If you build it, they will come ... to see Newt

Despite Newt Gingrich incredibly rough presidential rollout, his campaign team says that Gingrich is drawing fairly large crowds for this point in the cycle.

Spokesman Rick Tyler -- he of the "literati" statement -- tells First Read that more than 1,500 people so far have turned out to see Gingrich during his tour through Iowa.

"People are turning out in big numbers," Tyler says. "If anything the turnouts would have been bigger if the media coverage was positive and not negative." His count:

Dubuque - 130
Cedar Rapids - 97
Des Moines - 200
Mason City - 160
Waterloo - 110
Marshalltown - 178
Ames - 160
Carroll - 104
Atlantic - 75
Council Bluffs - 140
Onawa - 68
Sioux City -120

Think Progress:

GINGRICH: [Immigrants] need to pass a test of American history. And candidly, it wouldn’t be bad to have a test like that for young Americans before they start voting.

_____________________________________

Need to pass a test? Doesn't this sound similiar to what happened in the south all those years ago. Voter suppression is real. Did you see the video on Ed's program last night of what happened in Wisconsin? Horrible. Just horrible.

This afternoon I took a walk, mainly because raindrops weren't falling on my head for the first time since like - October - Anyway, two gentlemen approached me to ask if I could direct them to where the Tea Party took place.

They were from the Middle East. And they couldn't have been more gracious. I think it was a father, with his son and then his daughter. Three generations. It made me a little sad to see how people are reacting to President Obama's speech yesterday, especially the uneducated fools - from Newt's party mostly. And they're not immigrants. Just haters of anything that sounds new or different in ideas.

So when they start the testing, sign up Romney first. He's not aware that President Obama did not throw Israel under the bus. btw, who is going to write up the tests? And what if someone fails? Does that mean they can't vote?

Anyway, I hope this family I ran into today enjoy their stay here in America and are treated with kindness wherever they go. Meanwhile, President Obama will see if he can get people to have a fresh outlook to Israel/Palestine. Here's hoping he does.

A number of Jewish groups have responded positively to Mr. Obama's remarks - particularly in light of his comments calling for a non-militarized Palestinian state and denouncing Palestinian efforts "to delegitimize Israel."

"We support the President's vision of a negotiated Israeli-Palestinian settlement with strong security provisions for Israel, and a non-militarized Palestinian state," said the Anti-Defamation League's Robert Sugarman and Abraham Foxman. "We appreciate his direct rejection of a unilateral declaration of a Palestinian state and his understanding that the Hamas-Fatah agreement poses major problems for Israel."

David Harris, the Executive Director of the American Jewish committee, also praised the call for revived negotiations.

"President Obama has sternly warned the Palestinians, and the international community, to stop this senseless drive to try to achieve a state without any negotiated agreement with Israel," he said on Thursday. "The parameters of a two-state solution are just as clear today as they were when Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas walked away from the peace talks last September...The Palestinians must return now to close the deal."

J Street, a pro-Israel, pro-peace organization, added that it "wholeheartedly endorses" the president's proposal.

"[Mr. Obama] is correct in saying that Israel will only find security through granting the Palestinian people their freedom, and the Palestinian people will only achieve freedom if Israel finds security," said J Street president Jeremy Ben-Ami in a Thursday statement.

And Noah Pollak, the executive director for the Emergency Committee for Israel, said via Twitter that Mr. Obama's remarks should come as no shock to Netanyahu.

"I don't think there's anything in this speech that Netanyahu will find surprising or even disagreeable," he Tweeted.

Well, whether yo agree with the President or not, you still have to give him credit for putting it out there knowing he was going to catch all kind of flack for it.

I really feel for Newt. the guy was just stating the obvious about a catastrophic bill passed in the congress only to be clubbed by his unforgiving brethrens. I wish you, Newt, well in your journey to nowhere near the presidency. Please, just keep busting the teabaggers lies.

Retired, I agree. I remember when President Clinton was dealing with Northern Ireland. It was tough and I never thought anything would come of it. President Carter too at Camp David. I think I read that Begin and Sadat were literally heading for their respective automobiles, with nothing accomplished. But President Carter called them back.

So it takes a lot of tenacity, a lot of rethinking outlooks, etc. I hope the same thing happens here. If people sincerely want a good outcome, they will get it. Eventually.

    Pat, Boston, MA..

...and from the people that are actually part of the process..from Salon.

Israeli Prime Minister, Binyamin Netanyahu issued a swift rejection of Obama's remarks. He called the 1967 lines "indefensible." Netanyahu said today after meeting with Obama there is no going back to the 1967 borders.

Although Obama's remarks have been read as a concession to Palestine, Hamas has already spoken out against the president since his speech. According to Ynet News, Hamas spokesman in the Gaza Strip, Sami Abu-Zuhri said:

The (Arab) nation does not need a lesson on democracy from Obama... Rather, Obama is the one who needs the lesson given his absolute endorsement of Israel's crimes and his refusal to condemn Israel's occupation.

This has been the Arab reaction for years and still some people are foolish enough to think they are going to change it.

Geez, could you at least wait until you drop out before you blame it all on the "lamestream" media?

Maybe the media coverage is all negative because.....oh, never mind.

Evidently you never venture out of Boston. There are a lot of little small towns that only have a population of 1000 or less. 200 people is big for these little towns.

You are as usual looking at this through your ultra lefty glasses.

I'm not taking up for Newt because I don't care for him but these are decent numbers for someone that has gotten negative press all week.

You are such a funny blowhard. There may be a lot of such little towns, but the article doesn't mention any of them. As I see that Dennis has pointed out in the post immediately above this one.

Evidently, you never venture out of your own delusions.

Total population of towns mentioned about 700,000, total turn out for Newt about 1500 that is about .2% of the population.

The only people that saw Newt were the ones that could not escape the gravitational pull of his huge fat ass and planet sized head.

I think he had more people come to his book signings. People like his books because they are about things that never happened, like the Confederacy winning the Battle of Gettysburg. Now he wants live in the White House. That will never happen either.

Newt has spent his time out of office romancing not only women but every church in America. With his church hopping landing finally on the Catholic Door Step and trying to have his other marriages annulled. You would think Church Folk would know better.

                Onawa - 68

Sorry...it's not gonna impress anyone. My son's youth soccer game had more people attending it.

If you build an Alzheimers Wing at the Mental Hospital? The Tea Beggers will come riding on Elephants to see their hero "Nutty Newt." The need for old "Nutty Newt" to keep heavily medicated during the circus acts will be very critical. Now the circus music will be playing, and the poltical spewing will be setting the barf meter off the charts. Yes America it will be a mentally ill day at the old polical GOPRNC circus grounds. Their will be speeches by "Bitchy Bachmann" on how the President is not an American Citizen. "Puppet Palin" will spew out how the President is still paling around with terrorists. What a joke America!
