: Washington post poll sells more. the media needs the hype to make money. they need to fill up story lines.......It is called JUICY JUICE.
Sorry boiler room the phone rang.
Thanks as always guys!
Grimey,
Teachers vote.
Of the 28,000 local public jobs lost last month, how many were from states with Republican governors?
Why did Nancy Pelosi and 88 other Democrats not go on record and vote YEA on HR 1954 to raise the Debt Limit?
What do leading economists like Paul Krugman think about the Pawlenty proposal to spend several trillion dollars and to cut taxes by trillions for people who do not need more tax breaks? I would imagine the Pawlenty proposal would be a monumental disaster, but maybe that's what the GOP and Club for Growth are hoping will happen?
"leading economists like Paul Krugman"
Thanks for the laugh.
Okay, how about leading economists--throw in Ben Stein if you like. Bob, Krugman has won the Nobel Prize for Economics and that counts for a lot more than your Swoop and Poop post.
Will Weiner be able to keep it up?
Have recent developments such as the bad economy, and the Weiner scandal , impacted how likely it is the GOP will take over the Senate in 2013?
Will the campaign for 2016 start in November 2012 or will they actually wait until December 2012 to begin campaigning?
LOL.
Pat---I can't believe you hunted the Boston Strangler---that is too funny! I think we are all a little shocked to hear about this wild side of yours!
OK, seriously. Can you tell us when was the last Presidential election that was NOT about the economy?
