Cantor wants Ryan in race for president

Despite Paul Ryan’s attempt on NBC’s Meet the Press to shut the door on speculation that he might run for president in 2012, he got one high-level possible supporter today.

At a press conference on Capitol Hill today, Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) said he’d like to see Ryan (R-WI) run.

“Sure, I think Paul is about real leadership,” Cantor said in response to a question of whether he would like to see the congressman make a bid. “I think that's what this public so desperately wants to do right now. They want to see Washington that will lead. They don't want to see individuals dismiss the current problems as something that we can sweep under the rug. These are problems that go to the very existence of programs that are so important to people. Yet, somehow the other side castigates, us for putting a plan out there that is responsible. What is the choice, their choice thus far has been bankruptcy of these programs and rationing of healthcare.”

Cantor’s comments come as many in the GOP are disappointed with the current crop of 2012 candidates. When asked about Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels’ decision not to run, Cantor said, “Certainly I think Mitch Daniels would have been a great candidate. He had his decision to make, and he made it.”

Cantor made sure to praise the current field as a “strong candidates” but mentioned it’s “early still.”

When asked whether any GOP 2012 nominee should totally embrace Ryan’s budget plan, a plan that includes a significant altering of Medicare, Cantor said, “I'm looking for the presidential candidates to embrace our formula in the Ryan Budget. I'm looking for them to embrace a leadership roles that makes tough decisions."

Cantor also made sure to point out he himself would not be a candidate for president in 2012.

American Girl--I do believe you have your history all wrong. It was the Democrats who stole the S.S. money, not the Republicans! And you're also flapping your mouth about the Republicans and jobs over the last 5 mos.??? Well, where in the world were you when the Dems controlled both houses??? What in the he** have the Dems done to create jobs??ABSOLUTELY NOTHING In fact, they, and their famous Community Organizer President, have done all in their power to PREVENT jobs. More people than ever receiving food stamps, unemployment staying high and you're yapping about the Republicans!! Must be that Obama kool-aid you're drinking!!! DISGUSTING!

Tough to get that in the best of circumstances, then to top it off every single step of the way we had to keep CONTERACTING YOUR FILIBUSTERS!! Pretending to cooperate, ok ok bipartisan support, then after getting the amendments you wanted, CHANGE YOUR MINDS AND VOTE AGAINST IT! How the HELL did you EXPECT things to go when you're dealing with the RAMPANT hypocrisy you CLOWNS were engendering!? so no don't you DARE start that crap about "oh you controlled both houses, you could have done something." no. No WAY am I going to hear that complete load of bullhockey again! Now try your talking points if you must but at least TRY to have some modicum of respect for FACTS!

Actually, it's been the plan of the GOP to privatize SS, medicare, medicaid etc since the reagan administration. It was called "starve the beast". That's why the GOP deiberately created this debt crisis! It is indeed corporate fascism! They want to take benefits from the less fortunate and then give the money usually spend of those benefits to the MOST fortunate. This isnt America!

Republicans are scared to go up against a strong incumbent Democrat in 2012. By November of 2012 the economy will be doing much better with all of the stimuli that have been implemented over the last few years. Obama really cannot lose. That said, there is no certainty that Democrats will retain the Senate or get back the House.

It doesn't matter who runs. The 2012 election is going to be decided by the voters who pay no income tax and get lots of free stuff from the government at the expense of hard working, productive, tax paying Americans. In 2009 that was reported as 51% of households; in 2012 it's likely to be even higher. If all of them vote, then there is no chance they will vote for anybody but the guy who keeps them income tax free and gives them the most free stuff.

47% of them were on the bottom 4% must of been in the top, All should pay tax especially all on the bottom, they hire no one and need to pay their fair share even if they are Obama's people. Vote Tea Party were takin america back!

The republicans say that they aren't going to raise taxes. I look for that to change after the 2012 election. Does anyone remember the elder President Bush's little statement,"Read my lips, no new taxes"? Taxes will be going up. If any candidate promises not to raise taxes, he or she is just plain lying to get elected.

Just who gets to pay more taxes, and how much remains to be seen.

if the tea party wins taxes will go down, there is many things we can cut but the dems won't let us, sure some people may have to work if they want money or have to pay for health care, but like I said a tea party person will not raise taxes

            #82.1 - Tue May 24, 2011 8:33 AM EDT

If the teaparty is not realistic enough to realize that you at least have to restore taxes to the PreGWB level in order to tackle our debt, why would anyone vote with you? Spending cuts alone will not do it unless you dramatically decrease spending on defense,SS and Medicare. There are better options than Ryan's plan for medicare and that is the Medicare preferred plans--run by private insurers that allows capitated risk arrangements that have limited cost increase vs traditional Medicare. The republicans should be trying to push this program and stop the cuts in funding for them under the Pres Obama health plan, rather than pursuing this idiotic proposal that will destroy Medicare . I don't want my taxes raised, I paid 75000 in fed taxes last yr, but I am willing to pay more in order to save my country. You teapartiers are full of it and have no real plans to help the country. Lets hear some ideas beyond "we will not raise taxes".

Cantor and Ryan should run together. Could you imagine how many millions of dollars corporations would dump into their campaigns knowing these (2) guys want to privatize everything while simultaneously de-regulating all industries. To have (2) guys in the White House that would throw grandma under the bus in order to boost earnings for health care is a corporate dream and these two would be the dream weavers.

The sweet smell of desperation. The party that cried because Obama lacked "foreign policy experience" wants a guy who's only experience with overseas is on junkets. A former Wienermobile driver who used Social Security to get through college then wants to deny it and Medicare to anyone else his age. The same guy who has never held a non-political job. As his buddy said, "Bring it on."

Inspite of my name, I am no relation to Paul Ryan.

Cantor and Ryan, all aglow in thier expensive, preppie suits, beautifully coiffed are always seen standing behind and to each side of John Boehner, (I still can't figure the pronunciation), looking like younger clones. I often wonder, if Boehner turned sharply in any direction, if we would hear a loud snap or cracking noise. Theyb have become a party of 3, one reasonable old school GOP, one Tea Party/GOP and the other one Tea Party. Together they are trying to form an identity with whatever id is poplular at the moment. These guys are nothing but political bungs rolling for dough. They do not have anyones best interests at heart but thier own.

Paul Ryan should run for POTUS. It would free up his Congressional district for the Democrats. People here in Wisconsin are tired and bored with Paul Ryan and the GOP plan to balance the budget and pay the deficits out of the wallets of the poor and middle class, while rewarding the wealthy with more tax cuts and loopholes.

Cantor, Boehner, and McConnell suckered Ryan into writing such a phony GOP budget plan, only because they could later disavow it, if necessary. When their wealthy contributors and corporate sponsors saw what a bonanza it was for the rich, they globbed onto it. What the GOP forgot is that the Tea Party isn't made of corporate CEOs and millionaires, but is comprised of the WallMartians, and the undereducated and underemployed. Those people need Social Security and Medicare even more than the rest of us. They're not going to let the RINOs steal it away under the guise of "balancing the budget" while the wealthy get even more perks than they got under Bush. Sacrifices need to be made in proportion to one's ability to make them. Only this will balance the budget and pay off the debt.

LOL Watch them all try and scurry and claim the bill, that they ALL (save 4 of them) voted in favor of a "starting point". Guess you should have took your time and debated it a bit first huh? What would you call such a quick pull of the trigger and rush to pass such an albatross? Premature passed-legislation? LMAO

Ryan won't run because he knows he'll be crushed in the general election.  His ridiculous plan to end Medicare is hugely unpopular.  The way it looks now, he'll be lucky to hold on to his congressional seat.  His fifteen minutes are just about over.  Good riddance.

Cantor and Ryan are secretly two of three unidentical triplets. The third triplet got all the brains and good looks. She's a gynecologist, working for Planned Parenthood.

Well...as long as Cantor is throwing HIS opinion around, I will throw a couple of mine in the hat!  Here they are:  Most people do not care that Cantor thinks Paul Ryan should run for President.  (Well, actually, that opinion DOES serve as comic fodder.)Additionally, instead of opining, deflecting and posturing, We the People would LOVE for Cantor to actually get to work in Congress and get some real things done to create jobs, stop giving the oil companies taxpayer subsidies, and get rid of the Bush taxcuts for the wealthy.

Everytime I see or hear Eric Cantor, all I can think of is "who gives a damn what Eric Cantor wants"? Who is Eric Cantor? What is Eric Cantor. The last I remember of Eric Cantor was a Meet the Press interview that oozed that ever popular "birthir" thing. From that time forward, how long will Mr. Cantor have time in any spotlight. Surely, he's on his way out. As for Mr. Ryan; President? President of What. He is author of the Republican Ryan Coupon Healthcare Program. There'll be no President in that.

The GOP is desperate to find ANYONE who will be brave enough to debate President Obama. They know the chances of winning in 2012 is very low, and what do they do? Throw dirt, make up lies, and behave like children. It's all about winning for the GOP, keep the rich rich, flex power, and screw the middle class.

Cantor wants a lightening rod candidate for more polarization and divisiveness in the nation. Looks like he's hoping to join Roger Ailes staff at FAUX Noise in the future...?

Republicans are saying it's still early with hopes that an unknown Star will jump in the presidential race. Based on history and a review of the entire Republican Party, this is about as plausible as the Rapture. What you see is what you get.

Really, it is a commentary on the deeper problems of the GOP/TP. Their platform of supply-side voodoo economics, Bush Doctrine of unilateral preemptive strike, and legislating morality has been debunked and rejected. The Teabaggers original mantra of limited government could have taken hold if they had been consistent -- ending corporate welfare, letting go of Big Government legislating morality, ending loopholes (tax reform), etc.

And of course the Republicans in the House should have been focusing on job creation, but they have no idea how to create jobs because they are still entrenched in trickle-down tax cuts for the rich to supposedly create jobs, which is why they also have no ability to balance the budget--they aren't willing to raise revenue even through tax reform.

Going after teacher's unions (attacking the middle class and education in one swoop), food protection, and Medicare instead is the most idiotic platform they could adopt. And all those conservatives in red states collecting welfare from the Fed, and getting hit with turbulent weather, better rethink their position on the role of government and climate change and a whole slew of right-wing nonsense.
