Subscribe to RSSFormer Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee announced late Saturday that - in a "spiritual" decision guided by his relationship with Christ - he will not seek the Republican nomination for president in 2012.
"All the factors say go, but my heart says no. And that's the decision that I've made," he announced at the end of his FOX News show.
The 2008 presidential candidate said that his final decision not to run -- which he arrived at "late this week" -- came in spite of donors' enthusiasm and robust poll numbers even in states outside of his native South. He also noted that his wife and children have been supportive of a run.
"I don't expect everyone to understand this, but I am a believer and a follower of Jesus Christ," he said. "And that relationship is far more important to me than any political office. For me, the discussion and decision is not a political one, not a financial one. It's not even a practical one. It's a spiritual one."
Huckabee, who snatched a surprise victory in the first-in-the-nation Iowa caucuses in 2008, has performed at or near the top of the GOP pack in several national presidential polls.
The announcement came at the end of an hour-long program during which Huckabee interviewed onetime Saved by the Bell star Mario Lopez about healthy eating and then played the bass guitar alongside a camouflage-cowboy-hat-sporting Ted Nugent. Huckabee said at the conclusion of his announcement that he will return to his primetime show - which he could not have continued if he pursued a run -- next week.
The FOX show was followed by a short "special announcement" by possible candidate (and FOX news contributor) Donald Trump. "A lot of people are very happy that he will not be running, especially other candidates," said Trump. "So Mike, enjoy the show, your ratings are terrific, you're making a lot of money, you're building a beautiful house in Florida, good luck."

Jesus told him not to run for president. Coincidentally, He told me not to run, too. And I had the same chance of getting elected as Huckabee.
I'm sure Mr. Huckabee had a good spiritual discussion with his agent before deciding not to run but then he never intended to run in the first place. He is part of a sad, pathetic group of failed politicians who crave attention & cash. They let it hang out there that they might run to get attention for themselves & their book or show or whatever they are promoting but never intend to really run because they like the cash too much. Hooked on the narcotic of fleeting fame & fortune they have become attention addicts.
Well this is not a shock. Although I'm amused he brings up his faith as his excuse not to run. Hate it when people just aren't honest here. His got to much his gaining with his tv shows and media attention to go and run for Prez.

It is so much fun to be right. I told my friend he isn't going to run. He looks like Porky Pig and he wrote a book lecturing America on healthy eating. He is making millions spreading lies and innuendo and pretending he is the new Paul Harvey. I predicted a month ago he wouldn't run and would play the God card to explain why he wouldn't. Did everyone here just start watching politics?
Huckabee is too honest to run. The country doesn't want honesty. The country is mesmerized by people who promise blue skies but are robbing peter to pay paul. Enjoy your gloating, it won't last.

Nothing is honest about claiming that Obama was born in Kenya and spent his youth in Indonesia attending the local Madrassa.
I am a citizen who is left of the majority of Americans but I am sad to see ex-Gov. Huckabee not enter the race. The reason? He would have elevated the debate and not allowed other Republicans to sink to "birther" or "college entry" blather.

Huckabee can't win. This is why he won't run. Not saying no Republican can win, but he can't. The religion thing will scare too many people away, especially if he's telling people that Jesus is actually speaking to him- the liberal side of the media will have him fitted for a straitjacket.
Here's the other thing, which I've wanted to say for a long time, for both sides of this debate- "liberals" aren't socialists. Left wingers can be socialists, but those you righties like to call liberals are not. Liberals are phonies- they will only protest so much, especially in the media, being VERY careful of whose toes they step on. This is because liberals have been afraid of the "socialist" moniker ever since the drunken fool from Wisconsin made unproven accusations about random people he decided he didn't like, in the late '40's and early '50's. McCarthy, in the end, was just another typical Republican- they always need someone to hate, or else they're not happy. He got what he deserved- hepatitis.
Today, liberals whine on and on about Planned Parenthood, why we should call Chinese people "Asians", and a whole lot of other stuff that doesn't matter. It's all BS- if they were "socialists", there would be a lot more of the private sector in this country unionized, and they'd shut the country down if the garment workers weren't being paid enough money. For one example, President Clinton signed NAFTA into law- which means he's not even a liberal, never mind a socialist. This is another reason why the Becks and Limbaughs of the world are idiots- because when they call these people socialists, they are once again spouting out their hind ends about that which they know nothing.

He is one of the smart ones. He said himself on his show that it is going to be VERY tough to beat Obama in 12. He is probably getting ready for that. With a very light field of Republican candidates , Obama will have no problem of winning a 2nd term.

Just as I predicted and it was pure economics. Huck can now keep his gig at Fox, make a fortune, not have to work very had at it and never answer a real question. If he ran for president he would have to raise tons of money, try to defend the many lies he's told on Fox over the years, and do all this in a loosing campaign. He knows no current republican can beat President Obama.

Maybe Mr. Huckabee finally realized that the Tea Party stance to cut services for the weakest members of our society is not very consistent with his Christian beliefs. Or, maybe he just realizes that while he had a good chance to win the Republican nomination, with the current stance that the Tea Party has taken, reasonable compromise that could lead to political success in the general election was out of reach.
