White House releases president's long-form birth certificate

The White House this morning released President Obama's so-called "long-form" birth certificate. It shows he was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, on Aug. 4, 1961 at 7:24 pm. It is signed by his mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, the attending doctor, and registrar.

An image of President Obama's longer-form birth certificate released today by the White House.

(Here's a copy of the long-form birth certificate.)

During the campaign, Obama released a shorter version, a "Certification of Live Birth," which serves as the official document released by the state of Hawaii and recognized by the federal government. It's the document Hawaiians, for example, would use to get a passport.

This conspiracy theory has been debunked by several news organizations, including NBC News, but it has gained new life as Donald Trump, considering a Republican bid for president, has essentially campaigned on the issue.

This morning at a news conference, Trump took credit for the release of the document.

"Today I'm very proud of myself, because I've accomplished something that no one else has been able to accomplish," Trump said in New Hampshire, adding, "Our president has finally released a birth certificate. I want to look at it, but I hope it's true. ... But he should have done it a long time ago. ... But I am really honored to have played such a big role in hopefully, hopefully, getting rid of this issue."

But he went further, saying that the document has to be verified.

"I am really proud, I am really honored," Trump said, adding, "So I feel like I've accomplished something really, really important. ... I'm taking great credit."

This issue has been popular with a fringe portion of the conservative base, but recent polling showed that two-thirds of Republicans said either the president wasn't born in the United States or aren't sure.

In a CBS/New York Times poll released Thursday, 45% of Republicans said they believe Obama was born outside the U.S., while 22% said they didn't know, and just 33% said he was born in the country.

A majority of all Americans, however, believe the president was born in the country. 57% said he was, 25% said they believe he wasn't. 18% said they weren't sure.

I thinks Trump may be right. I saw the date on the certificate, and it looks like it says 1961. I was around then, and I sure don't remember a little kid named Barak Obama!

Navy -

Unfortunately, we already know exactly what they're going to say. I already saw a comment posted on another blog that said "They killed Kennedy, they can forge a birth certificate". For the true birthers, the conspiracy is just beginning, and they'll never be convinced. Never.

DBO- you and I should partake in a little sing and dance, since I believe it was last week that you predicted exactly this- and I agreed with you.

When my son was a truly bratty 13 year old, he came up with an obnoxious little song for just such occasions. Seems appropriate here

I told you so!
I told you so!

I tried to warn you,
But you would not listen!

I told you so,
Next time, you'll know!

When I try to warn you,
You really should listen!

It took six months to get the kid to knock that off- still, it is catchy.

Our President is speaking on MSNBC (he interrupted Trumps rantings - too cool) and he is reminding the people that this information has been out in the public domain for a long time. In my opinion this is just a stall tactic to divert the attention of the American people away from the real issues of Jobs, Economy, Education etc. They GOP/TP is trying to divert our attention away from some of the DRACONIAN laws they are proposing like in Florida and Kansas and 20 other GOP/TP controlled States

Personally - I don't agree with the President releasing it - the train to Beckistan was gaining momentum!

So why didn't he just do this 2 years ago? Why play this game?

Funny that he mentioned the week he gave his budget speech - everyone was talking about the certificate?

Everyone? The S&P announcement about dropping the rating was about his birth certificate?

And I thought the announcement had to do with their response to his incompetence and his budget plan.

Just heard some of Trump's news conference and most of what I heard was "I" "I" I". Just another rich man trying to get some power his money has not been able to buy. Now he will start on the academics and will press the affirmitive action button. He will not elaborate on on how easy it is for the wealthy to gain entrance to an Ivy League school if enough money is donated. I really "love" the way Trump has always heard some rumor but never says from whom.

No Jo the point of the story is that they did not take collective barganing right away in reguards to salary. the health care cost for public workers must be cut.

may be there is no uproar because this was done out in the open, maybe because the democrats did not give a tax cut to pay for this, may be because it 100 million not 500 million.

or maybe No jo, the democrats did not use a election as a excuse to screw the employees over, you know there is a right way to take away and a wrong way, Governor walker did it wrong.

Thank you Sheila (and another poster above) for pointing out what should be as obvious to right-wing loons as the president's citizenship -- Various WH spokespersons have said multiple times that they have already made the birth certificate public, and didn't want to give this silliness any further credence. Come on, these wing-nuts won't even listen to people in their own Republican Party, including Karl Rove and Ann Coulter!

All that is being proved is how over-the-cliff conservatives have gone, including Trump--what a piece of work--the spinning he's doing now is HI-larious. And all this continues to show is the No Drama Obama is pragmatic and has the right temperament to be president. Unlike other conspiracies, the Birther one comes from a dark, ugly place. There's the foreign name and race involved here, which is obviously bigotry. Add to that recent right-wing Echo Chamber talking points demonizing Democrats as communists, and it's clear what this is about.

That there will still be those who won't accept facts/evidence (typical anti-intellectualism), only helps President Obama's reelection. I suspect there's some strategy behind the timing of this--for example it ruined Trump's plans to use this to promote his show, in which he was supposedly going to announce his findings on the show just before he would have to make his finances public. Good job, Mr. President, the Chump need a good slap down.

So bring it on you batsh!t teabaggers, bring it on.

Why would any Black American vote for the Republican Party after this assault on our President's legitimate right to his degrees, his citizenship and his ambitions to occupy the highest office in the land?

Why would any member of a minority vote for the Republican Party after this? Why would anyone who was not born into a wealthy famliy, but who hopes a good education will further their career? Why would anyone, who took out student loans to educate themselves, as our President did, vote for the Republican Party? In the eyes of the Republican Party only men who have inherited their wealth (as the Donald inherited 35 million dolars from his father) and made himself a "success" through cut throat business practices (Donald and Romney both) deserves to be President. What a country.

Hopefully. I enjoyed the clips of Ryan having to defend his bill in the townhalls. Democracy in action. His bill is not perfect but it's a start. DOD has to be included, but I also like the tax reform side, with negotiation as to where the highest tax rate should. As I posted yesterday if you take the President as an example, with deductions he paid 26% of his income in tax. Now if we remove deductions and have a top rate of 27.5% - 30% that would increase revenue and make the process much simpler. Definitely think there should be a cap in mortgage deductions.

One comment on this birther crap. I do think Trump was pandering to a pretty ignorant crowd, but on the left there were instigators like Chris Mathews who seemed intent on keeping this issue going.

Not true, Anna Molly - at least not today. Entertainment Tonight is all about the REALLY important stuff this week. You know, "THE WEDDING"!!!!!! If Trump thinks he can actually...err... "trump" that, his ego's even bigger than we thought......

Well, another week has passed when the House of Representatives under the leadership of John Boehner has done nothing to work on the economy---if they are even in session---so I guess Mr. Trump has diverted attention from that---has to be considered a success to Republicans.

I think anyone with the name barrack hussein obama should have to show his birth cert. especially when he is running for the highest office we have, and i also noticed that only the leftwing news stations would keep asking trump the same thing over and over even after trump would be talking about other things, Trump is a lot smarter man than obuma could ever hope to be.there is a lot of personnel questions obama has not been asked because the only questions he will take are already screened and he will not go on fox cause he knows there the only news station that has the ba77s to ask him questions obout his past and what he is doing to our future.

I think it is a forgery. A forgery made by aliens many years ago, who came to this earth and lived as muslim, athiest, socialists. They created him with an above average brain to do their bidding. They were afraid that if they gave him a below average brain, he might just turn out to be another Donald Trump or Dick Cheney.

Love it, Jack - you nailed it! People will believe what they WANT to believe. This is the stuff myths are made of - "gee, I just saw something I don't understand (or don't like); let's see if I can come up with an explanation and convince everyone else it's true!"

            Thanks for a good laugh.

Anna - Dinosaurs never existed. They were invented by the Obama administration as part of a larger conspiracy to undermine democracy as we know it. I know this to be true because I have NEVER seen a dinosaur's birth certificate. Long or short form. So how could we ever know they really existed? This is undeniable proof.

Jack, that was funny! But no one was debating whether Obama exists, just where he existed first. Ok, technicality. I just hope this puts an end to the list of non-issues Republicans are trying to prop up as important. Just more GOP/TP BS. They knew the long form was not designed for public release that the short form has the identical information and is the public record.

There were six presidents before Barack Obama who had at least one parent not born in this country. Andrew Jackson had two. Anyone demanding to see his birth certificate or saying he wasn't a "natural born citizen"?

What took so long is that he had to have the White House counsel negotiate with the State of Hawaii to set aside one of their sovereign state regulations in order to release the long form. The law in Hawaii states that the long form will NOT be released. The only reason the State of Hawaii agreed to an exception is that they were getting badgered to distraction by this non-issue as well. The White House counsel then had to fly to Hawaii to pick the thing up and bring it back. Now, perhaps you feel this is a good use of taxpayer funds. I don't . I hope you and your ilk are really happy about the money (not to mention attention) that has been wasted on this idiocy.

If citizenship is a requirement to hold the office then someone should be verifying and reporting the findings publicly. Then we wil never have to worry about this type of scenario in the future! The key point is BHO could have laid all this to rest 2 years ago, but chose to drag it out.

obama said he has more important things to worry about, I guess thats why after his comment today his most important economy problem was the fuel he wasted going to do an interview with oprah then it was off to a fund raiser.Trump is not going to run for president but he did not make seven billion dollars which he says is about his worth by being dumb unlike our president that has done nothing but put this country in more debt, and has more failed policies in such a short time ,a man that cannot make up his mind.He has been on tv in the past saying we should not raise the debt ceiling nor would he vote for it and yet now he is all for raiseing it,people cant afford to drive to work even if there were any jobs, but do you you hear any of this on nbc news stations, just like trump says -these biast stations are going to protect obama no matter how silly it makes them look and its not racist to talk about him staying on the basketball court like a lot of the left are crieing .It just so happens that it is what he likes to do just like trump likes to play golf.

Next Trump will demand college transcripts. What other president ever had to go through this kind of petty scrutiny? It's crazies that press this issue because they hate the notion that an African American man can reside at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave...other than in the servants' quarters. But it'll ultimately backfire on them and if more moderate GOP candidates don't distance themselves from this idiocy soon, they'll look just as stupid as Trump.

Perhaps it's time that Mr. Trump's family or business associates consider his mental state. Perhaps "old age" is creeping up on Mr. Trump, or perhaps before his associates filtered out some of the nonsense and insensitivity he continues to spout. Mr. Trump mistakenly equates money with intelligence, and he can't understand why children of his friends today (21st century) who go to the best schools, have great exam scores ( = wealthy background and preparation) don't get into Columbia, while a man who wasn't wealthy did (35 or more years ago) did as a transfer student. He has "heard" (from whom we will never know) that President Obama wasn't a good student, so he thinks there's something fishy going on, that he didn't write his books... Mr. Trump sounds very little like a wealthy, real estate mogul and much more like a harmless retiree sitting on a park bench and indulging in conspiracy theories with the next guy who comes along. Who is taking care of Mr. Trump's supposed day job? Is that person going to run his presidency as well?

This morning at a news conference, Trump took credit for the release of the document.

"Today I'm very proud of myself, because I've accomplished something that no one else has been able to accomplish," Trump said in New Hampshire, adding, "Our president has finally released a birth certificate. I want to look at it, but I hope it's true. ... But he should have done it a long time ago. ... But I am really honored to have played such a big role in hopefully, hopefully, getting rid of this issue."

They should not have done this. It causes Trump to think that he is much more relevant than he is. As to the affirmative action canard? When you apply to the elites, you had better have a transcript that matches what they look for. If you don't all the affirmative action in the world (including legacy status) will not help you.

It's time for Trump to run back to NBC for that nice, easy paycheck, laughing maniacally over how easy it is to tap into the willfully ignorant for ratings. To run for president, he'd have to actually work something other than facial muscles. The horror!

What's bizarre is, even his opponents give our President props for being an intelligent and likeable man. It's the old Rovian trick: attack an opponent's strengths, not his weaknesses. That's why they attacked John Kerry's service record, even though Bush never served in Vietnam and Kerry did. Here Kerry was recognized for bravery under fire, by actually saving a fellow sailor's life, and the Republicans successfully slandered his service, or, as the dictionary defines it, they "swiftboated" him.

But he [Trump] went further, saying that the document has to be verified.

Did anyone think the release of the "long form" certificate that the morons have been clamoring for would really end this nonsense? Of course not. I've believed all along that they would start saying the long form certificate was suspect if it were released. Now it needs to be "verified" according to the Trumpster. There was already absolute proof Obama was born in the US without the long form certificate, so why should its release change the minds of people who don't have much in the mind department?

I am truly sorry that the White House released President Obama's long form birth certificate! The short form was suffice. I don't recall any American president having gone through this crap! And that is just what it is - C R A P!

Now, Mr. Trump feels that he is obliged to authenticate the document! Please! I know that he will bring forth something to question.

For the past two years, people like Mr. Trump have been showing the world the ugly side of America is! It's sad because they have had the spotlight and not the great and wonderful people who make America beautiful.!

If the White House had simply done this years/months ago, this issue would not have even been as vocal as it has been. I could care less who gets credit. I am just glad the President finally decided to provide the evidence that could have resolved this a lONG LONG time ago. SO, why did he wait so long to take this simple step? Probably had nothing to hide, but liked the birther drive so he could use it to his political advantage. Sad ... very sad! Heck, what is Chris Mathews going to report on now that is relevant since he did more to prolong this debate than most folks! AS he yells on his intro "HA!"

The Whitehouse had no need to respond in any kind of hurry to the "crazies". What Trump has done is merely to have sunk to the lowest level of discourse possible. It is a little like asking, "Have you stopped beating your girlfriend, yet?" The absence of any legal record of having beaten your girlfriend, is their evidence of a conspiracy to hide the "crime".

Donald Trump will soon announce that he has personally captured Osama Bin-Laden. Tricked him with the old "when your in New York I got a great place where you can pitch your tent" scam. Trump says not only did he screw Osama out of the camping fee, he also snatched a hell of a nice rug. He then added, "it might be one of those flying carpets I have investigators checking into it. He finished by saying that he had turned Bin-Laden over to Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann for interrogations. After 5 minutes of questioning Bin-Laden said "you see, you see now why we wrap the women's mouths tightly with scarves". Stay tuned.

Since the swearing in of this president America has reminded US that racism is alive and flourishing. No other President or vice president (Dick Cheney) has ever been scrutinized like Obama. Is there no end or no shame. There will come a time when denial will not be the order of the day. Until then keep hating...which is only a true reflection of how you feel about yourselves. You people are so gullible, blind and pathetic that you believe without checking the source and worse don't give a dam whether there is a source to the lies and hatred spawned. Anything can forged to look as good as the original. With the more sophisticated computers etc coming out, it's very easy to do so, they claim.  It takes more than a glance to prove  "authenticity". I still wonder why his Grandmother in Kenya is still so adamant about his birth occurring in Kenya. Or will a sudden retraction occur?  The cousin was quite upset that she'd not take his hints to be quiet and not answer the questions presented to her. Whether the skin is white or of color...anyone deserves to scrutinized when it comes to the ability to sit as President of the US. There's been quite a bit presented to point out that Mr Obama is of questionable character. That "questionable shadiness" can be seen in his choices of advisers and "czars" he has appointed to very sensitive positions.  The people have a right to seek the truth. He is not the first to be questioned nor will he ever be the last. I for one don't care what others think...my opinion is my opinion....he's done too much to destroy and debase this country and continues to do so. He has n o respect for the American flag, he always does the opposite of what he says, and if you'd read more about the man.....you'd not want him as president either. I've read every book  I can on the man....his goal is to destroy the US economically...and he's doing it. When he speaks...I turn  his words around....that's when the truth comes out and happens.....it's always the opposite of what he presents publicly is what is going to happen. Our media is so enthralled at the fact that he is the US's first African-American president.....but their enthrallment over this man is blinding them from presenting the truth about him. It's like they have to prove he's capable of being president as well as.  I have seen quite a few other African Americans who are more capable of holding the position and that I would have definitely voted for. He's done so much that any other president would have been raked over the coals for in the press and Congress as well and impeachment would have removed him. It's like they have become afraid to consider this.  But he can also be removed by the fact that he is incapable of being a president. He's shown that in many ways since the beginning of his term.

I really think that President Obama should bill Donald Trump (the big pompous git) for the fees and charges incurred in order for the President's counsel and the state of Hawaii to open the birth certificate to the public--especially since it's a full legal process, and is normally against the state of Hawaii's laws to be released as it is private information not within the public domain. Because, you know, those billable hours can get pretty high, and then you add in the court fees and expenses, the flights to and from Hawaii, etc., and of course, the teapartiers aren't going to want the TAXPAYERS to pay for it...What a ridiculous load. Trump is a blowhard and should be treated as such. And people who are against Obama aren't going to believe it, anyway, so why even bother? There are more important things going on in this country. Obama's mom was from Kansas, as far as I'm concerned that makes him a natural born citizen; if natural born citizen means he has to be born on American soil, then John McCain couldn't be president either as he was born in Panama.
