Subscribe to RSSRep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) will not run for the Senate, a GOP aide tells NBC News.
This now opens up the possibility that former Gov. Tommy Thompson (R-WI) will run for the open Senate seat currently held by Sen. Herb Kohl (D).
National Journal first reported the news this morning that Ryan would not run.
*** UPDATE *** Ryan made it official this morning, that he is not running. His office is out with a statement.
"I believe continuing to serve as Chairman of the House Budget Committee allows me to have a greater impact in averting this debt-fueled economic crisis than if I were to run for the United States Senate," Ryan said, adding, "House Republicans have taken bold steps forward in tackling our fiscal and economic challenges - we have led, where others have not. I want to keep building on this progress...."

"I am grateful for the tremendous outpouring of encouragement that I have received from my friends and supporters since Senator Kohl announced he would not seek re-election to the U.S. Senate. For my family and me, the most important factor in making this decision was determining where I could make the biggest difference. Our nation is quickly approaching a debt crisis that will do serious damage to Wisconsinites and all Americans if it is not properly addressed. I believe continuing to serve as Chairman of the House Budget Committee allows me to have a greater impact in averting this debt-fueled economic crisis than if I were to run for the United States Senate.
House Republicans have taken bold steps forward in tackling our fiscal and economic challenges - we have led, where others have not. I want to keep building on this progress and therefore, I will seek to continue serving my employers of Wisconsin's First District as their Representative in the House."

Ryan can look all he wants, "Power envy" can cause unhinged candidates to jump in the race and then shoot themselves in the head. Bring him on!

Well them let him start with being honest about his plan. In his own words, he admitted just how much it will add to the debt over 10 years. But then again, thats how Republicans govern, give everyone a little feel good right now and then pay dearly for it down the road. Been that way with every Republican administration, after Eisenhower that is.
LEONA - While its true, Ryan is happy as chairman of the "money give away committee". Forget 2012! Now 2016 might provide him an opportunity to get the Repub's presidential nomination. But seriously, thats like bestowing "Miss Congeniality" on a distant runner up!

And the list goes on and on now Ryan needs to explain his voting record during the Republican control Congress of the Bush Admin and his role why this country is in the economic mess it got in. Remember he was a part of a lot of that spending he is now so "concern" about.
He is a very stupid man but smart enough to know that his career is totally and completely finished. I for one am so happy he is going far, far away!

Anyone of any intelligence would not want to be in politics. You have to sell your soul to the lobbyists, make promises you can not fulfill, hang out with the rest of the criminals in government, devalue the savings of retirees, ship jobs overseas, run up unemployment with your policies, tell the masses - everything is alright, and look like you know what you are doing in press conferences.
Most people of character can not pull that off.................

Ryan's plan or ANYONE'S plan would be better than Obama's Healthcare plan. If it is so good why did Obama give ALL THE UNIONS and special groups a "OPT OUT" over 1200 groups!! And 26 states do NOT want it!! Next we will have to buy a goat-because goat's milk is good for you-so therefore there should be a mandate for every person to buy a goat and drink goat's milk or pay a fine!! I read a letter that was from a Dr. Stephen Fraser posted on the internet and he sure DID NOT like Obamacare. Besides the 103 Million dollars that has recently been found sneaked into the healthcare bill that NO ONE knew about-not even the Dems. there are a lot of questionable items in the bill. Anyone that has lived in Europe will know it is a Socialized medicene bill. I lived there for a while and it's a waiting game to get into see a Dr. especially a specialist! Pg. 145 Line 15017: An Employer MUST auto enroll employees into Public Option plan. NO CHOICE! On and On-that is why so many has opted out!!

Ryan's plan for Medicare has angered more people in my state than Governor Walker.
Wisconsin's an aging state. We're seeing more people retire than enter the work force.
For those who don't realize, when Ryan went to Washington, there was a budget surplus. By 2010, we were supposed to have the entire deficit paid for. Unfortunately, Ryan voted with his Republican colleagues to turn the surplus into deficits. Turn a booming economy into a recession.

Ryan is not as dumb as he looks. He wouldn't satnd a chance of winning anything in Wisconsin, nor would any other Republican for that matter. Now that we know what the Republican Agenda is, Tax breaks for the Wealthy and taking everything away from the middle and lower class. I think Obama will get another term in office. Governor Walker and ryan have killed the Republican party as far as I am concerned.

If the economy is in the same place as it is now and gas prices are near where they are now, Obama will be in huge trouble for re-election. The 2012 election will be about the Obama record and the disaster of his economic plans.

A fiscal conservative is a leader who takes all of the money in the country and hands it to the rich while raising the debt limit seven times in eight years while telling the people that deficits don't matter there by destroying the economy and blaming the whole thing on the Democratic party.
I love a bunch of left wing fanatics trying to tell the GOP what is best for them. Hello, what is wrong with this picture. Once Ryan know that Tommy Thompson was going to run, he backed off. Thompson is very popular in Wisconsin.
Thompson will win against Feingold any day. Paul Ryan needs to stay where he's at. Who wants to leave what he has now and become a Jr. Senator. He's got big plans and this will definitely help Ryan with his presidential election. Wisconsin isn't ready to let to of Ryan just yet.
I'm thinking Perry / Cain would be completely awesome and a sure winner in 2012. Put Alan West as Sec. of Defense, Paul Ryan as Sec. Treasurer and Jan Brewer as DHS. Sarah Palin could announce that she's signing-on as Perry's fundraiser. That's how you get to a billion $$ to beat The One Who Is Destroying America.

Ryan is doing a fine job in the House and will continue to show financial leadership for many years to come.
As for the Senate, there are 22 Democratic Senators up for re-election this coming election. Republicans only need to win a net gain of three of those seats to gain a majority in the Senate. I fully expect them to gain most of those 22 seats.
We may finally see a day where Democrats will just be something kids will read about in their history books at school.

As Obama goes down in disgrace as the absolute worst mistake this country ever made, he will drag down all those politicians that carry the dreaded "D" after their name.

You have hit on the crux of the problem, no one(by your post it looks like you too) in America wants to pay the price. Everyone wants everything for free! Everybody wants this great Medicare plan and Social Security and tax breaks and ... and they want someone else to pay for it.

This is what I found:
Medicare will be bankrupt in 7 -12 years. Social security will be bankrupt somewhere in the 2030ish time frame. Something has to change? But yet no-one wants to change it right now when we can do something about it.
The entire budget fix can't hinge on more taxes not when our government does such a horrendous job of spending the money it gets.
Ryan's plan while not perfect and still doesn't even go far enough is really the only one I have seen put forward that even remotely comes close what needs to happen to reduce our deficits. There are lots of similarities in Ryan's proposal and Obama's deficit commission's recommendations. The one good thing about Ryan's plan is it got Obama off of is backside and forced him to but forth a budget that tried to include some of his commissions recommendations.
Ryan's plan embarrassed Obama into doing "something" even though it was only a token attempt. Something to try and appease the masses and something to point to during his campaign stops.
