George Allen steps on the issue of race

After his failed 2006 campaign for re-election, it would be an understatement to say that former Sen. George Allen (R) has a perception problem on the issue of race.

And now Allen -- who's back running for his old Senate seat -- has once again stepped on the issue of race.

Craig Melvin, an African-American reporter-anchor for NBC's Washington, DC affiliate, posted this message on Twitter:

For the 2nd time in 5 months, fmr. gov. and sen candidate George Allen asks me,”what position did you play?” I did not a play a sport.”

Allen later apologized:

sorry if I offended, ask people a lot if they played sports Grew up in football family found sports banter good way to connect

*** UPDATE *** Allen adviser Dan Allen (no relation) sends along this Tweet from a local NBC Richmond affiliate anchor:

@ryanobles I think it's worth pointing out that @GeorgeAllenva often asks me what position I played in sports as well.

Steve, the journalists haven't commented on the daily collapsing of the liberals posts, why would they comment on yours? I'm sorry, I don't approve of the collapsing of posts, but really, man, Feisty and US Navy were actually deleted today. And Feisty wasn't even being that "feisty!"

Beyond ridiculous to raise this personal chatter as a "race" issue.

A colleague asked me this morning did I play any sports; did that mean he mistook me for African American?

MSNBC is biased against the GOP, here is a perfect example.

I agree - this "story" is nothing of the sort. You're just as likely to argue the man is biased towards people who played football. FR, this is the second example of poor journalism I have seen today. What is going on over there? Do you even have an editor??

Police this junk up or keep losing readers.

Suddenly, asking if someone played sports is a racist question? Really?

How about "pass the salt"? "is it raining"? Or "do you have the time"? Are these, now, racist questions?

Forget professional- you guys are bend ridiculous.

Why not just get tee shirts that say "team Obama", or "democrat forever" imprinted. You are, really, THAT obvious.

I'm a Virginian, and I know Allen is racist, nothing new here.

Well, I'm a Washingtonian, and I DON'T know whether Allen is racist.

More to the point, I don't see how this "news" article moves the pendulum of doubt or suspicion one way or the other, which was the point of my original post. This article is just dribble, based on nothing more than speculation. Poor journalism, FR. Very, very poor.

Sharon____— I am a Vriginian too, and I can tell the difference in routine social banter and what you obviously see as deep-seeded rascism in any Republican who tries to talk with anyone. If you are sooo PERSONALLY knowledgeable of Mr Allen's rascism, then let's hear what your first-hand evidence you have to post here! This is such an absurdity in journalistic crap that I cannot believe that it was even given public comment!

I'm a Liberal...not a Republican..even so, I would say that we should not get all upset every time someone says something that can be misconstrued, unless we are 100% sure of it was ment in a negative manner. I think we are all way too sensitive and we should get back to the issues that are facing us and focus our attentions on them. If someone is racist, then it will prove itself in more that one way.
