Subscribe to RSSEL PASO, Texas -- Expect to hear a lot more about immigration in the next two years, but not because anything is likely to get done on Capitol Hill.
In a speech that had all the hallmarks of a campaign -- the hand shaking, the outdoor event, chants of “Yes, we can” -- President Obama sought to build a “movement” around comprehensive immigration reform.
“We need Washington to know that there is a movement for reform gathering strength from coast to coast,” Obama said here steps from the U.S.-Mexico border. “That’s how we’ll get this done.”
And there were plenty of political shots to go around, especially for Republicans.
"We have gone above and beyond what was requested by the very Republicans who said they supported broader reform as long as we got serious about enforcement," Obama said. "But even though we've answered these concerns, I suspect there will be those who will try to move the goal posts one more time. They'll say we need to triple the border patrol. Or quadruple the border patrol. They'll say we need a higher fence to support reform. Maybe they'll say we need a moat. Or alligators in the moat.
"They'll never be satisfied. And I understand that. That's politics."
The president, however -- in his first trip here to the border since taking office -- did not offer any new details on what he would like to see in an immigration-reform bill, nor did he press a timeline. (The specifics he offered today were similar to what was offered in his July 2010 speech.) Aboard Air Force One earlier today, NBC’s Athena Jones reports that White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said he would not preview their legislative strategy.
One thing is clear, pressing this issue publicly is important to Obama’s reelection chances. Hispanics are the largest-growing group in the country, according to 2010 Census data. They now comprise 16% of the U.S. population, yet they comprised just 9% of the 2008 electorate. And they broke overwhelmingly for Obama, 67%-31%.
President Obama also talked about how immigrants have made great contributions to the country – in creating businesses like Intel and Google, that they, for the most part, come to America looking for work and to help their families. But he tried to strike a moderate tone, again saying immigrants who came here illegally and broke the rules need to pay a fine, learn English and go to the back of the line.
“Everyone recognizes the system is broken,” Obama said. “The question is, will we summon the political will to do something about it?”
He blamed “politics,” “rhetoric,” and “Washington games” on why comprehensive immigration reform hasn’t passed in Congress.
“The question is whether those in Congress who previously walked away in the name of enforcement are now ready to come back to the table and finish the work we’ve started,” the president said. “We have to put the politics aside. And if we do, I’m confident we can find common ground. Washington is behind the country on this.”
He continued, “[T]there is a consensus around fixing what’s broken. Now we need Congress to catch up to a train that’s leaving the station.”
The president now heads to Austin, Texas, for two fundraisers for his reelection.

The GOP still stalled the Dream Act (even though the originally supported it). It did pass in the House and in the Senate but was filibustered.

The Repubs like the status quo on immigration just fine. Business gets a supply of cheap labor that will work under dangerous conditions, and the Republican pols have an issue they can demagogue to keep their xenophobic base in a perpetual frenzy. The fact that Obama has done more than Bush did to stem the flow of illegal immigrants is something they won't acknowledge.
Baseless, angry nonsense. He's provided plenty of leadership and led on issues across the spectrum from tackling the highest health-costs in the Western world, to leading on brokering peace in the middle-east (that ultimately failed as a result of Israel), to the war on terror by expanding drone use to Osama Bin Laden, repeal of DADT, attempt to pass immigration reform with the DREAM act, attempted to reform No Child Left Behind, led in renewed missile reduction treaties, financial sector reform, clean energy initiatives, and that is just what I'm able to think of in the few minutes writing this.
He's done more for the cause of reform, progress and innovation than any president since FDR... I don't know where you get this "lack of leadership", "lack of cooperation" nonsense.

If at every opportunity you enforce the law and deport illegal aliens from jobs, schools, and whenever they have contact with law enforcement, the word would get around and sooner rather than later self deportation would start occuring. The law is the law and sneaking in here or being here illegally is against the law. I wish I could pick and chose which laws I wanted to be enforced against me and you, but the fact is if you or I break the law, you or I have to pay a fine and / or penalty. I didn't write the laws, I didn't write the constitution, I didn't even ask the illegal invaders to invade my country, but I expect the laws to be enforced equally whether I like it or not. What's the value of immigration?
In 2007, the President's Council of Economic Advisers tried to balance these gains and losses. They totaled all the gains, subtracted the losses and concluded that our present immigration conferred a net benefit of ... hold your excitement ... somewhere between 0.22% of national income and 0.60% of national income..
(And as economist George Borjas notes, the CEA could reach the higher end number, 0.6%, only by ignoring the economic harm done by new immigration to the immediately prior immigrants.)
That seems a poor payoff for the disruption caused by mass migration. Imagine if your kid's classroom went from zero non-English-speakers to 10 in just a couple of years. Then you are told that this turmoil is adding just fractions of a penny to the national income? Surely you'd ask: Why are we doing this?
It does not have to be this way. If we chose our immigrants differently, immigration would upgrade the average skill level of the U.S. population. (As is, 31% of immigrants have not completed high school.) If we chose our immigrants differently, they could contribute more in taxes than they require in benefits. (As is, immigrants are 50% more likely to be poor than the native-born.)
Back in the 1950s and 1960s, immigrants arrived with higher skills and soon gained higher incomes than the native born. That's how immigration still works in Canada and Australia. Their immigration systems are race-neutral and favor prospective immigrants who arrive with language skills, advanced degrees or capital to invest.

Democrats are willing to give everyone's future away (except for their families of course) to rule over a smoldering garbage pile, rather than work hard to fix a nations problems.
Even Canada is starting to review their immigration and visa policies. They are tightening up on giving their work visas as they believe they are taking jobs away from Canadians.
The legal term is "illegal alien". Obama keeps perpetuating the myth that the GOP keeps "moving the goalpost" on border security. Wrong. The GOP is like the vast majority of voting citizens who have consistently called to have the entire border secured. That remains the objective to be done first and the border remains wide open. Got that Obama?
The bottom line is that most illegal aliens here will never get amnesty. Ain't gonna happen so get use to that reality. All we have to do is clarify the law that if you came here illegally and then did anything else illegal, like use forged documents for any reason, then you are permanently barred from ever being a citizen. That alone gets rid of most illegal aliens here now.

I suspect that pjammed and KevinQQ like the current system only because it gives them a whole group of people they abuse, victimize, persecute, and dehumanize without being accused of being politically incorrect.
Republican politicians like the current system because it provides an entire class of 'untouchables' who will work for low wages but have no rights and can not vote. They also like the current system because it allows them to pander to the vote of every bigot in the country, and because there is a lot of money (and therefore campaing contributions) to be had by implementing expensive border walls, immigration prisons, etc. Not to mention the fact that it gives the drug cartels a second source of income, which also means more money (and campaign contributions) to be had by selling guns to the cartels.
Personally, I did not think the Obama proposals went far enough in ending abuses and providing justice, but at least he has a plan.
The Republican plan is 'keep things as they are, pander to bigotry and hate, and throw endless amounts of so-called enforcement money down a rathole, while doing nothing to end unauthorized immigration. Increasingly expensive attempts at enforcement can not unauthorized immigration, because so-called enforcement does not address the root cause, which is available jobs.
Besides TRUE immigration reform, the only way to end unauthorized immigration is to completely TANK the American economy, something the new Republican Party has proven itself quite good at.

Implementing immigration rules that are in our national self interest would cost nothing and eliminate the need to spend vast sums of money on ugly walls and other ineffectual, but collossally expensive methods.
My question has to do with citizenship. Doesn't the Dream Act mock the process of citizenship? It does to me.
Having known many people who entered the US through the process I can say that while the illegals are desirous of being citizens, the Dream Act is not the way to do it.
Yes, change the laws so that babies born on US soil to illegal immigrants are not automatically US citizens.

The DREAM Act acknowledges that those who risk their lives for their country ought to be accorded with citizenship. It would be disgraceful if it were otherwise.
No, I don't think that anyone should risk their lives for citizenship, when there is no war in progress. (The big wars come to mind with refugees, which is not the case, here.) They should go through the process.

Obama here is just catering to the Latino vote. If he was really serious about immigration reform, he would have done something about it when the Democrats held all three houses. Now that he no longer has the influence to initiate legislation, he suddenly becomes massively concerned about the plight of our undocumented population.

First, we are ALL imigrants in that Native Americans are the only true Americans in the context of this North American continent.
Now that that fact is on the table. Another to add is that we are all tied, all issues are tied, all actions taken are tied together in our moniker; WE ARE The United States of America. We are especially tied together economically, ALL OF US! When I look at the jobs numbers I say "There but by the grace of God go all of us." That is protective collective thinking though and you aren't really into that are ya Spank?
And finally, yes, I supported Bush in his effort to get immigration reform done. We are a melting pot; always have been, always will be. By mere definition if by nothing else. Sad W couldn't get that done either.
That would be the strain on health and emergency services the conservatives are constatntly whining about. Or the education inequities. Or the inflated unemployment numbers. To name but a few.
All of these things, the economy, jobs, the deficit, immigration are inter-related. Which is but one reason why leaders need to be more than one issue, one dimensional figures.

Fielden - the illegals are a huge drain. Education inequities come from resource allocation. Take a look at LA - so much of the money goes to ESL programs. Plus illegals are a hot bed of poverty, crime and just not that focused on education.

Reminding the people, to whom immigration reform matters, that he did exactly what the Republicans wanted as a condition for immigration reform and that they still have no intention of moving on the subject is something more Presidents and politicians should do.
I'd like to see politicians holding rallies informing their constituents of how certain groups of politicians are obstructing important issues through their refusal to work together.
The fact that that also works to enhance voting and popularity is a great benefit.

He's authorized increased border patrol and INS hiring as well as ordering the deployment of National guard to the border. Additionally he authorized further construction of physical barriers. These were the things the Republicans requested before they said they'd come back to talk about immigration.

Wow Matt...You must drink a lot of kool aid. Because Obama not cutting the increase in the number of border agents authorized by Bush is not the same as Obama himself increasing their numbers. Of course the directive issued by the Obama adminstration ordering those agents to NOT arrest or detain most illegal aliens undermines the positive effect of having more agents. Plus the Obama administration has ordered border agents to first use less than lethal ammo when defending themselves. If that doesn't work...THEN the border agents can use real bullets.
As far as Obama sending the National Guard to the border... big deal...so did Bush... and they both pulled the same worthless stunt by not allowing the National Guard to carry weapons or to be involved in the apprehension of illegal aliens.
Point out one additional inch of physical barrier that Obama authorized. The truth is Obama and the progressives stripped away all of the funding to construct the border fence.
But all is not lost......
In trying to protect the citizens of this country from the growing invasion of illegal aliens, Arizona has plans to build the fence despite the Obama administration defunding the federal project. Anyone can (and everyone should) donate money for the construction of the border fence here http://www.keepazsafe.com/ ... what better way to demonstrate to those in D.C. that they do, in fact, still work for us! And as their employer.... if we want a fence built to better secure the border...we will damn well build it!

The back of the line starts in their country of origin and they need to know english before they can become citizens. As for the people already here as far as I'm concerned they lost their rite to citizenship when they illegally entered the country so they should be deported.
Businesses have to be held accountable as well if it wasn't for their love of cheap labor, these people couldn't get jobs. So you have to punish the Businesses as well with hefty fines at 1st and repeat offenders should lose there licenses to do business in the state they were penalized in.

How is speaking about one of the most important issues to a large swath of the population purely for reelection? The fact that Republicans are blocking any attempt at reforming immigration is important and people should know that. Alot of people may have accidentally voted for a Republican, not realizing that they are a bigoted obstructionist.
Reminding people why they voted for Obama and how ideologically different he is then the conservatives is important, and so what if it happens to also be useful in getting re-elected?

Obama showed great character and courage in his speech on immigration reform. The GOP is motivated by hatred and greed. They find nothing wrong with exploiting so called illegal immigrants, but everything wrong with granting these immigrants a path to citizenship.

my husband was deported cause he came in illegally. he has no criminal record. he speaks english. he is a christian. he has 2 handicap sisters, 1 paraplegic 1 mentally disabled. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE for a honduras citizen to get a visa to come to america, especially if they are poor. so people please stop saying "if they would just enter legally" and instead say "if the government would just allow latinos a fighting chance to even recieve visas". thank you and God bless

RVZ -- yes, she is saying something close to that. Look at immigation policy. Citizens of certain countries are favored (think Cuba, Viet Nam). People with money are favored (think of Rupert Murdoch, who got a fast-track citizenship so he could own FOX), people who can find family here are favored for relocation. People who have some "skill" we deem in short supply (educators, for example). But we don't allow people with manual labor experience in. If people could get a visa that way, they would. That's why we need immigration REFORM: as it is, immigration is a political tool.
So Kate do we need more manual laborers? Do we get to have a say so in who gets in?
We need educated, skilled workers. We do not need uneducated, unskilled workers.

If at every opportunity you enforce the law and deport illegal aliens from jobs, schools, and whenever they have contact with law enforcement, the word would get around and sooner rather than later self deportation would start occuring. The law is the law and sneaking in here or being here illegally is against the law. If you were a good wife, you would go to Honduras to be with him and help him take care of his 2 sisters. The law is pretty much non-existent down there so you shouldn't have a problem sneaking in and staying there. The law here says nothing about latinos or any nationality, it just says ILLEGAL. I don't care if you're green, blue, pink, or orange, or if you're Chinese, English, Spanish or whatever, if you come here illegally and get caught here illegally you need to be arrested and deported. If you don't like the laws here in the US, you are free to leave anytime and go where you want to go and break all the laws you want, when you want too. The world according to tea-publicans is that when former President Bush went to other parts of the country and gave speeches (which he did often), he was just dropping by to say "howdy".
How many citizens and FR posters who complain about illegals pick strawberries, lettuce, and other fruits and vegetables for a living? How many of those complainers eat those same strawberries, etc. and enjoy the relatively low price? It is easy to blame President Obama for the problem--while ignoring that Obama has actually increased the crackdown on employers which hire illegals and deported more illegals than Bush--than it is to ask why during the 11 years the GOP held the majority in the House and most of those years also the Senate plus the 6 years they held the House, Senate and White House the GOP didn't fix the immigration problem? Democrats were willing to work with them. The reason they didn't is clear and we see it in the conservative posts here--if the GOP had fixed it, they couldn't demonize a group that is exploited or make it a campaign slogan every two years.
It's time for both parties to simply get busy and fix the immigration system.

First, conservatives have decimated our school system to the point where we do not have enough qualified high tech employees. Second, but more importantly, foreign workers are cheaper.
