Chaffetz: Still a 'definite maybe' on primary challenge to Hatch

Tea Party-backed Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, has Sen. Orrin Hatch in his sights.

A grinning Chaffetz said on MSNBC’s The Daily Rundown that he remains a “definite maybe” on a bid to unseat the six-term Utah Republican in a primary.

Hatch’s recent voting record has turned rightward in recent years, particularly since he witnessed his Senate colleague Bob Bennett defeated by Tea Party-supported primary challenger Mike Lee in the 2010 election.

Asked if that made Hatch now more worthy of conservative support, Chaffetz offered an emphatic no.

“No, I don’t. I don’t,” he said. “That’s why I’m considering running against him.”

Chaffetz said that he “applauds” some of Hatch’s recent outspokenness against the Democratic majority in the Senate but that he remains concerned about Hatch’s past legislative history, which has included some bipartisan projects that angered staunch conservatives.

“He’s been a great public servant,” Chaffetz said of Hatch, “but the election in 2012 will also be about the future.”

These tea baggers cannot move white OR right enough!

Don't get me wrong - I have zero sympathy if the 'truthfully challenged' Hatch goes down in flames!

I think this would be a great test of a Tea Party candidate vs a more traditional GOP incumbent Senator. The implications of a Hatch loss are enormous. The GOP would have to give up even more control to the fringe and Tea Party members of their party.

It this most conservative of states (Utah) everyone is salivating over the huge new National Security Complex that is being built here, while at the same time voting for people who want to cut federal spending to the bone. Where do they think the money is coming from? the tooth fairy?

Hatch made his bed and can only get up on the RIGHT side. He will be forced to drink the cold pre-brewed bitter tea or loose his seat. March lock step or get stepped on.

It is all or nothing for TP nation. Candidates will be required wipe themselves with quintuple ply Georgia Pacific KOCH TP or no more money bags. All while they disavow even having a left hand.

When they wake up, like Hatch is about to, it will be too late to change the fact that they, both blinded (RINO) politicians and low info voters, will have voted for their own demise.

"He's been a great public servant"

Soooooo, what is your plumb line by which you are making that statement? If he doesn't have 'conservative support' than what has he done that would make him a great public servant?

If he's a great public servant why are you running to replace him? Does that mean that you will be a super duper public servant?

Why do  people here at FR feel so much hate and distrust toward the Tea Party movement? It seems to consumes so many here, I was just wondering where does it come from.  Why so much hate?

It is because of a difference in opinion on the role of the government in American's lives.

Because they don't agree with the tea party's ideals, they resort to name calling and personal attacks on posters that do not agree with them. It is not really a forum for discussion; a give and take of ideas, as much as it is a place to vent their hatred for their fellow Americans that disagree with them.

    i.e.:

There is nothing in the Constitution that says the Government will provide healthcare for all Americans.

If you say that you want the government to help provide healthcare, you are labeled and called a freeloader and lazy bum.
If you say that you don't want the government to provide healthcare, you are labeled a racist, money grubbing thief that only cares about themselves.

Common sense says the reality is somewhere in the middle of this.

The fact that the posters can remain anonymous and isolated from the people they are abusing, lends itself to this kind of treatment. If you are looking for an honest open dialog, try talking to your neighbors, family, co-workers... You will be presented with much more information and not walk away feeling abused. You may even be swayed by the other side's reasonable arguments when they are presented to you that way.
