If there's a government shutdown, the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finds that there will be enough blame to go around.
A plurality of 37 percent say they would blame congressional Republicans if the current budget disagreement leads to a shutdown of the federal government, while 20 percent say they would blame President Obama and another 20 percent would blame congressional Democrats.
Seventeen percent say they would blame everyone, and another 2 percent say they would blame both Obama and congressional Democrats.
The full NBC/WSJ poll -- which was conducted March 31 to April 4, 2011, and which has a margin of error of plus-minus 3.1 percentage points -- will be released at 6:30 pm ET.

jeff - that's because 20 + 20 = 40.....40% are blaming democrats (congressional democrats and the democrat president).
and 37 will blame the Congressional republicans. The GOP is not going to be very popular either.

The Teapublicans are holding America hostage to the detriment of the poor and middle-class. Ask them to explain why corporations (GE is just one recent example) pay no taxes or little taxes in some cases, and the burden falls on those who already have little. The Teapublicans are front for the mega-wealthy and the rest of us are paying most of the bills. It's the ratio of wealth to fair-share in taxes that is the problem in this country. The extreme wealthy have special tax laws that are not generally known to the public, that exempt them from paying their fair share. Many Americans are bamboozled into believing that it is the poor and the middle-class, entitlements, etc. that are the problem. It's the extremely wealthy and the corporations that are destroying this country.
Right on the public listen to to much Fox news and other right so called news and believe it.
The Robber Baron Teapublicans might have more of a case if they hadn't insisted on tax cuts for milllionaires and billionaires while sounding their mantra of "Oh' we have to cut the budget on the backs of the miidle class and the poor." Their main concern is how they can get more billions transfered to the rich without the middle class and the poor noticing. Coupled with the Union busting and the plan to issue vouchers to seniors to give to insurance compnies instead of Medicare....WOW! Well........ We're noticing and the teapublicans are goin' down.
the pres is on live talking about alternative energy - more empty words from the empty suit.
Rob, Nothing new he always goes off on the alternative energy issue when bigger issues are at hand.
Obama does seem to have an attention deficit disorder, doesn't he? I guess having dinner with the Reverend Al Sharpton at NAN tonite is more important.
So many stupid and dumb comments - I'm outta here! Can't believe you people actually exist!
The weeper of the house is to blame! This is his job.
I blame these scorched-earth, me-myself-and-I, loud-mouths like Pence and his ilk. Their interests are no broader than what affects them and their cronies.
I'm beginning to suspect that not only do they want government shut-down but they want reversal of economic recovery.
I'm sure that there are reasonable, responsible budget hawks in the ranks. But these Pence-type folks have past their useful purpose.
obama says the republicans are jeopardizing the economic recovery....i thought recovery summer was last summer.
I hope Kloppeburg does pull it out would ,much rather see upwards of 10,000 lay off notices go out to the Union workers let them now feel the pain that the DREADED Private sector workers have felt for 3 years or more- not to worry though your union and the democrats have you back
Do you enjoy kicking cats and pinching babies, too? Unions have helped all workers, even those who do not pay dues. Look at the history of labor and see how benevolent business is to workers who do not have the benefit of collective bargaining. If you only work 40 hours a week, get benefits, work in a safe environment, get vacations and breaks, thank a union member who suffered to get all workers decent conditions and wages. And,if 10,000 workers get laid off as is your published hope, how secure will your job be? Or are you independently wealthy and completely obdurate of the suffering of the middle class workers who make your life better, while only asking for fairness? Open your mind and your heart.
This might not make people happy, but the only people to blame is ourselves. We keep electing the same people over and over. We let the big money influence our voting without really looking into who is best for our beliefs. When you vote in 2012 think about this.
The party of No has had a long history of using the budget as their big stepping stone. This is not currecntly about Medciarie, Medciaid or Social Security. Those are, indeed, big issues, and worthy of long and serious conversations but have little to do with this budget. Mr. Tan Man is the most divisive speaker in a long time. The Republicans have had a long time to to discuss and react to the administrations budget but as usual have aited until the last seconds to either crap or get off the pot. This is going to be interesting to see how they try to spin this in 2012. And I am a Republican but am sick of all the childish games being played at my parties expense.
How can anyone blame the Republicans or the Tea Party is beyond reason. If the Democrats would have done their jobs last year, a shut down would not have been a issue today. It was the Democrat Majority that could not come to a 2011 Budget, not the Republicans or Tea Party. All Obama and the Democrats know is spend, spend. It is about time someone is standing up to the Spending Madness of the Democrats. It is just funny that the Democrats are the rich cats in government.
As for schummer, remember he said he was told to LIE and "Blame the Republicans and Tea Party." Just like Obama blaming Bush for the Mess that the Democrats got us into with Fannie & Freddie.
What’s funny is that you refuse to acknowledge that 20 % blame Dem’s in congress and 20% blame Obama plus another 2% who blame both of those groups. Making the total of those who blame Democrats 42%. That doesn't consider the 17% which would blame all groups and could easily lean toward blaming Dem's when or if the wind started blowing that direction.
If I were Obama I'd sign everything the GOP throws at him.... wait till 2012... and by that time the American Public will be in rebellion (if there is any middle class left)... and the GOP will be finished for good....
I want the responsible journalists to ask John Boener what exactly he means by "smoke and mirrors." A good journalist would ask him to give a concrete example. Furthermore, collapsing someone's request for more in depth reporting is infantile and does not reflect the values of our democracy.
Government is going to shut down and Obama goes on a speaking engagement. And the Liberals blame the Tea Party and Republicans for this mess. Next thing we will hear in the news is that Obama and Family are going on Vacation again.
Gee, let's see, who to blame. DEMOCRATS were supposed to pass this budget last year when they controlled both houses of Congress and the White House but didn't. The 111th Congress, controlled by DEMOCRATS (Harry and Pelosi) racked up more debt than the first 100 Congresses combined. Obama and the DEMOCRATS spent more money in Obama's first 2 years than any other President in history. I think it's obvious who deserves most of the blame.
Shut the government down. The Democrat party has bankrupted our nation and have no ability on their own to reign in spending. Maybe if we shut down the government and quit paying them they will leave and not come back. Fire or lay off all non essential government employees. If they are non essential we don't need them. We are going to balance the budget so get used to it. Our elected officals won't so we the people will. We are going to vote out all Democras and Republicans that don't listen to us. We can't wait for 2012 and you better believe me on that one.
Totally agree. The far right is going after the wrong things, basically stepping on the little guys. AGAIN! Go after the defense budget you mental midgets for brains. If the Republicans go after social security and medicare I will personally be out on the streets demanding every Republican be defeated. ENOUGH of this better than thou taking care of the upper crust B.S.
Republicans are the only ones protecting the middle class and the taxpayers.
Democrats want More government. More government means Higher taxes.
I know the answer to the poll question (as if YOU didn't know): Democrats will blame Republicans. Republicans will blame Democrats. Meanwhile, Charlie Sheen is WINNING.
20% Obama - pretty funny. 20% that have no clue how the government works.
If the Dems had played these games during Bush, The GOP would have called them traitors. The GOP played obstructionist games with record filibusters from the time the Dems got back the Senate, during a war and major recession. We are still at war. We are still in economic trouble. Why hasn't anyone called out the GOP?
Why does this have to be a budget war? There isn't enough money to go around. That means some won't get as much as they're used to. How hard is that?
It wasn't too long ago that the democrats got all over the Republicans for running deficits and that was all ok for the democrats to do, just ask them. Now the Republicans are trying to reduce the deficit and the democrats are saying that's bad. What's wrong with you people. Maybe we should haul the democrats from the past into the present and then everyone would agree we need to reduce the deficit and be done with it.
It's like these ignorant politicians think no one has a memory. Like we all are stupid or something. And then you all play along like they're right and you really don't have a memory and you really are stupid. Get your head out of their butts and use your brains and your memory if you have either.
What's the big deal? Democrats think it is better to shut down the Government than agree to $60 billion in budget cuts. Republicans think it is better to shut down the government than agree to continue to borrow and spend that everyone agrees will be disaster. Obama? He lays low.
I voted to cut spending. My guy hears those who sent him. We got a right to vote the way we want. Others do too. Shut it down and let's get used to essential government and build from there.
I blame the media.....
If the goverenment shuts down it's a good thing then they can stay away from us for a while & stop making so many new laws that we do not need. P:S: maybe they will stop sending welfare checks out and the lazy bums will get a MC job for min; wage and get tired so they will sleep instead of making more welfare babies.
if there is a mc job in our area let me know i have a few family members with college degrees that will take it for any pay...and they are not on welfare..my husband and i are help raising a family of 5.....including medicine for them.....we are state workers, middle income that pay taxes lots of it... ...if we get laid off then all of us will go on welfare..it's been coming out of our paychecks of 25 years service........ their unemployment is over....so don't just condemn and judge others......we are trying to take care of our own and looking for work ...there was a opening for a gas attendant 100 people applied.....life is not as you say....don't judge....the lord is not sleeping ...the rich will pay if not here ......later!
