Disability-rights group steps up Ryan protests

The disability rights group, ADAPT, whose members are lining the halls of Longworth protesting the block-grant provisions in Rep. Paul Ryan's 2012 budget have escalated their protest --  11 members of the group were sitting in the front room of his personal office chanting, "We want Ryan. No more block grants."

Those members started to wheel themselves out, and at the urging of the leader of the group, stood and sat in the middle of the hall and chanted, "We want Ryan."

Dozens of Capitol Police have gathered near the protesters, and they've pulled up busses outside, so arrest of some of the members seems imminent.

Yesterday, 91 members were arrested after staging a protest in the Cannon House office building. They were able to meet with Ryan's chief of staff yesterday as well.

Yeah cause I'm sure he expected everyone who stands to have the benefits cut back to be happy about it.

And that's the real thing isn't it. People are always willing to see programs cut, just not their own. Thing is, those who are screaming the loudest have the most to lose, it's those people who want to keep their benfitss at their current inflated levels that dont understand that it is unsustainable in the long term, but they dont care, it's all about the here and now for them.

Well, if we must make cuts to the disabled, disadvantaged and underpriveledged, how about we cut the money for the Disabled Oil Companies, or the disadvantaged farms corporations which earned millions, or the multi-billion dollar earning underpriveledged multi-nationals..... OH that's right, THEY DON'T EXIST. They are all earning millions and billions and yet, they need to take additional money from the actual PEOPLE in wheelchairs to pay for their tax credits and incentives.

How can you possibly be talking about "those people who want to keep their benefitss (sic) at their current inflated levels" when the average disability benefit is not even $1100. Yet at the same time, Paul Ryan is talking about reducing the top tax rate form 35% to 25%. Thus, the top 5% of earners (making more than $100,000) would be paying less tax EACH, than the average disabled person receives to live on for the entire year.

The entire Republican party, in supporting plans such as Rep. Ryan's, indicates that they are not elected to represent "the People" unless they truly believe that a corporation is a person.

dirp101,

Excellent source. "Shared sacrifice" has been the poor and middle class sharing the sacrifice while the rich take more and more money from our country without any strings attached about how they spend it. I say tax them high 50-60 even 70% and give them incentives to reinvest in America and America alone. No other country will do. if they want to leave, let them. Lots of enterprising people still around to invest in America for Americans benefit.

Maybe they can file some ADA claims against the Feds. That's be funny as hell.

I once represented a bowling alley. Dude in a wheel chair sued because no "access." Oh yeah and the urinal was 1/2 inch too high per ADA Regs.

Simple extortion. Guy made $3,500 off every single business on the entire street. He never even went inside any of them.

Yep a fine law that one.

Round of applause for the "dude in the wheel chair" because he paved the way for other disabled people on that street to use those businesses. If you've never spent time in a wheel chair, your best bet Spanky is to not criticize those who live their lives in one.

    Spanky

How could he go inside any of them unless there was "access", as a lawyer you just blew your own case.

Forrest - That's the best part about the ADA suits. THe defense cannot win, and one sided attorney's fees.

I raised that very question - he did not go inside, but see that also does not matter. A violation is a violation.

So we [the defense] paid him some cash to go away. And so do thousands of businesses everyday.

    Good stuff, right?

Oh and Jody - the dude is a lawyer himself and guess how he makes all his money? think he's helping anyone but himself? Nope. But you just can't help to appauld him Jody? Sad how easily manipulated you are.

That's right were you lost it Spanky, How can he go inside if there is "no access"?

I'm no lawyer, but telling the court he has never been inside the place certainly supports his claim of "no access". I believe you when you say you can't win one.

Again fellas - the law is totally rigged. The business owners cannot, under any circumstances win. There will always be so minor code variation.

But see they don't have to go anywhere near the business. They simply file a complaint and BAM extort between $3,000 and $10,000 per business.

But see the Jody's of the world, having never owned a business see not problem with that.

Just google ADA lawsuit abuse. There are a ton of really pissed off people. But hey it keeps a lot of lawyers employed and everybody loves lawyers, right?

Right Jody, you applaud the dude extorting the system? That's great Jody.

The companies CAN win by just following the law. They've only had 21 years to comply. The architectural barriers part of the law (such as urinals to high and front door access) are fairly black and white. Any company can get an ADA inspector out, check the codes, and do the retrofitting they need to do and then, boom! They are in compliance. It is not hard, there is even grant money out there to help small businesses make the changes. And again, they've had 20 years. There is no excuse. The lawyer guy maybe has his niche business and that may be how he is making money, but he IS doing the rest of us a favor by forcing compliance.

If a company didn't measure up to a fire code after years of those laws/codes being enforced, would that be ok with you? What if they said, "but there has never been a fire?" The code is the code and the law is the law. If busnesses aren't complying after 21 years, it is their own fault and stupidity if they get sued.

Cheers to ADAPT. What better way to point out the draconian nature of Paul Ryan's budget plan than for him to see or meet the real disabled people his plan affects. Ryan's plan is not courageous, it is cruel. It takes from those who struggle and gives to those who already have. There are ways to cut spending but Ryan's plan does nothing to balance the debt for 72 years; it adds trillions to the deficit and the debt because the cuts he makes in programs is handed to the 2% richest in the form of additional tax cuts. These are real people, Mr. Ryan, they are as valuable and deserving as any other American. Why is it conservatives no longer believe in fairness, no longer believe in taking care of the elderly, the disabled, the poor, the sick?

Since the turn of the last century, have Republicans ever cared about the most vulnerable in our society ?

Didn't the Republicans call FDR a traitor to the American aristocracy ?

The seniors who applauded Ryan, are they the same ones who are in favor of reducing money local school boards get from the state ? Wait until all the uneducated delinquents start dropping out of the useless WI schools. Ryan should remember, there is no requirement that you be able to read to vote. The WI voters will be able to take their voting plans into the booths for centuries to come and the only letter they may still be able to recognize will be the letter D, like on their report cards.

Yup - Cheers to ADAPT for sure. Another lobbying group, making a little noise, getting on the news, and lobbying for their piece of the pie. Trouble is, the pie is getting smaller. And we're all supposed to be against Special Interest groups in Washington, correct?

You Libs just don't get it, do you? The country is broke, it has no money. Cuts are going to be made, and they'll be made to programs everyone doesn't want to have cut, but will be cut regardless. The government has over-extended itself, it has made promises it cannot keep. It has for decades wastefully spent money that we the taxpayers have trusted them with on programs that now require massive reforms to survive.

You can talk fairness. You can talk everyone paying their "fair-share". It doesn't matter, the money just isn't there anymore. There are "ways to cut spending"? How? When are the Democrats going to make a real proposal? Who are the Democrats going to tax? The rich? Go ahead, you could tax all the wealth away from the rich and still wouldn't come close to funding the entitlements. When is the so-called "Gang of Six" in the Senate going to make a proposal? It's at the point either someone steps up like Ryan has, or they become irrelevant to the process.

The Liberals have only one plan, to demagogue the plans the Republicans have.

The Democrats "care"? They care all right. They care about spending the money we have to borrow today on themselves, and leaving it to the next generations to figure out how to pay for it.

JoAnnaSmith1: how about we cut the reduction of the tax revenues made in December 2010, at the incistence of the Republican Senate ?

How about we "cut" the tax incentives given to the oil industry? Or farms which made over $100,000 (before any tax credits/government incentives) last year ? Or companies like GE ?

Yes, the group that earned the top 10% paid more than 50% of the taxes, because they earned more than 50% of all of the income!!! The taxes paid, as a proportion of Gross income (not ADJUSTED gross income, which is a fiction of the tax code) is less the higher your total income becomes. When you are including people who do not earn enough to take them out of poverty, then it easy to demagogue the 50% of Americans who pay no taxes.

The greatness of a country is judged in part in how it takes care of those who have the least. I happen to think the USA is great enough to take care of its poor, elderly and disabled. If that means that those who have the most might have a little less, then, as the current Speaker would say, "so be it." That members of the Republican party would rather eliminate the middle class and have the poor die is self evident from the plans the party has put forth this year.

I know America is better than what has been exemplified by many members of the current House majority, the possible and actual persons running for the GOP nomination for President and the Republican members of the state legislatures and governors.

Sure. Go ahead. And by the way, looking at who signed that legislation, I see names like Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Leader Harry Reid, and President Barack Obama. All Republicans, right? Please, look it up! I "incist".

How about we "cut" the tax incentives given to the oil industry? Or farms which made over $100,000 (before any tax credits/government incentives) last year ? Or companies like GE ?

How about we do this! How about we do that! That's all you hear from you Liberals. When are your leaders going to make a proposal on the budget? You think the USA is great enough to take care of its elderly, poor, disabled? Great. I do too! But only if there are the jobs to support paying the taxes need to fund those programs. The Fed just downgraded its overall growth predictions for the year. The S&P just warned on the countries bond rating. A devalued dollar has kicked inflation up a few notches. We're about to hit the debt ceiling. Does that sound like a healthy economy to you? Certainly not one that can be expected to take care of everyone that needs it. Ryan and the Republicans are addressing these issues. What are the Democrats doing about it?

I know America is better than what has been exemplified by many members of the current House majority,

Really? You mean the House that is trying to put the country back on firm footing economically? That one? The one that replaced the one that was there for four years and deficit spent to the tune of $5 trillion dollars? You like that previous one better?

"Why is it conservatives no longer believe in fairness, no longer believe in taking care of the elderly, the disabled, the poor, the sick?"....

Because the first mental exercise one has to master to be a true conservative is "always blame the victim"... sick people didn't take care of themselves, the unemployed are lazy, crime victims shouldn't live in such bad neighborhoods, poor people are just stupid, shiftless leeches etc.

See once you've really mastered this trick you can simply ignore the misfortunes of others and concentrate on protecting the precious things which belong to rich privileged folks like yourself. Bad things really only happen to bad people see?

It's all about being self righteous and hyper judgemental!

Most of these right-wingers consider themselves pious Christians. So being able to totally ignore what Jesus actually taught and said is another prerequisite as well.

I never said anything about printing money, I would tax the pants off corporations that want to sell products produced abroad at slave wages in the USA at the expense of the American worker. You tell me the corporations will leave, let them leave, your free market capitalism tells me some corporation will then fill their place and make the product here, employ Americans, pay fair wages, taxes, and settle for a fair profit. Why should corporate America get all the tax breaks, when they are posting the largest quarterly profits the world has ever seen. Have they no responsibility to America. Three years ago we used tax money to bail them out because they were too big too fail. Workers can't even get a 3% raise, they are losing income. I would tax the corporations until they were down to a 5% profit, if they don't like that, the free market theory says somebody would be happy to fill the void and make a 5% profit on America's business. That kind of money won't be left laying on the table! When Americans are making money by manufacturing products to spend their money on in America then everybody will be paying income tax, sales tax and not depending on government services for food, shelter, and medical care. We will have plenty of revenue to pay our debt and bills. Then the corporations can slowly go back to screwing us. That was my plan. Its about jobs, good jobs. The only thing in the way is corporate greed, they would rather have max profits employing the Communist Chinese than reasonable profits employing Americans. Some here have called me a liberal communist, what a joke. I spent decades working with and representing hard working American men and women of every race, color, and creed, they only wanted a fair days wage for a fair days work. The corporations you are so worried about are literally business partners with Communist China,. The deal goes like this: we will screw our workers, and government in America by you allowing and helping us to super-screw your workers in China and we will spilt this pie down the middle.

Is that patriotic, is it fair, is it decent, does it feel Christian, does it make you proud of them. Personally I can't support it, it is simply greed, it is past capitalism. Business deserves to make a fair and good profit they don't deserve to have greed supported, and enshrined.

Jody, I always appreciate your posts, but, with due respect, conservatives haven't displayed the requisite traits of careing human beings since DDE because the in-humanity of their ideology, as engendered in their manifest greed, was summarily exposed and they decided to own it by doubling down rather than adjusting. This is exemplified by Ryan's economic plan for the destruction of the middle class as we know it.

For those of you that don't see this - after they finish w/ taking all the money from the Elderly, Disabled and Poor, your money will be next until there are only 2 groups in this country - the Serfs and the Elite. Paul Ryan and the rest of the GOP that supported his bill don't care about 98% of the people of this country.
