Weiner admits to 'several' racy online relationships, will not resign

Rep. Anthony Weiner, a married Democratic congressman from New York, admitted Monday that he sent lewd photos of himself and engaged in sexual online conversations with women he met on Facebook and Twitter over the past three years.

But he did not resign and said that he and his wife - who was not in attendance - have no intention of splitting up over the scandal.

"The picture was of me, I sent it," he told reporters in New York City of a below-the-belt photo that was sent last weekend from his Twitter account.

In a lengthy and tearful apology during which he lamented his “destructive” and “dumb” behavior, Weiner said he has had “several inappropriate conversations with women I have met online,” -- about six women over the past three years. He added that he has never met any of the women in person and has never had sex outside his marriage.

He said that the female recipients of sexually-charged photos and messages he sent were all over 18 years of age "to the best of my knowledge."

Weiner’s confession conflicts with what he told reporters last week, when he continued to insist that his Twitter account had been hacked.

“I was embarrassed and I didn’t want it to lead to other embarrassing things,” he said Monday when asked why he misled the press about his online interactions. “It was a dumb thing to do to try to tell lies about it because it just led to more lies.”

While he said he takes full responsibility for his actions, Weiner insisted that he will not give up his job representing the 9th district of New York.

“I don’t believe I did anything here that violates any law or violates my oath to my constituents,” he said.

As for Weiner - I am beyond disappointed.

I'd still like to know why dudes think women are turned on by dick pics?

As much of an asset as he was for the Democratic party - he should resign immediately for the sake of NOT giving the right wing nitwits something to fixate on for days!

Meanwhile, I'll sit back and watch the family values freaks revel in their superficial 'victory'!

Say it with me Feisty old gal - Brietbart rocks! I know you loved the part where Anthony apologized directly to Brietbart. So very precious that.

But oh yes, deflect, spin and talk about something else.

Sorry my dear - it's going to be dick pics for days. You all really are not so gullible that you think he's telling the truth now? Just 6. all of age. Oh no. just wait for it.

This here is headed to the To Catch a Predator phase now.

And Tundie - all you can come up with is he's a "dufus?" He need to immediately resign, right?

I sure hope not, let's keep this dick around. Hard, strong and in your face.

Spanky, you are mistaking a political hack for being a journalist.

Breitbart remains a crook, that should be no where close to journalism - he and his ACORN pimp buddy.

As for Wiener, whatever he chooses to do, that's his decision... and his constituents would make that call at the end of the day. I personally don't like it and wont vote for him again if I could.... but that's just me... btw, did you call for Vitter to resign - what vitter did was actually more embarrassing... and broke the law; what Ensign did borders breaking the law and what Coburn did in covering it up is even more despicable (being a minister and all).... so if they broke the law.. they need to resign... if they are just being immoral dufus, why should I ask for a resignation? not worth my time.

Yeah, I hear you Tundie Brietbart and Pimp 1, Acorn 0;

Brietbart 1, Weiner's weiner 0.

But tell you what maybe you can contrast Big Government with say Huffington post, or Salon. Christ look at Nat. Enquirer. It just rocked Edwards' world. Journalists? HACKS? How ever can you tell them apart?

From what I have been reading today, Huffington post is in big trouble.

So, Spanky, you are OK with Breitbart commandeering a microphone and podium that are not his? All in the name of self-serving grandstanding? Talk about gotcha "journalism".

I think Weiner should resign. Sadly. But so should Breitbart. Of course, in the Republican world, bringing down anyone or anything, even the country, is OK as long as your opponent fails. Nice job. Not.

A quick note - a CNN reporter provided quotes from the media at the hotel: "Breitbart stepped into the back of the room, and was recognized by the media. The started asking him questions. Finally, a couple of the press asked Brietbart to go to the microphone to answer questions for all in the room."

fielden - Brietbart should step down from what? He is a privately employed person, not an elected official. You do get that distinction, yes?

He was there for and received an apology directly from the Weiner. That had to be very, very HARD for Anthony.

Best presser EVAH! Suck it Weiner.

I haven't been a fan of Rep. Weiner for a while. I was turned off by his tactics on the floor. There was a lot of grandstanding on his part that I didn't appreciate.

Having said that, I have to be honest - I thought Rep. Weiner was telling the truth.

It's unfortunate that our reps in government continue this sort of behavior. In both parties.

Rep. Weiner can survive this. Many others have done worse.

And people wonder why more don't vote in this country.

This was beyond stupid on his part.

Astonishing...

Anthony Weiner should resign immediately.

Done and done.

Now...

Which of the other regular ladies of First Read would accept Rep. Weiner's indiscretions if he were their own hubby?

Let's hear the case for Tony, ladies...

I expect sincere expressions of loyalty and devotion without regard to the transgressions.

I'm certain the new bride will agree with you.

Gotta hand it to Brietbart. How many Liberal notches in his gun belt now? Three, so far, by my count. First is Acorn, second was the Shirley Sherrod incident, and now Tony Weiner.

Go ahead and crow Repubs!! You earned a victory lap or three!!! What you failed to do at the ballot box you were able to accomplish with nothing more than a picture of a penis! Ha! How's that for economy of effort! Watch the Dems work like hell to get elected, and then you dash it all to pieces at their feet and stand there laughing while they bleed! Good for you.

Now I hope the Dems begin to understand what they're up against. Well Dems, what about it? Have you helped these people enough, or are you going to carelessly throw away whatever political viability you may have left?

All these Liberal lions, gone!! First Ted Kennedy due to natural causes. Then Robert Byrd. Now the very few Democrats with any stones are getting taken out, one by one: Tony Weiner, Russ Feingold, Alan Grayson and now it looks like we could lose Dennis Kucinich to redistricting!! The repubs aren't adept enough we gotta' destroy ourselves.

You must admit. Weiner did a good job at destroying himself, and he certainly lived up to his name. He deserves every bit of the suffering he is about to endure, but his family doesn't. Everywhere he goes now he and his kid are going to have Connies flashing penis pix at him like he was Brett Favre. Nice going Weiner! Thanks! As if these people didn't have enough ammunition you gave them a cornucopia of attention-diverting, comic, scandal fodder.

Advise to Dems: Keep it in your pants, check your shrubs before you go out, never use an open line, and for God's sake don't take a picture of your dick and send it to a group of cash-hungry females. If you still feel the suicidal urge, then swallow the end of a muzzle and squeeze one off into your melon and get it over with quick. Spare the rest of the people who believe in and work for the Progressive movement the pain.

How "Bush" league can you get?

BREAKING NEWS: As reporters await a statement from Weiner, Andrew Breitbart hijacks the press conference:

Breitbart: "I demand an apology for being called a hijacker of media information. And I have other photos I am holding as blackmail until Weiner apologizes for calling me a blackmailer."

In the meantime, though Weiner showed sincere remorse and repentance, the religious right-wing refuses to forgive him because he is a Democrat.

Hey Breitbart -- In the future Weiner will stop doing stupid things, but you'll still be an arsewipe. And if Anthony Weiner knows who Paul Revere is, I'll still vote for him.

Along with David Vitter and Gov. Sanford, really, John Ensign didn't resign either--he didn't resign until forced to. Schwarzenegger kept his indiscretions private until out of office, and so did Edwards. But too bad for you John Edwards, the pain and suffering of your family is not enough--we want blood!

Weiner is a disgrace along with a long list from both sides. For the sake of the party he should go.

Breitbart should get an apology from Weiner ,and there were a lot of First Readers who vilified him and couldn't believe Weiner would do such a thing.

Have fun Repubs but remember when it's your turn.

    #1.21 - Mon Jun 6, 2011 11:29 PM EDT

Breitbart didn't take the podium on his own yesterday, he was asked by the press at the conference to step up to the mike so that he could be heard answering questions. Weiner (or his staff) did owe Breitbard an apology for lying about how it was Breitbart that hacked his account.

For those of you that think Breitbart is such slime, what about all the liberal counterparts to him? There are plenty of leftist organizations out there doing exactly the same thing (funded by George Soros, MoveOn.Org comes to mind) to catch republicans in the exact same situation.

If these politicians (both parties) are so upset that there are organizations out there purposely trying to catch them is these type situations, then they shouldn't put themselves in these type situations.

CNN did the same. CNN at the scene reporter Mary Snow was so impressed that Rep. Weiner "stood there for 30 minutes taking questions". Wow. What a guy.

Noticed one item during the press conference where Rep.Weiner said about the young women he communicated with, he "took the women's word" that they were of legal age. Apparently Rep Weiner didn't much care if they were or not, I guess he believed them, like him, were of high moral character, and wouldn't lie about such things.

So what committees is Rep. Weiner on in Congress? What information does he know that others would like to know, and might use any methods necessary to get that information?

Sorry to disappoint you, but I said on the last thread that I would apologize to Breitbart and that Weiner should resign. Nice try. Wrong gal.

I'm not worried so much about the age thing as the possibility he left open that he could be set up, either for blackmail or possibly worse, as JoAnna also suggests. He met these women because he was a Congressman, making it a public matter, and he needed to show better judgment. Period.

I guess that the same thing could be said about Bill Clinton. He chose to stay and face the consequences, too, and although I think it was not grounds for impeachment, in some senses it did affect the rest of his presidency. I wouldn't say that he should have resigned, but it did do him damage, and it took a long time to repair that. In my mind, and in the minds of a lot of people, we never saw him quite the same way again. It diminished him.

That being said, Weiner has done the damage to himself, and the damage may end up being fatal as it relates to his career. All that's left now is for the vultures to pick him over. I have compassion for that. If he continues this course he's on much longer, though, I'll be very disappointed.

      Anna Molly:

I can't believe that Weiner, who was apparently savvy enough to use a private e-mail account to exchange the photos with the second woman, would do something so stupid in the open on Twitter. That says "hack" to me in big red letters. I also think the coincidence suggests that whoever hacked him (I'll go with Dan Wolfe, the guy who claims he originally captured the Twitter pic) knew there were other pictures, too.

And Weiner, of course, has known this right from the start. That's why he couldn't answer the famous question, and why he has seemed to be holding his breath. Even if he was hacked, he knew someone had the original of that photo and suspected there would be worse to come.

Sorry AM, That sounded like a pretty intricate conspiracy theory to me. I guess I was wrong.

Yeah, I know, and I was the one who was wrong. What more do you want?

By the way, that isn't exactly a ringing endorsement of Andrew Breitbart's character. Who knows whether he would be capable of setting up what I thought of, but surely you'd agree he's at least as smart as I am.

And heaven only knows Karl Rove could have thought of it. And we already know it wouldn't have been beneath him.

Which is why Weiner needs to resign. That and the fact that he admitted to lying to his colleagues, the press, and the public. I didn't think he was quite that stupid, so that's why I thought the hack was more probable.

After John Edwards, I should have known that there really is no limit on self-destructive behavior by politicians who become impressed by their own self-importance.

Weiner can stay in Congress. But anything he says from now on, who will believe him? We know he lies to his wife, the media, and apparently even himself. We know he lies about his "relationships" with his co-ed friends. We know he'll throw others under the bus, even when the responsibility/fault is wholly his own. Da Noid.

The Lamestream Media left things "hanging" So to speak there was a time when NBC ABC and CBS would have been the ones to break the Story of a Lying Congressmen. but those days are over. they hopped on the WEINER wagon and were enjoying the silent ride.

      Steve,

There was also a time where "news organizations" simply reported the news and didn't make the news...given Mr. Breitbart's history with ACORN and Shirley Sherrod (READ: "Pay no attention to what's on the cutting room floor!") you can see why there was skepticism surrounding this story.

Ok, ok Noid I got it - big old conspiracy to get Anthony.

But dude confessed. To it all [or at least to the stuff we know about so far - cause there will be more, there always is.]

So where will you and Oliver Stone be dining this evening?

      Spanky,

I'm merely asking a question...is it not possible that his Twitter account was hacked?

We know that Breitbart isn't responsible for the photo. However, how did he get the photo?

...and, no, even if it's proven that he was hacked it does not exonerate him.

Let's take it real slow Noid - no hacking, just a lot of Weiner.

All Weiner, all the time. He did it all by his very little self.

There are a bunch of chicks flooding Breitbart with photos, texts and e mails. I'll say one thing for Weiner, he was a very prolific little pecker.

Can we believe what Weiner says, can we trust his judgement, can we trust he won't drive while sexting? David Vitter was back in the public forum very quickly, as if nothing happened, and went on to be reelected. Teddy Kennedy went on to do great work, and so has Bill Clinton--not only in his second term but also with his Global Initiative.

And just think, in the meantime we can all have fun with Weiner jokes. Santorum is very grateful because his name isn't being Googled as much right now. So is Gingrich in regard to his Tiffany account. And what's that I heard about Palin planning to run with Joe the Unlicensed Plumber?

        #4.17 - Mon Jun 6, 2011 9:37 PM EDT

Correction -- Gringrich is on a luxury cruise, not buying more bling.

          #4.18 - Mon Jun 6, 2011 9:42 PM EDT

DaNoid for some reason you can't grasp this;Weiner admitted it HE DID IT. You knew from the get go it wasn't hacked if a Federal Employee's twitter account is hacked he would go to FBI immediately. He didn't. He didn't even go to D.C. or White House police.

HE was guilty and lied to try and cover it up. Good luck to him and his marriage.

Mr. Weiner, you may not believe you need to resign, but I would bet the majority of Americans, including the constituents in your district, believe you should. No one will believe anything you say in the future after the series of lies you offered up for more than a week....not to mention impugning others in an attempt to cover your misdeeds. You are a dishonorable liar and do not deserve to serve one single day more in the U.S. Congress.

It's interesting you should state that...I read the following on Friday...it's probably closer to the truth on how we as a society feel about sex scandals than we'd care to admit:

              blogs.forbes.com/susannahbreslin/2011/06/03/weinergate-offers-a-window-into-americas-faux-prudery/

"Americans are fascinated by political sex scandals because the politician is doing what Americans are doing but won’t admit, or what they wish they were doing but won’t say."

It's always the same and totally bi-partisan

                      1-shocking accusation

2-Stiff-lipped denial (or elaborate BS story, or BOTH)

3-more damning info/ on other sex partners, drug dealers etc. surfaces

                      4-Press conference scheduled.

5-Tearful speech taking "Full responsibility" regretting "disappointing" wife, kids, constituents, God and statement that they will continue doing the people's business/won't resign

                      6-RESIGNATION

I mean, what was the media supposed to go to Congressman Weiner's office, knock on the door and demand that he "drop trou" so they could confirm if the photo really was him?

Were they supposed to try and interview the intended recipient of the photo? (Do the words "No Comment" mean anything to you?)

Were they supposed to try and ask for access to the Congressman's computer? (...and do you really think they'd get access?)

Thanks for the correction, and no it wasn't a typo.

I don't know what you are considering group think (who comes up with stupid phrases like that?). Just what I would think if my wife had to tell me the same thing.

You are way too angry. Go back to screaming at the wind.

Another "sheeple-tastic" response. Focus on the emotions which you perceive, and they are only perceptions, or in your case misperceptions, to be involved rather than the substance of the debate. They have programmed you well, deeply into the shallowness of group-think.

                              "group think"... what a joke

That's exactly what they have trained you to "think". It is much more of a conditioned response, actually. They are trying it now with the "OCCAM's" Razor trifle. Sheeple along now, the flock is calling you.

Maybe his old lady is not that impressed with his weener, and he was just seekin another opinon. I'll go with that one.

The fact that Breitbart got something right makes him no less a scumbag, And as long as republicans make excuses for people like Vitter and Ensign, they have no claim to the high ground.

Oh and Pat, how is Acorn doing these days? I recall the former HEAD [Weiner reference intended] was going to file suit against Brietbart and the pimp. How's that going? Winning?

Yeah Greg I use a little dark humor from time to time as a kind of coping mechanism, for years I helped people deal with everything from petty to horribly tragic in my career. Truthfully I am very disappointed, I thought this kid was on the ball, he seemed to speak up and stand his ground. Then he pulls these punk stunts, like I have said before when a man does something like this it becomes the one thing his opponents remember, and the the one thing his supporters can't forget. Sad thing when a man plays fast and loose with his family's good name. By the way I'm human, and have my faults, I have been called a sawed off little prick, but I have never sent anybody a picture of my sawed off little prick. Why do they even call it facebook?

I had the sad and unfortunate opportunity to watch Congressman Weiner's public confession and apology. It was pitiful. I actually started to feel sorry for the guy. I was very glad his wife wasn't made to stand beside him.

Unfortunately, his credibility is shot, especially after the circus he choreographed last week surrounding this issue. His greatest offenses are the extravagant lying --- mistrust will haunt him all of his days -- and the blatant stupidity of not knowing one should never take pictures, make videos, or write anything down.

                                        Ok,

So here's Mr. Weiner, who's been accused of nothing more than bad taste and judgement and those on the right are screaming that he should immediately resign from office. The photos and conversations were private and limited to only those that were willingly participating in them. No one is saying that he did anything illegal. Immature, bad taste, poor judgement, sure. But intended to be private.

So where is the outrage that should be directed at Scott Brown. Here's a man who posed for photos at least as graphic, posed for money, and knew these photos would be distributed worldwide, for anyone with the price of a magazine would have access to them. Yet, with this being known in advance of his run for office, republicans still elected him.

Someone help me understand how one is so terrible that there is a push to ruin one mans life, both politically and personally, while the other is at least just forgotten and forgiven and in some cases celebrated. A private mistake versus a commercial venture, with both being pictures of partially clad men.

Anyone care to try to clear this murky difference up for me?

                                        vwterry,

There's a little tidbit I learned in business that applies to personal life. "Don't ever do anything or say anything you wouldn't want to see on the front page of a newspaper, or have to explain to your mom."

It has nothing to do with being paid. Scott Brown made the conscious decision to pose tastefully for a magazine. He knew the photos would be published. He probably did not know, personally, the majority of people who would see the photos (subscribers or purchasers).

Congressman Weiner, is obviously embarrassed by his behavior, so he even thinks he was being inappropriate. He was secretly flirting and being suggestive to women he met on the internet. If he didn't want the photos public, he shouldn't have taken them.

The photos and behavior really aren't the issues. It's the lying about them. And the intent.

A different standard seems to apply to women. Look at the number of women who'd simply posed nude in the past and lost their jobs because of it. Many of those photos were neither suggestive or lewd.

I can't believe I'm explaining this to you. It seems so obvious.

The photos were just an indicator that Wiener is a blossoming sexual predator, the red warning flag is the fact that he lied. Does his actions demonstrate the character of person you want to represent you? Not me regardless of party. The only thing he is truly sorry about is that he got caught.

VW you are really stretching it comparing Scott Brown to Weiner. Brown was 22 years old and not in politics. Weiner was 47 years old, married and behaving like a 13 year old boy. He had no idea the age of the girls he was texting and lied about the whole situation.
