First Thoughts: Off and running

2012 presidential race to pick up speed in June… Team Obama’s good week, BUT… President signs Patriot Act extensions via auto-pen… NBC’s Brian Williams provides perspective on the auto-pen… Romney’s Iowa dilemma… Bachmann’s technical difficulties… Demon RINO… All politics -- even regarding Middle East peace -- is local… “Meet the Press” has McConnell and Schumer… And have a great and safe Memorial Day weekend.

*** Off and running: If this month was the 2012 presidential field stretching its legs, jogging in place and walking up to the starting line, next month is when the race really begins. Last night, we learned that Mitt Romney will formally announce his presidential campaign from New Hampshire this Thursday on June 2. Rick Santorum will do the same from southwestern Pennsylvania on June 6. Also in June, Michele Bachmann will announce her presidential decision from Waterloo, IA, where she was born. (World history buffs, though, might raise their eyebrows at that location.) And the month will bring us another GOP presidential debate, this one to take place in New Hampshire. It took us a while, but the 2012 presidential race is finally about to pick up speed. Everyone, enjoy your long Memorial Day weekend.

*** Team Obama’s good week, but…: If Mitt Romney -- who today visits Iowa -- had a good week last week, then that honor this week goes to President Obama and the Democrats. Yes, the Israel-Palestine story remained a domestic headache for the White House. And, yes, the European trip provided some protocol and date-signing gaffes. But look at the positives: a well-received stop in Ireland (the ancestral homeland to quite a few U.S. swing voters), the Democrats’ victory in NY-26 (which put Republicans on the defensive on Medicare), Florida Gov. Rick Scott’s 29% approval rating in the state (which isn’t welcome news for the eventual GOP nominee in this key battleground state), and Sarah Palin’s return to the 2012 spotlight. But this under-the-Beltway-radar story isn’t good news for Team Obama: The U.S. economy appears to have hit a wall. It was a good week, but…

*** Auto-tune and auto-pen: After the Senate and the House passed legislation yesterday extending key Patriot Act provisions right before they expired, President Obama signed it into law -- from France, via an auto-pen. The White House confirms to NBC News that this is the FIRST time in U.S. history that a president has authorized the use of an auto-pen to sign a bill into law. "Failure to sign this legislation poses a significant risk to U.S. national security. As long as Congress approves the extension, the president will direct the use of the auto-pen to sign it," White House spokesman Nick Shapiro said. That said, of all laws to do this with, this may have been the worse one to pick -- given the conspiratorial feelings about this law on the left and right about it. Then again, the national-security aspect probably gives the White House cover.

*** Some perspective on the auto-pen: NBC’s Brian Williams, whose duties as a White House intern in the 1970s included changing the pens, emails First Read a bit of perspective: "The machines are ubiquitous in American politics and even business. Presidents, governors, senators, and members of Congress and some CEO's use them to personalize correspondence -- or in this case legislation." More from Williams: "They are also ubiquitous on signed photos of politicians -- though experts, collectors, and lay people alike can invariably spot small flaws, mostly in the form of unnaturally squiggly lines on signatures -- a dead giveaway of brands like Auto-Pen, and the one preferred by the White House for many years, Signa-Signer."

*** Romney’s Iowa dilemma: Back to the 2012 race… As mentioned above, Romney’s in Iowa today, making stops in Ankeny (at 11:15 am ET), Des Moines (1:00 pm ET), and Cedar Rapids (at 6:45 pm ET). And the visit has produced this speculation: Does he play or not in Iowa? The New York Times’ Zeleny writes that “the evidence suggests that he is leaning against a strategy of bypassing Iowa. He is the only candidate with a network of supporters in all 99 counties, many of whom say they have received calls from Mr. Romney’s aides in recent days.” The downside to Romney playing in Iowa: If he loses the caucuses -- as he did in ’08 -- that could wound his candidacy. (See: Clinton, Hillary.) But if you believe Iowa is a swing state in a general election, you have to play in the caucuses.

*** Technical difficulties: Due to the Patriot Act votes, Michele Bachmann was unable to attend a GOP dinner in Iowa last night. And her address -- via video -- didn’t go smoothly. The Washington Post: “Bachmann later addressed several hundred Republican activists on a shaky video link. As she talked about the Patriot Act, the video went dark. She said she recorded the speech she had planned to deliver here, but because of technical difficulties could not play it at the dinner. She instead directed people to her Facebook page to watch the speech. ‘I feel terrible about this, absolutely terrible,’ Bachmann said, promising to ‘take a rain check.’”

*** Demon RINO: Anyone who read our stuff from the 2010 cycle probably remembers our fondness for “Demon Sheep” -- the Carly Fiorina Web video that was produced by GOP ad-maker Fred Davis. This cycle, Davis is working for Jon Huntsman. But a Christian conservative blog, Verum Serum, has a video that appears to be a “Demon Sheep” spoof. It shows a rhino walking through the grass and then cuts to Huntsman’s moderate positions, portraying him as a Republican In Name Only (RINO, get it?).

*** Folks, all politics is local: Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu got a poll bump out of his trip to the U.S. A new Haartez poll shows that after Netanyahu’s trip, his approval jumped 13 points to 51%, up from 38% five weeks ago. (By the way, a Jerusalem Post poll shows that by a 40%-12% margin, more Israeli Jews think President Obama is more Palestinian than Israeli.) It’s a reminder that it’s important to view world leaders through the same political lense we view our own. (Hat tip: PoliticalWire)

*** On the 2012 trail: Gingrich is in South Carolina… Santorum delivers a speech in DC… And Pawlenty is in New York.

*** Meet’s Sunday lineup: On Sunday, NBC’s David Gregory interviews Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer, and a roundtable consisting of Harold Ford Jr., Alex Castellanos, David Brooks, and Ruth Marcus.

*** Have a great and safe Memorial Day weekend: Our morning First Read note will return on Tuesday…

Countdown to Iowa GOP straw poll: 78 days
Countdown to NV-2 special election: 109 days
Countdown to Election Day 2011: 165 days
Countdown to the Iowa caucuses: 255 days

I want a white guy, or a conservative white gal, to be our next president, but not a Moron - I mean Mormon. That's funny- just a one letter difference.

Mormans are not real christians. They are sort of like scientologist. They made up their own god. They don't think that polygamy is wrong. Whatever happened to men like our four fathers. We need a Washington from Valley Forge, a Franklin - who was not afraid to fly a kite in a storm so that he could invent electricity, a Lincoln - who could bring the red states and blue states back together, a Jeferson - who dared to be the odd man out and not live by the dictates of the Monarchy. These are the four fathers that made America great. This is the reason we have a flag that we should worship as we do the cross.

Where are the true patriots. We need a Reagan who dared to stand for our values. He was the last great guy who cared about the American white male. He did not give our country away. He respected colored folks and did not let them run wild. In 2008 he would have taken a stand and not given up. As stupid as George W. was when he lost the election he knew to fight. Eventually the liberal communist socialist Al Gore gave up and ran away in defeat. We need a brave leader.

FOX New has been trying to groom one, but has come under intense fire. Glenn Beck even opened a University to specialize in history to prepare future leaders for law school, but our people are giving up too soon. Now is a time for Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin, Michelle Bachmann, or Rev. Mike Huckabee to run. They are real christians who hate the same people that we do. They will stand up for our values. They will keep our country strong. I am sure Palin herself would shoot between the eyes anyone who dares to disrespect our flag. We need a leader who will force our citizens back to our christian roots and heritage. We need a strong God-fearing leader; not an opportunist. We need to take our country back before it is too late.

Why a white guy or girl?

      #27.1 - Fri May 27, 2011 1:58 PM EDT

You would accept a Glenn Beck run for the Presidency?

        #27.2 - Fri May 27, 2011 2:12 PM EDT

        Willie,

What I'm trying to get out of you...which this is the second time I have tried...is 1) How can you be so racist and call yourself a Christian?

        2) I need you to understand that Glenn Beck does not really have a university...nor is he the head of any university. Glenn Beck didn't even graduate college.

          #27.3 - Fri May 27, 2011 2:16 PM EDT

He talks about his University on his radio show in the morning. He talks about it on his FOX News show. I found it online. It is big like a major U.S. city. This is the web site. http://www.glennbeck.com/becku/

You liberals who lie do not even check your facts. I had this same problem when I talked about the Excellency In Broadcast award that is given to Rush Limbaugh every year. No one has beat him yet. He has the highest rated show on the radio.

Check out the web site. Glenn Beck is the headmaster of a major university. He had to graduate to head up a major school. He is the person responsible for teaching the people at Fox News the facts that they present to the public. He is more intelligent then Obama who published or wrote for the Harvard school paper.

Beck has been trying to warn us of upcoming doom. The liberals are pushing him off the T.V. He loves his country. I've seen him cry often. Once he couldn't console himself because someone dececrated the flag. He is a very loyal soul who hates the same people we all should hate. He has been warning us about non christians, liberals, communists, socialist, and sherial laws which are taking over our cities.

He doesn't pander to colored people. Look at his shows. His audiences are always filled with Americans. Only two times did I see minorities on his show. Once was an old preacher that bacically worshipped him and a drum band when what Bush put in place finally killed Bin Laden. Obama is a hero because he did not stop the Bush doctrines. These are historical facts.

Finally, I am not a racist. One of my good friends is colored. She works at the grocery store and always waits on me. She loves to hear the things I have to say. She often calls her friends to her me teach her about America. In reality I think she loves me. She often agrees with me when I tell her about her peoples place in history. She is always amazed. So my friend get away from the racist crap. This is what liberals call people who love their country and want to get back to the good old days where our people mattered.

              Willie,

You are a racist when you say "I want a white guy, or a conservative white girl"...you imply that a black person couldn't or shouldn't fill the role. That is a racist comment...and if you don't think this is a racist comment than perhaps you remember writing these comments...

              May 23rd

"We know that he is in part white. This is not the part that should not be President. Based on race alone four years should be good enough."

              May 26th

"This is what will make Obama win, and America can't take another 4 years of having a black guy as leader."

Willie how are those comments not racist comments? It's not even debatable. And the funniest part is that you claim to be Christian. Would Jesus not love someone of another race? Doesn't he preach that all people are his children....that you should not judge. And you are doing all of those things...in God's eyes you are a sinner and certainly not a Christian.

Also...Glenn Beck's University is only online and it is a fake university...I'm sorry that you were fooled.

              Jolly,

Yeah...I can't tell which he is. He seems to be so stupid and out there that it's hard for me to believe he's genuine. I mean really...who could believe that Beck really owns and heads a university? Thats so dumb it's funny.

                #27.8 - Fri May 27, 2011 4:43 PM EDT

What are you a detective? I love everybody. It is a christian's responsibility to love everybody. I give money in my church that goes to starving children in Africa. We teach them the Bible and send clothing so that they don't have to live naked. We collect food for shelters so that helps minorities not to rely on wefare. I am sorry that I said colored people. My friend made it clear I should call the under privileged "people of colored".

When I refer to colored people I am refering to people who play no significant role in the intellectual side of our America. Most of them are either colored darker skinned or illegals. They are responsible for corrupting this nation by pushing their liberal socialism in the form of welfare. This is what Newt Gingrich was trying to explain.

The America that our four fathers designed on paper did not permit people of colored to rule over us. They have jammed and rammed civil right laws and affirmative action down our throats and the majority of Americans are tired of their crap. They hate this country. Look at the images.

Our children dress up in red, white, and blue for patriotic holidays. They carry flags they are proud to wave. Do you see little colred children exhibiting such pride? Yet, if we tell the truth about how they are destroying our great nation we are perceived as racist. We love our country and we want what is best. We believe that all people should be respected. That does not mean that those people should rule over us.

Our great land was founded on biblical principles. The great leaders of America have always been the European decendants. We where the ones who brought missionaries to the savage peoples who had no understanding of government. They were uncivilized beast. God has always been on our side. We want what is best for all mankind. This is our christian duty. Race mixing is another by-product that is ending the design god intended for the human family.

Conservatives are not racist. I have never met a racist conservative. I have met liberals who not only hate people of the colored, they also destroy their hopes by giving them welfare. Let those people pull themselves up as every other group of imigrants did. Make those lazy black guys get jobs and take care of their families. Even Obama tried to push these concerns.

There are some good guys who think just as I do. Clarence Thomas, Alan Keyes, Michael Steele, Michelle Malkin, and the other colored guys who work on FOX News. All of these men have worked to better themselves. We all should be working together to make this land of our great. This is the real love we can show for all mankind.

Real conservatives love both God and country. So cut the racist crap. Most Americans agree with me.

Willie is a liberal posing as a conservative, this is often done on many blogs. Liberals have to do this type of postings since they can't win a debate on facts.

The next joker planning on throwing his hat in the ring is Bolton. I suppose he'll run on de-funding and breaking up the UN. That's his main area of foreign policy expertise since that's what people remember him most for.

This could actually have legs. With no UN, the GOP won't have to worry about any war crimes charges against G.W. Bush and Cheney, which seem to be the reason the GOP so staunchly defends the right to use torture against any enemies we have.

The Conservative narrow-minded 2012 Republican contenders jocking for position now include Rick Perry from Texas. There are so many to choose from, my mind swims with who to choose. But wait - I think therefore I can not vote Republican because they call themselves conservatives.

The definition of a social conservative is: a political or moral ideology that believes that government has a role in encouraging or enforcing what they consider traditional values or behaviors. The question is who are they to force their Social conservative values on the American public? Others who are considered Social Conservatives are Michele Bachmann, Herman Cain and Rick Santorum. Who do these people think they are to shove their agenda on the American public? Another definition is "It is the persistent image of society as a command structure in which the responsibilities of leadership can be exercised within the framework of a strong state manifested divine-right royalism.
US president Ronald Reagan, who was a self-declared conservative, is widely seen as a symbol of American conservatism. In an interview, he said "I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism." Here's a known individual who openly stated the virtues of Libertarian conservative. While many religious conservatives believe that government should have a role in defending moral values, libertarian conservatives such as Barry Goldwater advocated a hands-off government where social values were concerned.
Libertarian conservatives support strict laissez-faire policies such as free trade which is what Rand and Ron Paul adhere to to the point of discrimination and bigotry.
Laissez-faire an environment in which transactions between private parties are free from state intervention, including restrictive regulations, taxes, tariffs and enforced monopolies, thus allowing discrimination and bigotry as seen ab ove..
Religious conservatives principally seek to apply the teachings of particular religions to politics, sometimes by merely proclaiming the value of those teachings, at other times by having those teachings influence laws. This allows one person to force his religious beliefs onto others whether they want it or not!
Fiscal conservatism is the economic philosophy of prudence in government spending and debt and a government does not have the right to run up large debts and then throw the burden on the taxpayer. This is the ultimate denial that there are: those who do not have the capability to earn for their keep, those who have outlived their usefulness and those who can be thrown under the bus.

Religious conservatives, whom we consider social conservatives, bring our moral values to the front line. When we took prayer out of the schools our country tripped on a downward road of moral decay. When we allowed women the freedom to murder their babies we drained the future of talent we will never know. The Ten Commandments, that we paterned our Constitution under, tell us that we should not kill. The only people we should kill are murderers this is why we want to protect the death penalty. We believe in the sanctity of life.

When we set aside minorities as a special group or a protected class we are in fact working against fairness for all people. When we do not force our children to say the Pledge of Alegiance or stand for the Star Spangled Banner we are teaching disrespect for our nation. Our children will become flag burners. This is what our men in uniform are fighting for today. We must punish those with death who disrespect the flag of God's country. There is a social order that was created by God and if we tamper with that we will continue to spin out of control.

Children are having sex at younger ages and producing babies. Ponography is everywhere, and is creeping into advertisements. Some churches, i.e. black churches, are becoming like topless bars with dancing and all sorts of evil. They gyrate and shot as if they are at a party with their loud rock and roll music rather than sacred tunes.

Men are becoming more and more homosexual in their ways thanks to hollywood. We are slowly becoming more and more demonic as the years roll on. We must put a stop to the things that are destroying our traditions and customs. We were set aside as a special people to help the world. How can we help anyone if we are all equal?

Women are working more and more outside the home. Children are being diagnosed with ADHD and autism because the mothers are not mothering. More and more dads are staying home this is causing them to have sex with baby sitters and making their sons homosexual. One of my neighbor's sons and another's daughter was turned into a homosexual. It is a woman's role to bear children and be a helpmeat for man. It is a man's traditional role to be a hunter and a gatherer. Today men are standing up for gun control in larger numbers. The constitution states that it is our right and duty to own guns in case our government misbehaives. George Washington said, "The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants". We must be armed to stand for our principals and willing to fight as needed to keep our country strong.

The Republicans have become weak fighting for our freedoms. They have become like the democrats who continue to sell our great land to the highest bidders. We are now owned by Red China and the Chinese people.

The Tea Party is the new moral majority that will take us back to the days when we were a proud and respected people. We do not hate anyone other than the enemies of our great flag. We are the party of Reagan whom we still honor today. Some are dead like Jerry Falwell, and Bob Jones, Sr. who died in the trenches for a moral state. Some have come under fire like Trent Lott.

We will stand strong behind John Boehner untill he delivers this country back to the safe hands of our people. We need a true conservative to run who shares both our heritage, our traditions, and our moral values. We need more guys like Rand and Ron Paul who will fight to rid us of civil rights laws that cause reverse discrimination. We want everyone to have a fair shake of the American Dream. We don't care about the color of skin or religion so long as they believe in God and the same God. Being an Atheist or muslim is un-American. This is one nation under God as stated in the pledge of alegiance. We must honor this great land and keep it free from those who will defile it. This is the heart and soul of real conservative principals.

This is freedom. It is the freedom people are coming to America for. You can not understand this with your liberal leftist mind. Christianity will make you free. In the words of Sean Hannity, "Let not your heart be trouble". When we get our country back we will make it better.

                                #31.3 - Fri May 27, 2011 10:55 PM EDT

Dictating to others is not freedom. Letting people like yourself restrict our actions, tell us what to think, and brand us as lesser humans isn't freedom.

You are a superstitious, authoritarian fool, a danger to America.

I am a Christian, fool, a deacon, elder, and board member at a mainline Protestant church. I give my money and time to my congregation and the larger community. We serve the hungry, the homeless, the abused. Our people went to Mississippi as Freedom Riders, ran the local Ronald McDonald House, and founded the local hospice. We've been to New Orleans after Katrina, to Appalachia, and to Central America using our time and talent to help the people living in those places.

You profess Christianity but you don't speak for me. Don't presume to do so. You have no right to impose your bigotry on others. You have every right to practice your own faith as you see fit NONE to insist that I express mine in the same way. You've taken up the cross yet still live in fear.

You are what Sinclair Lewis warned us of, wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.

Of course it'll pick up speed in June, the GOP circus will start it's downhill roll by then with airhead Palin and nutcase Bachmann manning the out of control tiller.

Despite any protestations to the contrary, look for Mittens to virtually ignore Iowa. He stood some chance when Huckabee bailed, but now that Bachmann "feels a calling", she will soak up the bible-thumper vote, and that's who will be determining the outcome of the GOP Caucus.

Ironically, I think Terry Branstad is an early Pawlenty supporter, yet it was Branstad who re-activated the bible thumpers in order to win his last election. Oh, he may have allowed Vander Plaatz to motivate them, but Branstad is the one who gave them legitimacy.

The only one left I can see who could beat Bachmann in the GOP Iowa Caucus would be Palin, but I sincerely doubt that she is running for office, ever again.

The locals will be pissy for a few days that Bachmann had to cancel her appearance at their fundraiser, but the bible thumpers will explain the error of their ways to them in short order. If Branstad comes out for anyone, it will be Pawlenty, but that won't matter much.

Romney will need to win NH, though, and I expect that's what he will be focusing on.

I find it interesting that none of you, even the article above, mentions Herman Cain.

Meanwhile Washington/ Congress/ the Prez just dillydally along...too afraid to do anything substantial concerning our debt because they don't want to piss off their constituents. Everyone of these self-serving ego-maniacs in D.C. are concerned with only one thing; how to preserve their slimy political hides.

Why are all these republicans running, they have nothing to offer? They have no plan for 20 million good jobs. It's just the same old proven failed supply side economics, the same proven failed trade deals, and the same proven failed immigration policies, they really have nothing, just complaints, and you don't need to get elected to complain. I complain all the time, I don't hold any elected office, no one pays me to complain. The idea of running for office and getting elected is that you have solutions to all the problems, republicans have no solutions, just the same old proven failed stuff. Maybe they've made their own issues, but voters should not be interested in their issues. Jobs is the #1 issue, if you don't have a jobs plan, stay home.

Are we the only country in the world that spends an insane amout on time concentrating on the next presidential election? The election is one and a half years away, for god's sake. Yet, we talk and debate politics as thought the election is next week. Lighten up, for god's sake, and find other ways to entertain yourself. It seems to me we should start thinking about politics about 90 days before the election date.

I still just simply want bush and cheney arrested for high-treason, and crimes against humanity, mass murder of innocent Iraqis, conspiracy, fraud, wall-street collusion, big-oil collusion -- and a few other odds and ends of criminal behavior.

Then, we can start talking about 2012.

Just take this last item: In the last two years we have accumulated national debt at a rate more than 27 times as fast as during the rest of our entire nation's history.
Over 27 times as fast. Metaphorically speaking, if you are driving in the right lane doing 65 MPH and a car rockets past you in the left lane.

27 times faster, it would be doing 7,555 MPH!

So, tell me again, what is it about Obama that makes him so brilliant and impressive? Can't think of anything? Don't worry. He's done all this in 24 months -- so you'll have one year and ten months to come up with an answer.

Every statement in this is factual and directly attributable to Barrack Hussein Obama. Every bumble is a matter of record and completely verifiable.

These Republican candidates, and closet conservative Obama, are all pretty much clones of each of other. It's more deregulate business but regulate American's freedoms with this bunch. Come Novemer 2012, there is no lesser of two evils; just two big evils on the ballot.

The "Gross Odd People" (GOP), and the "Really Not Competent" (RNC) are off track politically. They are running into a bigger poltical buzz saw in 2012, and they are so mentally ill that they do not realize it yet. Little "Timmy" Pawlenty from the cartoon South Park is running into trouble with his exciting personality. Not really America! Now "Timmy!" Has a real economic problem with his for the rich only economic policies in Minnesota. "Timmy!" Just clearly stated in his yawning yelps that he would kill Medicare if he ever became President. "Richie Rich Ryan" is very busy pushing the elderly off an economic cliff. Now "Richie Rich Ryan" has just been given a big poltical "Thumbs-Up" from "Darth Cheney." AKA. Dick Cheney. I am sure his political son "Darth Rove." AKA. Karl Rove. Is right on board with his GOP/RNC father. Hey America! Did you hear? "Nutty Newt" is going to buy expensive jewelry for "Puppet Palin" and "Bitchy Bachmann." Yes America! The GOP/RNC "Carnival Of Clowns" is off track, and heading for the poltical, economic, social, and cultural cliff. This is fact!

The only person who can turn this country around at this moment is Colin Powell. A retired four-star general in the United States Army, I would trust and believe in whatever he brings to the tables. Mr. Powell is the person who should be running things. But if you want to continue with this quote reality politics and complaining. Continue to vote and put up with all the drama. Reality shows belongs on television and not in politics.

                                                        What will happen first.

If Obama is elected for a 2nd term.

                                                        1. The Economy is back to normal.

                                                        2. Unemployment drops to 5%.

                                                        3. The Cubs win the World Series.

Man, I really got excited when I saw the title Sarah Palin kicks off.... If only it had ended there. If this mindless imbicile is ever in ANY form of high authority I would embrace the 2012 prophecy of doom. I am not a left wing liberal nor a right wing extremist. I am a sane and rational human being that already had to endure eight years of leadership from a retarded cowboy. I couldn't handle a scarecrow too.
