No deal as showdown reaches 11th hour

After a Thursday night meeting with House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, President Obama announced there is still no agreement on a plan to fund the government through the rest of this fiscal year but held out the possibility of a deal by early Friday morning.

Following White House meetings on Wednesday night and again on Thursday afternoon, Reid and Boehner appeared together to speak about the negotiations.  But neither spoke after the latest meeting, instead opting to issue a joint statement reading:  "We have narrowed the issues, however, we have not yet reached an agreement. We will continue to work through the night to attempt to resolve our remaining differences.”

Obama echoed that sentiment, saying, "We made some additional progress this evening."  But he noted the late hour of the negotiations and attempted to put a timetable on the matter.  "My hope is I’ll be able to announce to the American people sometime relatively early in the day that a shutdown has been averted," Obama said.

The government would begin to shut down non-essential services beginning at midnight on Friday if congress fails to pass some spending measure.

And my hope is that we're not about to be sold down the river. I dare the Republicans to shut down the government over funding Planned Parenthood and the EPA.

Now the ideological idiocy comes clearly into view.

WHERE ARE THE JOBS YOU PROMISED US, Speaker Boehner?

Speaker Boehner never promised anyone a job. the tea party was elected to repeal Obamacare, and to cut the crazy spending. cut it to the bone, then cut out some bone too.

The dems were the ones making all the promises 2 years ago. Why didn't they pass a budget last Oct.? They had the majority then and could have done what they wanted, which is spend our country into destruction. The government owes us no handouts. We can't afford to have it run everything. Let's start doing some things for ourselves!

Independants did not vote to follow a Tea Party agenda. The Republicans promised jobs, jobs, jobs... yet not one jobs bill has come from the House. Not one. All they're proposing is slashing jobs and trying to force thier morals down America's throats.

Hey everyone WE ( Dems) had control of the HOUSE and the SEN. since 2006, the guy I voted for in 2008 said he had I believe hundreds of thousands "SHOVEL READY JOBS"I'm A UNION CONSTRUCTION GUY FROM CHICAGO WITH A NEW SHOVEL. Where is my big construction job? Oh , I remember Obama said turns out there really isn't that many shovel ready jobs. Yes I'm a little bitter I feel lied to many many times. So let's not throw ALL the blame on Boehner we have not deliverd either.

The Republicans did promise Jobs. That's why I’m glad there is so much video proving that point and settling that argument. So, please stop that lying.

For the Tea baggers or Teatards, their rallies show how mixed up they are. Many times you hear, “shut it down.”

You know, its a shame that I get a vacation when the weather is still bad...I would like to believe this will only last for a week, but then again we can't even agree to disagree so why get my hopes up?

If it stays shut down longer then so be it; this is our governments opportunity to get this right without feeling pressured by deadlines (sarcastically giggling!)

Oh well, at least I can get some school work done during the day instead of staying up till midnight! (BONUS!!)

Want your grandparents to get their social security and medicare? Students to go to school? Want your soldiers to get paid? Want your ports to be secure? Airports to have air traffic controllers? You need to accept dirty water, dirty air, no birth control, no healthcare for poor women and then give up 10% more of your paycheck to the rich. If you are not willing to do that then you are responsible fo shutting down the government. So sais the party of NO!

Ana,

Apparently you havn't been paying attention. During a government shutdown, all of that will continue as before. No problem. You may have to wait to visit a National park though.

This is typical fear mongering. It just doesn't wash.

BS Ed, all federal workers will be forced to have furlough days, thats means no pay. All the I, me, mine politicians voted to keep their pay during a shut down. So who's really looking out for the citizens the politicians, yeah right. This is about nothing more than party line politics with disregard to the citizens of this country. It has nothing to do with trying to make things right. So really all things government will be delayed!

Ah, so the riders to the budget bill, including a prohibition against calling toxic coal ash "toxic waste" and enforcing that health insurers have to spend a minimum percentage of PREMIUMS on actually PAYING INSURANCE CLAIMS is "wasteful spending" that needs to be cut and for this our soldiers will miss a paycheck?

    I can answer that question:

Any democrat who listens to Obama telling him or her that this shutdown is a great idea is not just dumb, but willfully ignorant. Did he not tell them that the sheer force of his personality would save the democratic majorities even if they passed HCR, which was vehemently opposed by the electorate?

So now they are withholding service members' paychecks, in an effort to garner public support, and they believe Obama when he tells them it will redound to their credit?

I have said it before, and will say it again: if Obama told his supporters they could fly, they'd all jump off their roofs.

It's not only a budget problem, but instead more like a revenue problem. We need to raise the taxes where they need to be raised, and stop giving corporate welfare. The Clinton era tax rates would work just fine. Also, the Republicans- Tea Baggers need to quit playing these games with people's lives.

If history has taught anything when you raise taxes people spend less because they have less. The rich then have their high paid accountants figure out ways to get around taxes. So it almost results in LESS revenue for the Gov. Not only has it happened here it has happened all over the world. I'm sure you knew this already

        #7.6 - Fri Apr 8, 2011 9:34 AM EDT

        Job1, and time4truth,

If history has taught us anything, it would be that sending more money to Washington is just like giving more dope to a bunch of addicts.

Who really believes that if more money is sent to the IRS, that it will dutifully be used to pay down the National debt?? In your dreams maybe. No, that is why it so essential to cut the spending. We are also running out of time. Some spending cuts will affect everyone. Some will only affect a select group. No matter, it must be done and done now. This was the main agenda of the newly elected congressmen and women. They have their marching orders, and are not about to let Obama, or Reid, or even Boehner stand in their way.

He is arrogant, with his nose in the air, and he believes he can play hardball with the American public. This shutdown is the result of spending and handouts that have been going on for the last few decades by all politicians. How about he makes a CHANGE and stops the spending? Let's cut more jobs, have even less revenues, make more cuts, have still less revenues...etc. At what point did "Jobs" become "No Jobs" in trying to get economic recovery?

The way it is done on the state level is by reducing allocation. "Here is all you get, spend it wisely".

Then it is up to the given departments to do the best they can within their budget. If that mandates layoffs, so be it.

In my 71 years of life, 11 Presidents have held office. Only one has produced a budget that resulted in a surplus. I will bet that at least 30% of the electorate cannot name this President. All of the rest have presided over deficit spending. The first of my life, FDR, had a reasonable reason. WWII was raging, and we needed the money. The dollars spent then, when compared to the worth of those dollars in the time period that each president presided in, will show that four Presidents added more to the deficit during their terms in office than the others. From least to most, It was LBJ, Bush (George W), Obama, then Reagan.

LBJ put in Food stamps, Medicaire to add to the deficit. Bush lowered revenue, started two wars, (one unnecessarially in my opinion) and allowed no-bid contracts to proliferate. Obama inherited his mistakes, and a deep recession. Reagan lowered taxes, decreasing revenue.

Bill Clinton raised taxes with a REPUBLICAN Congress, and got a surplus. The same Congress shut down the Government and later paid the heavy price for doing so.

Today, Republicans are going to try it again. Proves one old adage. A fool is one who looks at past failures, tries the same tactics, and expects a different result.

I have found that people who use terms like "liberal" and "Right-Wing zealots" are biased in their thoughts, therefore incapable of open-mind rhetoric. They use these terms as if they were epithets or curse words.

Richard Nixon was a great President (his criminal offenses nonwithstanding). He was a moderate. LBJ knew where all the scandals were in Congresspersons lives, and he used blackmail to get his things done. (By the way, if he were President today, there wouldn't be a problem. The top tax rate would be 40 %, and Corporations would pay taxes like we do)

But, I digress. Compromise is not a dirty word. Eaxh side should give 50 %. No more.

Wasn't it Ronald Reagan who outspent the Soviets on defense?? Wasn't it Ronald Reagan who bluffed the Soviet Premier with our deploying starwars hardware that didn't even exist yet (and still doesn't)??

In short, wasn't it Ronald Reagan who finally put an end to that horrible cold war that we grew up with, who called the Soviet Union what they really were....That Evil Empire", and fostered the collapse of the communists in Europe, and the dismantling of the Berlin wall?? That was worth all the deficit spending that he did and more. The defense savings have more than offset what he spent back then.

That was a real leader. Can you see Obama telling anyone to "tear down this wall"?? LOL

Edward. Russia still has Nuclear weapons. The Soviets didn't attempt to keep up with us, Gorby wasn't willing to waste the money. Communism is an economic system which is always destined to fail, remember?

When the Russians decide that life is not worth living, they can destroy the world for themselves and us. Who then is the winner?

                      But Paul,

The Soviet Union no longer exists. And before Gorbachev, the Soviet Union did try to keep up with us for decades. Their people were always going without because every ruble went to the Military. Crazy arms race. We develop a missle firing submarine, they have to develop a missile firing submarine. we develop a new fighter plane, they come out with an even better fighter plane. we develop attack helicopters, they come out with their version of the attack helicopter. And so on...and so on. For decades.

Reagan raised and called and Gorby folded. Once he folded, the whole house of cards collapsed.

They weren't playing poker. You ignore the fact that Raygun didn't disarm the Soviets or the Russians, they still can kill themselves and us. Raygun set this country on a course to bankruptcy; Gorby gave up on a race that wasn't possible for anyone to win, and his homeland is no worse for it.

                          #12.4 - Tue Apr 12, 2011 9:14 AM EDT

No Paul, it wasn't poker. It was called the Cold War. Went on and on since the end of WWII. President Reagan didn't disarm the Soviet Union, what President Reagan did was raise the stakes. The Soviet Union could not keep up with our defense spending and still maintain their "Empire". To top it off, President Reagan threatened to deploy our shiny new "star wars" anti-missile shield immediately. (Which didn't even exist)

This is called a bluff, and it worked wonderfully. Thank you President Reagan.

Premier Gorbachev saw the futility in trying to keep on the Soviet Union's present course, and he finally called it quits. Once Freedom reared it's head, there was no holding it back.

Now, I'm not crediting President Reagan with singlehandedly ending the cold war. We all know the Soviet system had some dire weaknesses, but the actions of President Reagan were very instrumental in bringing the Soviet Union and the cold war to an end. The money we saved from that development far, far outweighs the increase in defense spending during President Reagan's terms in office. This savings was referred to, at the time, as the "peace initiative"

Remember any of this Paul??? This is our history.

Ed...........the Cold War was an economic scam on the taxpayer. We spent billions of dollars on a "STAR WARS" weapon system which you admit didn't and doesn't exist. Communism was always going to fail, remember? Gorby knew he could kill the world whether we had Star Wars or not........no point in trying to match it or defeat it. Your bluff and poker metaphor is inaccurate.

By the way............the savings from the "end" of the cold war was called the "Peace Dividend". Try to get history right, instead of writing your revisionist version of it.

We need to demand that members of Congress, especially clowns like Cantor and Ryan, pay their own health care. If as they say, we are broke, they make 174,000 dollars a year, they should be able to do that. Bet you or I could. This would help us reduce the Federal budget, not only now but after they leave the government, they get to keep their health care and we still get to pay for it. I agree that we need to cut spending, but don't touch medicare until you pay for your own health care, retirement , drop the 5% match of your 401k, give up the 230.00 per month we pay for their parking fees, and hell yes, give up the bottled water we pay for. Start with "the man in the mirror". Bachman could also give up her farm subsidies, 250,000.00 she has received in the last 5 years. We have to reform Congress before we let them try and reform us.

                                Sorry Lucky,

There isn't time for theatrics like that. We need to cut hundreds of billions of dollars now and every year hereafter for the forseeable future. Maybe we need a non-partisan spending czar who is untouchable and who can dictate what gets cut and by how much. His decisions to be final and irreversable. That would take all the politics out of it.

If all the pay and benefits of all of congress and the president were taken away, it wouldn't matter at all. Not even a blip on the radar screen, sorry.

Never fails to amaze me. The problem is in trillions of dollars. And some folks talk about pennies like it really matters.
