Indiana Congressman Mike Pence (R) -- who had mulled running for president at one time -- today announced his candidacy for Indiana governor.
In a video, Pence says:
I've been humbled by the outpouring of encouragement we've received from people across this state, and it's for that reason today I'm announcing my candidacy for the Republican nomination for governor of Indiana in 2012.
While a formal campaign kickoff will come later, I wanted you to be the first to know that I'm in this race. We think now is the time to move forward.

Among Indiana residents who are paying attention, this is relatively old news. The Democrats will have a credible candidate if Former House Speaker John Gregg runs. Let's be clear, Mike Pence is not a shoe-in for governor. He panders to the tea party, but there are a lot of independents in Hoosier land.
Pence is one of the first Tea Party members of the House to recognize he can't possibly win re-election next year. They have so badly abused the GOP majority and forced an unrealistic, repressive, regressive agenda that the voters will turn out most of them. He's not a freshman solon, but he would have joined the stream of TP frosh exiting by the back door.
A footnote:
With Mitch Daniels cutting planned parenthood, cutting public education funding by allowing money to be given to private schools and being uncompromising to the point that Democratic legislators had to leave the state, Indiana could follow in the path of the the great state of Wisconsin.
Does he have to give up his seat in the senate to run? I hope so. He needs to go! I also hope Gregg beats him in Indiana and I think that is plausible now that purple states are realizing the Republican spin game for the benefit of a wealthy few.
Hey, I'll have you know we're not there yet. Although the Supremes did agree to hear the case, which will be briefed this month and argued in early June. When there will be a decision is open to question. If there are dissents and stuff, it could drag out a while, but the decision itself would probably be made before Prosser leaves office at the end of July.
So, to be fair, it doesn't look promising. But that's only one case. There are others also in the works.
Stay tuned. ;-)
You are so right Ron. life long hoosier here and I think there are enough sound bites to sink this radical tea bagger. I'm not sure who is worse....good ol ditch Mitch or wannabe teabagger Pence. Very scary
Pence will win that race from what I have read. I do not presume to know anything about the local politics there so I can't personally predict with any authority.
Doesn't affect me anyway so whatever happens is Indiana's problem.
ITM
Isn't Texas burning? I guess we know the location of Hell. Go to Texas all of you!
ITM....
There is a petition to have the Trumpster 'bounced' from driving the pace car at the Indianapolis 500!
I know that you would never afix your signature to such a petition....but......
One more thing.......Texas is burning, and Slick Rick is pissed that President Obama addressed the tornado ravaged states, and not Texas burning......
But, hey, Slick Rick......hasn't Texas left the Union? (OMG, I gotta get a passport to get out)
So chilled, what you're applying is that Obama is a King? He decides who gets Federal help and who doesn't based on politics? Interesting.
3WolvesandaMoom...wow, that's different....
But you can call Obama King, if you like, but I call him President!

Texas...You need some more federal money ??? Oh I forgot you don't need it
Yea, RIch Perry is another right wing con artist and phony. He has used tarp money to reduce his states deficit and then says there is too much government and wants to secede from the union. This moron is a real piece of work. But what can we expect he is a Republican.
If any living person in Indiana votes for this guy, they need to have their head examined.
First, I know this is off subject BUT...There is no comparison to the commemoration of a great moment in our collective history in NYC today by PRESIDENT OBAMA to the dog, pony and elephant show being presented in SC this evening. That will be all skwawk, talk and tizzies over the WIN for America this week but take note of where they wish to take the country. Be not deceived by their smiles and breathy desperate calls for fiscal sanity. They have lost ALL sanity including that of the fiscal variety and the last decade just proves it.
Now, Pence? Pander to the RIGHT much? Nothing there that the whole of America will buy in the end. Pitting the faithful against the scientific will not work this time. This is just for prostheletizing and demogogeury of FAR religious right ideology and spouting political policies to support such. Control, it is about control!
So yesteryear. And we children of the 60's who survive ,some of whom had their dreams permanently derailed on campuses all across America back then, will always remember the causes for which we stood then and stand still today. It was the same message from the right then: BE VERY AFRAID!
I refuse.
Missy: I am going to watch the debate tonight, too. Just to see what the crazies are going to come up with next. You get to the point where the Repubs cannot be any more petty, untruthful, and vitriolic than they have in the past. As for religion? Whose? They don't own that any more than they own the moral highground, fiscal responsibility, or facts. It should be a real show!!! I only wish some of the other candidates were going to appear, Bachmann, Palin, even Romney. That would be an even better evening of entertainment, watching the ignorance flow.
Me too on the watching Cathy M. I know I'll be yelling at the screen most of the time. LOL I do that a lot here in Texas. My neighbors know me when they hear me.
It really should be a yawn. It isn't like we haven't heard their message before. It hasn't changed in 40 years.
..lol...wake me when it over !
Better people than Pence couldn't go to from the House to the White House. He improves his chances at the White House by being a governor. I don't think he's running AWAY from an electoral beatdown for his House seat. If his constituents were dumb enough to send him there to begin with, they're dumb enough to send him back!
Perhaps the Republicants should adopt as their theme song "Send in the Clowns" (sorry Sondheim)...
It seems as if there is an election coming and all they are saying is — "well - I'm thinking about it - but you go first - no you go first - no after you - What would be great if none of them ran!
Oh, Paul, thanks for the reminder about that famous old comedic movie team:
"After you, Alphonse!"
"No, after you, Gaston!"
And on and on.
So now, the question is, who thinks maybe Michelle Bachmann and Newt Gingrich qualify as Ma and Pa Kettle?
I was (not any more) a Republican for 40years , as I hange my head in shame , I have become very Indenpent and will vote for the person and not party line ever again
irish:
How many times have we heard this line coming from a LIBERAL. You know damn well you were never truly in the Republican camp.
From the guy (ITM) that constantly says “you don’t know me”.
WOW !!
Dennis, Irish is not alone. I have met and read letters from many, many former Republicans who are absolutely disgusted with the party now.
Let's keep in mind, of course, they almost NEVER become Democrats - but they re-register as Independents and are more likely after that to vote for Democrats rather than Republicans. The problem is, the sense of disillusionment is so strong that often those Independents don't vote at all.
Certainly Democratic and Independent registration is much higher now in Florida than 2 years ago. As one of the more important states for next year's election, Florida may give a clue about how disillusioned and disgusted voters act. The primaries will be extremely important for strategic analysis of how to campaign in the state.
You and Irish should expect to see a serious effort to suppress "unreliable" voters such as Irish - by using tried-and-true methods of dirty politics and messaging intended to arouse their alienation. That of course goes along with other forms of voter supperssion - all those bills about ID cards, students having to return to their homes if they want to vote, and more.
Well, I'm a very proud and committed Democrat, always have been. Irish, if you want let's see how we can help you find your way to a welcoming political party!
@John A. - Here in Florida the current republicans are doing everything in their power to make it harder for minorities, new voters and anyone else who might vote them out. Watch for the new redistricting that will favor only the right. I am an Independent who got fed up with both the repubs and dems. But I will NEVER vote for any of the current repubs/tbaggers.
And Indiana moves ever closer to the edge of the cliff. At some point I hope the folks in Carmel and Fishers, so intent on protecting their wealth, come to realize that you can foster only so many financial/social conservatives before you finally end up with a Nero.
oh boy, another republicn prostitute! Indiana voters take a good long look at what is happening in wisconsin, michigan, ohio. do you really want a republican running your state?
You mean states where they are turning back the union control?
Maybe Indiana voters should look next door at Illinois and see what Dem politicians and Unions can do to a state's economy.
Good for Indiana taxpayers. Bad for unions................oh well.
Pence is a win-win.
If Pence wins the governorship of Indiana, all I can say is GOOD LUCK TO THE CITIZENS OF INDIANA, Your in for quite a ordeal. Hw ia the phoniest politician I have ever heard next to Bush.
Andrew:
You sure seem to know a lot about other states politicians. What is your Democrat politician doing to help YOU?
You need to worry about your own politicians and stay out of every other states business especially when you don't know what the hell you are talking about.
