First Thoughts: Who wins (and loses) if Palin runs

Who wins if Palin runs: Romney and Obama… Who loses: Pawlenty and Huntsman… Does Palin moving to AZ raise Team Obama’s chances of being able to play in the state in 2012?... A reality check: Palin’s polarizing poll numbers… Libya and the G8… Wrapping up yesterday’s Senate budget votes… Dems continue to talk up NY-26… Biden brings up bin Laden in NH… Obama’s turnaround in FL?... And Newt and T-Paw are in NH, while Romney’s in IL and Bachmann is scheduled to be in IA.

*** Who wins (and who loses) if Palin runs: By now, you’ve probably heard about the increasing signs that Sarah Palin might run for president after all. A new two-hour movie about her record as Alaska governor will premiere in Iowa next month; she’s bought a home in Scottsdale, AZ; and she’s hired back two top aides. What’s more, the New York Times says, Palin “is expected to resume a schedule of public appearances soon — perhaps as early as this weekend — to raise her profile at a moment when the Republican presidential field appears to be taking final form.” While we’re still unsure she actually runs (it could simply be a gambit to get into the political spotlight), a Palin bid would have a profound effect on the rest of the field. For starters, it would benefit the slight front-runner Mitt Romney, because Palin would take attention away from other challengers (like Tim Pawlenty and Jon Huntsman). It also would probably unite the GOP establishment around Romney.

*** Raising Arizona? So the happiest person about this Palin news is Romney. The second happiest? Well, that would be Team Obama. In fact, if there is one state Plouffe/Messina/Axelrod would like her to move to, it’s Arizona -- which would remind voters there about Palin’s controversial “blood libel” remarks after the Giffords shooting, versus the president’s own Tucson speech. Make no mistake: Arizona would be a tough state for Obama in 2012 (example: the Justice Department’s suit against the state’s immigration law). But if Palin becomes the face of the Republican Party in the state, it won’t hurt Team Obama to play there. They've been looking for a way to rally their base in Arizona to begin organizing the state, and Palin hands them an easy opportunity.

*** Palin’s polarizing numbers: A final point about a Palin bid: She has an awful lot of hurdles to overcome to reach the White House. Our April NBC/WSJ poll found her with a 25%-53% fav/unfav score, with just 9% viewing her VERY POSITIVELY (her lowest number here ever in the poll) and with 41% viewing her VERY NEGATIVELY (her highest number here). In addition, her fav/unfav among independents is 19%-54%, while it’s 48%-25% among Republicans, 63%-7% among Tea Party supporters, and 6%-83% among Democrats. In other words, she’s adored by conservatives, but not by anyone else. But check that last number on Republicans on more time: One in four REPUBLICANS have an unfavorable view of her. That's not just a hurdle; it's a potential roadblock.

*** Libya and the G8: Overseas at the G8, which begins today in France, perhaps the biggest news behind the scenes is the (slight) push by Sarkozy and Cameron to have the U.S. play a larger military role in Libya. But here’s the White House’s position: They are doing everything they said they WOULD do from the get-go. To go any further and to ramp up the U.S. role in the military effort would then mean the White House would need authorization from Congress. To be clear, for the role the U.S. is playing NOW in Libya, the White House believes they do NOT need a legal authorization from Congress. But if the military piece got bigger, then it's unclear. And consider this: Do congressional leaders want to have this vote? While Obama, Boehner, Reid, and McConnell could probably get an authorization passed through Congress, none of them wants to deal with that right now. And it comes as a growing number in Congress -- think Sen. Jim Webb -- believe the legislative branch is ceding its role on military matters to the executive branch. As the Times writes, “Several lawmakers from both parties on Wednesday accused President Obama of violating the War Powers Resolution by continuing American participation in NATO’s air war in Libya without Congressional authorization, but they struggled with the question of what Congress can or should do about it.”

*** Budget battles: One day after the NY-26 special election, where the Ryan budget plan was an issue, the Senate yesterday rejected that very plan by a 40-57 vote, NBC’s Libby Leist notes. Five Senate Republicans voted against the measure: Scott Brown, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Rand Paul, and Olympia Snowe. In a separate vote, the Senate rejected President Obama's budget, 0-97. (Democrats say they voted against it, because Obama himself has moved past the budget and called for more cuts.) Leist adds that the chamber also voted down GOP Sen. Pat Toomey’s budget (by 42-55), as well as GOP Sen. Rand Paul’s budget (7-90). Regarding the Ryan vote, there weren’t any big surprises: Dick Lugar voted for it (given his GOP primary), while Brown (who potentially faces a competitive re-election fight) voted against it.

*** Dems continue to talk up NY-26: Speaking of the NY-26 race, DCCC Chairman Steve Israel appeared on Meet the Press’ weekly “Press Pass,” and he said the result made 97 GOP members lose some sleep that night. Israel and DSCC Chair Patty Murray hold a pen-and-pad session at 10:15 am ET to spin that special-election victory.

*** Biden brings up OBL in NH: Don’t miss what Vice President Biden said about Obama and 2012 at a New Hampshire Democratic dinner last night. The New Hampshire Union Leader: “The 2012 election is about the future and about restoring the American dream, which is why Biden said he partnered with Obama in 2008. It is about strength in leadership, according to Biden, describing Obama as a leader with a backbone.  Americans watched as Obama executed what he called the ‘boldest undertaking of a single event in modern history,’ referring to Osama bin Laden's death.  With his future on the line, Obama didn't hesitate, said Biden. ‘And, that was the last piece of the puzzle that had to be put in place,’ added the vice president.”

*** Obama’s turnaround in FL? Perhaps it’s a sign of Obama’s bin Laden bounce -- or the fact how fickle polls in the Sunshine State can be -- but a new Quinnipiac Florida poll has the president with a 51% approval rating in the state (up from 44% in April), and it has 50% saying he deserves re-election (vs. 42% a month ago).

*** On the 2012 trail: Gingrich and Pawlenty are in New Hampshire… Romney discusses jobs and the economy in Chicago, IL… And Bachmann is scheduled to address the Polk County (IA) GOP (but the Patriot Act votes might complicate her schedule).

Countdown to Iowa GOP straw poll: 79 days
Countdown to NV-2 special election: 110 days
Countdown to Election Day 2011: 166 days
Countdown to the Iowa caucuses: 256 days
* Note: When the IA caucuses take place depends on whether other states move up

This has been an interesting last 2 days in this country. It started when the Democratic challenger Ms. Hochul defeated the incumbent by 48% to 43% in the NYS Congressional Special election in NYS District 26. This was a district that since 1857 has had only 3 democrats and has over 30,000 more registered GOP than Democrats. This victory is a comment on how America views the Republican Medicare repeal Bill, PERIOD. The people do not like where the GOP is going with this bill and they have spoken and I suspect more will fall the same way. It was reported yesterday that there are at least 97 more congressional districts that are more moderate than NYS 26 that are controlled by the GOP. We only need to take 25 or so of those in order to recapture the House.

The Senate voted NO yesterday on the Republican Bill by a vote of 57 to 40. Every single democrat voted no and were joined by 5 Republicans (2 up for re-election) that see the handwriting on the wall. They are running away from the Republican Bill except for the 40 that voted yes. These Senators and all the House Congressmen that voted yes are going to have to defend their YES vote to “repeal Medicare and Medicaid in future elections.

Ryan is claiming the Bill was defeated (as with the NYS 26 election) because of “scare tactics”. OMG, anybody remember all the town halls where the GOP stood up and said that President Obama was going to “kill grandma”? Even though that argument was totally debunked time and time again they kept on saying it and they are still even using that line today, 2 years later. Well it appears that the democrats took a page from Karl Rove’s handbook and threw it right back into the faces of the GOP/TP. The only difference is that the Democrats did it better and the argument is based in fact and has not been debunked. Seniors are going to loose Medicare coverage as time marches on simply because they will not be able to afford the premiums and if they do not have insurance some of them are going to die because they just will not have insurance. Tens of thousands of Americans are dying each year because they do not have adequate insurance. Just look at AZ months ago. Under the Republican Bill this number will grow. That is a fact and CBPP, CEPR, and a bevy of economists say that is going to happen under the Republican Bill.

Ryan made the comment yesterday on MSNBC that his changes to Medicare (and Medicaid) will save them for current beneficiaries and future generations. He also was adamant that there would be no changes to these programs. Well his statement was debunked, no surprise there.

His plan will re-introduce the donut hole that will cost over 4 Million Seniors about $2.2 Billion Dollars just in 2012 alone. It will roll back the wellness visits (you know the annual physical exams) to none. The cost for this another $110 Million but more importantly the lost opportunity to catch illness early on before it becomes a death sentence. This is a part of reducing the long term costs, something this Bill does not address at all. And on Medicaid, the Republican Bill eliminates that portion of the current HCR Law that expands Medicaid to an additional 34 Million Americans. These people will now be denied coverage and yes, some will die.

Get a load of this!

This coming from the SAME party that voted to OBLITERATE Medicare & Medicaid!

Rob Woodall Won't Give Up Government Health Care 'Because It's Free' (VIDEO)

WASHINGTON
-- Moments after preaching extreme self-reliance to one of his constituents, a
Georgia Republican told a gathering in his district that he will continue to
rely on government-subsidized health care "because it's free."

The
exchange continued. In video provided to HuffPost by another constituent,
Woodall was asked why -- if he believes in such self reliance -- he doesn't
forgo his government health care plan.

"I
have a question about taking care of you. You have government subsidized health
care, but you are not obligated to take that if you don't want to. Why aren't
you going out on the fee market in the state where you're a resident and buy
your own health care? Be an example," said a constituent in the new video.

"Your
question is," Woodall responded, "my government's willing to give me
lots and lots of stuff for free and why don't I take it?"

Freshman
Rep. Rob Woodall, who served as chief of staff to his predecessor, made
national news earlier this week for comments he made, captured on video by Patch.com, to a retired constituent who told him her
company does not provide retiree benefits.

"Hear
yourself, ma'am. Hear yourself," Woodall told the woman. "You want the government to take
care of you, because your employer decided not to take care of you. My question
is, 'When do I decide I'm going to take care of me?

Keep Crying And Lying

Rep. Paul Ryan (R., Wis.), who authored the Medicare plan, said Democratic attacks on his plan were effective in Tuesday's election to fill an open House seat near Buffalo. "They are shamelessly demagoguing and distorting it," Mr. Ryan said, adding that Republicans would have a better chance to make their case over the next 18 months

Who doesn't LOVE the sweet smell of desperation in the morning? LMFAO!

*insert snark*

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report) – In what political insiders are calling an unprecedented sign of desperation, the Republican National Committee today sought to attract new candidates for the 2012 presidential race by placing an ad on Craigslist, the popular online classified advertising site.

“We have been concerned about the way our crop of candidates has been shaping up for some time,” said RNC chairman Reince Priebus. “But I think the straw that broke the camel’s back was when the pizza guy said he was running.”

Mr. Preibus said that party insiders have been bemoaning the absence of “grownups” in the current Republican field, “which is why we placed an ad in Craigslist under ‘Adult Services.’”

“We said that we wanted someone tough, who was well-versed in obedience and discipline,” he said. “We need someone who can whip us into shape, even if it’s painful – quite frankly, that’s what we’d love to have done to us.”

While response to the Republican ad has been slow initially, Mr. Preibus said that the Party did receive a reply from one candidate, a woman named Madame Shoshondra from Somerville, Massachusetts.

In her response, Ms. Shoshondra, who has never held elective office, said, “I know when you’ve been naughty and will make you pay for it until you scream for mercy.”

First Thoughts: Overseas at the G8, which begins today in France, perhaps the biggest news behind the scenes is the (slight) push by Sarkozy and Cameron to have the U.S. play a larger military role in Libya.

MSNBC.com:

Libya is set to make its biggest overture yet to foreign powers that are backing rebels and laying siege to the embattled government of Moammar Gadhafi, a British newspaper reported on Thursday.

In marked contrast to previous bids to end the fighting, there is no mention of Gadhafi's fate in the country's future in a letter to be sent to foreign governments, according to The Independent.

Instead, the letter puts forward the idea of a cease-fire for both sides overseen by the United Nations and African Union, unconditional talks with rebels and a new constitution, the paper reported.

This is starting to come to roost. It still amazes me the number of politicians that get up day in and day out to just outright lie then deny it when faced with a video clip or a piece they wrote or a radio show that says the exact opposite of what they now want to claim as the truth.

People are listening and every day a new lie is exposed. Just look at T-Paw this week and others.

They used to be able to get away with it in the old days before the Internet and the global news sources. Today they cannot but keep trying anyway.

Although, I must admit that I was a bit surprised to see the Patrick Ewing, former All-Star centerfor the New York Knicks was accompanying President Obama on his trip to Europe!!! I was also surprised to learn that Mr. Ewing was a member of the LGBTQ community and was able to come out of the closet on such a large international stage like this!!! Truly Mr. Ewing has the courage of the immortals to be able to do this!!! Bravo to you, Mr. Ewing!!! Keep reaching for that rainbow!!!

The day after Sarah resigned her governor position, I was relatively sure she would run again. I also assumed she would move to the lower 48. I guess Arizona qualifies. In this day and age, she won't have to dump Todd. He can stay in Alaska, fish, ride dog sleds and whatever.

If Sarah runs, I doubt if Bachman will. It is looking like the Tea Party has their sights (cross-hairs) on Mitt Romney. They have no qualms of ignoring the GOP/TP eleventh commandment. "Do not speak ill of a fellow Republican." Question is will the Tea Party consolidate around Sarah. I suspect they will as there is no where else to go. Can Sarah beat Romney? Maybe, but doubt it.

I must say I'm looking forward to watching the GOP/TP primaries and convention next year. A ticket there might be worth more than the Superbowl.

US Navy: Great post. This Ryan budget was ill-conceived from the get to. The media gave it legs initially because they hadn't read it. They just assumed because it was a GOP plan that it would be you know - a responsible budget. For some reason the media believes the GOP have it over the Democrats on responsibility. What a joke.

These GOP members are brutal and I hope they lose the House. They're not only incompetent. They are in government simply to cater to the wealthy instead of working Americans.

That's the worst kind of government possible. Wake up America.

Who knows. Maybe someday these House members will stand up to the wealthy. But don't count on it. They're not only cowards. They have zero integrity.

They're doing what they have always done. Blame this group. Blame that group.

Anyone but the wealthy. Cowards. The wealthy always cause recessions. Always.

You would think the Ryans and Cantors of the world would learn a thing or two in their lifetime. They haven't.

Hopefully, many of these Republicans-Tea People will be packing their bags and heading home after the 2012 election.

Feisty, Bev, Navy .... Amen, Brother and Sisters, AMEN!

From the moment it was announced, the Ryan budget proposal was a shocking LIE.

First of all, it purported to address a desperate need to cut deficits and debt - but it did NOT. Instead, It added $6 trillion in deficits over the next decade, and didn't come into "balance" for another 60 years! LIE NUMBER ONE THAT RYAN HOPED NO ONE WOULD NOTICE.

Second of all, it purported to be a fiscal game plan for the future. It is NOT. The budget isn't about money, it's about SHUTTING DOWN THE GOVERNMENT. Using de-funding and other financial tactics is the TOOL for this vicious, ideological attack on the nation. LIE NUMBER TWO THAT RYAN HOPED NO ONE WOULD NOTICE.

Then, yesterday Ryan just went forth and lied his head off about the NY 26 election and the Medicare slashing aspect of his plan. As seen elsewhere on FR/FT, fact-checking Ryan's remarks showed him A LIAR WITH HIS PANTS ON FIRE.

Republicans claim their fear of "voter fraud" - virtually non-existent fraud, of course - is why they sponosred so many new attempts to suppress and turn away voters in 25 states. What the Republicans and their Tea Party masters need to fear about that topic is that AMERICAN VOTERS NOW KNOW THE "FRAUD" WAS THE GOP/TP AGENDA.

Who wins? Who loses? Sarah Palin is a joke being played on the US Electorate, and although we have too many ignorant voters who vote their emotions based on being, conservative in religion, government, finances, entitlements, fears of anyone looking or thinking differently, rarely travel out of their comfort zones, zealotry in their devotion to anything that is not liberal and or being a Democrat. I do believe the majority of voters are sane, rational people.

Her supporters have made her extremley wealthy, as she plays to their paranoia and feeds their feelings of hatred to all things not of the 19th century, I have no doubt she will do so again and because of that I think the country will lose. However, if she makes it through the primaries, she will come to a crashing end in the general election.....and go on to make more money.

Just stock up on popcorn, they may be the eventual winners.

It amazes me that some people don't understand that the Tea Party is really a miniscule movement, exerting far more influence than it deserves.

In the 2010 elections, only 22% of the voters attributed their ballot choices to Tea Party positions - while 56% said the Tea Party didn't matter at all.

In Congress, Tea Party officeholders represent one-eighth of the total House membership, and barely one-fifth of the GOP membership.

In the NY 26 election, the big surprise is NOT that the Tea Party candidate drew a miniscule 9% (the guy's one of those perpetual candidates - hold an election, he's got the runs). Nope the big surprise is that after drawing substantial double-digits polling numers a few weeks before the election, most of those supporters abandoned him - for the DEMOCRAT.

The Ryan budget FRAUD has poisoned the GOP/TP electoral well.

You know, where she reports some incredible story about the right-wing and then that look of disbelief crosses her face. It's that, "I can't believe this is happening. Are people really so stupid that they can't understand they're supporting the people who are trying to enslave them?"

Well Feisty, believe. The right-wing thoughtbots are memorialized in films such as "Invasion of the Body Snatchers". They are The Borg. They are today's G.O.P. They are real. Believe!

When you can persuade a voter to cast a vote for his or her own destruction, you are facing an enemy whose mindset is no different from a suicide bomber - very scary, but very believable.

So, I am figuratively smacking you on the forehead, and I say unto you, "Verily Feisty, believe." Oh yeah, don't try to persuade the thoughtbots to change their way of thinking. They don't think.

AWWWW C'mon MSNBC/First Read....Who wins? The American people because with "death panel" Palin in the race and the Medicare poison pill fresh in everybody's memory the President will win re-election in a landslide.

Who loses? The GOP/TP and it's about time, before they can do any more harm to our country.

Their biggest damage comes with the polarization of the electorate. That will kill this country once and for all if we can't lower the tone and start talking politely to one another.

With a Palin candidacy the President is assured of re-election, the losses of November 2010 could be mitigated, if not erased entirely and the President would be in a position to shore up the HCR and start dealing sensibly with the deficit.

C'mon guys, you're supposed to be the experts here.

1. Wis. District judge has overturned the Walker law re: collective barginning. On Wis.! 2. Palin is just looking to get back in the spotlight for guess what? MONEY, honey! 3. Florida is turning blue again. Why? Because Gov. Scott's radical agenda has everyone running scared! His approval rating is now at 29%, that must be the 29% of the wealthy here in sunny Fl. 4. Ryan's insistence on eliminating Medicare and giving it to the private ins. companies, will likely cost him his congressional seat, the Dems have a strong young guy, (can't remember his name offhand, senior moment?), and he is already polling ahead of Ryan. I think the people have truly awakened!

A new movie about Sarah Palin as Alaska's governor?

Halfway through there's an intermission, and they never restart the movie after that

Exactly commonsense!

      OH, MY!!!

It would appear as though I made a most grevious error in my post from earlier this morning!!! Apparently, that was NOT Patrick Ewing, former All-Star center for the New York Knicks, that accompanied President Obama on his trip to Europe wearing that white gown, but it was, in fact, First Lady Michelle Obama!!!

I send my most heart-felt apologies out to Mr. Ewing and his family!!! He is, to the best of my knowledge, not a member of the LGBTQ community!!! Once again, Mr. Ewing, I offer my apologies for any erroneous statements on my part!!!

Thank you, Gingerbread, for bringing this extraordinary mistake to my attention!!! Kudos to you, my delicious treat of a friend!!!

USNDV-R, Great post. If I may, I would like to add that even though Ryan is complaining about Democrats demonizing his plan, this is just more Republican tactics in an attempt to distract and deceive. If the average American applies their own personal experiences with the insurance industry they can rationalize for themselves what Ryan's plan will bring, denial of claims, reduced benefits, and rate increases. The insurance industry has demonized Ryan's plan. Not with words but with historical trends and greed. Democrats know it. Conservatives on the hand deny what they see with their own eyes and believe what ever their party tells them.

It's so refresing for me to be a conservative while watching the hateful liberals launch into a feeding frenzy. Gotta hand it to the liberals, they have the market on hateful remarks... you all must be proud!

From the article: One in four REPUBLICANS have an unfavorable view of her. That's not just a hurdle; it's a potential roadblock.

If by chance Palin does get the nomination, that dynamic will change dramatically, but I digress. She hasn't made any announcement.

For as much as you liberals hate her, you absolutely think she doesn't have a chance... Politics are fickle. Remember I said that in 2012.

I never said Palin had a chance. To clarify what I said... Politics are fickle. Uh... wait.. that wasn't a clarification, that's what I originally said. I don't know how to make it more plain.

Just the mention of Palin's name sends liberals into a feeding frenzy. I wonder why. If she was so inconsequential, liberals wouldn't even bat an eyelash, eh? Not so much. When confronted about Palin, liberals start their ranting... some even pull out saved lists of things and post them... things that aren't really important, but liberals simply love sharing their hatred towards the woman.

I particularly find the whole thing amusing. Palin is a fledgling politician but the liberals, by their reactions, treat her like she's a real threat.

It's about the entertainment they provide. Let's talk amusing, ok? You know it and we know it, she is no threat. Still waiting for a republican to come forward, sing her praises and support her. Just stand back and let the woman speak. To someone other than FOX, please, if she is up to it. The only reason Sarah would run is so she can stay politically alive long enough to increase her bottom line. If she fades into the background, no more speaking engagements or books. It has absolutely NOTHING to do with patriotism or new ideas.

US Navy Disabled Veteran - Retired: To quote you below:

"His plan will re-introduce the donut hole that will cost over 4 Million Seniors about $2.2 Billion Dollars just in 2012 alone. It will roll back

the wellness visits (you know the annual physical exams) to none. These people will now be denied coverage and yes, some will die."

Outstanding comment!! Isn't it amazing how the Republicans never discuss the the true costs of their programs? This is so typical of their slanted propaganda (which some voters of recently elected Republican Governors are now seeing in their own States).

I have heard things just as bad on Fox as well. The difference is that I never heard any one on Fox apologize.

In any event, what he did was wrong and he has to pay the price, what ever that may be. Too bad, I kinda liked his show most of the time. He can go off on a tangent though.

Then every FAUX noise commentator who has ever said a derogatory thing about left-wing women should be fired. They did fire Glenn Beck, but not because he repeatedly said that liberal women were unattractive.

@ Ben ~ I have heard those clips myself, Ben, several times.

Similarly, Rush Limbaugh should be fired from his radio show for asserting as fact that "every" liberal women has had several abortions -- another clip I have personally heard -- not to mention the myriad other disparaging things he has said about liberal women.

Need I go on? What an uninformed hypocrite you are, White Collar. And you, too, Ben. Misogyny only counts when you want it to. From reading your posts, I highly suspect neither of you is ordinarily a defender of women or women's rights.

For example, how do you feel about Planned Parenthood?

And would either of you care to comment on Tim Pawlenty's pardon of a serial sexual molester because he married his 14-year-old victim and supported the child he had fathered?

            http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2011/05/23/tim-pawlenty-wiped-a-serial-child-molesters-record-clean-in-2008/

Or do you also need to know that the same guy, having been pardoned by Pawlenty, was free to later molest the 9-year-old daughter from that union and put her on birth control when she was 15 so he wouldn't get caught?

I wonder if they used Planned Parenthood. And I what Rush Limbaugh would say about that?

            http://jezebel.com/375225/rush-limbaugh-women-love-hillary-because-theyve-had-two-or-three-abortions

"You have to understand the mindset of a lot of these feminists and women...These women have paid their dues. They've been married two or three times; they've had two or three abortions; they've done everything that feminism asked them to do. They have cut men out of their lives; they have devoted themselves to causes and careers. And this — the candidacy of Hillary Clinton — is the culmination of all of these women's efforts."

If this is what you blindly support, then your own misogynist slip is showing and you're certainly no better than Ed Schultz.

My favorite story is Glenn Beck saying that it's okay that liberal women are unattractive because when they get to heaven, they'll all find their special someone anyway. As if none of them have such someones on earth, or that a truly desirable "special someone" in heaven would be someone who didn't find you sufficiently attractive on earth.

Just another eternally angry and out of control Lib calling a Conservative a derogatory name. Happens all over the place, even here on this very blog. The source of this behavior is the Libs total lack of communication skills and frustration with not being able to understand and debate the issues of the day. Rather than educate themselves, they lose their composure and strike out in anger. Again, we see it every where, even here on this very blog.

My fellow libs may not agree, but as Democrats, friends can respectfully disagree. First, is not a reasonable to compare Fox News and MSNBC. Fox News standard is so low, their commentators can and do say almost anything and are not punished. MSNBC does have a higher standard and what Ed said was totally unacceptable. Professional news commentators cannot let there emotions control their mouth. When that happens, they fall from the ranks of being a professional.

Every woman in America can and should be offended by his remarks. There is no place for it. Likewise I see it much too often in politics. Someone says something stupid, apologizes, and all is supposed to be forgotten. That is wrong.

This is the second time ol' Ed said something totally outrageous. Like in baseball, three strikes and you are out.

Are you kidding me? What planet are YOU living on? That's exactly the OPPOSITE of what Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, BillO Reilly, and Sean Hannity do every single day.

Besides, can you REALLY separate speech from the speaker? Isn't a person defined by what they say? Except for Newt Gingrich, of course, who claims that any attempt to define him by what he says is a lie.

            Sheesh.

@Anna -- I believe that a statement attributed to Rush that you linked is an ignorant statement by the talk show host. Again, post a link to Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh actually saying those things -- not a liberal leaning reporter's posting or writing it. Thanks.

P.S. -- Since I was suspended for a day for calling someone and "ignorant toad" and violating the COH, I have reported your calling of me an "ignorant tool" to Newsvine. So we will see if there is equal justice on this site.

There is always an excuse provided by the Left for their members behavior. Much tolerance and leeway is provided (three strikes, you’re out, for example) for a Lefties bad behavior. The Left can never judge their sides bad behavior without providing some concocted and distorted moral equivalence of someones behavior on the Right. Just read the posts on this thread. It's about Scultz, but the Left wants to talk about Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Hannity, anything but Schultz, just to deflect the issue being discussed. It is never the Lefties fault, there is always an excuse, and there will always for forgiveness by the Left for one, two, three or more instances of bad behavior by their own.

I don't think you comprehend my post, what with your response being a prime exemplar of the malady that plagues this so-called "political forum"

That kind of stuff is UNACCEPTABLE no matter WHO is speaking...but folks here are either defending their guy or finding examples of similar idiocy from the opposition

(as unlike you, I don't see a dimes worth of difference between the two sides here, rhetorically, intellectually or politically. To me Ed Schultz and Rush Limbaugh occupy the same silly universe)

Refute the speech without denigrating the speaker refers to this esteemed forum where every reply seems to include a personal snark or insult, and political debate is reduced to "your side hates America, sick people, the poor, capitalism, unions" etc..

So, sorry you missed the point but thanks for inadvertently illustrating exactly what I was referring to on this blog...

It’s not a woman thing, it’s a Liberal thing. The Liberals are protecting their idea that somehow, but only in their minds, they are morally superior to everyone else. Liberals cannot admit mistakes or hold their own accountable for either themselves or one of their own. Their thinking is, “How can we be wrong, we’re superior to everyone else”. So rather than be critical of one of their own, they’re critical of others. You see that deflection all the time. It’s nothing but Liberal Group Think.

Really? And then he followed it with the FoxNews Ratings #'s, too? WOW!

I guess he is a TRUE Republican, Quantity over Quality, I Got Mine Screw You mentality.

Hey, Ben, here's a news flash, Fox Viewers are LESS informed on ACTUAL facts. Care to explain why THAT might be? oh and here's your PROOF!

Comedy Central viewers are MORE informed than Fox viewers, suhprise, suhprise, suhprise! (channeling my best Gomer Pyle)

              http://people-press.org/report/319/public-knowledge-of-current-affairs-little-changed-by-news-and-information-revolutions

I rest my case. You Foxies have quantity – because you can centralize in one location – but your quality pretty much sucks. PS. The rest of us seek MANY options for information, thus the dilution.

Here's a more recent study. The phenom is so prevalent that the study is now recurring. Go figure!

@Ben ~ Just what one might have expected you to say. Attack the source when you can't attack the substance. You KNOW he said it, you won't admit it, and you know it's indefensible, but you just can't bring yourself to say it. Ben: "Man up??" Seriously? LOL...I'm getting the strong impression you don't think it's called "mysogeny" unless someone you disagree with politically said it--exactly the charge you're throwing at others (for the record, that's called hypocrasy.) Here's just a sampling of Ann Coulter's own mysogeny which you apprantly don't find problematic:

"If we took away women's right to vote, we'd never have to worry about another Democrat president. It's kind of a pipe dream, it's a personal fantasy of mine, but I don't think it's going to happen. And it is a good way of making the point that women are voting so stupidly, at least single women." June 2009

"These broads are millionaires, lionized on TV and in articles about them, reveling in their status as celebrities and stalked by griefparrazies. I have never seen people enjoying their husband's deaths so much." -on 9/11 widows who have been critical of the Bush administration

in a May 2003 interview with The Guardian, Coulter said:[61]

...It would be a much better country if women did not vote. That is simply a fact. In fact, in every presidential election since 1950—except Goldwater in '64—the Republican would have won, if only the men had voted.

@Feisty (oh I mean Clara) -- I didn't defend anything that was said or not said. All I said -- and you know this -- was that he can't be fired and the only way to get off the air is for radio stations and advertisers to abandon him. They are the ones defending him due to the almighty dollar. I just want to hear him make that statement via a link to his broadcast. Then I'll know it is true.

Also, my link was not on the viewer ratings. It was a link on being the most trusted news source if you would have bothered to look. MSNBC came in in the bottom half.

@Anna -- I question the source when I can't verify what was written. I don't know any such thing. If I actually hear him make that statement, then I will say it was wrong. Don't worry. I don't believe you will be suspended because I suspect justice is not even handed here.

I like Ed Schultz's show but what he said was inexcusable; it doesn't matter how passionate one feels, or that words were said in anger or frustration, there is never a reason to be vile or hateful--regardless of which side of the aisle does it. If his suspension becomes permanent, that's the price one pays.

MSNBC has higher standards than FOX. That should not be the case. FOX and those stations who carry Rush Limbaugh's show should be held to the same standard. FOX has hosts who regularly make disrespectful, disgusting, hateful and vile comments about our President, our First Lady, democrats, women, minorities and whoever else they feel the need to attack. Stations which carry Limbaugh should suspend his show a few times; FOX should suspend Hannity, O'Reilly, Beck and any others as well. Right or left, there is never an excuse for bad behavior.

The difference I see in this topic between liberal and conservatives posters is stark. When FOX or Limbaugh make vile comments, rarely does a conservative poster say the person should be suspended or taken off the air; in fact, the almost immediate response is to throw in a mention of Keith Olbermann or someone else they don't like which is as good as defending the offending person. Yet today, you see liberals commenting that if MSNBC fires Ed Schultz for his vile comment on the radio, we accept that as necessary and appropriate. As much as I like Ed's show and appreciate his passion, he crossed the line and when he did, he became no better than Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity and others--no better than those about whom Ed has complained when they made vile comments. What I do appreciate is that Ed came on air last night and apologized, he has called Laura Ingram to apologize and his apology was not the usual "if I offended...." line we often hear but saying flat out he was wrong, what he said was vile, inexcusable and offensive and he offered no excuses. For that, Ed Schultz, deserves credit for taking personal responsibility for his actions without blaming anyone else, without excuses. In this day and age of media hyperventilation, that's worth something. I wish Ed Schultz the best and trust he has learned an important lesson.

Here's another example of the "respectful" Rush Limbaugh for you, Ben ...

"I'm a huge supporter of women. What I'm not is a supporter of liberalism. Feminism is what I oppose. Feminism has led women astray. I love the women's movement — especially when walking behind it." --Rush Limbaugh, responding to criticism that he is sexist and defending his selection as one of the judges at the 2010 Miss America Pageant, "Fox News' Fox & Friends," February 3, 2010

              http://politicalhumor.about.com/od/rushlimbaugh/a/limbaughquotes.htm

And another source for my original quotation:

              http://mediamatters.org/mmtv/200804010009

On the April 1 edition of his nationally syndicated radio show, Rush Limbaugh said of a potential Hillary Clinton presidency, "[Y]ou have to understand the mindset of a lot of these feminists and women. They think they're owed this -- just like Obama supporters think they're owed this." Limbaugh continued: "These women have paid their dues. They've been married two or three times; they've had two or three abortions; they've done everything that feminism asked them to do. They have cut men out of their lives; they have devoted themselves to causes and careers. And this -- the candidacy of Hillary Clinton -- is the culmination of all of these women's efforts." He further stated: "And if it gets stolen from them, in their minds -- not actually stolen, but if the country or if the Democrat [sic] Party rejects this wonderfully great, lying woman in exchange for a rookie, radical black guy who can't tell the time of day, they are going to be so miffed. They are going to be so upset."

              And a third one:

@AP -- I agree that Ann Coulter's characterization of women as "broads" and her statements you point out are outlandish and I don't agree with them. She has many other statements that are equally as offensive. But the point is she can't be fired unless Fox (which I would support a call not to use her) doesn't ask her to come on; people don't buy her books; organizations don't ask her to speak and the news media doesn't report what she says.

                Ben et al,

See Sean Hannity Defend Ted Nugent saying he would like to put his gun in Obamas mouth and that Hillary Clinton is a bitch on August 27th 2007. He also suggested Barbara Boxer might want to suck on his machine gun and that Clinton might want to ride one into the sunset. Did you somehow miss O'Reilly and the entire Andrea Mackriss sexual harrassment lawsuit settlement. Or for and oldie but a goody go back to the Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting 2003 June update on O'Reilly racist comments he also tosses in the random muslim women are the ugliest in the world to cover all bases in misogny. July 21st 2010 both Hannity and Beck defend Andrew Breitbart and allow him unlimited time on the Shirley Sherrod fraud you get racism and sexism in a twofer. Put Anne Coulter and Sean Hannity into a search engine and watch dozens of youtube videos with Hannity mentally masturbating over Coulters salacious quips about both Clintons, Liberal Women, agreeing that the 9/11 widows were staying in the spotlight for the money. O'Reilly unapologetically promoted violence against George Tiller and his and Hannity's books besides being ghost written to about a sixth grade reading level and being on the bookshelves of mass murderers and cop killers are repleat with vulgarities about both Clintons, Muslims, All liberals, Liberal women, Nancy Pelosi and Barbara Boxer have been raked over the coals for face lifts or their looks. Put O"REilly, Beck or Limbaugh vs Barney Frank in any search engine and you can read or watch videos chock full of snarky homosexual jokes. There are literally hundreds of FOX hosts anti gay, anti Obamas (both), anti Clinton (both), giving literally unrestricted and never questioned access to Anne Coulter, Michelle Malkin, Andrew Breitbart,James O'Keefe and his fake videos, Ralph Reed and dozens of others they are really not hard to find. Go to any search engine and then go to the FOX lineup and enter the show or host of your choice start with the AM nitwits for pure down home stupidity and move through the day getting doses of fantasy and insanity from Beck, Out of context quotes, homphobia, narcissism, racism, violent antiabortion imagery lies and ignorance to guests, stalker producers and visceral meanness go to O'Reilly and finish with a dose of Hannity to give you equal parts of all.

                Ben:

When a person makes an insulting remark like Shultz while working for someone else, we'' they suffer the consequences.

As others have tried to tell you, the statement was made on his syndicated radio show, just like Rush's comments. So all of your defenses of Rush Limbaugh's behavior apply equally to Schultz.

On the other hand, I never said I agreed with him, or that he was right, or that his suspension by MSNBC was unfair. Quite to the contrary. I'm very disappointed, and unlike some here, I believe that it affects his ability to be effective on his television show as well. This puts it into play, in my opinion.

So I'm no hypocrite, Ben. But there are plenty of them out here attacking Schultz today who have never criticized those on their own side for doing things that are, at best, similar, and at worst, much more egregious. If that's not you, then I apologize, but it sure took you a long time to say so.

                OK, plenty of examples of right-wing hate speech have been offered, Conservatives have countered with "yeah, Liberals are actually worse." Predictable, but not terribly productive. Here's the comment that interests me;

whatever happened to freedom of speech?

Yes, the First Amendment guarantees you the right to say whatever you wish.

It doesn't guarantee the right to a radio or television stage from which to spread hate.

It doesn't guarantee the right to a multimillion dollar contract for doing so.

It doesn't guarantee the right to sponsorship that buys time on the airwaves for such activities.

That's why my favorite approach for the radio and TV haters is boycotts like this one. http://stopbeck.com/2010/03/28/washington-post-200-companies-boycott-glenn-becks-program/

I've written any number of letters directly to sponsors complaining about sponsorships of these shows. Apparently I'm not the only one, because more than one of these sponsors has disappeared.

                Thetotas,

You have issues! Nothing was said about race and it never enter my mind. Thanks for pointing it out what a racist you are. Have a nice day.

If you're willing to defend someone know who and what you're defending. I happen to know what Ingramm has said and continues to share her view about minorities...

If you THINK that calling me racist means something to me or sparks anger for me to defend what I've said then you are sadly mistaken.

If a minority mentions anything about a person that happens to be white that has insulted them is considered racist--then I don't give a damn what you think about me. That trick doesn't work here because I KNOW what I'm and I don't have to prove anything to anyone!

Even if everyone agrees some comments should not be said, it is a lot worse when some of the cruel SOBs attack the innocents When a person attacks they better be prepared for a counter attack. Let`s leave their family out of it. When Imus was fired his Co. was embarrassed as they should be for a senseless attack on innocent girls. Laura Ingrams is no innocent If she can`t take it then don`t dish it out.

                  Hey, Ben:

THE TOP TEN RACIST RUSH LIMBAUGH QUOTES

                  1. "Have you ever noticed how all composite pictures of wanted criminals resemble Jesse Jackson?"

                  2. "Right. So you go into Darfur and you go into South Africa, you get rid of the white government there. You put sanctions on them. You stand behind Nelson Mandela — who was bankrolled by communists for a time, had the support of certain communist leaders. You go to Ethiopia. You do the same thing."

                  3. "Look, let me put it to you this way: the NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons. There, I said it."

                  4. "The NAACP should have riot rehearsal. They should get a liquor store and practice robberies."

                  5. "They're 12 percent of the population. Who the hell cares?"

                  6. [To an African American female caller]: "Take that bone out of your nose and call me back."

                  7. "I think the media has been very desirous that a black quarterback do well. They're interested in black coaches and black quarterbacks doing well. I think there's a little hope invested in McNabb and he got a lot of credit for the performance of his team that he really didn't deserve."

                  8. Limbaugh's many attacks on Obama.

Limbaugh has called Obama a 'halfrican American' has said that Obama was not Black but Arab because Kenya is an Arab region, even though Arabs are less than one percent of Kenya. Since mainstream America has become more accepting of African-Americans, Limbaugh has decided to play against its new racial fears, Arabs and Muslims. Despite the fact Obama graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law school, Limbaugh has called him an 'affirmative action candidate.' Limbaugh even has repeatedly played a song on his radio show 'Barack the Magic Negro' using an antiquated Jim Crow era term for Black a man who many Americans are supporting for president. Way to go Rush.

So Rush Limbaugh has managed to make racist attacks on four of the most admired and respected people of African descent in the past one hundred years, in Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Colin Powell and Barack Obama. He has claimed that Joe the Plumber, who isn't even a plumber is more important in this election than Colin Powell, a decorated military veteran who has served honorably in three administrations. How can the Republican party stand by this man and let their candidates appear on his show? Rush Limbaugh's comments are so racist, they're funny, in a Borat, Archie Bunker kind of way. What is not funny is the millions of dittoheads who listen to him, who take in and re-spout all the racist rhetoric that he spits. Limbaugh's statements are echoed in the racist, angry Palin/McCain supporters who shout 'kill him,' 'terrorist,' 'communist,' 'traitor,' 'socialist' and 'off with his head.'

                  9. "We need segregated buses… This is Obama's America."

                  10. "Obama's entire economic program is reparations."

                  Bonus quotes:

"Let the unskilled jobs that take absolutely no knowledge whatsoever to do — let stupid and unskilled Mexicans do that work."

"A Chavez is a Chavez. We've Always Had Problems with Them"

And if you go to the website "newsone.com/nation/casey-gane-mccalla/top-10-racist-limbaugh-quotes/", each quote is sourced.

Remeber when we so quickly throw out the hypocrite label. I think we should remember that we don't know each other and don't know what is in each other's hearts. Some of us on the left and right have different ideas about policy and government responsibilities. No matter what we say for many we will not change their views. I thought this site was about discusion and debate.

While public persons (politicians) and their ideas are more open to critique; I don't understand the need to attack our fellow posters. I differ strongly with some posters on this fourm and have ideas that some agree with and some do not. I understand and accept that. What I don't understand or condone is the constant and increasing name calls and attacks against fellow posters.

                  This forum is going downhill.

Personally, I think the appology that Ed gave should have been enough. I don't think MSNBC should suspend him.

Laura is a talking Slut. She omits important parts of a story, condeming President Obama for not running right over to Joblin MO after the Tornado, HE CALLED THE GOV AND THE MAYOR, did she say that NO.

She spews @!$%#, she is a Coulter wanna be and FOX NEEDS TO FIRE HER ASS> PERIOD

MSNBC needs to bring ED BACK NOW, at least he did give a heartfelt appology, even tried to call her.

@dman -- I don't agree with any of those statements made by Limbaugh. But my original point was to only point out that Schultz has an employer to which he has to answer to on his conduct no matter where he is. The only way to get rid of Limbaugh is to have radio stations and advertisers stop airing the broadcast and advertising. It is the media -- the radio stations -- that will not do anything because it is a tremendous revenue stream. NOW and other women organizations need to show outrage on this like they do on other matters.

@MLJ -- did you say the same thing when Beck said something construed as racial about obama? Probably not. What's good for the goose . . .

I agree Yellowdog. What I find outlandish are those who insist on "one upping" when someone posts a disagreement. It's immature. Make your point constructively and move on. It's unfortunate some here are incapable of doing so. There are times when the discussions posted are more respectful, despite their disagreements. Other times, some resort to bashing others posting here and is beneath us all.

I rarely visit this or any other opinion site as I've learned you can't fix ignorance when ignorance doesn't want to be fixed. Some here (both liberal and conservative) feel they are right and anyone who disagree with them is wrong and evil. Those who feel that way never recognize they are that way. It's also impossible to show them the error of their ways. I respect someone who admits they are wrong, after all, no one person is perfect and we all make mistakes (whether we're willing to admit it or not).

That said, Ed has admitted his mistake. It was inexcusable, but to demand he be fired is just as inexcusable. Again, we all make mistakes and none of us would ever be able to hold a job if we were fired for every single mistake we made in our lives. You denounce the mistake, but you also move on. Dwelling on such matters only destroys character.

Sarah obviously enjoys the spotlight and the circus she creates but She knows, her advisors have told her, you have no chance. She has a very loyal far right, uneducated trailer park following but she is way to disconnected from reality and she's only a couple of notches below Paris Hilton in the why are you famous category.

What she will do is cost the legitimate Republican 10% of the base which means Obama has a huge advantage. My guess is the GOP knows this and a lot of candidates have no intention of being a part of the circus that would cause only to be rewarded with landslide Obama victory.

A Short Story Filled with Crass Political Stuff

Slowly and carefully I raise my head to peek out of my foxhole. And what do I see? Leftists to the left of me, leftists to the right of me. In front and back as well. Good grief, I'm surrounded! And there's Feisty with MY sword. How the heck did she get that? Good thing the blade has been dull of late, else she'd chop off my weary head. Then hold it up by the few hairs I have left to the cheering leftist mob, as Dr Ron gleefully pronounced me dead as a doornail.

But these bloodthirsty brutes don't have the best of me just yet. Because in my pocket is a well worn copy of the Ryan plan. Yes, the very same accursed plan that condemns all who support it to eternal damnation – or even worse, electoral defeat. The fear of the left for the truths contained therein is palpable, and they will do anything to avoid falling within its thrall. And like vampires who shy from the cross, leftists must avert their eyes to avoid the barest glimpse of this evil Book of Truth.

So it won't be long before they mount a kool-aid fueled assault on my foxhole to try and do unspeakable harm to me and this precious Book. But as I prepare for this fate, the world suddenly changes. In the sky above the clouds part and what do I see? By golly it's a bunch of folks parachuting towards me! What's up with that?? As they land I can see their faces. Good grief, it's Newt and Mitt, then Pawlenty, Santorum and Bachman too. Even Ryan himself, good gracious what a surprise! They gather round me and Newt speaks first.

"We had a mosaic of intelligence saying you were in a bind, good thing we showed up when we did."

"And I'm sure glad you came, I was about to become toast."

"No need to worry about that now. Say, who's that redheaded babe over there with the sword?

"Don't ask. By the way I see you're all here, but where's Sarah?

"Don't ask. We got a chopper coming in a few minutes so gather your gear. You still got the Book?

"Yes I do, been guarding it with my life.

"Is it an original edition or paperback?"

                      "Original. Signed and numbered too."

"Then it's a good thing we got here when we did. We have reason to believe they were planning a grand Book burning."

"I see you've changed your mind on this, no more with the right wing social engineering, eh?"

"Don't get smart with me, pal. I reserve the right to be as undisciplined as I damn well please and say anything that pops into my mind, particularly on national TV."

"Truce. We're on the same side."

"Yo Paul, tell this guy we're good buds again."

Ryan comes over. Gives Newt a 'here we go again' look. Then turns to me:

"Bless you, my son. Your dedication in protecting the Book has not gone unnoticed and you will be richly rewarded. Not in this life of course but, you know, somewhere down the road."

Ahh, visions of vestal virgins and life size Hillary dolls danced in my head. Surely that was the reward of which Ryan spoke. But no time for such thoughts now, I can hear the chopper coming in the distance. And suddenly there it was, hovering above us then slowly descending. Imagine my surprise when I noticed the pilot was – Mike Dukakis!! And still wearing that goofy hat from a long ago election!

"Are you kidding me," says I. "No way I'm gonna trust this guy to fly us out of here."

Mitt comes over to assuage my fears.

"When Daniels dropped out we needed a replacement, and Mike was available. Besides, flip-flopping is a time honored tradition in this business. I've done it myself a few times so cut the guy a break. Anyway, all we had to do was promise to get him a new hat if he signed up for this mission."

For chrissakes, I think to myself, the best and brightest Republicans gathered here but we have to rely on a Democrat to take us out of harm's way?? Whoever wrote that into the story must be running out of ideas. Be that as it may, the chopper lands and we all pile in. As we take off, there's high fives all around. And Pawlenty actually brought some booze so we're all in good cheer. And then, and then….and then Sarah appears! She was in the cockpit all this time keeping an eye on Mike and comes towards me and says:

"I hear you're one of my biggest fans."

"Yes indeedy, you gonna run or what?"

"Well, I got that 'ole fire that's a burnin' a hole in my belly that's fur sure. And this mamma grizzly just might take the plunge, I haven't decided yet."

"So who do you think your biggest competition would be?"

"Oh it would be that Bachman bitch. I do all the work to pave the way, I've been taking the arrows for the last few years, I've energized the party and now she wants to swoop in to take all these cubbies away from their mamma. That's really lame. If I had a sword I'd cut off her you know what – both of them. BTW, I hear you carry a sword, mind if I borrow it for this chore?"

"Sorry, left it on the battlefield, it was captured by the enemy."

"Well, better they get that than the Book. But good to see ya. Gotta go now and make sure Mike doesn't get lost. Or take a left turn"

And so it went, we landed safely and our adventure was nearly over. There were limos lined up to take their precious cargo to their homes. Except for Paul, he had a chariot. And yours truly? Well I hitched a ride with Michelle. She was very enagaging and we made pleasant small talk. But then she looked me straight in the eye and said:

"I saw you talking to that Palin bitch. Now you must know, I've got a chance to win, she doesn't. So why waste your time with her, she's yesterday's news."

There was some wisdom in her words, to be sure. But things are not quite as cut and dried as she says.

"There's a clue store just down the street, you can drop me off there," says I. "You might even want to come in and browse for a while, maybe check out Sarah's Nook."

"Thanks for the invite, but I've no desire to check out Sarah's clues. In fact, I'm surprised she has any at all. Can she still see Russia from her porch?"

Such a catty comment, I thought to myself, and was tempted to mention her dumb-dumb about Concord but demurred.

"Here we are, thanks so much for the ride," says I.

"Before you go, riddle me this. If not me, then who? Mitt and Huntsman are borderline RINOs, Newt stepped in it right out of the chute, nobody knows T-Paw, Rick is a proven loser, Herman isn't on anyone's radar screen, few take Sarah seriously, and Jeb, Chris and Paul are pipe dreams from the right wing kool-aid crowd. So I ask again, if not me then who?"

"Money can't buy the grip Sarah holds over so many," says I. "And the strength of her bond is not easily broken. So it remains to be seen whether she will use her considerable power to pursue the big prize."

A dark look descended over Michelle's face.

"So you're still in her camp, eh?"

                      "Yes."

"Your loyalty is commendable, but misplaced. The MSM and the left would savage her and take us all down in the process."

"Perhaps. But she's a choice, not an echo. And in your heart, you know she's right."

"The last candidate who said that was massacred."

"True, but he led the way for others to follow."

"So, you'd prefer to make a principled run and lose rather than take a more pragmatic approach that could win?"

"Running on lies and distortions cheapens the prize. Just look at NY-26."

"Maybe YOU should take a look it. The Dems did what they had to do to win, the truth be damned. Winning isn't everything in this game, it's the ONLY thing."

"I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that point," says I.

"Fair enough my friend, farewell. And kudos for keeping the Book out of those grubby leftist hands."

                      "That was my pleasure."

"BTW, what happened to your sword?"

                      "Lost it on the battlefield."

"Sorry to hear that, I'm sure that makes you sad."

"Not nearly as sad as you would be if I still had it."

"What the heck does that mean?"

                      "Don't ask."

And so our tale comes to an end. The Book is safe and sound, locked in a secure undisclosed location. My rescuers are back on the campaign trail, regaling the throngs with their derring-do. And Sarah is still undecided, while Michelle plots her next move. As for my erstwhile sword, Excalibur it's not but that blade is imbued with a certain powerful clarity. And whosoever shall wield it now, best do so with great care – lest the truth enlighten the unsuspecting user, and force them to confront the errors of their misguided ways.

Not sure what all that was about from Bill, Feisty, but was pretty bored by it. As to Palin running...I always believe that when she does anything it is with a glance at how she can better her bottom line. She is a grifter, and the thing to remember about grifters is that they want money.

Or, she could just be delusional enough to believe that she belongs in the White House, which would be a sad state of affairs indeed.

I have to wonder if our President's improving numbers in Florida is a reflection of Floridian's unhappiness with their Governor? Could it be a lesson was learned?

In any case, this is going to be fun! Hope Palin jumps in the race.

I assume most of you know that Fairfax, VA, is home to not a few members of Congress but also many Hill staffers. It also hosts numerous executives and senior personnel from various trade associations, NGOs, and of course lobbying firms.

I rather like the town - used to be a very, very nice restaurant with an outstanding piano bar there - haven't been back to Fairfax in quite a while, tho, and who knows if that joint is still open. Same with a similar establishment in Tyson's Corners, nearby.

Shame about Bill's sword. Its best use would have been for him to fall on it, like disgraced commanders and warriors of the days gone by. If you have it, Feisty, I recommend using very thick gloves to handle it, and test for poison. Or maybe e.coli ....

Thanks for the clarity. Something tells me Bill would be fun to hang out with at a piano bar; if one could keep the conversation off politics. I've been reading about Ryan's budget on the non-partisan site factcheck.org. Sounds more like a Stephen King novel than King Arthur's tales.

Reading #1 in this thread unfortunately brought to mind a space opera paperback cover, probably done by Boris Vallejo -

Sarah Who? in a skimpy half-breastplate of polished armor and metal corset, and of course thigh-high pirate-style boots (tops turned down) that anachronistically have stiletto spike heels.

                      And then I threw up.

Sorry, but the American people are on to you frauds.

Is that so? Surely you've seen this little snippet that ABC News caught:

Bill Clinton: "So anyway, I told them before you [Paul Ryan] got here, I said I'm glad we won this race in New York. I hope Democrats don't use this as an excuse to do nothing."

Paul Ryan: "My guess is it's going to sink into paralysis is what's going to happen. And you know the math. It's just, I mean, we knew we were putting ourselves out there. You gotta start this. You gotta get out there. You gotta get this thing moving."

Clinton then told Ryan that if he ever wanted to talk about it, he should "give me a call." Ryan said he would.

So Navy Vet, when it comes to Medicare and other entitlements, wanna take another stab at who the real frauds are?

You thought Democrats like Bill Clinton didn't know we have a huge federal deficit?

I'm all in favor of Congress taking action to reduce the deficit, but I want it to be pragmatic action. The Ryan budget strikes me as an ideological exercise, divorced from the real world and not aligned with our national priorities (hurting the elderly and protecting the profits of the private insurance companies ? no thanks.)

What's good for the goose . . .

                      Why would you think that?

Actually I have complained to Fox often about the @!$%# they spew, if MSNBC says something offensive YES I complain to them too.

PS: I don't watch Fox, my husband will until I come in and bitch about it.

LOL. It's pretty obvious that she won't run for president. She will only entertain just the idea of running to keep herself in the limelight and on the news and of course the media keeps covering this has been. Sara Palin and her daughter already got their own reality tv shows, book deals, paid speeches...... of course they win. Why give it all up? After all, Sara Palin quit every single government job that she was signed up with. What makes you think she will finish the job as President?

It doesn't take much imagination to see that she will establish residency in a state known to cheer her on, with an eye on a seat in Congress. Oh brother. Well, if Bachmann can do it, why not Palin?

In the meantime, as she panders to the fringe, she will look to Beck's example - he was pulling down $35 million a year until FOX canned him - he got too crazy even for them. She'll just see where the wind takes her on this.

We'd all be losers if the politically ignorant, Ditsy Twit were to become Pres. The same goes for her being in the Senate. She is just a runaround babe seeking the limelight. A woman like her gives a bad name for her gender when it comes to intellectual knowledge outside the home (where she seldom is anyways). But then, there is the fact that she is known for walking away from responsible jobs, anyways. Many people in Alaska did and still do not care for her, or the work that she tried to do. Too bad for the rest of us that she didn't stay in Alaska. Do you think she'll still be able to see Russia from her backyard or front porch swing? LOL !!

These people will now be denied coverage and yes, some will die."

Outstanding comment!! Isn't it amazing how the Republicans never discuss the the true costs of their programs? This is so typical of their slanted propaganda (which some voters of recently elected Republican Governors are now seeing in their own States).

I mean it...if Mike Huckabee doesn't get the nomination this time around, I'm not voting Republican. I can't stand the blatant corporate greed and screw all the little people attitudes that the Republican party represents these days. Modern Republicans anger me just as much as, if not more than, the socialist-pandering Democrats. I wonder who the Constitution Party's candidate will be...

Ok...we've had our fun little political votes on the budget, trying to get the other guy "on the record" so that we can make cute little attack ads during the next election. Now, how about rolling up your sleeves, making some tough bipartisan decisions, and getting to work. These politicians can't think of anything but expanding their power and their next re-election campaign.

The reason we can't get anything done in Congress is because tough decisions need to be made. When one party takes a stab at making these tough decisions (Health Care, Medicare, SS, Budget, etc) it's too easy for the other side to sit back and slam the proposal without really coming up with a solution of their own. Why? Because that's how you win elections. It's easier to attack the other side and say outlandish things. The GOP did it with HealthCare in 2010 and the Dems appear to be doing it with the Budget / Medicare in 2012. Congress needs to grow up.

Ah, Grimey.....you might like one of my current bumper stickers: "A Politician Thinks Of The Next Election / A Leader Thinks Of The Next Generation". Too many politicians, way too few leaders. Back in the olden days (i.e., before you were born :) ) it used to be at least a little closer. But don't despair - in no time at all it'll be tv campaign ad season, and you'll see every politician on the planet (well, all the male ones, anyway) rolling up those sleves in the ads so they can pretend they're just one of us "average Americans". Too bad that after the election, most of them will roll those sleeves back down, straighten their ties, and go back to being empty suits. We really should demand better.

                          Good Morning Frank:

There is a lot of truth to what you say, but the medicare issue is a big deal as it impacts the lives of millions of seniors. Most seniors in their 80's are capable of shopping, taking care of themselves, but they have significant trouble figuring out vouchers, private insurance rules, how to get their best deal.

Today I read that Republicans have decided not to retreat on the privatization of medicare. They are going to double down and not drop this issue. In fact, they are setting themselves up for a big loss in the next election. Cantor and Ryan want this fight. And it is a fight they will lose.

I think part of the change from years gone by is that the politicians are more afraid of challenges from the wings of their own party than they are of challenges from the other party. How else to explain the House Medicare vote, since most House incumbents are alway re-elected? I was really surprised at the Senate Republicans voting for the Ryan budget.

Frank--I agree that both parties do this grandstanding but my sense of things is that the Democrats eventually sit down and compromise while since 2008 the Republicans do not.

The problem I have with the Republicans' privatization plan for Medicare is this exact experiment failed to control costs when it was attempted with Medicare Advantage. Medicare Advantage was another Republican idea, to give seniors a "choice" by paying private insurance companies to offer them an alternative to government run Medicare. The result was, Medicare Advantage cost tax payers billions more for the same services. It's the same principle as privatizing military supply services in Iraq: the result of that experiment was huge cost over-runs. Something tells me, the real objective of the Republicans' plan to shoot more money to corporations, at the expense of tax payers and consumers.

Where can I get one of your bumper stickers?

                          Ron,

Many people touch on the issue of vouchers, and fail to mention that anyone that is a senior (today), or becomes a senior within the next ten years, is not impacted, they retain the current Medicare benefits. Those of us that are not quite to the threshold of 55 will need to become familiar with, and prepare for (under Ryan's plan) the process of Medicare vouchers. Ultimately JoAnne and Frank are absolutely correct, the dearth of leadership (on this or many other issues), and the inability to focus on anything other than the next election makes it virtually impossible for our politicians to actually reach a consensus of opinion. Until such time as the politicians we elect get off their fat duffs (both parties), and address the problems of this nation, we the people will be underserved.

Now why on earth would we need to prepare for "Ryan's plan" when it has no chance whatsoever of becoming law? Medicare will survive this attack at dismantling it, as it has countless times since it's inception. This time is the weakest attack yet (seniors under the bus so we can afford additional corporate tax rate cuts? A plan that the CBO says radically HIKES the deficit?) There's a reason Ryan's plan has become yet another circular firing squad for the Republicans and it's not because it's too bold. It's because its too stupid.

I have heard both sides, and health-care is a big issue, but Ryan`s plan is so wrong, Obama`s plan is so much better and leaving medicare as it is even better than that. SS the same I paid into this for almost 40 years and to change the rules now is just wrong. Most people complained when the bankster got giant bonus`s, but republicans said it was right because it was what they were promised, Well this is what I was promised and I want it. Until something better comes down the pike leave it alone.

I would like to see the gang of five proposal. If it isn't better than the Debt commission budget, I say put the Debt commission proposals to a vote.

                          Living in LA -

At 59, I'm in the group supposedly "not impacted" by the current Medicare discussion. However, after what I've experienced in the last six months since I found myself the power of attorney and medical proxy for my mother following my step-father's death, I would have to agree with Ron wholeheartedly. Mom is 79, wheelchair-bound in an assisted living home after falling and breaking her hip last fall, and since suffering a stroke at age 71 - just one year past the new proposed retirement age - she's suffered increasing vision and memory problems. She can barely manage the tv remote, let alone the paperwork, etc. involved with a voucher system and having to choose a provider. Of course, presumably, as her POA, that responsibility would still fall to me if we were under the proposed changes - as it also will to the children of the elderly in the future. The trouble is, at the rate our society is aging, the "children" of the elderly are liable to be elderly themselves in the near future and still caring for their parents - I work with a woman who'ss 77 and still making decisions for her 96-year-old mother in a nursing home. And I've already been overwhelmed, almost to the breaking point, at learning about all the expenses that even our current Medicare DOESN'T cover for the elderly - and from my own experience with private insurers, I have no reason to believe that my voucher options with them would be even that good. I don't claim for a minute to know what the answer is - but I do know that a lot of people currently under age 55 are going to be in the same position I am someday - and I'm not sure anyone can really "prepare themselves" for that kind of future, no matter how hard they try.

On a lighter note - hey, this is the second time this week someone's asked me where I get my bumper stickers! Here's what I told him:

"Hmmm, can I answer that without being collapsed for advertising? Okay, let's try this......I don't work for them, have no financial stake in them, and I'm not in any way, shape, or form endorsing them or implying that either you or anyone else reading this should ever buy a single thing from them.....but I myself just happen to have gotten a couple of really cool bumper stickers, t-shirts, etc from a place whose first name is northern and their second name is sun. Unless you intend to find them online, in which case it's all one word followed by .com.......but you didn't hear that from me, okay? :)"

Always good talking to you, LA.

Amy, thanks for pointing out that the Republican plan to privatize Medicare is yet another in the buffet line of Conservative ideas that have already failed, yet they refuse to abandon.

In spite of the rhetoric privatization has rarely failed to deliver inferior results at increased cost. Here in Iowa adventures in privatization have included mowing of highway rights of way that now cost us twice as much for half as much mowing, and private cleaning of rest areas that led to such a high level of complaints most of the original contractors had to be fired and replaced with contractors doing the same work at well above the cost at which state workers kept the rest areas nearly spotless.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for injecting a note of real world experience into this Medicare discussion.

Paul Ryan strikes me as someone who is completely out of touch with the realities of elder care. Maybe his wife is the one cares for the aged relatives in his family.

Having gone through a decade of my parents' decline, and all that entailed, I look at what is facing me, a single woman with no children and little savings, and I wonder how the heck I will afford the thousands more dollars private insurance will cost me in my old age, not to mention the fact the Republican legislature in Maine just made it legal for private insurance companies to charge more for the elderly and those in rural areas. The Republicans think free market solutions are a panacea for every problem, but I look at reality and that I don't see that is true.

I agree, but she is deeply unpopular within her own party, and I imagine even she is capable of reading the polls (which I assume is her motive behind getting a "movie" of her life out right now...to try and move those numbers and convince SOMEONE she's electable.)

The folks on the right need to sit Sister Sarah down and be truthful with her, and tell her that she is not qualified to be President. For so many tea people to follow her and think that she would even be elected President is kind of scary.

If Sarah was nominated as the Republicans choice for President, that would be a real laugher, especially in debating the President. In such a debate, there would be too many big words for her to right on her hand. However, she would bring some great material to SNL.

Watching the news this morning I was reminded of WHY we continue to talk about Sarah Palin, and why she's still considering a run for President. In film footage of Palin speaking the dias was wallpapered with her sponsor--Americans For Prosperity. The Tea Party front group of the Koch brothers is still one of the 800 lb gorillas within the GOP and clearly the Kochs believe in her. That's enough to make her a factor in the fight for the GOP nomination--no matter what's obvious to thinking people.

Which party's philosophy is more inline with the above?

Pride is excessive belief in one's own abilities, that interferes with the individual's recognition of the grace of God. It has been called the sin from which all others arise. Pride is also known as Vanity.

Lust is an inordinate craving for the pleasures of the body.
Anger is manifested in the individual who spurns love and opts instead for fury. It is also known as Wrath.
Greed is the desire for material wealth or gain, ignoring the realm of the spiritual. It is also called Avarice or Covetousness.
Sloth is the avoidance of physical or spiritual work.

I feel offended by the comparision of religion and politics...this is no place for it.

Since none of us has met Jesus he shouldn't be attempting to compare him to us or us to him.

Your thoughts are not my thoughts, your ways are NOT my ways....

Did not mean to offend anyone, especially one so principled as you; and I really mean that!

I have heard, read and seen that this great nation is a "Christian Nation", so I wondered just what pricipals should this nation live by and then asked questions.

I was hoping that a conversation would happen, and if so we may have a better understanding of our different views on some things.

Steven, I actually see a lot of those attributes in people of both parties. I happen to be a somewhat rare "animal" here in Texas: A member of a Southern Baptist church who votes mostly for Democrats. I proudly put signs up for Obama/Biden in '08 (as did many of my neighbors--one even painted her garage squares with their names!). Other neighbors posted McCain/Palin signs. I went around to EVERY house and made sure they knew when early voting was, how they could register if they hadn't already done so, etc.

Living in Texas, I am surrounded by Republicans, many of whom are loving, generous people. They just tend to feel that it's each person's individual responsibility to give to others in need, not the government's (besides major emergencies). God is the God of neither party, nor does he probably care much for our politics. Christians know what the Bible says about leaders--to pray for them. It doesn't mean we have to agree with them. One reason I got involved in voter registration during the last election was that I was so sick of the hateful words and lies and wanted to do something constructive. I'm sure I registered equal numbers of each party--there's no way to know since party affiliation is not listed on our voter registration cards. What saddened me the most was the number of people who absolutely refused to register, even professionals. Maybe all the vitriol turns them off from the voting process.

                              bethie -

Good for you for deciding to do something constructive instead of just sitting around complaining. I did some voter registration during the 2008 campaign, too, and since we do list party affiliation, I know I registered at least two Republicans and a couple of Independents in addition to the Democrats we were supposed to be looking for. It would've been unethical to do otherwise.

As for why people refuse to register, around here a lot of people still believe that not registering will keep them from being called for jury duty (and see my post below for my thoughts on that!) Apparently they don't know that system went out at least 30 years ago. Others are just too lazy, too uninformed, just don't care, or are firmly convinced that "just one vote" doesn't matter. Either way, you're right - it's very sad.

Steven - Enjoyed your post above - some interesting parallels to what you wrote yesterday.

Thanks, JoAnne. I may have had a higher number of people not interested in registering because I live in a college town, and it seems that some young people just aren't interested in politics yet--they don't see how it affects them, like you said. Also, I was set up at a local rec center, and a fair percentage of the young kids were minorities. I wondered if they would have felt "safer" if I also were a person of color. I set up my table for a few hours each day for a whole week, and it took some kids seeing me every day for that entire week before they finally felt like they could trust me with their info. That's just half the hurdle, though; then, you have to encourage them to actually go to the polls and vote. I will say, voting in the primary here was SOOOO exciting! I was a delegate for Obama in our Democratic caucus. I still keep hoping we can turn Texas purple...

Jesus spent much of his life teaching, healing, feeding, and helping the poor. Thank Heavens, Jesus was not a conservative like Newt G., Arnold S. , etc. , etc. with all their illicit affairs. So much for the Republican conservative family values.

IO, God is no respecter of persons. He doesn't put one group over another; He loves us all equally, and He hates all sin equally. With our tiny eyes we see what we think is important, but He sees the whole picture.

Also, don't tout the "pro-life" value unless you are also pro-health care for all, anti-death penalty, anti-war, and anti-torture.

Actually, many Democrats are pro-choice (i.e. pro-abortion) and are still anti-death penalty. I believe in life for the innocent and death for the guilty...

                              I agree with Bethie.

and Larry, "Pro-choice" does on equate to "Pro-abortion" it's called pro-CHOICE.

It simply means that it is your choice, as a mother, to CHOOSE whether or not your child is born.

I'm not saying that I like abortion, or that everyone that has an abortion is doing it because they are legitimately responsible and made a mistake, I'm just saying that I believe a better and healthier approach is to give women the choice.

We, as women, can be very irrational and hormonal in a state of pregnancy. That mixed with desperation can cause us to do serious harm to ourselves. I'm not saying that children don't have the right to life. They do, and I don't think that even my morals would allow me to abort a baby, but sometimes, your maternal intuition just knows if it's right to bring a baby into a certain environment. In some cases, bringing a child into a certain life would be an injustice in itself.

And no human, no matter how much authority he or she may have, has the right to judge whether someone should die. If abortion is murder. So is the death-penalty.

Ryan is toast...the Republicans lost the ability to maintain their "message war" while attempting to govern at the same time...In the past Republicans have been effective with the messaging war against Democrats-- but once elected...it all goes to hell .

What I find amusing is watching them do a poor job of blaming the Democrats for their loss in NY 26 when in essence...they're resorting to worst like Ryan's bill to kill Medicare...place seniors on a voucher that will benefit insurance companies (big business) which would be nothing short of them (Republicans) aiding their Corporate welfare friends...AMAZING.

Smart move there with the vote in the Senate because every GOP Senator that voted for is now on the record for supporting it. 2012 elections are going to be very interesting...

Well said Anita, particularly in terms of Paul Ryan. The big issue for Republicans is that what they say sounds good when they're talking in empty platitudes with no chance of being enacted. Once they start to act on their draconian agenda the danger of their philosophy becomes immediately obvious.

Right also on Ed Schultz, and kudos to MSNBC for dealing with his rant immediately and appropriately...would only Conservative media do the same with their own bad actors.

                              So let's recap.

                              NY-26 win.

                              Ryan budget defeated.

Obama budget defeated 97 to 0.

Not to be a buzz kill but I don't understand it. Not even one democrat voted for it. Says 2 things. They either did not want to go on record committing to anything Obama until they're sure where the country will be next year OR they, .no there is no other thing. Why didn't the dems want to show their constituents where they stand. You have to love the dems unity and courage. This is why nothing got accomplished when they had a super majority in Congress. The GOP fights and then unites and sticks to their talking points, offense. The dems fight and fight and never reconcile, defense.

I am stunned by the lack of support or am I missing something?

...and yes, I understand that Obama has called for more cuts but since this was a symbolic vote anyway, why not support the bill as a show of solidarity with the President? This way it looks like even his party doesn't support it.

Groucho. I believe the president threw out his own budget saying he's looking for deeper cuts. That may be why they voted a unanimous no. Just a theory. I personally would like to see the House now vote on the CPC budget. Let's meet in the middle folks. It's the only way to accomplish what is right for the nation.

Ms.Palin is totally unqualified to run for the office of President. She probably resigned as Alaska governor for two reasons; the lure of becoming a pop icon and its financial rewards and being in way over her head as Alaska governor. It would be a grave mistake for the Republican party to nominate her.

*** Who wins (and who loses) if Palin runs:

Winners: Late night comedians, political blogs, and Sarah Palin herself, who will laugh all the way to the bank.

Losers: Anyone who actually takes the election of the potential leader of the free world seriously.

                                On another note:

My First Thoughts today are completely off topic, but since it touches on how we view ourselves as Americans, hopefully it's at least somewhat relevant.

I'm really disappointed to be here this morning. Why? I had originally been summoned for jury duty today. Our county uses the one day/one trial system and since so many people try to "escape" from having to serve, they summon a couple hundred standby jurors for each day in addition to the regular pool, and if you're on standby, you have to call the courthouse the day before to see if you're needed. The last few times I was summoned I had very high standby numbers and thus didn't go, but since I was only #41 this time, I figured it was a shoo-in that I'd be at the courthouse all day today. But, when I called yesterday, the recording said they didn't need any jurors today - no standbys, no re-schedules, no nobody - we were ALL excused. I've been on two juries in my life - one civil, one criminal - but both were at least 25 years ago, and this is at least the fifth or sixth time now that I haven't even made it as far as the courthouse. And I was totally bummed out at that.

So here's my question - am I the only one out there who would be? There's the civic duty part, which I admit I take just as seriously as never missing a trip to the polls on Election Day, but apart from that, I just think the whole system is fascinating. It's nothing at all like it looks on tv - it's flawed and imperfect and inconvenient and the good guys don't always win and yes, it's even yawn-inducing at times, sort of like watching C-Span or even being in the congressional visitor galleries in person - but to me, that's part of the fascination. It's that "never-ending battle for Truth, Justice, and The American Way".

Or - as my co-workers seem to agree - maybe I'm just totally off my rocker. Anyone else?

I use to avoid it if possible, but I have gone every time I have been called. So far I have not been picked because I have strong convicitions. Most of the trials in my county are driving under the influence and I have issues with the law as written.

I would love to participate in a jury, although attorneys usually aren't selected. The last time I was called for a panel, they sent me home after check-in--the clerk said I'd never be picked so why waste my time! I think it would be difficult to sit in judgment of someone else but an important part of our judicial system.

I was only on one jury, I was called in at the last moment, and was never asked any questions. The case was against a scruffy looking guy driving a 1970s toyota civic who ran into the back of a pick-up truck, they were at a stop light at the time. the guy claimed this civic hit him and he can no longer pick up his son because of back injuries, but he still could water ski and hike. I was the only hold out on giving him a settlement, there were more that thought like me, but they wanted to go home. When it was done I was so ashamed of our system of justice I thought how many people went to prison because people did not want to stay and do their duty.

Thanks to all for your comments.

Salt Grass - I hear you. After having my car totaled a few years back by a drunken 16-year-old girl driving without a license in a "borrowed" car with no lights on at 10:30 pm on New Year's Eve (yeah, I know - drunk drivers on New Year's Eve - what a cliche!) I doubt that I'll ever get picked for a DUI case either. Though if I somehow was, I'd like to think I would still bend over backwards to be fair - it's another one of those aspects of "the system" that I'm a sucker for.

Steeler Fan - You're right, it is very difficult to sit in judgement. On my first case, we had to convict a young man of attempted murder, even though we all felt at least some degree of empathy for him after all his wife had done to provoke him. But like you also said, it's an important part of our judicial system. You may never get to serve, but you do your part. Hey, one of the many reasons I love Joe Biden is that when he was called back in January, he showed up, too!

Barb H - You did the right thing, and you'll never regret that. Good for you.

I've been called up for jury duty a number of times but have never been selected to be on the jury. I got really close last time--I was in the final group of about 60 or so--but we were let go because the defendant fled. That was kind of a bummer. I was sort of mentally prepared for it. I might be called up more often because I'm a teacher--don't know if there's any connection there. Yes, the whole process is very interesting to me, too.

                                Hi Steeler Fan,

It is hard. I have been called three times but only served once. Was an interesting but not a pleasant experience. Heard a drug case where the defense was trying to say that one of two men in a car had possesion of an illegal substance. There was no evidence to pinpoint whose drugs it was (within a reasonable doubt). The other man was working (getting a deal) from the prosecution to testify against the other guy on trial. Both had prior criminal history (but not drug related). After hearing the case I thought to myself, there is no case. The prosecution didn't prove their case, so I couldn't judge that the defendant was guilty. To my surprise 8 of 12 were ready to convict within 15 minutes after our first vote. Over the next two days, two women one a paralegal and the other a college age girl buckled under the pressure and gave in to convict. I don't blame the girl but the paralegal should have known better. One other guy believed like me that there was no evidence and couldn't convict. It could have been the other guy. I couldn't in good conscience convict him. As I tried to relay the facts of the case and point out the lack of evidence over the two days, I was called a misguided liberal, a d#$mned fool and someone tolerant of drugs overrunning my community. I am pretty set in my ways and will always speak my mind and not back down, but I was sure glad that that other guy didn't fold either.

In the end despite pressure, the case ended as a hung jury. The judge dismissed us and said that a new trial with new jurors would be called. Don't know how it turned out.

I have been called 5 times and served once, It is facinating to watch, but I think it is really stupid. I think the Judge is really the only QUALIFIED person to determin the law and not let emotion get in the way.

I told them that I don't believe in the judicial system and they sent me home

                                  Breaking News:

After Ronald Regan death, doctors saved tissue samples in hopes that a future medical process would revive him from the dead. Republicans have long sought his clone, but a recent power outage destroyed all viable tissues. Like a beehive without a queen, the Republican Party is now in the process of forcing a worker bee to become the queen. Results have been mixed, but one thing is for certain. There is no Regan waiting in the wings to lead the elephants down the road of glory.

So I hear Republicans are going to repackage Paul Ryan's "Medicare" plan. Now they are going to come out and say they are the only ones saving Medicare and if we do nothing then senioirs now will suffer. These people are indefensible on any level. They are not saving Medicare by privatizing the program. They are not saving Medicare by giving money to insurance companies to insure seniors, they are not saving Medicare by creating two classes of people -- the 55 and older's and the under 55's. There's a very easy way to make Medicare solvent and it's called Medicare for all. Every American instantly become eligible for Medicare. Those below the age of 65 pay an extra FICA tax along with their employer (employees and employers already pay premiums to insurance companies for the privilege of insurance). The system immediately becomes solvent as younger healthier people are paying into a system but not using as much of the services as the sicker older people. However, all you'll hear from Republicans is that they are saving the system. They are doing it however on the backs of the middle class while at the same time continuing to give tax breaks to corporations and the wealthy and then insisting on even more tax breaks for them moving into the future. These creatures are laughable.

It's a very, very old GOP tactic: Say it often enough and it will become a true fact because "They are all saying"............whatever.

My mother always believed whatever was going around because "They" said it...............She would never tell me exactly who "they" were because she expected me to know because "Everyone" is saying the same thing.

So expect a lot more from the Repubs because repetition = truth

I think Palin is good for women in Politics since there are not that many vocal as her. She could do better with knowledge and history of politics and government policy. No matter what she says and msot times not as well tought out I think she at least is sincere.

The big problem I have with Sarah Palin is she is a Quitter and an Oathberaker; these are core values to me.

She took an Oath to serve the People of Alaska and she quit.

I will never vote for a quitter and an Oathbreaker

The majority of women I know cannot stand Palin because we feel like she makes women look bad. There are so many other, smarter women in politics out there, but they don't make news because they are not as attractive, as self-promoting, or as "fringy" (my word for someone on the extreme right who takes every opportunity to bash Obama). Besides disagreeing with her stance on almost every issue, I was really surprised that she would even consider being the VP last time because she had just given birth to a baby with special needs. PLUS, she was dealing with an unwed, pregnant teen. As a mother of two teen daughters, I just couldn't/can't relate to her at all. It doesn't mean that women who are moms can't succeed in the political arena--that's not what I'm saying. But Palin had some real family issues that I felt she just put on the back burner while she chased after the limelight.

Bethie - To be President of the United States one has to be able to juggle many very complicated and important matters. It takes someone who can delegate to a strong, well informed support structure and be able to make the Big decisions while empowering others to step up and confidently handle all the others. This is the woman I saw running for Vice President of the United States of America!

Barb - It's President of the United States of America - not POTUS! An Acronym devalues the importance of the position and although it's 35 characters more to write it out, it's worth it to hear United States of America every time :)

OBXR--I guess you're right. I still have high expectations for people, especially those who choose to run for the office of VP, which is a "heartbeat away from the office of the Presidency".

Jordan--Yes, Palin has a lot of bravado. However, she is not good at articulating her ideas clearly--she couldn't answer some of the most basic questions, and she lacks (at least in 2008) basic information that she should have known. For example, she couldn't comment on the "Bush Doctrine" because she didn't know what the interviewer was referring to. She couldn't discuss any Supreme Court decisions that she disagreed with or even talk about what she liked to read. She doesn't seem to be a big reader or be interested in others' points of view. Like I said, I can't stand her positions on issues, so these add up to someone whom I would never vote for and whom I hope is NOT the Republican nominee, no matter how much better Obama is by comparison.

Bethie - Agreed she was not well prepared in 2008. When you're asked to be VP I guess you say yes. I hold McCain accountable for that one. Sarah Palin has studied, traveled, and listened to the opinions and ideas of many people since then. She would do well as VP now. Not sure about Presdient? Maybe ~

If Palin runs, every democrat running for office in America benefits as Obama's coattails will be enormous. Like Trump, I think most of America recognizes her as the unqualified, illiterate she is and will dismiss her quickly as a serious candidate. To me, Romney is still the front runner. Still hasn't said anything really outrageous or stupid, stuck by his Mass health plan, has tons of money in his war chest in addition to his personal wealth and, for a GOPer this is now what the party considers middle of the road. His religion will definitely hurt him. Right now, he's the best they've got. Gag time.

Most surprising to me was that the Obama budget was defeated 97 to 0 yesterday. Not a single democrat voted for it. Says 2 things. They either did not want to go on record committing to anything Obama until they're sure where the country will be next year OR they ....no, the cowards did not want to show their constituents where they stand. You have to love the dems unity and courage. This is why nothing got accomplished when they had a super majority in Congress. The GOP fights and then unites and sticks to their talking points, offense. The dems fight and fight and never reconcile, defense.

                                          Been that way forever.

...and yes, I understand that Obama has called for more cuts but since this was a symbolic vote anyway, why not support the bill as a show of solidarity with the President? This way it looks like even his party doesn't support it. Adding more cuts later would have been the cherry on the cake for the dems.

I read that former NY Governor George Pataki is considering a run for President. A liberal to moderate republican, he was a multi-term governor of that state and from all accounts did a real good job. If he does throw his hat in the ring and gets some national name recognition, he may be a serious and viable candidate.

Giffords, if she comes back, could go for McCain's seat in 2016, but there is no other Democrat out there in this state with enough clout to win...this state is turning purple eventually with the Mexican population growth (which is the REAL reason the Republicans are trying to tick off all the brown people on the planet), but not yet.
