If you follow American politics, you know it can change in a blink of an eye.
In the last few weeks, as gasoline prices have continued to climb in the United States, President Obama has seen his poll numbers decline, suggesting a potential vulnerability in 2012.
But the news that Osama bin Laden has been killed -- on Obama's watch -- is most definitely a political game-changer and appears destined to impact the contours of the 2012 presidential race, as well as the emerging Republican field. Of course, the size of the impact is yet unknown and will be played out in the months ahead, especially with U.S. unemployment near 9%. The 2012 general election, after all, is more than 550 days away.
As NBC's Chuck Todd also mentioned, it could have an impact on the U.S. involvement in Afghanistan-Pakistan. Does it make the U.S. re-evaluate the mission there? Does it affect the troop draw-down that's scheduled to begin this summer?

Regardless of your political affiliation, this was the best job by our CIA and the Military. As our chief, Obama desrves credit for getting Osama. As for his burial at sea, that was very appropriate. Feed him to the sharks. Unfortunately Osama's capture does not end the potential of terror in the world and our involvement in Afghanistan. We must remain vigilant and must keep the Taliban/Al Qaida out of Afghanistan. The capture of Osama deep inside Pakistan showed that Pakistan government and military are deeply involved in harboring the terror groups. Poor Afghans have been crying and telling the story to the world but no one heard them.
Good Job Mr. President:) You Rock:)
Great job CIA and the US military. YOU Rock!
******Dammn Some REpublicans on here sound like they are alqueda's side. Very unpatrotic.
Thank your US military and US President for a well job done. Go USA Go President Obama!:)
true dat!!!! Maybe the neocons should have put half as much effort into hunting bin laden as they did in convincing the public that iraq had weapons of mass destruction. Cant blame them for being bitter though, it's gotta sting quite a bit to have a democrat lay the brass balls on the table and finish what they started. I think there's a certain amount of gratitude owed to another party in this game as well. Over the next few weeks I think it's gonna come out that the pakistani intelligence agency played a bigger part in this than our own intelligence agency, just a guess but I'd lay money on the table to back that guess up.
Progressivegirl.. Yeah about as much as you progressives that want to let them build a damn mosque in NY next to the world trade center property...
It doesn't matter who is President when we got him, you need to admit the fact that Obama kept Bush's policies in order to get Osama...and the CIA and the military are the heros here. This isn't about Obama.
American won this round - no matter who is president. Just pray now that Obama can keep us safe from the jihad that most likely is coming our way.
lol, this is where the republican principles of unregulated capitalism bite you in the ass, money talks and NY walks. The religious freedom that our constitution grants us protects the right of islam to legally purchase and develop private land any way they see fit. If you don't like it then put your money on the table and purchase the land and build a church instead.
The bush policy regarding our military is to cut VA benifits, short the soldiers when it comes to protective body armor, and waste billions convincing the U.S. public that iraq has weapons of mass destruction (not to mention the lie that was told to congress which is an impeachable offence, but as long as it's not a blow job in the oval office the republicans don't seem to mind being lied to).
This is a great victory for Obama since he gave the orders to enter pakistan, he gave the orders to kill bin laden, he invested the resources to get the job done. None of those things can be layed on the alter of W. When it comes to unpopular wars such as vietnam, afghanistan, iraq, it's very important to give credit to the comander in chief who accomplished the job. Way to go Obama.
God Bless the CIA and the US Military for risking their lives to finally get him! They are the heros here! They accomplished the job of finding him and killing him. But it's not over yet.
We went off in that part of the world to get OBL. Now that we have gotten OBL, we desperately need to consider pulling out.
So true. Time to leave the middle east and finally declare "mission accomplished"
Mission Accomplished!!! OBL is dead. We need to reevaluate the need of our troops being there.
Now that OBL has been killed, Will be leave Afghanistan?
sadly no, we don't leave afghanistan. Just ask the rusians. The conservatives drove this car off the lot and now the population gets to own it. We'll be there till islam adopts western democracy.
The Military and intelligence agencys caught and killed bin Laden, in spite of Obama. Obama could not lead his daughters around the block successfully.
lol, at least he can do what the neocons were incapable of doing. Love Obama or hate Obama, gotta admit that he brought Bin Laden down. Too bad the conservatives pissed away trillions of dollars in Iraq trying to find him. All we had to do was put the brains behind the operation and 3 years later, WE F**KING GOT HIM.
Check your facts anti- Conservatives didn't piss away trillions in Iraq. I do believe it was far less than Obama's great stinkulus pacakge, which was close to $1 trillion.
Bush did things in Billions, Obama does it in Trillions. :)
The Obama stimulus package, The Bush era tax cuts. Each one has turned into a waste of money due to variable circumstances. You are right however about the wasted money in Iraq, I believe it was less than a trillion but I'm pretty sure it was far more than a billion.
Clinton handed bush a 2 trillion dollar surplus and bush handed Obama a massive deficit. Care to rethink the billions that bush wasted?
Dahly: As Commander in Chief, President Obama ordered the strike, without the order, we would not have killed OBL...yes he used intelligence gathered by others, but bottom line, he had to make the decision for the strike....you'd be wetting your pants if you had to make such a decision.
Not a game changer at all. It's great that we got Bin Laden, and Obama just happened to be the guy in the WH that answered a simple question with the word "yes." the CIA and the military are the true heros, although Obama will take most of the credit for simply giving the same command that any president would have done.
It still doesn't change the the fact that he's caused the economy to get worse, uneployment is up, and spending and debt isn't going to stop while Obama is in the WH.
Let him stroke his own for a while, but we all won't forget what's happening here and now. Hope Obama can keep us safe, because Al Q is coming after us again...
within the first 2 years of the neocon government the regulations that roosevelt put in place following the great depression were removed. That deregulation is what caused this massive recession, not Obama. Our cyclic recession was enhanced by deregulation and 2 wars which were completely caused by the neocons, the democrats didn't have any say in what happened. The reason the economy was able to stay solvent under W was because china flooded us with borrowed money. Now that it's time to face the beast created by W it's Obama's fault? I don't think so. We all knew this was coming, the fiscally responsible conservatives did a bang up job of wasting the surplus that clinton handed to them while running up a deficit that we cant recover from without some form of austerity measures.
Prisoner in GITMO was WATER-BOARDED 4 years ago. He squeals the name of a courier. Suspect identified two years ago. CIA confirms suspect meets with bin Laden in million dollar compound, built in a slum. Pakistan's knew nothing? Rather than bomb compound back to the stoneage. Our fearful leader risks the lives of elite troops to kill this mass murderer. Apparently he didn't want to risk civilian casualties. What a total JACKASS! Thank God it worked out well and no American was killed in this adventure.
I am a 22 yr combat vet who served as a special operator. Dropping a bomb usually destroys the body if your trying to recover it as proof and confirmation that you have a physical target. Plus, you significantly reduce the risk of collateral damage (innocents and property) when you send a team in. If you have ever served in the military you would realize this.
Everyone wants to drop a bomb, sweep the pieces under the rug and leave but we adhere to the Geneva Conventions, the Laws of war and military necessity, even if our enemies do not. It takes a special person to serve in the military - one who can put their personal feelings aside to accomplish a humane mission. Judging by the responses on here, I'm glad some of these idiots do not serve next to me in combat...they would get our people killed first!
Looks like waterboarding worked after all....
Good thing Obama kept Gitmo open and continued Bush's policies or we wouldn't be celebrating this great find and defeat.
Let's just hope Obama can keep us safe from them now - because you know they'll have Obama on their mind when they come for us again. It won't be Bush they're after anymore. Hope the guy has it in him to protect the USA like he defends the terrorists at Gitmo. So glad we gave Osama a proper muslim burial. Should have ground him up to pieces with a pig. Screw the virgins - he needs to rot in hell.
once again, LOL. We've addressed the gitmo waterboarding bragging already but since you cant seem to scroll up to read I guess we'll cover it again. Please post the link where you found your information about waterboarding providing the location of bin laden.
I love your opinion on islamic burial, especially since you're terrified of some jihad. View the reaction that islam had when the crazy wack job burned the korans. After reviewing that incident please explain how mutilating a dead body will somehow ease the tensions between christianity and islam. Plus your mutilation tactics are very similar to the mutilation tactics of radical islam.
Gitmo is another story, it'd be justified in keeping it open if we could actually bring evidence against the inmates, but, so far we've managed to prove that the vast majority of gitmo inmates have absolutely nothing to do with terror or terrorism.
anti-neocon:
[Please post the link where you found your information about waterboarding providing the location of bin laden.]
I hope you have your PJ's and a good book...War and Peace will do...if you are going to wait around the the troll VDO to supply a link for information he posts...he doesn't believe in facts, just ideological, emotional responses...
...good luck...!
Dem: All the BS about getting info from waterboarding is coming from those that approved the torture...they have to say it to justify their actions. My gosh, you are sooooooo guible....aren't you embrassed?
VOTE: No it didn't smart guy. They waterboarded him 180 times and he gave them no significant information. Months later, under a verbal, non violent interogation, he gave up the crucial info.
Typical Rightie, always wants to be a cowboy. Just like John Wayne, (a big Republican who dodged military service in WWII & that's a fact) shoot first ask questions later. With you, every thing is simple. Things don't work that way, they require thought and careful actions.
Ask the CIA, they will tell you that torture does not give you accurate intel.

Info provided by Congressman Peter King, NY, tonight on FOX
Dahly: Look in the mirror if you want to see a TOTAL JACKASS! Easy for you to sit in the bleachers and try to play quarterback....you would probably wet your pants if you had to make 1/10th the decisions that a president has to make..espeically in these trying times.
He wanted the job. He is unqualified and inept. Period.
@Dahly--Obviously he is qualified and quite effective. Period.
How's the economy? Too many Non union workers are still looking. Bought a bag of groceries lately? How about a tank of Gas? The Gulf is still whacked out too, isn't it?
Try to see the bigger picture Dahly.
"It's the Economy STUPID" Bill Clinton
I'll be fascinated to hear what the GOP field of candidates would do to help the economy if they were elected. Interesting that you noted Bill Clinton. President who presided over a prosperous economy.
Gingrich and Kasich balanced the Budget, lest you forget. Still, no answers, just deflections. Typical BTW: GOP has been fools along with Dems. Time to fix it and stop pointing fingers.
To all who libs who wanted a link posted to verify waterboarding was used for getting the info.
You all must live in some kind of weird illogical la-la land.
Oh sure. You want the CIA to publically verify with exacting detail how, when and from whom they got this info.
And incredibly, you all would really have us believe that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the ruthless, tough mastermind for the 9/11 attack somehow just easily sang for his supper? Just gave up the code name for the couriers for nothing?
Aren't we talking about people who will behead an infidel at a moments notice? And you think these people willingly gave this critical information up?
For supposedly being so smart, sometimes you liberals really have your head up you know where.
Oh, one more thing about your convoluted thinking. Obama just had OBL killed. But also under Obama, we now couldn't waterboard OBL if we'd kept him alive.
ENNER: Khalid gave up the goods NOT when he was waterboarded 180 times but rather, months later, under verbal interrogation.
As a matter of fact, my friend, I saw an interview yesterday with a CIA official who said the our torture of him actually slowed us down in getting critical intel from him.
You guys just love to oversimply everything.
OZZIE BOY:
I disagree. I don't know who the CIA official was you saw so I can't comment.
I refer to a Washington Post article I saw in 2009 when the Obama administration QUOTE, "released pages of unredacted classified information on the techniques used to question captured terrorist leaders but pulled out its black marker when it came to the details of what those interrogations achieved."UNQUOTE.
In other word, they blocked out the info we got with the techniques. Why? Because it showed the techniques effectiveness.
Here's what the article said further about a 2005 Justice Department memo on this subject:
In particular, the CIA believes that it would have been unable to obtain critical information from numerous detainees, including [Khalid Sheik Mohammed] and Abu Zubaydah, without these enhanced techniques." The memo continues: "Before the CIA used enhanced techniques . . . KSM resisted giving any answers to questions about future attacks, simply noting, 'Soon you will find out.' " Once the techniques were applied, "interrogations have led to specific, actionable intelligence, as well as a general increase in the amount of intelligence regarding al Qaeda and its affiliates."
Specifically, interrogation with enhanced techniques "led to the discovery of a KSM plot, the 'Second Wave,' 'to use East Asian operatives to crash a hijacked airliner into' a building in Los Angeles."
KSM later acknowledged before a military commission at Guantanamo Bay that the target was the Library Tower, the tallest building on the West Coast. The memo explains that "information obtained from KSM also led to the capture of Riduan bin Isomuddin, better known as Hambali, and the discovery of the Guraba Cell, a 17-member Jemmah Islamiyah cell tasked with executing the 'Second Wave.'
Ozzie, I applaud the president for taking this action.
But I'm against removing the options of using these techniques and the closing of Gitmo...two things put in place that IMHO have saved us from a number of attacks. I cannot now speak for the future.
I'm glad we got OBL. But I think to take options off the table is dangerous. These guys have said they will resist interrogation until they can't stand it and then will spill the beans because in their minds, Islam will eventually dominate the West and it won't make a difference.
Therefore, it would seem in our best interests to help them to that point of no resistance!
