Nevada Secretary of State Ross Miller today announced that the special congressional election to fill Dean Heller's (R) House seat will be a free-for-all contest without a primary.
The Conventional Wisdom is that either this helps Sharron Angle (R) if she runs (because she would be the most recognizable candidate) or it could help the Democrats win (because the GOP vote gets split up).
Heller was recently named to replace John Ensign in the Senate.
The AP:
Nevada's chief election officer says there will be no limit on the number of candidates who can enter the state's first special election to replace a sitting U.S. House member... There will not be a primary. Voters will pick from a free-for-all ballot.
Republicans had argued that the never-before-used election law allowed for political parties to choose their candidates.
The special is slated to take place on Sept. 13.
*** UPDATE *** The National Republican Congressional Committee clearly isn't happy with the ruling. “This blatantly partisan ruling from Harry Reid’s political machine is only the beginning of what will surely be a long and drawn out process,” said an NRCC spokesman.

In this corner weighing 140 lbs you have the chicken lady Lowden...

Chickens for Progress.
(Progresso??)
All the ugly republican bridesmaids are going to fight for Ensigns tossed bouquet.
Funny stuff Forrest! ;o)))
Free for all...that sums it up!
Interesting for sure! Who is running for the Democrats? Libertarians? Any sane people in this one?
“Our Founding Fathers, they put that Second Amendment in there for a good reason, and that was for the people to protect themselves against a tyrannical government,” Angle told conservative talk show host Lars Larson in January. “In fact, Thomas Jefferson said it’s good for a country to have a revolution every 20 years. I hope that’s not where we’re going, but you know, if this Congress keeps going the way it is, people are really looking toward those Second Amendment remedies.”
Also that month, she told Reno conservative talk show host Bill Manders she hoped her opponent, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, would be defeated at the ballot box before the electorate resorted to more aggressive measures.
“I’m hoping that we’re not getting to Second Amendment remedies,” Angle said. “I hope that the vote will be the cure for the Harry Reid problems.”
And last month she told the Reno Gazette-Journal “it’s almost an imperative” that conservatives win.
“The nation is arming,” she told the newspaper. “What are they arming for if it isn’t that they are so distrustful of their government? They’re afraid they’ll have to fight for their liberty in more Second Amendment kinds of ways. That’s why I look at this as almost an imperative. If we don’t win at the ballot box, what will be the next step?”

Wonder if we’re all going to have to put up with Ms. Angle and her second amendment solutions all summer or did happenings in nearby Arizona remind folks over in Nevada that they may want to temper this kind of rhetoric some
The NRCC should be angry with Ensign - Harry Ried didn't force him to resign. But, seeing the writing on the wall, they've got to put the blame somewhere else. Too bad...so sad! (not)
Mark...
Is there a runoff for the top 2 finishers? Or is a plurality enough? Thanks!
If Angle was elected it would be absolutely hysterical to watch the left go completely nuts.
Not as funny as watching a state that has legalized gambling, legalized prostitution, and protects the sanctity of marriage with 24 hour drive thru wedding chapels, try to deal with "The Church Lady".
Kirby---I don't think the left would go nuts---we would just continue to worry that there was someone in government who felt it was appropriate to recommend "Second Amendment" remedies. If you think that is the kind of behavior you want from your elected officials, why don't you make a contribution to Ms. Angle?
Reading the moonbatty posts from the likes of "Feisty", seems the left is already nuts ...
Steeler Fan -
Any state that would send Harry Reid to the Senate for nigh on to 30 years, making him a wealthy man, really has a sense of humor. Unlike a number of posters here.
C'mon, we gave you Larry Criag, you can return the favor.
I guess the Republican response answers the conventional wisdom question! They must think it hurts them.
Sad, sad bunch of characters. Ensign should have resigned when they revealed his parents paid off is mistress and her husband, his employee. This was WRONG on the face of it and spoke volumes about the judge first and never compromise crowd. Vitter was a fine example of how well marriage works for these hypocrites too. Not a real man amongst 'em. Judgemental? The Bible says that we will know them by their fruits. I smell much rotten see little palpable fruit.
Angle? Speaking of "moonbat"! D'Angle-Alang-Alang-Alang! Ring her bell and she's ready to run for anything. I say Dog catcher would be a good fit. Put her in charge of putting the crap out every day. She's good at that.
Too funny. These people idolize things like Palin, Bachmann, Beck, Angle, Trump, O'Donnell, etc. then use the term 'moonbat'.
I was thinking the same thing Buzz! lol
This will be free of thought, free of new ideas, and free of any new policy ideas. This sums up this GOP/RNC election process correctly. This is a battle of the ignorant, the rascist, and the continued support of the Tea Beggers. Another poltical battle between the. "Idiots Of Ignorance." What a joke!
Maybe the solution should be to have elections run by non-partisan commissions. It has been clear ever since Florida 2000, that state secretaries of state use the available rules to manipulate the elections to best favor their party - whether it be purging the rolls or all night voter registration centers.
What we need here in America is "One man(or woman), One vote" and "Initiative and Referendum" at all levels of local, state and federal levels. Had this principle been in place Al Gore would have won the presidency. I vote for opening the flood gates and let any and all run for office. The winners will win!
Not very long or high! I drive by gas stations every day. It jumped another dime. I still see our debt and spending soaring, our housing market continue to collapse even further and inflation that is running out of control. He's still a one termer.
Who do you think can beat him?
IMO.. no Republican candidate can beat Obama in 2012. I'm so eager for that election just to get the media off the rankings of the would-be Repug candidates.
