NBC's Michael Isikoff's piece on msnbc.com on whether "enhanced interrogations techniques," a.k.a. torture, led to the finding of Osama bin Laden provides good context and details. Excerpts below.
VIDEO: Did enhanced interrogation find bin Laden?
Here are some excerpts:
The behind-the-scenes story of how bin Laden was finally located is yet to be fully told, but emerging details seem likely to reignite the debate over whether “enhanced interrogation” techniques and other aggressive methods that have been widely criticized by human rights groups provided useful – or timely -- intelligence about al-Qaida. While some current and former U.S. officials credited those interrogations Monday with producing the big break in the case, others countered that they failed to produce what turned out to be the most crucial piece of intelligence of all: the identity and whereabouts of the most important figure in bin Laden courier's network. ...
While Liz Cheney and other conservatives on Monday tried to portray the bin Laden raid as vindication of the intelligence community’s tough interrogations of “high-value” detainees, other details suggest that the most aggressive “enhanced interrogation” techniques -- including waterboarding, against other detainees, particularly 9/11 mastermind Khaled Sheikh Mohammed -- proved useless in learning the identity of the bin Laden courier. ...
“They waterboarded KSM (Khaled Sheikh Mohammed) 183 times and he still didn’t give the guy up,” said one former U.S. counterterrorism official who asked not to be identified. “Come on. And you want to tell me that enhanced interrogation techniques worked?" ...
In the end, U.S. officials say, it took years of patient intelligence work -- including information gleaned from multiple detainees and other sources of intelligence -- to enable the CIA to figure out who the courier was.
“Four years ago, we uncovered his identify,” said a senior U.S. official. Two years later, the U.S. officials were able to trace the courier and his brother to the area in Pakistan where they finally found bin Laden.

GAME - SET - MATCH!
Torture apologists!
It's my understand that when they asked KSM about the name of the courier, he responded he either didn't know him or he was not of any importance...
It was THEN that the CIA became suspicious!
PS: I ALWAYS enjoy Michael Isikoff's in depth reporting! ;o)
Yes. they say Most didnt work. but Some Did. and because SOME of it did. Osama Bin laden is Dead today. gotta love our War Mongering President for using that which actually Did..
This should have been apparent long ago.
There is absolutely no evidence any information was gained from the torture techniques.
If fact, the evidence suggests information was gained IN SPITE of the torture.
Ali Suffan, a high level FBI terrorist interrogator, testified to this before the U.S. Senate. He gave a detailed discription as to why torture does not work, and why traditional informed interrogation does work.
He also gave a very detailed example of torture causing Abu Zubaydah to stop talking.
Have a read kids. You might learn something.

Steve,
There is no evidence any of the torture worked.
Any information gained during or after torture was in spite of it.
John Brennan said clearly on Morning Joe that the CIA "learned" about the importance of the "trusted courier" from KSM, but when you listen to what he says it's clear water boarding didn't work. What Brennan said was CIA investigators already knew from other sources that the "trusted courier" existed. When they asked KSM about the "trusted courier" KSM did not tell them about the "trusted courier", if water-boarding was successful it would mean the person being tortured would honestly spill the beans. Instead KSM repeated lied about the "trusted courier". Because the CIA knew KSM was lying they realized that the "trusted courier" was a major player, otherwise KSM wouldn't have lied to protect the "trusted courier".
So according to Brennan the CIA learned about the importance of the "trusted courier" through KSM, but not by KSM verbally giving the CIA any useful or truthful information, but because KSM repeatedly lied to protect the identity of the "trusted courier", which lead the CIA to conclude the "trusted courier" was a major player!
If we gained this info years ago by torturing - they why is it NOW that he is found - how many years later??
Repulicants
Replubicants,
You will never know what techniques worked, didn't work, or what information was gained or not. Such data is not available to the public....there are various levels of classification utilized during such interviews, with all classified on a greater "need to know" than you have the need to know.
Now, you can rant all that you want, but I can tell you your rant is unjustified;serious information was collected.
safecracker,
You are right. We may never know, or at least not for some time.
However, considering there is NO evidence they did work, and their is solid evidence they did not (as well as time tested reasoning as to why they didn't).....it seems it is you who is doing the ranting.
I mean really....how stupid and deluded do you have to be to first say I will never know what worked or didn't, and then insist "serious information was collected" using torture......while providing no evidence of your ideological B.S.?
I suppose, true to the right wing call to be ignorant of all that disagrees with what your fed, you ignored the testimony that makes your delusion look even sillier.
Republicants,
There is no evidence that various interviewing techniques worked will never be shared with the public.
Unless you were a member of the compartment engaged in obtaining the data, you would not know what was generated. And what you believe is torture isn't used to obtain information.
Unfortunately, many who do know cannot by law, provide you and the public with the information you seek. But go ahead and use your ignorance to belittle me or anyone else who has been involved in such interviews. I have been grilled by various people like you with far more ability to end careers. Doesn't bother me to have you revert to name-calling.
Feisty, It was your understanding? Well gee I guess that settles it then. Thank you.
Thank you very much for this post First Read. . . the truth will set us free.
This is so pathetic. The GOP want so desperately to take credit for what transpired Sunday by excusing their torture policy and saying that this is how we were able to track down bin Laden. They make me sick.
I agree Feisty. Michael Isikoff is the real deal as far as journalism goes. I've seen some terrific guests on MSNBC these past few days. Their coverage has been quite thoughtful.
Michael Isikkoff is one honest investigative reporter and a credit to journalism. I'm not sure what it takes for conservatives to understand that waterboarding is torture and unacceptable in the civilized world. Certainly the Cheney family (Father and Daughter) don't get it.
Pat, Boston, MA
I guess they'll be causing the hell out of bush.
I'll tell you what the GOP CAN take credit for: getting us into this mess and not having the intelligence or fore site to get us out. It didn't take them long to gather up the liars to get us into IRAQ and the subsequent killing of over 6000 of our finest, plus the wounding of 10's of thousands of others. Twice as many as were killed in the 9-11 tragedy. At six months Bush couldn't care less about Bin Laden as he related at a press conference, nor was he worried about him, because they had 'marginalized' him - whatever in his foggy mind that means.
HAHAHAHAHA, and Chris Matthews is the bomb......why he just gets a big thrill up his leg every time Obama is mentioned. And what about that great White House journalist, Mr. Todd, who is the second voice of Obama?
Great MSNBC talking heads.
I LOVE the smell of fresh TRUTH the hot Texas afternoon.
Last night, the ex head of the CIA saif the the tip was NOT received from a Gitmo detainee, In fact, he said, no actionable intelligence has been derived from the detainee in years. You put someone in solitary for years, cut him off from the world and he becomes more defiant. Ask John McCain..read his books. You waterboard a man 183 times expecting a different outcome. That just makes you stupid. Eventually he will say anything to stop the torture. In SERE school they now teach you to tell some truths and some lies that are believsble to stop the beatings and torture. Does the CIA think the otherside does not do the same. Please don't torture anyone in my name or for that matter in the guise of helping the USA.
The byline in the Atlanta Journal Constitution today: "Operation rooted in an American intelligence discovery 4 years ago." Georgia is very Republican, and their heads are exploding, trying to spin the story to give credit to Bush. None of the Republican rep's here will even mention Obama by name. The paper constantly states that we still have $4 gas and a bad economy, so stop celebrating. And the folks around town are not celebrating; in fact they are furious because they (wrongly) believe GW Bush should get all the credit for the operation, not Pres. Obama. Republicans are so pathetic...vote them all out in 2012.
It is the same here in TEXAS BIG SKY country too Mary. Shame on them for not giving our President his due.
I guess it all depends on where you live. Up here near Seattle, Obama is getting ALL the credit. Do I believe he should get credit for it yes I do. I also believe Bush should get some credit as well. The policies put into place for finding terrorist was done by the Bush administration. Obama has not changed any of it. We still have the Patriot Act, wiretapping and the CIA looking for Bin Laden. Obama did give the order to get the guy, I'm awefully glad of that fact. He shouldn't take all the credit though. I don't believe in torture either and I'm a conservative. So the media plays it how they want, doesn't make it always correct.
That is so sad. I can remember when the Atlanta Constitution was a revered periodical. Who on earth owns it now, Murdoch? I do think that Bush, (as much as I think he's an intellectual fly-weight) should get credit also, but Obama made the decision, so there's no point in argueing about it. I'm just thankful that BinLaden is gone, as I'm sure we all are.
So when they come to get our former President and Vice for crimes against humanity.. will they first have to prove they are human. (bad joke..)
but I say no to torture anywhere and everywhere... great job Mr President (Obama) and the men and women of our services (Armed and Intelligence) and
isn't it amazing how public servants can be so effiient, professional and dedicated.
Wish the congress was half that good, we might have a budget and a plan to get out of debt (instead of the ryan garbage and the earmarks from hell!!).
MSNBC takes the side of the Left, literally spinning like a top to protect its patron Obama...pathetic journalism..
Bob-1887910..
Michael Hayden, who served as CIA director of the CIA under Bush, said in an interview last night:
"that the the tip was NOT received from a Gitmo detainee". In fact, he said, no actionable intelligence has been derived from the detainee in years.
No spin...read the interview.
Waterboard Isikoff, he'd crack instantly. He'd probably even confess to making
up the BS about a GI flushing the Koran down the toilet.
Ira, That is not what was said. You just hear everything out of your left ear. Also, for your edification, this is a war, if we are going to kill someone to protect our Country, we sure as he!! should have a right to pour water on an enemy's face.
You bleeding hearts make me want to puke.
With any luck it will hit your shoes... ;o)
tooo funny Feisty!
Left unsaid in the pathetic MSNBC spin: the critical piece of information about the courier came from coercive interrogation, though not waterboarding...
Bob --- you are a troll... begone...
Bob-1887910..
Bob...it was an interview...the Bush Head of the CIA was there. He said this on the air, No spin, dude.
Bob,
You get the "I plucked off a libbie today" award! You are officially a troll!!!!
Now where is Sally the Moderator talking about rule 5 of the Code of Ethics? Oh, that's correct, the rules only apply to those who oppose libbie views. But I am still ranked higher than you Bob. Bev, the self-proclaimed racist, called me a "Cracker who hides behind a white sheet!"
Hey Sally, does the code not apply to Bev too? Or Feisty, the Red Head?
President Obama is doing the best he can considering the political and economic situation. Most of the problems that this adminastration is dealing with was inherited from 8 years of a non-regulated coporate and wall street buddy system under G.B. It took eight years for us to get here and those that are out of touch with reality expect Obama to fix it overnight. The economic turnaround will take time with all the factors involved. The main culprit to our economic failings are not the current adminastration. They are being caused by many of our corporation moving thousands and maybe even millions of jobs overseas and still claiming hefty tax breaks or paying no taxes at all. The oil speculators controlling the price of oil rather than supply and demand determing the price. It's being caused by many corporations streamlining and increasing output but not hiring more workers. We need cooperation from both political parties, along with corporations bringing jobs back to America. Here is a good example of what I'm saying. A well paying job in my city was recently shut down costing about 1500 jobs, but this same company has 14 plants operating overseas that were not affected. Is that the president's fault. In order for the U.S. to turn it around we all have to work together to protect jobs, create jobs and spur economic growth. The workng class drives the economy but if they are not working the economy will continue to stay down. You can only create so many jobs when all of them are being outsourced overseas. Until we fix this major problem then and only then will our economy turn around.
Ok, although. Obama does get some credit (little) for allowing the operation, im sure most of the information came from the bush administration, for the people who think harsh interagation
didn't work do you think a terrorist is goen give information to the us if we ask him and say please?( if you think that im sure glad your not in the military protecting our country) no they dont you have to make them talk and although its not a pleasant it works. Obama he'll try to take credit for this come election time but look just 1 month ago he wanted to cut pay to the troops.
I've certainly got my issues with Obama. But I do have to give him credit for leaving a Republican in charge of the Military. Common Sense seems so lacking on his side of the isle.....
This is pure nonsense. The primary information about Bin Laden's whereabouts came from Abu Faraj al-Libi and Hassan Ghul who were both subjected to harsh interrogations in secret CIA prisons. The Libs are trying to put a spin on this one. They refuse to give President Bush the credit he deserves for bringing about the demise of Bin Laden.
The "Gross Odd People" (GOP), and the "Really Not Competent" (RNC), failed to get Bin Laden. This is fact! "Chump-Change-Cheney" to say that torture helped with our war on terror is mentally ill, and a lie. That is fact! The Buch Administration has brain cell damage to rewrite history to justify their many failures dealing with the economy, and diplomatically. It is just absurd to now hear "Chump-Change-Cheney" trying to take credit for this recent operation to defeat terror is the continued spewing of "Crazy Conservative Crap" (CCC). The Bush Administration went illegally into Iraq, and the mission in Afganistan was not completed. The video of President Bush in his 2003 White House Press Conferences concerning Bin Laden are treasonous. It clearly showed that the "Brainless" comments of President Bush were reckless and rude to say. What a joke America!
The right wing simply cannot let go of there projection based reality......EVER.
No matter what happens, how many facts are against them, etc.
Good ideologs.
Interesting that after nearly seven years of coercive and illegal not to mention immoral torture of war prisoners, there was never any success in capturing OBL. Even more interesting perhaps is the fact that the former Secretary of State (national security advisor) was "surprised" that he was found where he was hiding. We have to wonder if these people had been white anglo saxons would the Bush WH have been so quick to toss out the window the moral conventions and convictions which we have been a party to for generations. As a former Republican and fiscal conservative, I find it highly distasteful to even attempt to justify war crimes. If the ends truly justify the means, then Native Americans and African Americans and Asian Americans would be amply justified to become modern day terrorists/freedom fighters to re-write the hideous history served up by centuries of oppression at the hands of Europeans and European Americans.
And don't tell me about pulling one's self up by one's bootstraps! You have to have boots to make that attempt. Remember, most of the wealth of the western world was either stolen in the dark or stolen in broad daylight. If we are really facing the decline of America as so many of the far right believe (Beck, Hannity, O'Reilly and Limbaugh) perhaps it is just because there is such a huge unpaid debt to the victims of American greed.
2nd I used to think it was ok for the Republicans to oppose funding for Planned Parenthood. After reading your post, I belive not olny should the government pay for Liberals birth control and abortions we should have a "Cash for Vasectomys" program to encourge more participation......
I know how to solve this debate. Let's put Bush/Cheney on trial for the war crimes that they perpetuated, put them under oath and then we'll get the truth.
YOU GOTTA LOVE REPUBS. they'll try anything to take credit. remember when communism fell and they tried to say reagan did it all - like truman and john kennedy never existed. the mouth breathing idiot gwb had 6 years to catch him, but they were too busy trying to torture folks and to someway justify torture, that they didnt concentrate on any other intelligence gathering methods. c'mon, waterboarding a guy 183 times. if he didnt tell you the first 50 times, you're p_ssing in the wind. but no, they got to keep going b/c they know every dam thing even when the pro's tell them different (remember"weapons of mass destruction!!!", "weapons of mass destruction!!!", "weapons of mass destruction!!!". AND, MY FAVORITES "with all the oil they have, the war will pay for itselF" and "we'll be welcomed as liberators".)
More inconvenient facts in takedown of Bin Laden, you wont read on leftist media MSNBC: Warrrantless NSA wiretaps were key !
red state: "It took more traditional sleuthing to get al-Kuwaiti’s real name, according to the Times. That meant putting more operatives on the ground in Afghanistan and Pakistan to track him, yielding a partial name. Once they had that, they unleashed “one of their greatest investigative tools”: the National Security Agency’s surveillance net. The NSA monitored email and phone traffic until they had his full name: Shaikh Abu Ahmed.
Last summer, the Associated Press reports, al-Kuwaiti/Ahmed made a fatal mistake: he called someone under NSA surveillance. After showing up on the grid, CIA operatives on the ground were able to hunt him.
You will note the absence of any reference to the NSA getting a search warrant for this. Once again, after all the huffing and puffing and lawsuits about NSA surveillance, it turns out that it, too, played a part in tracking down Public Enemy #1.....
Ah, Big Daddy, NSA. It's amazing how the Agency, and their supporting Army, Navy and Air Force groups can develop more accurate intelligence than the "Clowns-In-Action", DIA, Secret Service, or any other member of the community.
If the general public actually knew about the Agency, and the various compartmented project groups, they would be amazed.
I'm surprised Trump didn't take credit the SOB
What if by some miracle of common sense... The SEALS didnt kill Osama out right. They just kidnapped him and took him to George Bush's Ranch and he is being tortured right now for information on the where abouts of those other douce bags.
UAW:
Capture was never the objective.
Here we have Radical "Wrongs" spewing their rhetoric to cover the brilliant and exceptional actions of the Navy Seals. These "Seals" sealed the coffin of that "Murderer" and credit should be everyone involved with this operation, including the President who authorized the operation. All of the command structure who trained and equipped these brave men deserve respect and honor. Every outlet who broadcasts the naysayers are in over drive talking down "Our" accomplishments. "We" took down the most wanted man in the universe in less than forty minutes. This was a "We" effort because an endeavor like this one was sanctioned all the way to the top. "We" should be proud of their accomplishments, but their actions are being tarnished by the Toxic Talking Heads like Brush Himoff, Honk Sannity and the like. There was a jump in the President's poll numbers, but they won't acknowledge it. These guys cannot give credit when deserved. They absolutely do not want to say this was a great move by the president and the security team.
Clinton has coached Obama well. if there is an ounce of credit laying around, by
all means claim it as your own. Obama needs a whole lot of learning moments instead of worrying about "teaching moments"???
MSNBC pathetic spinning like a top Headline:
"Most aggressive 'enhanced interrogation' 'proved useless' "
Reality: most interrogations, period, are 'useless'..EXCEPT the ones that arent.
One interrogation that worked:: the name of the courier was obtained thru coercive interrogation, not torture....
Still peddling your bullsh!t running from thread to thread, huh Bobby?
It must be difficult for you torture apologists attempting to 'save face' LOL
Feisty is losing her mouth thru her rectum again Bobby.......she surely needs to see her proctologist.
About time for her pal Bev, the self-proclaimed racist, to send a few words of hate.
Hey Sally the MSNBC First Read monitor, when does the double standards end and others also being censored for your Code of Honor?
