At Facebook HQ, Obama again touts deficit plan

President Obama addresses the crowd during a town hall meeting at Facebook headquarters in Palo Alto, Calif. on Wednesday. (AP)

From NBC's Athena Jones
PALO ALTO, Calif. -- President Barack Obama continued his push to sell what he calls his 'balanced' approach to deficit-cutting with an event at Facebook headquarters on Wednesday.

The town hall, which was moderated by the company's co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg, was the second one this week meant to highlight the president's plan to cut $4 trillion from the deficit over the next 12 years without making the kind of deep budget cuts Republicans have proposed. The president is set to hold a similar town hall tomorrow in Reno, NV.

Calling the plan passed by the Republican-controlled House of Representatives not "bold" or courageous, but "fairly radical" and "short-sighted", the president also argued it would be bad for the economy.

"The deficit could actually get worse, because we could slip back into another recession," Obama told the crowd, explaining what would happen if deficit reduction leads to cuts in economically vital areas like education, infrastructure and clean energy.

The event streamed live online and included questions from the audience and the web.

While the president's remarks broke no new ground -- with most of the questions and all of the answers fitting in nicely with the president's usual talking points -- it did offer the administration a chance to connect with people using technology and the cache of a web site that is wildly popular among young people and increasingly popular among older web users.

It's all part of the administration's effort to show voters -- many of whom are concerned about the nation's growing deficit -- that putting the country's fiscal house in order is among the president's top concerns. Obama said he did not want to leave getting the deficit and debt under control to the next president.

The White House took issue earlier Wednesday with the suggestion that the Obama camp had made great use of Facebook as part of its messaging strategy and that today's event could be construed as an effort to promote the social networking site in thanks.

"We get our message out in a variety of ways and the President appears in a variety of private enterprises to have events," White House Press Secretary Jay Carney told reporters aboard Air Force One. "This is not about endorsing a specific company; it’s about accepting an invitation for a forum to speak to the American people.  This is an excellent opportunity to do that."

Carney noted the site, with some 'half a billion users' reached 'more people than you can possibly imagine.'

Obama has met with Facebook executives several times, visiting with Zuckerberg in recent months and including COO Sheryl Sandberg in a strategy meeting at the White House yesterday on how to tackle comprehensive immigration reform.

The president answered questions about deficit, home mortgages and the Dream Act, among other topics, and closed by asking the mostly young crowd to 'double down' and remain engaged in the political process.

There were some light moments, like when Zuckerberg admitted to being a little nervous during his brief introduction at the top of the meeting and a short while later when Obama joked that he had gotten the young computer whiz to don a suit -- more accurately a shirt, tie, blazer and jeans.

Zuckerberg gave Obama a Facebook hoodie at the events close, telling the president "in case you want to dress like me."

It is so nice to have a Presidental administration that gives the public a chance to connect with people using technology and the cache of a web site that is wildly popular among young people and increasingly popular among older web users.

After all, the past president didn't even know how to use this method of communication; I doubt if he knew how to turn on a computer. Even if he did, no one wants to be frightened to death.

It's great the prez is making an effort to reach out. John Boehnor isn't nor is he listening to the American people.

People forget that Obama is the youngest President, and he's dealing with a bunch of old fogey Senators and Congressmen. He has forward looking ideas, but the Congress wants status quo, everything to remain the same. There's no reason why we shouldn't have high-speed rail in this country. One of the reasons (among others) that we're losing American companies is because the infrastructure in Europe and Asia is better than here.

Zuckerman said he didn't mind paying more taxes. The only "rich" people crying at the ones making between $250K and $1Mil. if you're worth $100Mil, what's another $100,000 in taxes going to mean? Nothing. You won't even feel it.

I think the issue for the rich millionaires is -- will Congress & the President spend that extra tax money wisely. I mean if they're f**cking up the taxes that the middle class pay, what will they do with $1Trill more?

Obama set another "open" town hall meeting. Lets get the corp CEO, a well known Obama man, to moderate a town hall meeting for his paid cronnies. What a joke this Pres has become. Set us up and mow us down. Fortunately most the Independents and moderates are smart enough to see throw the games this guy plays.

Pat, if you think this guy cares about the middle class you better go back to grade school. He is taking every incentive away from the middle class to show self reliance and achieve something because they can in a society that use to reward personal achievement. He is DESTROYING the middle class by creating a larger entitlement class. As long as he is a part of the elitist progressives he will continue to stifle creativity and economic growth. By the way, you don't know me so watch your ignorance. Better to to stay on subject.

Associated Press
April 17, 2011

The Internal Revenue Service tracks the tax returns with the 400 highest adjusted gross incomes each year. The average income on those returns in 2007, the latest year for IRS data, was nearly $345 million. Their average federal income tax rate was 17 percent, down from 26 percent in 1992.

The right are such hypocrites. One minute they're saying "cut the job training funds, cut unemployment benefits, cut low-income heating assistance because, you know, we can't afford them, and even if it's only a drop in the bucket on the deficit that's at least one drop."

But let anyone even hint at raising the top tax rates 1% from the lowest levels since the 1930's (where they are today), and they cry "Class warfare! Why, it won't even make any difference! Why are you picking on the rich?"

Hypocrites.

Actually, Obama is the fifth youngest to take office. T. Roosevelt, Kennedy, Clinton, and Grant were all younger when they took office.

Bev,

Yes, Isn't it so nice to have a President that is so devoted to his job of running for re-election. The goal of raising a Billion for his re-election, starting over 18 months before the election when he has no primary challenger.

How'd Obama do on any unemployment goals, any spending goals, goals to reduce the deficit / debt, goal to win in Afghanistan, goal to avoid stupid wars like Libya, goal ............

Speaking of going on-line, new technology as you put it and campaigning, seems Obama has spent $3 million on legal expenses to address federal campaign irregularities. Team Obam has has had to refund another $6 million to individuals .... a bunch of it seems to be foreign money. Something about 26 warning letters and 1,500 pages of compliance concerns - all regarding the 2008 obama election.

Online donor credit card fraud, seems about a 1,000 different people have the name Mr. Good Will who like to contribute $25 - and 330 have the same credit card number.

Ahhhh ......... the sweet smell of spring campaigning - Chicago style.

Well anyway, he is over his head at being President - let him do what he can do, the one thing he is good at .......... campaigning for President.

Rad,

Speaking of online campaigning and Daffy Duck and along the lines of the above seems Daffy Duck was a big contributor to Obama, along with Bart Simpson, Family Guy, King Kong, Mr. Doo Dad, Della Ware .......

I'm sure Obama will be on top on these irregularities this time. I hear he is going to hire Olga Fockyerself to handle all inquiries.

Government IS the problem across the board no matter which party you are affiliated with and that is the truth. I can tell you this, as a parent and husband, if I am struggling to support my wife and kids (which is the situation for many American families) why would I give money to ANYONE else. What happened was that American companies decided it is more profitable for them to amass $1 trillion in cash from record corporate profits instead of sharing it with their ever-more-productive workers in the form of a living wage.

A huge share of the nation's economic growth over the past 30 years has gone to the top one-hundredth of one percent, who now make an average of $27 million per household. The average income for the bottom 90 percent of us? $31,244.

How do you think the bottom 90% of us are going to afford to save for retirement, pay for all our own healthcare, send our kids to college AND just live day to day? Sorry, but that "self reliance" BS is just bull@!$%# when someone else is skimming off all the results of our hard-working productivity.

You know I come to read the post of most stories for comicial relief. Half the people here are fools and the other half are bigger fools for trying to argue with them. However, which is which , I'll not say but please keep dividing our country with name calling, refusal to see that everything in our country has gone to hell in a hand bag and that both parties have had generations to stop the bull but have not.

It's time to stop and think about things. How do you divide a country? You yell racism preach class envy, you tell the inexperienced that they are smarter than they are and use thier inexperience to put them against those that can teach them, you put fear in the elderly till they forget the truth and you make as many of them dependent on you as possible. You tell everybody how bad they have it and they can't make it better and there is no hope till they believe it and make them think it's someone elses fault. You pray on emotion till people no longer can think reasonably.

When you do these things you conquer the masses. Who do you think is conquering you?

As for Obama. I have never in my 35 years of political activity seen a man so full of himself or misleading in so many of the things he states, as Obama. My debate group of local Independents have overwhelmingly decided Obama must go before his inexperience and lack of leadership skills put the final death noose around the Middle classes neck.

At the very least even you are not so stupid to not recognize the down-spiraling economy, job loses, and failing housing market and auto industry, etc. occurred prior to this president taking office? Or were you still under your rock to see what was going on. You needed to suffer or suffer more to recognize what was averted. Show your american pride and denounce everything then return home under your rock.

The Drought Is Over (at Least for C.E.O.'s)

              NY Times, April 11, 2011

HAPPY days are back — in the corner office, at least.

After shrinking during the 2008-9 recession, paychecks for top American executives are growing again — in many cases, significantly so.

Rarely has the view from the corner office seemed so at odds with the view from the street corner. At a time when millions of Americans are trying to hang on to homes and millions more are trying to hang on to jobs, the chief executives of major corporations like 3M, General Electric and Cisco Systems are making as much today as they were before the recession hit. Indeed, some are making even more.

The disparity is especially stark as companies are swimming in cash. In the fourth quarter, profits at American businesses were up an astounding 29.2 percent, the fastest growth in more than 60 years. Collectively, American corporations logged profits at an annual rate of $1.678 trillion.

So far, this recovery has not trickled down. After two relatively lean years, C.E.O.'s in finance, technology, energy and beyond are pulling down multimillion-dollar paychecks. What many of these executives aren't doing, however, is hiring. Unemployment, although down from its peak, stood at 8.8 percent in March. And few economists predict the jobless rate will drop substantially anytime soon.

For the average C.E.O., however, the good times have returned. The median pay for top executives at 200 major companies was $9.6 million last year. That was a 12 percent increase over 2009, according to a study conducted for The New York Times by Equilar, a compensation consulting firm based in Redwood City, Calif.

And you working stiffs on here are going to swallow that GOP B.S. about "can't tax the rich" hook line and sinker? Who do you think is going to make up the difference?

YOU. (and your kids and grandkids and their kids)

Goebbels would be jealous of the media's cowering to Obama. Zuckerburg fell right into line, and all it took was letting company executives be involved in national policy making.

"Obama has met with Facebook executives several times, visiting with Zuckerberg in recent months and including COO Sheryl Sandberg in a strategy meeting at the White House yesterday on how to tackle comprehensive immigration reform."

Yes, and Obama is the "man in charge" as the S&P decreases our credit rating. That, my friend, was not Bush's fault. It is this administration's fault. The rating decrease was a direct "no confidence" vote in this administration's abilities.

Also, it has been Obama's out of control spending that has taken us to the brink in the last 2-1/2 years. He used the majority in Congress to bully through gigantic spending packages, Obamacare, and trample due process and the Constitution. It's not just about fact checking, buddy. It's about telling the whole story. And you are still trying to tell a story that is stale, and isn't working anymore. Obama is a big failure. It's time to grow up and admit your mistake.

Randall, a VERY large part of that deficit was $700billion in TARP funds.

              Which has been repaid.

              With interest.

So, what did Obama do with it?

Look at it this way- suppose you were looking at a deficit of $500 next year. Your child came to you in desperate struts- needed money for an operation. You loaned that child $700. Now your debt for the next year would be $1200.

Child recovers, repays $725- the money and agreed upon interest. Your debt should now be $475, right?

So, if your debt is ACTUALLY $1600, what happened?

Obviously, you did a little spending, now, didn't you?

Obama is like a lot of snake oil salesmen- he talks a lot, around, over, and through the topic, until you are so confused, you think he must be right. He has shills who give testimonials about the efficacy and tastiness of his product, and, before you know it, you have bought a ton of his product.

Not until you are at death's door do you discover that what he sold you was toxic.

That is where America is today.

There's no doubt you get my point. There reason and logic why 1+1=2. People have to use reason and logic in all areas that affect the country and it's people. They need to get over R or D politics; to stop supporting an party despite their own self interest. And for God's sake get over the superficial arguments

If you judge a channel by the commentary they you will never find a fair channel.

                  Like MSNBC?

First Immelt was rewarded for his propaganda with a jobs czar position and now Facebook executives are invited to participate in forming national laws. Facebook will probably probably get a few no-tax years, or zuckerburg will receive a government "czar" appointment for his obedience.

"Obama has met with Facebook executives several times, visiting with Zuckerberg in recent months and including COO Sheryl Sandberg in a strategy meeting at the White House yesterday on how to tackle comprehensive immigration reform."

                  Obama has to be kidding!...

"The deficit could actually get worse, because we could slip back into another recession," Obama told the crowd, explaining what would happen if deficit reduction leads to cuts in economically vital areas like education, infrastructure and clean energy.

Cut back the federal dept of education, we don't need duplication of services with the states. Infrastructure, wtf did he do with the fuel and road use taxes? Clean energy is still years away, Besides Iowa is generating more energy via wind than they can find investors to run power lines to points east.

Surprised he didn't mention how he feels about medicare since he cut $500 billion in funding for it.

interesting how he also chose to ignor giving any numbers to his plan, maybe pelosi, reid and biden has them?

0bama has no plan to cut the deficit/debt. He wouldn't know how to cut anything that had to do with spending.

Come on Obama has formed 2 committees to get the budget under control. The first one he did not agree with so he started another one. And he will continue to start them until he gets one that his corp puppeteers agree with. What a false front. Say whatever it takes to the crowds to please them and then ignore those statements to do what he wants.

Repeal Obama and his health care mess. We, the middle class can not afford him or his failed policies.

Why didn't Obama have this plan as his 2012 Fiscal Year Budget???

This plan is so much different from his 2012 Budget WHY???

Looks like he was forced to come out with a plan that cut instead of spend.

That is how you balance a budget, spend until the deficit is gone. What a failed policy..........

As an independent who looks at the non-partisan figures and facts as I form my opinion, I have to agree that we need a balanced approach to solving the deficit problem. Unfortunately the Republicans have only one gear on their car and it's CUT. Even the conservative Cato institution has suggested clearing the decks of all corporate welfare as one of the starting points and save the taxpayer $$125 billion per year. If and when all of our politicians get serious about this problem we will come to see that a balanced approach is the one that works best and does not throw the burden of the deficit on just the middle class and seniors.

Equal cuts across the board are needed. Then attack the porkers, defense, welfare, entitlements, etc...

Repeal the biggest spending spree in USA History and set spending at 2008 levels. Repeal the health care mess, that bill alone will bankrupt the middle class. I for one do not want to have to get a third job to support taxes that the rich or poor will live off of. If your bank acct is drained and you can not borrow any more, first step is to stop the spending. Not go out and get a another job so you can spend more. That theory is pure suicide.

Independent and for the repeal of Obama and his health care mess.......

Watching Obama's "Town Hall" meetings, looks to me like he only speaks at college campuses. I wonder why. Could it be that if he spoke in front of us taxpayers, he would get blasted? He is a SPEND guy who, now, is trying to hide it by his deficit reduction bull. I'd love to see him debate Trump. Trump would demolish him. I'll take bets that Obama will NEVER debate Trump. He is afraid of him. Any takers?

Beverly, we still have to pay the same amount at the end of the year. So really we are just digging a hole faster as the government will just borrow that money anyway, spend it, and then we will have to pay the interest as well.

When you want to find out what the average American thinks you need to go the source. And GE has just announced the creation in this country of 3 new industrial operations. They already employ 133,000 and pay an average of 20% over the years in taxes.

LOL, GE paid ZERO in taxes, 0. Immelt is one of, if not the biggest shipper of jobs overseas. "PJ" go back to bed. Obama has done so little to complete his campaign promises.
