Cantor wants Ryan in race for president

Despite Paul Ryan’s attempt on NBC’s Meet the Press to shut the door on speculation that he might run for president in 2012, he got one high-level possible supporter today.

At a press conference on Capitol Hill today, Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) said he’d like to see Ryan (R-WI) run.

“Sure, I think Paul is about real leadership,” Cantor said in response to a question of whether he would like to see the congressman make a bid. “I think that's what this public so desperately wants to do right now. They want to see Washington that will lead. They don't want to see individuals dismiss the current problems as something that we can sweep under the rug. These are problems that go to the very existence of programs that are so important to people. Yet, somehow the other side castigates, us for putting a plan out there that is responsible. What is the choice, their choice thus far has been bankruptcy of these programs and rationing of healthcare.”

Cantor’s comments come as many in the GOP are disappointed with the current crop of 2012 candidates. When asked about Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels’ decision not to run, Cantor said, “Certainly I think Mitch Daniels would have been a great candidate. He had his decision to make, and he made it.”

Cantor made sure to praise the current field as a “strong candidates” but mentioned it’s “early still.”

When asked whether any GOP 2012 nominee should totally embrace Ryan’s budget plan, a plan that includes a significant altering of Medicare, Cantor said, “I'm looking for the presidential candidates to embrace our formula in the Ryan Budget. I'm looking for them to embrace a leadership roles that makes tough decisions."

Cantor also made sure to point out he himself would not be a candidate for president in 2012.

Actually, I think the funnier posts are from the rightwingnutwits pushing this false equivalency as hard as they can.

BTW, simply printing out the same Bonzonomics of the 1920s and 1980s in a new font, and calling it "New and Improved", is not "outside the box thinking"; at best, it is merely plagiarism. At worst, it is an appalling lack of knowledge of rather recent history.

JC, I see a lot of name calling but no clue as to how to solve any of these problems. But that is the leftwingnutjob strategy, call name, try to scare people because all their solutions have not worked. So what is the Democratic plan for the next 5-1/2 years? More spending and borrowed money?

We have MORE than clues Ray: You're going to HAVE to tax the rich and wealthy oil companies.

Why Republicans think that ONLY working people should be taxed is inexplicable.

And if you THINK for one minute that we're going to give away our Social Security Retirement Money and/or our Medicare so that Republicans don't have to tax the rich, you can think again, because it ain't gonna happen.

Now that Republicans have shown the American People that all Republicans have on the table IS our Social Security Retirement Money AND Medicare, maybe even a million or so of your Republican voters will finally say "NO" to THAT insanity.

Ray,

That's their plan.

Tax and spend, Tax and spend. That's all it's ever been.

Compare and contrast how easy it must be to be a Democratic congressman. No thinking required, no sense of responsibility. Look at Reid, Pelosi, Frank, Dodd, Rangel. .......Real mental giants huh??

Then along comes the Republicans who try to clean up the Democrats mess and try to be the adults in the room who are concerned with America's future. And all they get is more B.S. from the left. Never any constructive suggestions...never.

There is absolutely nothing responsible about their plan, regardless of what Cantor says. The Republicans keep thinking that if they say it enough, long enough, people are going to buy into their not-so-cleverly disguised plan to privatize Medicare. They've been barking this same tune for many years now. This is nothing new. All they're attempting to do is shift more of the cost burden on the backs of ordinary seniors. The private inusurance companies only goal is to make as much money as quickly as they can even though that translates into rate increases, denial of claims, or a reduction in benefits. This isn't leadership, it's a fabrication! It's a distraction, lie, unfair, greed based plan that is a coveted long sought goal of the Republican party. If Cantor thinks Ryan can lead, it would be down the same road their party and Bush took us down last time. The road of financial ruin. Privatized profit and socialized losses. I don't plan on going down that road ever again.

Have I read Ryan's "Path to Prosperity"? Yes, actually I have. IT'S A JOKE. It's nothing more than a tool the Republicans are attempting to institute in an effort to achieve reform that bundles all of their warped and distorted philosophical desires into sweeping radical reform. After reading it and applying my own personal life experiences and the historical trend that the Republicans have actually been able to legislate (both at the state and federal level) I have concluded that this just more disservice to the American people but certainly favors corporate America and the insurance industry at their expense. Ryan's plan contains $40 trillion in spending over 10 years while only producing $35 trillion in revenue. So, in a nutshell, his plan still continues deficit spending. Not as high of a rate as Obama's proposed plan (over time), but deficit spending none the less. Typical for Republicans, any short fall would be put on the backs of the average American worker like our teachers, police, firefighters, transportation workers etc....the very people that Republicans despise, wanting to outlaw the collective bargain rights of such workers. Yet running to them for a bailout of Wall Street and the banks when they operate irresponsibly. Furthermore, the blame he places on Fannie and Freddie is unwarranted when due consideration of the of the facts as they relate to the predatory lending practices and other bad behavior exhibited in the financial markets, like the use of credit default swaps. The section on ending corporate welfare would be hysterically funny it weren't so sad.

It is also another attempt to undo Obama's Affordable Care Act. Nothing more, nothing less. The Republicans have clearly demonstrated that their corporate and Wall Street supporters do not want to have to pay for health care coverage for anyone. This debate has been going on for 30 years (20 of which were held by a Republican president) and the only other time some kind of health care proposal was attempted was when Clinton was in office. The Republicans have refused to understand that cost containment of the the health care industry was a real desire of the American people. But the best the Republicans could do (next to totally ignoring the people) were the HMO's and PPO's that were a complete failure because they did nothing to contain costs but yet created a huge lobbying group and source of funding for Republican candidates and their conservative agenda.

Yes, I have read it and it should be renamed. May I suggest, "The Republican Play Book, A Plan To Finally Achieve Total Conservative Domination." I'll further suggest every Democrat and Independent read it as well. It's stomach turning!

I think Republicans are on the run everywhere. People are going back to the Democrats which are seen as the lesser of the two evils. It seems to me that Governor Walker of wisconsin will very likely be recalled next year and they will get a Democrat for governor. Sure wish the Repulicans could come up with a suitable candidate for president. I don't want to vote for Obama if I can help it.

Sure Democrats took a beating, but as soon as the Republicans got in they started the same old thing. Cut medicare and social security. Give more tax breaks to the wealthy and big business. The Idiots didn't realize why the people voted for them. They wanted jobs and all the republicans could offer was more Tax breaks for the Wealthy and destroy benefits. The Pendulum swings both ways.

The only question about the Senate is whether or not the GOP will have 60 votes after Nov 6 2012. Dems have already conceded ND, MO is gone. Manchin in WV will either switch parties or will be voted out of office. Tommy Thompson will take the WI seat, Allen the VA seat and we haven't even gotten to 1st termer Bob Casey in PA where the elevator doesn't go to the top floor. Casey is now the only state wide elected official in PA that is a Democrat and the 2 seats PA is losing in the census are currently held by Dems because the GOP has 2/3 of the seats in both State Houses.

Ray and black belt,

There are 22 Democratic Senators coming up for re-election this cycle. Republicans only need a net gain of three seats to gain control of the senate and send Harry Reid to the back of the bus. I expect a lot more than three seats.

When Bush left office gas was $1.82 a gallon, unemployment between 4-5%, over 40 million now receiving food stamps, dollar is lower now -Standard and Poor has downgraded the US from stable when Bush was in office to NEGATIVE! Obama has "Threw Israel under the bus" some Jewish notables such as Alan Dershowitz, Ed Koch(said he may NOT vote for Obama) and Lieberman are VERY UPSET with Obama! Obamacare has given over 1700 waviers to his buddies, Unions with 351,000 -opted out, some large corporations, Financial firms, and members of Congress and now Nasty Nan's district in CA. and 26 states want out-so if his plan is so good why does NO ONE WANT IT?

Unemployment between 4-5% under Bush? That was soon after he took office. When he left, it was 7.8% and rising. Also, let's not forget the DJIA and other major indices had dropped by 50% or more. And during the last summer that Bush was in office, gasoline was over $4.00 per gallon.

You can remember a rosy picture of the Bush administration if you want to, but it's simply not accurate.

When W took office gas was hovering just over $1.50. When he left in January, 2009 it was between $3.50 and $375. Are you in a cave somewhere?

S&P has NOT downgraded the US to "negative"........

Gas was $1.61 a gallon when Bush left office and if you want to put all your money in the Dow go right ahead. The FACTS are that Bush spent a little over $4 trillion in 8 years and Obama is at $3.6 trillion after 2 years. Unemployment has gone up not down (as promised by Obama if we passed the stupid stimulus). You also forget that Nancy and Harry ran Congress from 2007 through 2010 and racked up more debt than the first 100 Congress's combined. Yes, facts do matter to some of us.

Anyone who thinks we would be better off with Obama needs their head examined. He's managed to double the price of gas, raise unemployment, almost double the national debt, added millions of people to food stamps and the welfare rolls and he continues to kill the housing market with all his "financial" reforms. He's great at reading a teleprompter but short on substance. He's in campaign mode all the time but really isn't solving any problems that affect you and I, he wants more government intrusion not less and claims to have the answers but never really shares them with anyone. He's a one man band with more ego than intelligence. Liberal "Progessives" will follow him over the cliff but those of us who enjoy facts over emotion will know better.

Be careful what you wish for Cantor-bury! Because, a Ryan nomination is probably what the Democrats will need to regain control of the House and strengthen their lock on the senate for years to come. See, what we have here is a fundamental GOP failure to accept reality. The reality that says that Americans don't want you messing with medicare before addressing oil subsidies or defense spending or tax loopholes for the rich, etc. So, nominate Ryan, and mediscare will dominate the conversation from now until election day. And, all Obama has to do is sit back on the sidelines and plan his inauguration address.

Let us set aside Medicare for a second. If the deficit and the growth in the debt is the problem, why is it that the Ryan plan allows those to continue for 40 years or more? The GOP keep pushing the myth that it's all about spending cuts, and then hands over the savings to the corporations and the wealthy, instead of using them to pay down the debt, as Clinton did. The other myth is that this will stimulate job growth. We should ask them to explain why we had huge unemployment while tax rates for the upper brackets are at historic lows and our corporations are flush with cash.

Now this is worth reading, from a 16 year old to Michelle Bachmann.

Of course she'll refuse, liars and ignorants don't debate.

        Dear Representative Bachmann,

My name is Amy Myers. I am a Cherry Hill, New Jersey sophomore attending Cherry Hill High School East. As a typical high school student, I have found quite a few of your statements regarding The Constitution of the United States, the quality of public school education and general U.S. civics matters to be factually incorrect, inaccurately applied or grossly distorted. The frequency and scope of these comments prompted me to write this letter.

Though I am not in your home district, or even your home state, you are a United States Representative of some prominence who is subject to national media coverage. News outlets and websites across this country profile your causes and viewpoints on a regular basis. As one of a handful of women in Congress, you hold a distinct privilege and responsibility to better represent your gender nationally. The statements you make help to serve an injustice to not only the position of Congresswoman, but women everywhere. Though politically expedient, incorrect comments cast a shadow on your person and by unfortunate proxy, both your supporters and detractors alike often generalize this shadow to women as a whole.

Rep. Bachmann, the frequent inability you have shown to accurately and factually present even the most basic information about the United States led me to submit the follow challenge, pitting my public education against your advanced legal education:

I, Amy Myers, do hereby challenge Representative Michele Bachmann to a Public Forum Debate and/or Fact Test on The Constitution of the United States, United States History and United States Civics.

Hopefully, we will be able to meet for such an event, as it would prove to be enlightening.

        Sincerely yours,

        Amy Myers

I am surprised Cantor could take the time from the upcoming "bow down to Netanyahu" moment in front of Congress this week. Cantor met privately with Netanyahu the last time he was in D.C. to assure him the Republicans would protect Israel from Obama. He really needs to go to Israel as he undoubtedly already has voting rights there.

Why not? he seems fast to throw ryan under the bus? to run with 60-70% of his own party against the ryan bill. Ryan will not even run for the Senate seat in his own state, for fear of getting his butt kicked.
