Onetime fan Trump now not so hot on 'worst president ever'

Last February – on the eve of the passage of a controversial health care bill and amidst increasing skepticism of the 2009 stimulus plan – many voters who had previously supported Barack Obama were beginning to sour on the president.

But one prominent American was still willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

“I really like him. We'll have to see how he does,” Donald Trump told CNN in an interview. “On a personal basis, I like him. … Right now, he's at that tipping point. It's going to go one way or the other.

It was, apparently, a steep slope after that tipping point. In an interview last week, Trump categorically dubbed Obama “the worst president ever.”

But Trump, whose presidential flirtations have been coupled with television omnipresence in recent months, has only taken a tough view of the most recent resident of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue within the last year.

As late as April 2010, just a year ago, Trump said that “the jury’s still out” on Obama’s job performance, noting just that he’d “like to see” the president get tougher on OPEC and China.

At times, Trump’s disdain for George W. Bush provided the backdrop for the real estate mogul’s optimism about Obama.

In March 2009, after the passage of the stimulus, Trump pointed – as the Obama administration itself has often done – to mistakes made by Obama’s predecessor as the primary origins of the nation’s economic woes.

“I think we have a president who is working very hard and trying very hard. He inherited a mess,” Trump said of Obama, adding that he believed the nation was on track for a quick recovery. “I really believe that it is going to get very good, and I think within two years it will be like the old days, but with some restrictions [on the economy.]”

It’s no secret that Trump has evolved on several GOP plank issues; including abortion (he was once pro-choice but recently explained his pro-life conversion) and health care (he wrote in a 2000 book “we must have universal healthcare.”)

But he has also praised specific plans backed by the Obama administration to jumpstart the economic recovery, some of them particularly reviled by the Tea Party constituency he hopes to court.

In February 2009, for example, Trump embraced Obama’s efforts to cap the salaries of Wall Street executives whose companies were receiving government support, saying “he’s absolutely right” to institute salary limits.

In the same interview, he hailed the young administration’s plans to inject funds into the economy, affirming that “I would certainly vote for a stimulus.”

The Donald has also repeatedly praised the Troubled Asset Relief Program (which passed under President George W. Bush and was backed by both 2008 presidential nominees), saying that the hastily-passed bank bailout bill saved the economy from certain disaster.

"A year ago, the government did the right thing or really I believe we would have been in a depression," he said in the fall of 2009.

And in December of that year, Trump praised the administration for meeting with banking executives but lamented the reluctance of financial organizations to do more to loosen more funds for loans. Their unwillingness to listen to the White House, he added, “show[ed] a great lack of respect for the president.”

By the way, Trump's naming of Obama as "the worst president ever" updates his previous statements about his least-favorite leader of the free world.

“I think Bush is probably the worst president in the history of the United States,” he said in March 2007.

Trump said he will take on China, " they don't the card, we do" I'm guessing he is referring to send George W. Bush to destroy their economy, some can think that it will take(Bush) as little to six month to get done. He(Bush) is the most qualified to do the job. No wonder why he is aligned to the Republican party.

If you're really stupid enough to buy into Trump's nonsense, be my guest! Vote for him! I insist.

Never mind the fact that "the Donald" has run himself and his companies into and out of bankruptcy how many times?

There are a lot of really ignorant people who will vote for anyone who can get the backing of the Koch brothers' money which will buy unlimited TV time.

The Republicans and their racist, bigotted followers are trying to make American politics all about getting rid of the black guy in the White House.

Sure, they don't actually say the words, but they're just like the nasty old cow in Orange county who put out the chimpanzee photo.

So, I say if you really want to support that kind of politics, and go back to the "good old days" of racial bias and even segregation...

Go ahead! vote for a bigot!

I'm counting on the rest of the country's recognizing this campaign against the President for what it is.

If I'm wrong and Americans buy into this nonsense, then we might as well tear down Washington DC and foirget about the "...land of the free, and the home of the brave."

Maybe Tom Brokaw and Steven Spielberg were right. Maybe the greatest generation of Americans are gone, and we've now got the dregs of humanity trying to take over by laying down with the racists, bigots, and their ultra-rich backers.

Your delusional and paranoid. You just think in terms of black and white, yes let's go back to the 60's and the days of riots, that makes sense. Your nuts if you think the Republicans or Donald Trump want to do that. Everyone is racist in your mind.

    @beantown

Funny that the person to whom you are commenting said none of those things. And you do know what they say about assumptions right?

It's simple really, the Republicans are cashing in on those who no matter what Obama does will spin facts to the negative, actively oppose even if he said the sky was blue and blame him for stuff that isn't even concievably his fault if one used logic or even some trace of rationality. I've seen it happen, in my personal life and writ largely in the media. And for all I can see President Obama is just another enept, ineffective bufoon, with not much difference than his predessors save content of BS rhetoric, only his skin pigmentation is different really. It's not exactly rocket science to notice.

There has never been nor will there ever be a President worse than GWB. It will never be possible for another President to put this Country in 14 trillion dollars of debt in eight years. Trump's opinion has about as much significance as S&P's opinion, they are both worthless.

Chump will make GWB look like FDR or Lincoln.......Mr. combover can't even manage casinos from going bankrupt and he wants the reins to the country?

Stop the presses! John Williams has spoken and he says we will never have a President as bad as GWB. Thank you for the information. But I guess it must have been his second term that he was so awful because 51% voted him back in! Not all people feel as you do and you are not the authority on such matters, it is just your opinion (which 51% of the country doesn't share) so I guess that puts you in the minority on your opinion, sorry. BTW where can i get a crystal ball like you have so I can see the future?

Yeah, well we'll see. Trump is already demonstrating what most folks hate in a president, flip flopping on issues, people of interest. I think he is just a big blowhard, and don't neccessarily think he would make a great president. Oh yeah, and the GOP has always been big on "moral character" (remember the almost impeachment of Bill Clinton?) Well, as far as that goes, I don't think Trump is a good representative, he has left two wives for the company of a younger woman.

I'd vote for him over Obama any day of the week, at least with his business skills maybe he can get us out of the economic mess we're in. I don't think he is putting on an act and secretly working for the democrats, that is just plain stupid of people to claim. They wish it was true.

What this country desperately needs is for our representatives to work together to solve the problems. What we need is real cooperation, bipartisanship and moderation with a honest and responsible centrist mentality concentrating on benefit for all of the people. What we need is to get rid of those representatives who stubbornly advocate “their way or no way”; those who arrogantly fault and block all efforts without ever offering anything constructive; those who obnoxiously take the people for granted with their deceptive rhetoric intended to rationalize and disguise their irresponsibility; those who belligerently focus only on their political ambitions and on being ‘puppets’ for the few who strongly support them and who ‘pull their strings’; those representatives who really are the problem, never the solution and always just try to con and manipulate the public.

What we need, what is really necessary to achieve all of that is for the people, the voters, to get out of their narrow thinking, to put their biases, prejudices and emotional attachments aside so that they can’t be so easily conned and manipulated. When the people reject the subterfuge, when they refuse to be duped and used, then the representatives can’t just concentrate on those with the power, influence and money, who use it all to deceptively control public opinion, and instead they then have to focus on real answers for the majority. The people have to be real, they have to be responsible and honest, first with themselves, and disciplined to be objective and rational just to avoid being continually used and then abused. The people have to see and accept the need for the answers to be for everyone, even when including some equitable sacrifice by everyone. Can the people do it or are they stuck in their limited thinking, accepting the dishonesty because they are closed minded and then taken in by the drastic, often even bazaar, appeals to their biases, prejudices and emotional attachments, all aggressively aimed to deceive and control them?

First of all, who would want this job???!!! That said, I do not think Obama has been a very good President, but it is not for any of the reasons the Right says (since they live in a paranoid world of unreality anyway--I mean, "socialist"? Give me a break!) He clearly is inexperienced and, unlike Lincoln, has not seemed to grow into the job (remember, Lincoln was vilified while in office with the most vicious attacks and name-calling in U.S. history, that is, until, now). He does not have Reagan, Clinton charm--although I personally did not find either charming--and their ability to connect with people. He seems buffeted about by events rather than taking a stand and rising above to leadership. I wanted him to succeed, but he is not up to it. I will say the Arizona speech was amazing, but he has to do more than give good speeches. Obama is the very picture of a centrist, which can be a good thing, but in his case it puts him behind the 8-ball.

How could anyone support a party that does this to their own people. And say that they are a true American. You be the judge Neil, George Jr., George Sr., and Jeb Bush
The Savings and Loan industry had been experiencing major problems through the late 60s and 70s due to rising inflation and rising interest rates. Because of this there was a move in the 1970s to replace the role of S&L institutions with banks.
In the early 1980s, under Reagan, regulatory changes took place that gave the S&L industry new powers and for the first time in history measures were taken to increase the profitability of S&Ls at the expense of promoting home ownership.
A history of the S&L situation can be found here:

What is important to note about the S&L scandal is that it was the largest theft in the history of the world and US tax payers are who was robbed.
The problems occurred in the Savings and Loan industry as they relate to theft because the industry was deregulated under the Reagan/Bush administration and restrictions were eased on the industry so much that abuse and misuse of funds became easy, rampant, and went unchecked.
Additional facts on the Savings and Loan Scandal can be found here:

There are several ways in which the Bush family plays into the Savings and Loan scandal, which involves not only many members of the Bush family but also many other politicians that are still in office and still part of the Bush Jr. administration today. Jeb Bush, George Bush Sr., and his son Neil Bush have all been implicated in the Savings and Loan Scandal, which cost American tax payers over $1.4 TRILLION dollars (note that this is about one quarter of our national debt).
Between 1981 and 1989, when George Bush finally announced that there was a Savings and Loan Crisis to the world, the Reagan/Bush administration worked to cover up Savings and Loan problems by reducing the number and depth of examinations required of S&Ls as well as attacking political opponents who were sounding early alarms about the S&L industry. Industry insiders were aware of significant S&L problems as early 1986 that they felt would require a bailout. This information was kept from the media until after Bush had won the 1988 elections.
Jeb Bush defaulted on a $4.56 million loan from Broward Federal Savings in Sunrise, Florida. After federal regulators closed the S&L, the office building that Jeb used the $4.56 million to finance was reappraised by the regulators at $500,000, which Bush and his partners paid. The taxpayers had to pay back the remaining 4 million plus dollars.
Neil Bush was the most widely targeted member of the Bush family by the press in the S&L scandal. Neil became director of Silverado Savings and Loan at the age of 30 in 1985. Three years later the institution was belly up at a cost of $1.6 billion to tax payers to bail out.
The basic actions of Neil Bush in the S&L scandal are as follows:
Neil received a $100,000 "loan" from Ken Good, of Good International, with no obligation to pay any of the money back.
Good was a large shareholder in JNB Explorations, Neil Bush's oil-exploration company.
Neil failed to disclose this conflict-of-interest when loans were given to Good from Silverado, because the money was to be used in joint venture with his own JNB. This was in essence giving himself a loan from Silverado through a third party.
Neil then helped Silverado S&L approve Good International for a $900,000 line of credit.
Good defaulted on a total $32 million in loans from Silverado.
During this time Neil Bush did not disclose that $3 million of the $32 million that Good was defaulting on was actually for investment in JNB, his own company.
Good subsequently raised Bush's JNB salary from $75,000 to $125,000 and granted him a $22,500 bonus.
Neil Bush maintained that he did not see how this constituted a conflict of interest.
Neil approved $106 million in Silverado loans to another JNB investor, Bill Walters.
Neil also never formally disclosed his relationship with Walters and Walters also defaulted on his loans, all $106 million of them.
Neil Bush was charged with criminal wrongdoing in the case and ended up paying $50,000 to settle out of court. The chief of Silverado S&L was sentenced to 3.5 years in jail for pleading guilty to $8.7 million in theft. (Keep in mind that you can get more jail time for holding up a gas station for $50.)
Today Neil Bush is working on closing a deal in Florida, where his brother Jeb is governor, to sell a software package to schools with his startup company Ignite.
Update 11/28/2003: Some of Neil Bush's business deals have been exposed in his recent divorce case. For more on this see:

It should also be noted that shortly after news of Neil Bush’s involvement in the S&L scandal hit the press his father, George Bush Sr., announced the Desert Storm campaign in Iraq, which subsequently had the result of making Neil’s name quickly fade from the headlines. In addition, while Neil Bush's divorce proceeding were exposing more backroom Bush dealings, America was once again bombarded with war propaganda for Operation Iraq Freedom.
The S&L scandal is by no means the only incident of questionable, and actually illegal, financial activity that the Bush family has been involved in. The line of questionable, illegal, and unethical businesses practices goes back at least to Prescott Bush Sr., George Bush Sr.’s father. Prescott Bush was a Senator from 1952 – 1963. Previous to his time as a Senator Prescott was a banker and businessman. Prior to the American entry into WWII Prescott Bush was director of Union Banking Corporation. Union Banking Corporation helped to finance Hi--er’s regime. The Concentration Camps of N--i Germany were labor camps that the Na--s used to make products for their regime as well as for sale to raise money. Prescott profited directly from the Auschwitz la--r camp.
In 1942, after Hi--er declared war on America the United States government seized the Union Banking Corporation under the Trading with the Enemy Act as a front operation that was supporting the N--is. Much of the profits from the operation were already pocketed by Prescott however, and $1.5 million was put in a trust fund for George Bush Sr.
For more on Prescott Bush's ties to the Na--s see:

The issues of WWII will be revisited again later.
This is actually just the tip of the iceberg as far as the Bush family and business dealings are concerned, the topic is a book in itself. In the interest of brevity I invite you to research the Bush family business ties yourself, including those in Saudi Arabia, where George Bush made millions as an oil well developer, and George Bush’s $14 million deal when he sold the Texas Rangers, while leaving tax payers footing the bill.

Really? You had to put place this in the Donald Trump article huh? I don't like how you try to label a whole party based on individuals actions. You seem to be a half way smart guy, but this is just silly.

I guess when Bush and his family did this, Obama was snorting cocaine getting ready to write his not one, but two autobiograhies! :) lol How can anyone support this party...? You can see how silly your arguement is!

I would agree with US ARMY RETIRED. But some of you do not want to face the truth about the GOP and the Bush family, only the truth about the Democratic Party and Obama (which you don't since you believe talk radio lies instead). America will continue its rapid decline as long as we are unwilling to face reality and hold BOTH political parties accountable. One more thing: the Tea Party has no answers--they offer nothing constructive or positive that will actually move this country forward. Talk radio is just propaganda for wealthy and powerful individuals and corporation to rob us blind, unless we wake up to the fast one they are pulling on us.

And the number of states in this nation isn't exactly something that calls for a lot of research, does it? Well, for all of you it might, since not a SINGLE ONE of you ever said anything about it, but instead took it as the Gospel according to Obama.

You didn't say anything when Obama jumped up and said the police "acted stupidly" without EVER knowing the facts of the case when his racist buddy was arrested for harassing a cop? Nope, can't do that. After all, Obama is so smart and intelligent that he knew right away that the white AND BLACK officers that arrested his buddy were just racists in uniform, right?

You didn't have any comment whatsoever when Obama claimed that "just this past week, we passed out of the U.S. Senate Banking Committe, which is my committee, a bill to call for divestment from Iran..." of course talking about a committee that he was NOT on and had NEVER been on.

You didn't say anything when he claimed that "ten thousand people died, an entire town destroyed" when a Kansas tornado killed 12 people.

Nope, you don't say a single thing when Obama shows that he's uninformed, racist, and completely uneducated when it comes to the simplest things in this nation.

But by God, let a conservative not know all the ins and outs of a decision made by the Supreme Court FORTY YEARS AGO, and you go crazy.

Go to the blog that talks about his "budget" plans. There's not ONE SINGLE one of you in there defending him. If he's such a Godsend to this nation, I'd think you be in there spewing you personal hatred and filth filled garbage toward people that don't toe the "social justice" line if he's so damn wonderful.

                                                                      • 1 vote

Cheryl, this is a pretty central issue in American politics, unlike whether Obama mispoke about the number of state, which I think we can agree he knows full well.

You would think that a presidential nominee wannabe would know the legal underpinnings for Roe v Wade. Apparently not.

                                                                        #129.1 - Tue Apr 19, 2011 4:27 PM EDT

Why should ANYONE know the "legal underpinnings" of Roe v Wade. All ANYONE knows about the basics of it is that it made abortion legal.

I've seen liberals in here defending it based on the 4th amendment, although the decision was based on the 14th amendment.

I've seen liberals in here defending "reproductive rights", although the decision was NOT based solely on a woman's reproductive rights, but her right to privacy.

I've seen liberals in here talking about a woman's right to choose, although the decision said it was SUPPOSED to be based on TWO things, protecting prenatal life and protecting the mother's health.

Why should ANYONE know the legalities of it? It's been bastardized to the point that if you show up at Planned Parenthood pregnant, the first thing they ask is if you want an abortion.

Do you think Obama knows the "legal underpinnings" of Roe v Wade? Hell, he's refused to even discuss it other than to say it was "above his pay grade".

It's ignorant to attempt to cherry pick someone based on an entrapment question. It's also ignorant to think that a political candidate knows EVERYTHING about everything.

The Supreme Court made the decision about Roe v Wade, NOT politicians.

But of course, all that doesn't matter does it?

Nope, it's all about Trump doesn't know what the legalities of Roe v Wade is so therefore he can't be President.

Based on that kind of IDIOCY, what in the hell is Obama doing discussing the budget? After all he doesn't know a single thing about Wall Street. He doesn't know a single thing about investments. He doesn't know a single thing about running a business, making a profit, or ANYTHING else that has to do with the budgets, taxes, insurance costs, overhead costs, or anything else.

All he knows is "social justice", "redistribution", and tax, borrow, and spend.

Obama should resign because he doesn't understand the "legal underpinnings" of RUNNING THE NATION.

                                                                        • 1 vote

What I got was a horrible interviewer asking a question that was somewhat obtuse then trying to mold it they way they wanted to. Trump was actually smart asking why are youasking this question. I hope Obamacare covers spine transplant for this moron reporter.
