By now, it shouldn't be a surprise that House Republicans are against raising the debt ceiling -- unless it's joined by a significant effort to reduce spending.
But it is surprising when one GOP member says that defaulting on the debt and going through "a period of crisis" could actually be a good thing. California Congressman Devin Nunes (R) said in an interview:
“By defaulting on the debt, in the short and long term, it could benefit us to go through a period of crisis that forces politicians to make decisions” on major policies that affect the budget, he told POLITICO.
Reached for comment to explain how a period of crisis could be beneficial, Nunes spokesman Andrew House tells First Read that the congressman concedes "there would be turmoil" associated with a default. But Nunes believes that the turmoil will force Congress to make decisions to reduce the debt, ending the "idea that you can kick the can down the road."
"It would have our government making decisions that would be beneficial," House adds.

So what the GOP are really saying I don't care if it makes things worst for the middle and poor class people. As long as I get paid and my family is WELL taken care of and my RICH friends won't have to suffer, I will let this happen and there isn't a darn thing you middle and poor class people can do!!!
Think about it.... his/her household finances will continue to be the life of VIP!!! This will have a LARGE negative impact on those of us who DON'T have millions laying around, almost like the crash of wall st, they still was living the lavish life and still received millions from the tax payers!!! Defaulting would be their so called agenda for 2012, they will act as our saviors when they are the reason for the default from the start. GOP/TEAS WE THE PEOPLE WILL REMEMBER YOU MIND TRICKS AND TACTICS IN 2012 AND YOU WILL BE VOTED OUT!!!!
well seeing things putting down repubs, and demo's are just as bad what is sense in cutting back if we raise the debt ceiling. and now the President wants to give money to Egypt, when we can't pay our interest on the loans we already have. and you want to point fingers at the repubs you all are a joke sorry to say calling people who want accountability unintelligent. sad we are in a bad spot and too much kool aid drinking on both sides
Hey Mike,
What about big oil???? The Egyptians are poor, oil companies are the most profitable companies in the world.
Why can't we get these subsidies out of the budget? Because the GOP is owned, lock, stock and oil barrel by big business. There are a few Dems in the same barrel, but it's virtually 100% with the GOP.
Anyone who thinks letting America default is a good plan is not only insane, but not much of an American.
Do you really want to see the fallout? It would make The Great Depression look like a walk in the park. The consequences will haunt our children and grandchildren. We will lose a trust we cannot get back, along with the ability to borrow, and that is not just the government, that is you and me. Good luck with that new car, or buying a house.
There is only one way to avoid passing massive debts to our children. We need to raise taxes on the guys who blew up the economy, and we need to do it now. Let the guys who have profited on the country's pain feel some. It's not like it will hurt them. They have plenty.
They are not creating jobs with these tax breaks, they are pocketing the money, as they have done for the last decade. The jobs are opening up in China and India.
If we want jobs, we are going to have to spend the money on infrastructure. That will not only generate jobs in the short term, but better infrastructure will create jobs in the long term as commerce increases.
I wondered where SPANKY's verbal vomit was and I found it..... SPANKY good to see ya I needed a laugh and your idiocy is always welcome as that.
Ray, for a real cleansing laugh go to the Maddow Blog and read the two posts about Newt's ring tone on his phone and even more fantastic the comments about the Rapture guy and the end of the world this Saturday.
LOL
That's like saying it would be beneficial to have a heart attack so I'd know the importance of lowering my cholesterol. Where do they get these guys?
Do you folks never get out of the house?
The entire world is looking upon the US debt as our REPUBLICAN debt, Clinton had the budget balanced and a plan in place to pay off the US debt within 8 years when Bush gained office, The WORLD knows this!!! Instead, Bush doubled it, then tripled it then worked hard at making it impossible to do anything about his economic ignorance
No one see's this as the American debt overseas, It is seen as the continuation of the Republican debt
q
The debt limit is a self imposed limit. Letting us go into default and undergoing "a period of crisis" Really? For who? A period of crisis for the working class, a period of crisis for the middle class, for the poor, the very people that have been and still are suffering from the last Republican Recession?
Maybe if these idiots did not have a guaranteed income they might think twice, maybe if all of the Good Old Boys Party were not the rich few, the corporations that keep them in office, the oil companies that subsidise their campaigns, maybe they would think differently.
I really think a dose of reality needs to hit the Capital hill GOP in the head. Come live in my world for a while boys and girls, live paycheck to paycheck, clip coupons, sell your house at 22% less than it was worth three years ago just to avoid getting upside down on your loans. Use up your retirement just to make it through the recession so you don't default on your house payments.
My Gosh!
A little history about the Middle East and the deficit.
Yes...President Obama is asking for a recognition of Palestine by pre-1967 borders, despite Israel's successful pre-emptive strike. But that's not issue here. This conflict started way back in 1948. Anyone know or intelligently care to guess what the borders looked like in 1947?
Debt ceiling? I agree that raising it further is a problem. But President Obama wants to handle this in an incremental way...evolution vs. revolution. To default will be traumatic. But now for the not-too-long-ago history. A budget surplass in 2000. In 2008 the US was trillions in debt and still gushing money due to two mismanaged wars and unregulated corporate raiders looting Middle Class America's retirement savings. I forget now, who owned the White House, the Congress and a good part of the Supreme Court from 2000 to 2008. You know, you can't talk your way out of things you act yourself into. Yeah, let's privatize social security so Wall Street can really finish-off the Middle Class. Al Gore addressed this issue in 2000. Things could have been way different if Enron (remember them...kind of friendly with the Bushes) had not loaned its corporate jets to Bush's legal team so they could fly from Texas to Florida as often as needed to assure that Bush became president. Americans---we are sometimes short-sighted---and suffer from amnesia.
