Santorum to make candidacy official on June 6

A source close to the campaign tells First Read that former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum (R) will formally announce his presidential bid on June 6 from southwestern Pennsylvania.

Santorum has already formed his presidential exploratory committee.

Why southwestern Pennsylvania? It's where his grandfather worked in the coal mines after leaving Italy.

"This location is significant because when Se.n Santorum's grandfather left fascist Italy, he came to this country for America's freedom and the opportunity our nation afforded him," the source says.

June 6th?

In the early morning hours of June 6, 1944, Americans received word that three years of concerted war efforts had finally culminated in D-day--military jargon for the undisclosed time of a planned British, American, and Canadian action. During the night, over 5,300 ships and 11,000 planes had crossed the English Channel and landed on the beaches of Normandy. The goal of every soldier and civilian involved in that effort was to drive the German military back to Berlin by opening a western front in Europe.

Not even Jesus would recommend a pretty boy with an empty head but good hair for dogcatcher, let alone put him in a LEADERSHIP position. He would be the perfect puppet though IF the sting pullers can prop him up long enough to win. Problem is he's gonna have to stand in the middle and his cheerleaders all lean far RIGHT, like himself.

Not gonna happen. Though I'd love to see who he might pick as a running mate (Bachman?) and watch the beat down at the debates he would get from OBAMA. It is who he would surround himself with that scares me cause I live in his state. He ain't very nice or squeaky clean.

A very important op-ed in today's NYT by former President Carter, wherein he agrees with President Obama's position on the Israel/Palestinian conflict. This is why I really really despised the GOP's horrific outcry over what President Obama said, especially Mitt Romney.

No where did Mitt mention his concern for the future of the Palestinians. Why not?!

The world is changing, and it's changing fast. We are beginning to all come together. And hope for millions of people is now real, because of President Obama's wish for everyone to live a free life. To them hope is not a word to be ridiculed. It's real.

I wish the media had spent more time on President Obama's speech yesterday at Westminster. It was a remarkable speech.

People like Santorum can't relate. They are so used to militaries deciding people's lives. It's wrong. We need to give people themselves a chance for hope. And we can offer them our hand.

That's what democracies do. Or rather, that's what democracies are supposed to do.

No longer can we "choose" sides in this conflict. We must be cognizant of everybody's rights and their chance for a prosperous future.

This is what leadership is. The GOP is still living in the past. Every single one of them.

_____________________________________________________________

For both of our nations, living up to the ideals enshrined in these founding documents has sometimes been difficult, has always been a work in progress. The path has never been perfect. But through the struggles of slaves and immigrants, women and ethnic minorities, former colonies and persecuted religions, we have learned better than most that the longing for freedom and human dignity is not English or American or Western -- it is universal, and it beats in every heart. Perhaps that's why there are few nations that stand firmer, speak louder, and fight harder to defend democratic values around the world than the United States and the United Kingdom.

And yet, as this rapid change has taken place, it's become fashionable in some quarters to question whether the rise of these nations will accompany the decline of American and European influence around the world. Perhaps, the argument goes, these nations represent the future, and the time for our leadership has passed.

That argument is wrong. The time for our leadership is now. It was the United States and the United Kingdom and our democratic allies that shaped a world in which new nations could emerge and individuals could thrive. And even as more nations take on the responsibilities of global leadership, our alliance will remain indispensable to the goal of a century that is more peaceful, more prosperous and more just.

Also, since you're on line, this is a little off topic, Santana was booed

Carlos Santana took the microphone and said that he was representing all immigrants. Then Santana added, "The people of Arizona, and the people of Atlanta, Georgia, you should be ashamed of yourselves." In a perfect display of Gov. Nathan Deal’s Georgia, the cheers quickly turned to boos. Yes, Carlos Santana was booed on Civil Rights Day in Atlanta for talking about Civil Rights.

Why how surprising: Pat supports Jimmy Carter. Huh.

Of course Pat is also a staunch Obama supporter, and a self professed hater of all things republican. Again, huh.

So Pat, what is your take on Reid and the rest of the democratic party's walk back of Jimmy and Obama's position regarding the 1967 boarders?

Pretty striking, right? After all, the Schumers and DWS's all seem to disagree with Obama and Carter. They also seem to be very concerned with fund raising.

But do tell Pat, why did you feel the need to cut and pate crap from the NY Times? Are we too stupid to find it on our own, or are you just that benevolent, and feel the need to guide us poor souls to the media YOU like?

How about this Pat - you treat us like adults capable of finding our own information and stop with the silly cutting and pasting. Or would you prefer we all simply import what we feel is warranted to this site? After all this article is not really about Israel, right?

Ok then.

Beverly,

Words can't describe my feelings toward Lawrence O'Donnell and the work he is producing. His rewrite segment is must see. It's intelligent, truthful, educational. He is a very learned individual. I adore his program.

I'm sorry to hear that Santana was booed. We both know that people with darker skin colors have not been accorded the same respect that whites have. This has to change. And I'm hoping that leaders of all democracies realize this. Only then will the people themselves realize that we all inhabit this planet. And that we are all deserving of a decent future, regardless of the color of one's skin.

The future of the world lies with its immigrants. Just like it always has. You see the photos from Europe. The leaders and their people are looking toward our President for inspiration. One woman, as President Obama was leaving Westminster said yesterday - Must we say goodbye to you?

Our President is raising the bar. Not just for you and for me. But for everyone, in every corner of the world. These photos below are truly lovely.

We do this knowing that the West must overcome suspicion and mistrust among many in the Middle East and North Africa -- a mistrust that is rooted in a difficult past. For years, we've faced charges of hypocrisy from those who do not enjoy the freedoms that they hear us espouse. And so to them, we must squarely acknowledge that, yes, we have enduring interests in the region -- to fight terror, sometimes with partners who may not be perfect; to protect against disruptions of the world's energy supply. But we must also insist that we reject as false the choice between our interests and our ideals; between stability and democracy. For our idealism is rooted in the realities of history -- that repression offers only the false promise of stability, that societies are more successful when their citizens are free, and that democracies are the closest allies we have.

A year or so ago, Santorum brought forth legislation that would levy a fee, paid to a commercial concern for boaters, including families on small runabouts, a fee for receiving safety related weather information on their marine band radios. This information is provided free by the national weather service, but Santorum was trying to grease the palms of the Weather channel. For that he wins c--ksucker of the year, and hopefully no more elections.

What's new in Obama's stand on the 1967 boarder? Do you realize that's the position of most leaders around the world and even previous presidents of the US. somehow you'll have listened to Bibi's own statement to the congress, could you tell the difference in both leaders positions? Do you realize that there's no difference in both speeches rather it's the wordings that differs. hey pal, 57% of Israelis approves of Obama's speech. how about that?

Oh.....is this the usual bashing just because it's Obama that said it....right. A little research and truth telling will do.

Pius - how about you wander on over to Huffington Post and see what that ultra-conservative republican Alan Duerswich (?) has to say about Obama and his insane demand about 1967 borders.

Dude, he blew it, he knows he blew it, and now all the other dems are fighting against him. You did see what Reid (not a jew) said, right? Was Reid "bashing" or is that just something you say about republicans? Silly right?

Or is it you think all these democrats are "bashing" it only because it came from Obama? Might it be possible that it's just plain dumb?

Look my man - I'm not a jew but I have a lot of jewish friends. Many are ardent Obama supporters. Or I should say were. You see they are now confronted with this, and they cannot explain it away - Obama picked sides, and it was not theirs.

And Pius, I don't know how much you know about American jews and their staunch support of all things Israel, but this has them in fits. They are PISSED.

Oh and Bev. we all know you cut and paste because you are incapable of formulating your own, independent thoughts. You therefore have to literally copy others. It is very sad.

But the point is we all can read. We all can go to other sites is we choose. Don't you think it is disrespectful to the author of the article to cut in other articles from other sources.

As most of you folks are not republicans, you wont care about this news.

I read that former NY Governor George Pataki is considering a run for President. A liberal to moderate republican, he was a multi-term governor of that state and from all accounts did a real good job. He's a fiscal conservative and not a social conservative. For him to be elected twice in NY, a liberal state he must have done well. If he does throw his hat in the ring and gets some national name recognition, he may be a serious and viable candidate.

Groucho - Yeah, he would be an interesting candidate. I would like to see some real choice, not the jokes that seem to be the focus of the Republicans, Romney excepted. I wouldn't vote for Romney but he is intelligent.

For everyone who is foaming at the mouth about Obama's 67 war comments, go back and listen to what he actually says, not the sound bite. Then listen to Israel's response. Not far apart. They both basically say start with the 67 borders and negotiate from there. Personally I think Israel should give it all up but they'll go down first. Again, a majority of Israel's citizens agreed with Obama's comments. Of course part of that is that they probably actually listened to it in it's entirety rather than the Fox sound bites.

Back to the subject of Republican candidates, the vast majority so far seem to be planning campaigns based on hate speech, including Palin and Bachmann, both of whom I loathe. Again, a real candidate, smart enough to discuss issues, would be welcome. Unfortunately the rabid segment of the right won't allow such a person to be nominated.

You have Newt, Sarah, Mitt, and Rick how can you miss, all you have to do is beat is an inexperienced community organizer. When you tell working people who have paid in all their life your are canceling their SS, and medicare they will know you are the serious, and brave kind of candidate they are looking for. Don't let any polls bother you, people know that turning our backs on the old and sick is the right thing for this country, stick to you guns, we just need a leader to carry the message. We need a republican leader that can make us feel good about doing bad things. I've never understood why conservatives are opposed to clean air and water. Possibly some don't realize their anti-regulation and pro-business (leave them alone) agenda has anything to do with clean air and water. The problem is they have been convinced that regulating emissions will cost them money without a thought that failing to regulate emissions could cost their health and maybe their life.

No candidate, right or left, is without their flaws but this crop of GOPTP hopefuls comes with serious baggage. The reason for the baggage is, in most instances, not the candidate's fault but rather the extreme ideological litmus testing that creates it. Today's GOPTP must not and cannot ever have had a single idea or vote that was opposite of their party platform. This rigid ideological purity testing is destroying the republican party.

      Oh Frothy,

      Please run. Please run.

You are your own worst enemy and there is enough videos (youtubes) out there that America will deem you unqualified. His rhetoric is more damaging than Palin and Bachmann put together. Just ask the voters in Pennsylvania.

If you have not already please Goggle "Santorum"...it is not for the weak but very informative.

Mitt Romney and Tim Pawlenty have said nice things about the House GOP budget plan -- but still slightly distance themselves from it -- Rick Santorum is embracing it fully. What loser! First he was associated with the Ensign affair and now he opens his mouth and inserts foot! This is going to be a Great GOP primary!

That's why the people of Pennsylvania got rid of him! They were sick of the stupid stuff that came out of his mouth.

Wow, I finally read all these posts to get a hint of what the Senator's platform might be.

Are these all the clowns on first read that embrace Obama's policies?? What a circus.

The republicans are in a feeding frenzy - feeding on themselves.

MMMM Santorum: The often frothy mixture of fecal matter and lube resulting from enthusiastic anal copulation. (Google it) About as appetizing as the former Senator from Pennsylvania.

Jody, you are exactly right. Not only their health and life but also the children and grandchildren they are always screaming about (re: the debt).

What kind of life will their grandchildren have when there is no clean water and the air is so polluted that you can't go outside?
