House passes one-week spending bill; Obama says he will veto

From NBC's Luke Russert
The House just passed a temporary one-week spending bill that would fund the government for another week, fund the Pentagon through the rest of fiscal year 2011, and cut $12 billion in spending.

The vote was 247-181.

The White House has threatened to veto this bill if it comes to the president's desk, and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid called it “a nonstarter” this morning.

Discuss this post

Again, Mr President...

If this bill ever reaches your desk, a veto will result in a shut-down of the federal government.

Is that what you really want?

Collapse away, my friends.

AM: What some of us don't really want is for republicans to keep getting away with their childish "our way or the highway" behavior.

Childish behavior? Is it childish behavior to attempt to rein in the currently uncontrollable spending of the federal government? Certainly the Democrats have shown no interest in doing so. You do realize Obama is going to the mat to prevent the cutting of $12 billion in government spending, this while his administration spent $233 billion in deficit spending in February alone. How crazy is that?

No, the real children are the Liberals. The ones that say "It's our money, we're spending it, and don't you dare try to stop us!!" You want names? Sure, try Obama, Reid, Schumer, Pelosi, Hoyer, and Durbin for starters. All of them, children.

No. But there's more than one way to do it, and insisting on doing it only one way is what's childish.

JoAnna: Is it childish behavior to attempt to rein in the currently uncontrollable spending of the federal government?

If it's about spending, then limit it to spending and get rid of all the riders.

          #1.23 - Thu Apr 7, 2011 4:16 PM EDT

This whole thing is ridiculous. First of all, I maintain that riders should not exist and should be outlawed. If your project/idea/expenditure/reduction or whatever, cannot stand the light of day and command a vote of it's own, then it is unworthy to exist.

Secondly, it is the JOB of congress to set the budget and spending, I realize there will be ideologies and such that will differ, but the main job is to run the country. There are now somewhere close to a million people that go to work everyday, doing jobs they believe are beneficial that currently have zero clue if they are going to go to work monday, or at all next week. Further, they don't know if they will get paid for the enforced furlough. Don't know about you, but my expenditures are based on my revenue... and I, poor federal worker that I am, pretty much live pay check to pay check(no it isn't smart but... there it is) like everyone else. Regardless of my wise financial planning, the plain and simple fact is that more than 2 or 3 days off without pay will put me in financial hardship. 2 weeks is simply untenable...

And frankly, Obama did his job, he put together a budget plan, with deficit reductions in place, and handed it to congress. He is NOT their mediator, they should be able to take his blueprint and modify it to suit their ideology, and NEGOTIATE to a conclusion.

The GOP refusal to accept what they asked for (you want this, ok, wait you want more, well, ok, wait you want still more? ) deserves a great big round of screw you. Democrats were realistic (Obama included) to know they were going to have to cut... so they did, but the tea baggers weren't happy, so, okay, we will cut some more, and still more... and still... and finally they have said, enough... quit already.

What they need to do is say, OK, look, shuttering the government is stupid.... it is like two parents fighting over what to have for dinner, then going to bed hungry forgetting the kiddies have to eat... so lets just put in place a spending plan... no riders, no hacking at things with an axe, and then start really working on a long term budget that everyone can live with... and doing some REAL research and find out where we can do some intelligent cost cutting and controls.

in the meantime, lets create some FREAKING JOBS and INDUSTRY and get our people back to work, growing our economy, collecting more taxes and doing more for deficit reduction than dinking around with 12% of the budget ever will...

            #1.24 - Thu Apr 7, 2011 4:18 PM EDT

What is childish is not recognizing the problem and dealing with it.

Childish is threatening military families with withholding their paychecks because you think it is a political winner.

Childish is insisting that it is pointless to cut some spending because there is so much already, so what is the point of cutting back.

Childish is ignoring the consequences of your spending habit.

            Know who is grown up?

The people who control access to the bond market. They cut off Greece, are just about to cut off Portugal, were ready to cut off Spain, ( credit to the Spaniards- they understood how serious their predicament was, and did something about it, so I guess they are grown up, too), and are ready to cut us off.

So, maybe, Obama and the democrats better grow up, too. Quickly.

The House is only one party of the necessary approval process. What they do does not matter unless the Senate agrees The Senate should promptly Vote Against this bill. Do the job now, no more mini spending bills attempting to make it look like the Dems simply aren't corporating while pushing Abortion, NPA Defunding, EPA Defunding in the background.

This playing Chicken has to stop. Once again Wisconsin showed the Dems how to get the job done, time for the COngressional Democrats to follow suit.

                      Veto the bill.

I am a small business owner - My company does 90% if it's business on Federal Government Contract. Waiting 30 to 45 days for government payment on completed work already strains my pay roll and supplier credit accounts. A government shutdown will quickly put me out of business and my employees out of work.

The people I helped vote into office (Republicans) are now kicking me when I'm down.

You are not alone in your anxiety, however it seems there are many voters who continously put Republicans in power only to have them abuse it and forget about the people who voted them in. This goes back to Nixon and Watergate.

Seniors routinely vote for Republicans and when Congressmna Ryan starts talking about eliminating Medicare as we know it for the next generation not a peep out of the current crop of recipients because they don't care that there children and grandchildren will be left to fend for themselves.

So you like to quote the bible, huh? Well, maybe you should back that up with a proposal that will balance the federal government budget and pay down our $14t debt. I hope you realize that just posting some 15 word BS statement does not provide you with any credibility!

Lets see if your intelligence will allow you to post ANY statement that does not include raising taxes on the rich and corporations?

                            Just Asking..

Good for you, Mr. President. Stop the pandering to these idiots. You and the Democrats have bent over backwards to try and stop this. But the neocons don't get it. The teapartiers want a shutdown? Well, here you go.

I delight in being the one to tell you that you are full of BS! You and your beloved progressives and demos had all of last year to pass their stupid budget, when your beloved progressives had control of all three houses, and didn't. And now, you have the gall to saying that the people are being pandered to. Wow, you have to quit smoking whatever it is that you are smoking. Did you sleep through the elections last November? Apparently so!

The progressives have only bent over when they asked George Soros what they should do.

Tea party fan- (nice name - says it all)

First of all, did you know that the Democrats tried to get spending cuts through and were filibustered to death by these idiots? And what are you talking about three houses? Do you have any clue as to what you're talking about? Your beloved crybaby Speaker came in with $32 billion in cuts, the democrats said OK, we'll even take it to $33 billion. But you crazy teapartiers wanted none of it. And you have Boehner by the throat. Now your guys want to push thru a "stop gap" bill for a week with only $12 billion? What happens in 7 days? No, I wasn't asleep, but apparently you were, what with keeping up with the news of the three houses and all.

                                Enough said.....

                                DEE, DEE, DEE...

Please tell me when and where the dems tried to get spending cuts through in 2010? Please provide a link where I can look. Also, when did Boner come with a $32b in cuts? As I remember, the requested cuts (at the beginning) were $61b prorated to $100b for the year. The dems replied with a $33b cut for the entire year with no riders and the stupid cuts were to be applied against Obama's 2012 budget after a 24% increase was already genned in.

I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid and I most certainly keep up with the news, apparently much closer than you!!!!!!!!!

                                Wow! - Try again....

I'm not going to do your homework for you. Everybody knows what the truth is....except you. Everybody knows Boehner came in with a $32 billion dollar deal, but the teapartiers said no way...$61 billion or nothing. You know that, right? You know they have him hogtied, don't you? You know the main reason this isn't getting done is because you guys want to keep the defunding of the EPA and Planned Parenthood in there, don't you?

By the way, you said you were stupid, not me.

                                Enough said...

No dice - Yeah you're right about the amount, but was that in 2010? Don't think so and besides, they were trying to get the cuts to be from Obama's 2012 budget which was already bloated above the 2011 budget by 24%. And you have the gall to be indignant that the House Freshmans nixed the deal. It was all smoke and mirrors!

We sent those people to DC to cut the stupid excessive spending and reign in the out-of-control bloating of the federal government. So far, they have not been successful and as far as I'm concerned, many of them will be one-term wonders if they do not get off their butts and do some significant cutting, both of money and the size of government!

Is not that the GOP/RNC does not like you Mr. President. Instead, it is what the GOP/RNC like too say and do politically to you Mr. President. The "Nazis News Network" AKA. Fox News. Has been very aggressive in their political misinformation, and stirring-up social/racial hatred towards our President. The Progressives in Wisconsin, and around the nation have, poltically, socially, and economically come alive. Have you smelled the rotten political tea bags yet Mr. President???

Everyone needs to actually investigate and read what the Tea Party-Republican Party is proposing. Their budget gives all the benefits to the top 2% weathiest corporations and individuals and we the middle class, poor, and seniors get tax increases, Medicare cuts, and decreased health care coverage. While the top 2% wealthiest do not pay taxes, we the average American will get a tax increase. Look it up on Fact Check.com and do the research. Don't be afraid of the truth. All you Tea Party right-wing conservatives are on the wrong side of this and hopefully you will wake up and realize that everything you are opposing are the very things that you need to survive. Don't follow blindly the lies that you are being fed; the only purpose being to destroy the President with no regard for the damage that they do to us and the country. Do it, go to Factcheck.com and learn the truth !!!
