By a vote of 81-19, the Senate has passed a bill to fund the government for the rest of year, officially averting a government shutdown with its approval of the budget deal struck late last week.
The bill, which passed the House earlier this afternoon, now goes to the president's desk.
Fifteen Republican senators, three Democrats, and one independent (who caucuses with Democrats) voted against the measure.

Outstanding. Thank you United States Government.
Job well done. It was just 6 days ago when we weren't sure what the outcome of this situation would be. Nice to see the two parties come together on this. Speaker Boehner needed the Democrats evidently. That's cool. We all need each other if we want to accomplish important things.
I couldn't agree more Pat
and one independent (who caucuses with Democrats) voted against the measure.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Heh heh, Bernie, you trouble-maker.
We Can Work It Out
I love Senator Sanders.
As Paul sang when his then girlfriend Jane Asher wouldn't return his telephone calls - think of what I'm saying - we can work it out and get it straight or say goodnight.
We Can Work It Out. We Can Work It Out.
Actually, Paul & Jane never did work it out. The engagement was called off.
But our government survived. With a little help from our Democratic Friends & President.
Dem's just practicing their folding!!!
You think passing the remainder of FY11 was hard...FY12 is going to be monstrous.
No. Republicans are no longer dominating the conversation. That "domination" is what yesterday's speech was intended to interrupt,…… in case you missed it Bill, Fairfax VA.
To date republican solutions to America's problems are polarized tonics that, to be kind, heavily advantage aristocratic / corporate interests. Any common American extolling or embracing this plan is compromised by a diseased ideology, rich, or they're halt of mind.
Recent republican success can be tied to their masterful manipulation of messaging, the press, and their propaganda subsidiary, Fox News. I am sincerely acknowledging what republicans are good at here. Seriously. This is not a back-handed compliment. Democrats could learn volumes from the republicans. In the matter of propaganda the republicans have evolved EONS past the Democrats. They are an entirely different evolutionary order. They are light years ahead of the Dems, and most Dems don't even seem to realize it. Dems are left to non-focused, random, inarticulate mumbling as they watch the skillful manipulators lead them around by the nose. This planet has not seen a truth-warping, spin doctoring republican apparatus of this magnitude, scope, reach, ability and power since 1935 Germany, and with the same implications for the world, and no, I won't back down from that characterization!!
Ever wonder why republicans put so much effort into propaganda? Ever wonder why republicans assign so much attention to messaging? Ever wonder why republicans thought it important enough to design, buy and set up their own NATIONWIDE network of radio stations, newspapers, magazines, and an entire television station devoted to pumping up and promulgating the republican manifesto? Why do republicans have this endemic political inferiority complex? Why do republicans overcompensate to the extent they do? Why the near-maniacal need to aggressively inject their ideology into every fiber of America?
Quite simply: They do it because they need to.
The morally-bankrupt republican approach to economics has been discredited in the social laboratory of Darwinian mechanics. The near extinction of our nation's economy was caused by a wholesale embrace of republican economic method that climaxed in 2007. Without urgent, massive intervention and life support, the subject would have died of acute repubicanism overexposure.
If they pass the republican budget, America will resume its erosion.
Greg,
That speech was good, President Obama is a wonderful speaker.
But it had as much substance in it as a McDonald's fried pie, looks great, smells great, just NO filling! (yes I know they are baked now)
All his plan does is kick the can further down the road. NO real cuts, NO reforming of entitlements, Just tax and spend crap. Something they wouldn't have to do if they would just reform the tax code.
By the Way, How's that government handout helping Detroit's GM?
You are a real nut case, but I love it. One place you are wrong though, you dem's aren't learning
look at msnbc's failed experiment yet they keep on failing and failing.
Yeah Greg, cause it's the dems that are all about cutting the budget.
Theirs is the base that is demanding action on the debt ceiling and curtailing the deficits.
Yep, Greg the dems are totally in the drivers seat and are in control. Dude, they are totally winning with all the debt, deficit and cutting talk.
And Detroit is one of America's finest up and coming cities, right? Or was it the republicans that set Detroit on it's current path?
Detroit Rock City! So are they not literally razing large parts of Detroit now? Is that progress? Is that the progressive ideal? Oh my!
Are you as good at challenging the assertions in post #5 as you are slamming a beaten-down old city?
Cmon' Spanks. Be a man. Lets see some o' that repub testicular fortitude.
You been swiping at some pretty low-hanging fruit lately, kid. Besides,...who was that the Tigers beat the s**t out of in the 1984 World Series? Oh yeah,....I knew it would come to me.
Your going with the 1984 series? That's what you got.
Yep, the Padres lost. Me, I am a basketball guy.
I think I was at the beach that week. Tomorrow it'll be "lunch at mission beach at a deck bar over the beach. Looking to be about 75 and sunny tomorrow. :)
Don't get burned! It was 81 degrees and sunny in Detroit last Saturday. Look it up. Walleye fishermen are getting out in the Lakes now.
Trout starts next month.
You two should be politicians because that was a stupid but fun exchange. carry on
John, First we have to get past the issue of the debt ceiling. If they don't get that done we may not have to worry about 2012.
I realize that with as much flip/flop'n as obummer has done so far there still a lot of the starry eyed. But two more years of his @!$%#, will be enough for even the rest of those in La/La land.
Even soros is getting upset with obummer, he will be replaced by van jones if he doesn't keep his promise to soros.
Greg,
You really believe that stuff? Kinda extreme don't you think?
thetotas
Believe it heart and soul theotas. Extreme is the damage done to this country.
O!
Gary,
I asked Greg.
Greg seem pretty intense.
Seems that Greg has not gotten all of the federal funds that he deserves from his GM Stock.
I'm from the Detroit area Greg must got my share? I not sure what fruitcake costs any more, but I've gotta feeling Greg was able to get his share.
Barkin' up the wrong tree boys. I work for Chrysler. The Bush/ Obama bailout money is working fine for America thank you.
We have paid America back, with interest, and Chrysler is looking to do an IPO late next year after we settle up with the Feds. GM is on track to do the same. I personally objected to them handing out ANY bonus money to ANYONE (including me) until we settled up, but there it goes.
Thanks to Bush and Obama we have saved an American industry. We have also saved an industry vital to our strategic war efforts in the event of any invasion incursion into US territory. My Mom was a Rosie the Riveter here, worked on B-29 bombers, and my Dad's assembly line at Cadillac produced tanks and fighter fuselages. We still manufacture Bradley Fighting Vehicles and M1A1A Abrahms tanks here. Williams Intnl. makes cruise missile engines.
Four million tax-generating jobs were saved by Obama/Bush, but Bush rarely gets credit.
Obama averted a Depression by saving us. Plain and simple.
Gee, Greg,
Seems that your company is always living on government handouts. When are we going to let those crooks go out of business. Seems like every other Democratic President is bailing them out. I am just wondering how much Chrysler will get hurt when our President starts cutting military--as he stated yesterday.
You must be one that got away from the camera, your union buddy obama didn't do anything for me bailing you out. your 4 mil number is a bunch obama/union crap. Saved or created is/was a figment of obama's imagination. Obama not only plays a good game at the podium he's a real wiz with numbers too.
Funny you touched on that Bear. Chrysler won't get hurt much. We have no direct remaining defense interests / contracts, although we do ship Jeeps to Egypt's army, and I think the Saudis buy some too.
The Abrahms tank was sold by Chrysler to General Dynamics in the late eighties I think. It is America's battle tank, and the envy of the world's armies. GD has a large facility here at 18 Mile Road and Mound.
Other nations subsidize their key, strategic industries. Problem is, you do too. We have 38,000 troops on the Korean border to protect Huyundai's ability to export cars here to put Americans out of jobs. Then your taxes buys welfare cheese for displaced workers that want to work. We have bases in Okinawa to counter the Chinese threat for Japan too,....all on YOUR dime kiddo.
Their countries and companies play to win in a competitive world where America is no longer the only Tiger prowling the forest. Germany does the same. China has become the #1 economy by adopting innovative economic methods: ours. China puts a 26% tariff on our goods, but we put only a 2% tariff on theirs. How is Detroit, or anywhere, going to beat that? China is simply adopting the American trade methods of the Carter era, pre Reagan.
It's workin' for em',....wouldn't you say?
And there it is. Greg is just another attached to the government tit.
China cheats, but that ain't the reason american cars suck. Too bad I used to only buy american. Have not bought an american car - because of quality issues, in 20 years.
But hey Chrysler is all Fiat, which is Italian, Si Greg?
Chrysler's got at most 3-5 more years. Greg - I do hope you are looking elsewhere for employment.
Nope. Don't need to Spanks. Funny you should mention Fiat Spanky. Yesterday they announced that they were buying in for more of Chrysler. They own 30% now I think. They are on track to own 56% of Chrysler soon.
Government teat eh? San Diego. Let's see. What is their dominant employer in San Diego? Oh yes. I knew it would come to me!! Why it's the UNITED STATES NAVY isn't it?
SAN DIEGO IS ON THE GOVERNMENT TEAT???!!!!
How long has this been going on Spanks? Every year since Pearl Harbor? For SHAME Spanky, FOR SHAME!! Spanky you little Socialist!!!
Detroit was a one-time LOAN that we are paying back WITH INTEREST!!! You know the difference between a loan and a bailout don't cha' Spanker? The government MADE money on the Detroit deal. How much did they make on that $787 Billion gift from Bush?
Any answers, or just more questions from you?
He only does questions Greg. Spankster the gnat! Just wave him and his ilk away and keep speaking the truth. They eventually run from that.
I thought that the President was pretty condescending yesterday. I tuned him out the minute I saw his attitude. He needs to keep his emotions in check, not very presidential.
If he wants to connect to the people and have his voice heard, 86 the tude.
I thought the Republican's "deal" was pretty condescending myself. If they want to connect with people, then they better clean up their act and get a Jobs Bill together, which is what they ran on.
Instead they talk about defunding PP and all the other garbage they can come up with. And The Donald. He sure represents Corporate America well. He's the face of Corporate America, the Corporate America who brought this Nation to its knees.
He talks about Birth Certificates. What a joke he is. He is Exhibit "A" to all that is wrong with Corporate America.
No kidding, Pat.
Pat,
I think the President always speaks well. But where are the real cuts, why is it that only the rich have to pay more in taxes, while 47% pay nothing. Why doesn't he just go after tax codes. That alone would add billions to the money he wants to spend.
And why, a man, who yesterday seemed so intent on ending debt, did he ask for more than $1.65 trillion in his next budget? And you all don't believe he is "kicking down" the road. WOW
How does everyone forget what his highass said on the campaign trail about how "HE" was going to create jobs. He is as full of @!@# as his followers
Gary: You are adding nothing to the discussion, and making clear that you simply hate the President. One has to wonder if it is because he is a Democrat...or black.
nnd -
Why are you so condescending? You talk down to everyone, its ugly. Oh FYI we know Obama is part black, why do you always bring it up? Do you have a problem with that? Just plain ugly.
Now that was my contribution for today.
Have a good evening, I know I will.
I asked you a substantive question. Only the small minded would turn that into "condescending". Oh, wait, I remember, someone read something to you that said that liberals were condescending. That explains your original post. Now. Do you have something to add about what the President talked about? If not, don't waste our time. As to bringing up the President's race...I also brought up his party affiliation. Which one is it for you? The reason I bring it up is simple. At the heart of "teabaggery" is tribalism. The subheading of tribalism is racism. That is who they are.
and NDD shows him or herself to be the racist bigot. While those from the left claim to be for "everyone", they see color and class so much more than others and then try to pit one against the other.
Always the excuse from the "teabaggers" right, words? When I point out the obvious, and ask the relevant question, your only response is a childish "it's not me, it's YOU?" So which is it for you? Party affiliation or race? Or are you too much in denial to answer?
ndd
You know nothing about the Tea Party. You are as guilty as everyone else here with the talking points. Please put me on ignore.
Know one likes arrogance, and you reek of it. I can see why you love this president, but really its not a good trait.
Better not mess with him BigBear62, I think he bites.
He duz.
theotas: do you have anything of value to add to what is a political blog? "I tuned him out the minutes I saw his attitude", no projection there, right theotas? Pray tell, how did you determine his attitude "if you tuned him out". Or were you determined to be displeased, and since you are not capable of intelligent discourse, you resort to junior high attacks? Now. Do you have anything of value to add about what the President talked about? Hmmmmm?
FYI,
We at Chrysler are at least taking steps to remain frugal. During the dark times we programmed our printers to print on both sides of the paper. Cut paper costs 50%. We did not tell our snow removal contractor to plow the top deck of the parking structures, to save money. We did not have the lawns mowed at any of our facilities. Grass was real long in some non-visible areas.
Non-Bargaining Unit management were let go. Some, like my boss were cut loose really unceremoniously.
I used to have 9 or 10 management between me and another guy. Now, I got two. In 1999 we had around 110,000 employees. Today we have about 45,000.
BTW the Detroit three are looking to add 35,000 additional jobs by 2015. They're hiring like nuts now. Michigan's unemployment rate dropped to 10.3% last week with more drops coming.
Thanks Obama, Bush.
I rented a Charger the other day. I really wanted to like it. I love the way it looks.
Same as my '85 Camaro ZR1- sweet looking, kick ass motor, total pile of crap.
What is the deal with american car dashes? You can land a plane on them.
It had 2,500 miles on it, and the frigging check engine light was on.
Are you guys feeding me these over the plate lobs on purpose? This is embarrassing!! The Charger and the Grand Cherokee were named as having the "ten best interiors" by some publication or other. They were awarded this on Monday. The interior you drove was an older product.
The Charger you rented and other Chrysler products you cite were produced during the years we were "merged" with Daimler and or Cerberus Capital Management. Daimler used us for a cheap dumping ground for German car parts, and Cerberus starved our product offerings of content so that they could "strip and flip" us. Only the recession, a freeze on world credit and Barack Obama prevented them from doing it. That is what Cerberus does for a living. They kill companies and suck the life blood out of them.
Cerberus is headed up by none other than John Snow. You might find his name on some of the bills in your pocket as he was G.W. Bush's Sec. of Treasury. Another Cerberus officer is J. Danforth Quayle, remember him? Another repub. brain trust.
These guys specialize in the parasitic republicanism I discussed earlier. Destroy the middle class, crush Unions, siphon off the profits,....move on. Republicanism cannot thrive without a middle class to feed upon; which is why the middle class and incomes are contracting, and the repubs are expanding.
Greg, the auto industry's turn-around makes me smile every single day. I am so thrilled for you folks in Michigan. President Obama didn't get much support when he wanted to help you out. Why would anyone want to see the auto industry fail?
I was so disgusted as I think back to the media and their negative outlook. What happened to Americans anyway? What happened to working together, accepting challenges, working hard to turn things around?
Don't ever depend on the media to root for you. That's what I have learned. They live for negativity and failure it seems.
Thank you sooo much for the good wishes and the kind words Pat. We here in Detroit haven't heard many kind words cast in our direction lately.
I never could get why people were hating on this town so much. The domestic auto industry used to account for 1 of 6 jobs in the U.S. There are many misconceptions about Detroit, the auto industry and the Midwest in general, but I couldn't get over how many people were rooting for our failure. People have no idea how many lives that would have destroyed, and what that would have done to the United States.
Bless you for your kind and gentle heart. Sometimes it is so nice to hear that people haven't forgotten about you, and that there are Americans who do care. My company's Super Bowl commercial with Eminem brought that sentiment home again. A lot of people wrote in to tell us they were pulling for Detroit. Lot of people are still pulling for the Motor City, and they don't want to watch passively while this piece of America dies.
I do have a nod to Obama on my bumper. I had a bumper sticker made that says: "President Obama Saved My Job". I gave 5 more of them away at work.
The Democrats fail to capitalize on this simple, truthful messaging.
Greg, that ad had everybody talking here on First Read. It was a tremendous tremendous ad. We all talked about how our eyes teared up as we watched it.
I can't answer your question about why people wanted to see Detroit go under. It would have been just horrible. As you said, this was about people's livelihoods for goodness sakes.
I am a fan of all 50 states. Every single state in this union has offered something unique to the growth of our Nation. Our culture here in MA is different from the cultures in other parts of the country. But this is precisely what makes this country great. It's a pity more people don't appreciate the differences. I am just someone who loves diversity in all things whether it be language, color of skin, the way we dress, the music we like, etc.
Detroit. Cleveland. These are the two cities I will forever root for. The city and its people. Two cities I have never visited. But know have had some very difficult years.
Besides, Ty Cobb played in Detroit. And Bob Feller in Cleveland. What's not to like?! LoL.
Today, Before Taking a 2-Week Vacation House Republicans Voted to “Defund Health Care & Planned Parenthood” & The Senate Promptly Defeated the Bill
Before taking off for their two-week holiday recess, House Republicans have passed resolutions to defund the Affordable Care Act (240-185) and Planned Parenthood (240-184).
And now it's on to the Senate where both resolutions will be defeated later today.
Meanwhile, 100 days have passed and Republicans still haven't done anything about job creation.
Update: And the House resolution to defund ACA is defeated in the Senate on a vote of 47-53.
Update II: And just as quickly, the House resolution to defund Planned Parenthood fails, 42-58.
Both measures needed 60 votes to pass.
100 days of GOP rule. Still no jobs bills.
Remember President Obama Promised them they could have the Vote knowing apparently that it would fail just like all the other antics, and games they have been playing for the last 100 days.
Mr. President & Dems the fact that Speaker Boehner couldn’t get his own bill passed due to Defection by the “Tea Party” tells you and the Dems not to Compromise on anything.
It’s time to conduct business in the proper manner. Review the budget areas and determine those that need to be strengthen or eliminated, this process must not be driven by numbers, period.
Time to be the grown ups in the room.
Republicans are over a barrel because they can’t control the Tea party and it appears Eric Cantor is driving the Tea Party to Dump Boehner since they now say they will get a challenger for him in 2012
Mr. President & Dems, Hold the Line, Boehner needs you, only make deals that are in the best interest of the American People and they certainly won’t be giving the Rich one more cent in Tax Cuts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All these Republicans are costing Taxpayers Money. Rather than do a meaningful Bill today such as JOBS, Rrepublicans once again determined come Hell or High Water they would Pass the Same Bills Dropped from the Budget Bill Knowing that they would fail in the Senate.
Now this is all about Gamesmanship, Politics, Greed, Power, and unfortunately the American People are a distant memory, actually not a memory at all. Don't forget driven by Corporations, Wallstreet, and their lackeys, excuse me their Lobbyists.
Greg in Detroit, seems to be the adult in the room. Nice going, Greg.
Thanks "Almost Heaven", and more of the same to ya'.
Wow, no kidding Greg...way to go man. You have spent alot of time on this article tonight.
Really nice to have you share your experiences with us AND holding the haters at bay!
I believe our Prez saved my job as well. Not as profoundly as he influenced the fate of Detroit but he put things in place that probably saved my bacon. As well, the small company my husband owns was quiet for 2009 and 2010, since January he's humming along very nicely.
I was happy to scape off my Obama 2008 bumper sticker the other day (that glue is k*ller) only to replace it with my Obama/Biden 2012 sticker. All new and shiny...just like my eagerness to start working on the re-election.
Obama/Biden 2012 - yes we can, again!
I can see you in a Hemi Charger Spanks. Get you a discount if you want.... :o)
Thank you for your tautly-written essay June!! Sorry you got stuck with Rick Scott. A power struggle within the repub party? Just before the election? Maybe Boehner will switch parties.
Naaaah!
Now that the Supreme Court has ruled that corporation are like individuals, can we start putting corporate CEO's in prison for fraudulent acts of their companies? Makes sense to me. Either your a person or your not!!
the pres stood strong and should have riped ryan's proposal in half and through it in the waste basket. let's vote ryan out in 2012 and all of his buddies. keep your hands off my social security and medicare. and, mr ryan how can you justify watching children die to balance a budget?
