Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz said her party's victory in the special election for New York's 26th congressional seat shows voters "do not want Republicans to end Medicare...[and balance] all the pain and all the hurt on the backs of our seniors."
The Florida congresswoman refuted claims that third-party candidate Jack Davis helped Democrat Kathy Hochul defeat Republican Jane Corwin.
"We're quite sure quite a few Democratic votes potentially [went to Davis]," Wasserman Schultz said on MSNBC's "Andrea Mitchell Reports." "I think that Kathy probably would have won this race head-to-head, and that the third party candidate's not really so much of a factor."
Wasserman Schultz also responded to Congressman Paul Ryan's statement on Morning Joe Wednesday morning that "the President and his party have decided to shamelessly distort and demagogue Medicare." Ryan was referring to Democratic claims that the Ryan budget will "kill Medicare."
The new DNC chairwoman replied, "Come on. Paul Ryan clearly needs to be doing that. He proposed a plan that even Newt Gingrich called radical."
Wasserman Schultz said it was Republicans that were doing the distorting.
"The Republicans leading up to the 2010 election actually fabricated what Democrats did to Medicare... We added 12 years of solvency to Medicare, and ensured that it would be better for seniors overall. "

Debbie Wasserman-Shultze has not disappointed me!
She's a REAL firecracker! ;o)
I saw her earlier on MSNBC and she's got more b@lls than Tim Kaine ever had!
Thanks to the excellent decision to give the DNC chair to her, I am now back to contributing regularly...
Give em hell Debbie!
Her attempt to prevent Israel, and Obama's unfortunate position on it from being used by republicans as a 2012 issue are very insightful.
Clearly, and unlike so many of the posters here, DWS and the vast majority of the democratic party, and particularly the Jewish democrats, realize the huge problem Obama has created.
The stark obviousness of the problem is magnified why Reid comes out and criticizes Obama on the issue.
I agree with Feisty - DWS is a :firecracker." Now let's she how adept she is at fixing Obama's mistake. And being a Jewish congress woman from Florida it is a huge issue for her.
Good luck DWS, you are going to need it.
Muffintop - the current polls in Israel shows 57% support Obama's speech. And this was not a mistake - these 1967 borders have been on the table since Clinton days - even GWB supported it.
Good to see you tonight Elise!
Debbie also mentioned in that interview (I think it was with Andrea Mitchell) that, she has sat in on meeting with Netanyhu the past 4 days and the press is GROSSLY exaggerating the situation!
Feisty, I have to admit I didn't know too much about DWS when she was made chairman of the DNC and I didn't have much of an opinion one way or another. But the more I learn, the more impressed I am. She was a good choice.
Fiesty you hit the nail on the head. Chairwoman Debbie W. is Outstanding. When we heard she was the Dems choice women all over this country are rejoycing. She stands tall and tells it like it is. This 2012 race will be very different than the 2010 simply because she's at the helm!
It' amazing that Republican women can't smell the coffee and are treated like Second Class Citizens and are not allowed to hold any significant offices or Leadership positions.
When women in this country wake up and fully support the Dems the party who supports us, the Lilly Ledbetter act, now women can make the same salary as men no more back seat salaries.
Wake up women and support the team who supports Women. We are the Majority in this country and Vote like we are in the Minority letting men take the lead.
Why don't you STFU for a change?
You have NO idea whether I have or haven't donated to the victims...
Go away TROLL & CHOKE on your Cheeto's!
@ Indy & June -- I didn't know anything about Debbie prior to the 2008 primary.
I do know she was a staunch Hillary supporter and even though I disagreed with her choice, I admired her tenacity!
Once then Senator Obama won, she threw her support behind him 150% and has continued to do so!
She MAKES me PROUD to be a strong liberal WOMAN!
What a spectacular role model! ;o)
Oh oh, be careful Please Insult Me...don't want to piss off that skank fisty redbush. Besides everyone knows poeple on the left don't give to charity, they think its the governments responsibility.
It was a tremendous victory last night for the Democratic Party. I am proud of our small, yet tenacious progressive media/websites who never let up on what Ryan's budget entailed. It was information that needed to be reported nonstop. His budget was a real slap in the face to all Americans who in their later years would have been just plain forgotten about. And it's wrong. Sorry to see so many Republicans voted for it. I really am.

I hope you all got to hear President Obama today in London give his speech. It was so eloquent. He spoke about our past and our future and the role we must all play.
President Obama very much holds past leaders in very high regard. And he's asking us to continue that same kind of leadership; to be strong side by side with our allies in a world very different from the world of FDR, Churchill, Truman, Eisenhower, etc.
The 21st Century is a moment for us all to really live up to all we stand for. A moment to extend our hand to all those around the world regardless of religion, color, sex.
As President Obama said - if we and Britian don't do it - who will?
A truly memorable speech.
Thank you Ireland and Britian for the warm welcome you extended to our President and First Lady. It's been quite touching watching it all. Queen Elizabeth and her entire family especially.
British Press Pans Obama’s Empty TelePrompter Speech to Parliament
He is with out a doubt the most narcissistic classes clown ever to sit in the oval office. The world laughs at him.
This petty man-child and his adolescent speech writers should take note of Bibi’s speech yesterday(no teleprompter). 25 standing ovations!! Botchit talks and narcolepsy overcomes the listener. It consists of droning monotony and empty words, I liken it to torture.
(Obama inner voice:) You see if weren’t for you white colonialists, my ‘father’ wouldn’t have gotten pissed at you, and I wouldn’t be here destroying America and living out the reality YOUR guilt! So here’s to you queenie and all your little peons for buying into the clap trap of Soros!!! You deserved to have your monetary system fail!!! Just as I’m about to destroy the idea of the American Dream!!
And as for that small jewish group occupying that little strip of land,,,,,your next.
Wow, Pat I think some people will disagree with you.

Feisty, I have to admit I didn't know too much about DWS when she was made chairman of the DNC and I didn't have much of an opinion one way or another. But the more I learn, the more impressed I am. She was a good choice.
Debbie Wasserman-Shultz, US Congresswoman,FL, is smart, cagey and probably the best choice for the DNC job. DWS' commitment to women's issues and the working middle class is well documented.
Her stalwart campaign for cancer research, among other things, while fiercely and successfully combating the disease is more than admirable. She is more than deserving of her new post and will do an excellent job.
Savvy Senior - DWS is the original pit bull with lipstick!
Not only does she walk the walk - she talk the talk!
GOOOOOOOOOOOO Debbie!
Feisty,
Ditto that! Gooooooo Debbie!

Channel Four (UK): You get a flavour of why David Cameron might be so keen to bask in Barack Obama‘s glory on this trip in various photo ops. We asked YouGov to repeat a poll they did in November 2003 when President George W Bush was in town and see how the numbers changed. It suggests that Brits love Obama as much as they hated Bush.
The 2003 poll suggested that 75 per cent polled had little or no confidence in President Bush. Today 72 per cent have a great deal or fair mount of confidence in President Obama. In today’s poll, 81 per cent think President Obama is highly intelligent, back in 2003 just 17 per cent thought the US had got itself an highly intelligent president. You get the picture.

Wow, thetotas.
Mr Obama is the first US president to be granted the rare honour of speaking to both Houses in the historic Westminster Hall, previously accorded only to a handful of eminent figures like Nelson Mandela, Charles de Gaulle and the Pope. Allan Macke

Wow, thetotas. President Obama is the first United States President to be invited to speak at historic Westminster Hall. This is quite honor bestowed upon our president by the British. Quite an honor.
Thetotas.......care to provide a link as to where the British Press criticized the President re the teleprompter.
I'v been monitering the UK and Irish media websites and never saw anything regarding that, in fact, all their reporting and videos have been extremely positive, unusual for the British press, never known for their reticence in pointing out gaffes.
It's a shame that while you spend your days drooling over Obammy, you haven't mentioned word one about the tragedy in the mid-west, except of course to insult someone who called you to task about it. And it's even more of a shame that while the President is off in another country, hundreds of Americans have lost their lives and thousands more are without shelter. And you people beat GWB to death about Katrina...
Redhead = Again with the STFU?
Just how in the world are you allowed to continue to post on this site with the continued use of vulgarity?
"Profanity is the weapon of the witless"
When Barack Obama delivered his speech to combined House of Commons and House of Lords, it was the 46th time a head of state has done so since French president Albert Lebrun in 1939.
Thanks to the House of Commons information office (and a great thought from Simon Jeffery), we've got the full list - and it's a fascinating breakdown of world politics and issues in a dramatic post-war period.
Obama is the third US president to do this, after Bill Clinton in 1995 and Ronald Reagan in 1982. But he will be the first to give a speech in the huge Westminster Hall - only Nelson Mandela (1993) and Charles de Gaulle (1960) have done spoken to formal gatherings of both houses there.

here's a link refuting totas' bias and opinionn hatchett job:

You all know when the facts aren't on the Repubs' side they will just MAKE crap up. Totas has been busted on this behavior before. Won't be the last time, I am sure.
Clara - Enough with the talking points. When have I been busted and what did I make up? I went to the link you provided and thats not the article I copy and paste.
You have a link, and I have a link, and never the links will meet.
Clara, seriously, I barely comment here, and now I find I have some kind of sorted past. Wow the drama.
Feisty,
Right on. Debbie was a GREAT choice to be the National Chair.
Pot meet Kettle...the newspaper that reported that it wasn't a good speech was the conservative Daily Telegraph who ran the headline:
"Barack Obama's Speech Failed To Live Up To His Own High Standards"
Of course, FOX News picked up on it and ran with the headline:
"Obama Speech Bombs In Parliament"
PS - Since when did conservatives in this country care what the Brits think?
okay, here are a couple, totas:

And for someone who hardly posts here,...your profile has literally HUNDREDS of comments,...so yeah - there's a 3rd.
Not that it matters to me; but back tracking is sure something Republicans are good at! But of course, YOU'RE an Independent, so you don't need to worry about that.
Da Noid,
She claims she isn't a conservative; but rather an INDEPENDENT,...Just check out her comment profile,...it's all there for the world to enjoy,...
Conservatives care deeply about anyone who will openly criticize our sitting President. ESPECIALLY if they do it on foreign soil. Which is funny really, when you realize how completely unhinged they became when Natalie Maines did that in the run up to the Iraq War boondoggle. We got a new adjective out of that fiasco. I just hope I am never Dixie Chicked!
http://politicalhumor.about.com/library/images/blpic-yodadixiechicked.htm
Now there doesn't seem to be a gutter or sewer deep enough that they won't troll looking for unkind things said about THIS sitting President. Isn't that ODD? I mean these are the things that just make you scratch your noggin' and go "hmmmmmmmm".
Clara - You are gripping. Slow day for you, not getting enough attention at home? Why on earth would you waste time checking out my comments, you're to funny. Anyway, I have been here since 2009 and have under 250 comments, to me that's a few. But I really liked the literally HUNDREDS of comments you wrote as if you where unfolding some deep dark secret.
Clara, much to your dismay, I am registered as an Independent and know matter how you try and spin it, I am still an Independent. You really should get out more.
What's not to celebrate. And this is just the beginning!
Agreed on the Kaine cajones there Fiesty. Maybe he get that taken care of for the VA senate bid in 2012. Gotta fight fire with fire, not a water gun. He is a moderate Dem. He led from the mushy middle. He's getting classed on how to lead from behind so he can watch his Senate opponent step in the crap they lay down and rise above the fray to WIN in 2012!
We do have a BIG TENT but we just don't show elephants.
Get ready for the coming 3 ringer of an election folks, it's going to be a humdinger!
Republicans, after coming up with the "death panel" lie and the "gonna pull the plug on grandma" lie, not to mention the "vote Democratic and the terrorists will kill you" lie, scream like scalded pigs when the truth is told about the Ryan budget. It is time for the Republicans to stop writing fiction and start dealing with a reality based world!
Lets not forget about the "throw granny of a cliff" debackle by the DNS. Not to mention that Ryans budget got 40 votes while Obama's got 0 votes.
When a plan is offered that tells an American citizen earning less than $40K with 3 children to raise that he or she must save $300K in order to cover medical costs during their retirement years...it's a no brainer. What was Paul Ryan thinking?
Hint: the idea is to reign-in excessive costs and improve outcomes.
The third party candidate took 9500 votes away from Corwin. So basically more people voted for the republican/teaparty candidates than they did for the democrat. Wow great win...not!
JFK 2112: In an overwhelmingly Republican district (estimated 30,000 more registered R's than D's), maybe their were one or two Republican crossover votes. Ya' think? Much?
That is what you would call fair-weather Republicans. True Republicans would never vote for that lady.
JFK is correct. Every one with a small brain knows that when you have a 3rd party running, they take the votes away. Not to mention that the third party candidate ran 3 other times in the same district as a DEM. So if you really put 2 and 2 together, you can think that this third party candidate was a plant from the DNS to get the votes from the republican.
Dear Grammer Police:
Should have used "there" instead of "their". Please don't kill me in my sleep.
Thanks,
Your Buddy ForePlinger
A couple of months ago, I received a phone call from the DNC. The person who I talked with, asked me a suggestion to increase the chances of Democratic candidates winning an election. I pointed out what happened in 2010 election. The Democratic candidates were poorly equiped, ran away from the issues, didn't defend vigorously the ACA, not enough pundits for media and public consumption. They did not confront headon the lies of the RP/TBs, The Filibusterers. I asked, how can the people vote for candidates that did the above things? In other words, speak the truth and debunk the lies persistently sounded by the RP/TBs, The Filibusterers.
How can a plan to switch Medicare to a voucher program work and balance budget woes if the folks receiving vouchers are not eligible to receive them for 8 to 10 years. If you really want to fix the problem then the vouchers should start with the folks getting Medicare now - not the rest of the population who is 55 and under and do nothing but put money in and take nothing out. It makes no sense... Also last time I checked if you are over 65 - without Medicare an average health insurance policy is well over $1,200 per month per person - that is why they automatically put you in the Medicare system at that age - no one could afford the actual premiums - a voucher for $300 or so would not even come close. And lets not forget by the time anyone reaches 65 you usually have some form of pre existing condition - no insurance company would touch you...
What about the 500 billion that Obama Health Care Reform will take from Medicare? How will that effect people, or is it a dead issue? I think all of this should be addressed.
nothing?
Drinks on me at the Dew Drop Inn on Friday. Tell em' to put your libations on my tab till I get there......and then we'll light the fuse on this thing.
The well spoken, calm, competent young lady in charge of the DNC is such a nice contrast compared to Palin and Bachmann.
Could someone who supports the Ryan approach or anyone for that matter provide the documentation that supports the number Ryan casually throughout on Morning Joe on Wednesday when he stated that Medicare was 30 Trillion dollars in the hole?
I've heard some incredible numbers spouted from the mouths of Congressional leaders before but I would like to actually 'see' and not just hear the claim that Medicare in the 30 Trillion in the HOLE!!!
I'm sorry, if anything is 30 trillion dollars in the HOLE the US would not be in the shape it is in. He's accusing Democrats of "Mediscare" tactics and he says that Medicare is 30 trillion in the hole and yet acts like the US should still obligate those 55 and over.....something is not passing the sniff test to me.
I am extremely thrilled and gloriously confident that the Democratic Party will gain monumental accomplishments in our quest to win elections from here forward.
DNC Chairwoman Wasserman-Shultz has everything it takes to be the great leader we need in this position.
She's automatically a force without even trying; because of her intellect, courageous, spunkiness and down right fearless straight forward abilities to not put up with BS.
A natural leader, and it will make a major positive difference in our efforts.
TRUTH - not CRAP
Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
If you think the DNS took a beating last NOV, wait until 2012. What happened last NOV has not happened in 70 years. Us Independents will see to it that it happens again.
NEW YORK — Left-leaning Ed Schultz has been suspended from msnbc cable television for referring to radio talk show host Laura Ingraham as a "right-wing slut" and "talk slut" on his syndicated radio show Tuesday. (MSNBC)
You libs are sure a classy bunch , aren't ya?
Guess maybe the republicans should look at the polls now and then. 63-80% have stated they did not want to loose their medicare and screaming people at town hall meetings should have been a small clue.
These senators voted to get rid of medicare and they are up for election this year. John Barrasso (WY), Bob Corker (TN), Orrin Hatch (UT), Dean Heller (NV), Richard Lugar (IN) and Roger Wicker (MS).
Rand Paul only voted against medicare because he voted for a plan to end far more government agencies along with Sens. Tom Coburn (R-OK), Jim DeMint (R-SC), Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Mike Lee (R-UT), David Vitter (R-LA), and Paul himself, along with his Kentucky colleague, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. But it failed by a wide 90-7 margin because it was even too drastic for most republicans.
