WI Dems say they have the signatures to recall GOP state senator

From NBC's Mark Murray
Wisconsin Democrats are announcing that they are filing their petition today -- with enough valid signatures, they say -- to recall GOP state Sen. Dan Kapanke.

If enough signatures are found to be valid, Kapanke would become the first Wisconsin state legislator to face a recall election after Gov. Scott Walker's (R) move to curb state employees' collective-bargaining rights passed.

Democrats are targeting seven other GOP state senators who supported Walker's effort. Republicans, meanwhile, say they are trying to recall Democratic state senators who fled the state during the budget fight.

Once the signatures are filed (15,588 valid signatures are needed to trigger a recall against Kapanke), the state's Government Accountability Board has 31 days to review the petition. Once the board declares there are enough valid signatures, a recall election would occur on the sixth Tuesday (so six weeks) after sufficiency is determined.

If more than two candidates compete for the election, then that contest serves as the primary, and the general election will be held four weeks after that.

"Hey! Hey! Ho! Ho! Whacky Walker and the Party of No has got to go!!" "Progressive Power" will move Wisconsin and our nation forward. The "Gross Odd People" (GOP), and the "Really Not Competent" (RNC) are going to pay a hight price politically at the polls. The smelly Tea Beggers" are going to face the full power of the Progressives in 2012, and beyond. Since President Obama took office the cognitive and behavioral insanity of the GOP/RNC has been well documented. The mentally disturbed individuals of the GOP will be in for the political fight of their lives in 2011 and 2012. "Nutty Newt," "Bitchy Bachmann," "Barbarian Barbour," "Puppet palin," "Insane McCain," "Bonehead Boehner," "Crazy Cantor," and the rest of the GOP will feel the political power of the Progressives. The "Nazi News Network." AKA. Fox News. Will not deter "Progressive Power." For we stand for humanity, the Middle Class Worker, Civil Rights, Worker Rights, and the economic equality for all. "Progressive Power" will defend the elderly, the disabled, and the working poor. The disrespect and race hatred towards our President will not be accepted, and politically there will be political hell to pay. How dare the GOP/RNC try to destroy our President, our nation, our values, and our fellow citizens. Our President is intellectual, mentally stable, speaks clearly, cares for others, and listens well to the diffierent positions of others. The "Birthers" are truely evil in nature, and just behaviorally insane. Priogress Power will move our nation forward, and crush the forces of polical puke, economic evil, and social sadistic behaviors. President Obama is the most intellectual President since JFK, and it is very poiliticallly, socially, diplomatically, and Presidential in nature. On Wisconsin!!!

Progressive.... I concur, you said it.... POWER TO THE PEOPLE, BABY!!!! How dare these new republican governors come in to power under the disguise of caring for their voters. They did not tell the truth when they campaigned about their goal of destroying unions state wide. And they dared to push legislation under the cover that is so vicious and diabolical and think that no one will notice nor speak up. I say try to recall every last one of the coward republican legislators that did not speak up that sat back and allowed this egomaniac governor Walker and Kasick to try to rule like a king looking down to the peasant workers. Even the unions that were exempt from his bill are standing with the people of Wisconsin cause they saw thru the game played with him trying to pit them against one another....not!!! KEEP UP THE FIGHT WISCONSIN, OHIO AND ALL!!!

Yep....I think to start with they just figured that they would do as much destruction as they could possibly get away with without as much as a whimper from the left..But I believe this may be the spark that will get our side fired up and be sure to go out in record numbers to cast every much needed vote.

I agree. Conservatives didn't get where they are by only voting when things look good. They turn out reliably EVERY TIME. They also vote on EVERYTHING.

As an example 3 Iowa Supreme Court Justices lost their retention votes for a decision that the state law banning gay marriage was unconstitutional. There was a big campaign funded mostly with out of state money directed at taking their seats.

Obviously this has been painted as an enormous win for Conservatives and a sea change toward the Republican Party in Iowa. Not so fast. It turns out over 1/2 MILLION people cast a ballot in the race for Governor but none for OR against Supreme Court Justice retention. Most of that is a matter of "I don't vote for things like that because I don't know enough about them."

According to polling most of those folks who didn't cast a vote didn't have a problem with the gay marriage ruling, so if they had voted all 3 justices would have been retained easily. What at first blush looks like a big shift in the political leanings of Iowans in fact turns out to be a low-turnout election being manipulated by a special interest group.

Centrists and Liberals need to learn to do what Conservatives have been doing for the last 3 decades. Vote consistently, EVERY time the polling booths are open.

    Get more liberals to vote??

That is not your problem...so it won't help you.

Your REAL problem is all those MODERATE/INDEPENDENT voters who TURNED AGAINST you the last time!

You CANNOT mobilize enough liberals to OFFSET the aforementioned CLASS...if they DECIDE to vote AGAINST Democrats like they did this past November.

It really is THAT simple folks!

      #29.5 - Sun Apr 3, 2011 7:59 PM EDT

Incorrect, tax211. To the largest extent the 2010 election showed same pattern as ALL midterm elections. Midterms tend to have fewer young voters (currently the most Liberal demographic) and a higher proportion of Conservative voters. In other words, Conservatives ALWAYS turn out to vote, while other groups are not as reliable in that regard. If Centrists and Liberals would learn that lesson we'd have a much better record.

While Independents did show some movement toward Republicans in the last cycle it was overwhelmingly a protest vote on the economy. The Conservative devotion to enriching the wealthy, cutting the social safety net to shreds, and Cultural Conservative issues such as reproductive rights is rapidly eroding support for Republicans. Buyers remorse is everywhere you look.

The best part will be when Wimpy Walker has to face this guy face to face. What do you tell Kapanke when he is the third senator to ever get recalled in Wisconsin. What do you tell your grand kids, I broke the law and the law won. Or never follow a wimp into a fight.

Go ahead and recall the state senator...you only make him famous!  Every republican who voted to take away the collective bargaining rights is an absolute hero to the rest of the country and ought to run for public office again on the national level.  The way they stood together to do the right thing, the hard thing, was an example to be admired!  Heroes one and all!!!  The people of Wisconsin behind the GOP recall are not doing their state any favors.  Wisconsin's governor has already done more in his short time as governor than Obozo has in the last 6 years!

bolsen, I'm glad for you to speak for those of us in the rest of the country in identifying our "absolute heroes" for us. What's curiously absent though is your vitriol against the police & fire department unions, unless of course they aren't playing a role in bankrupting the state. What are your thoughts about the subsidies that went to farmers? The state isn't too broke to afford those. Let's see your conviction. Don't just talk about it be about it. Go ahead and bust the police and fire department unions if you really feel they are the cause of such financial mess.

I can see the loons are out tonight! Let's see how long the union benefits go on when the state's bankrupt. California is learning this one the hard way. I can't wait!!! Wisconsin has a lot of hard lessons to learn and it's about time to get started. When the house is burning, to throw fuel on is just fool hardy, but there's Wisconsin speeding toward their own demise. The unions think they are getting away with something...storm the capitol, hang out the windows, jump up and down on the balconies, being violent and lawless when they think they've outnumbered those not in unions, ruin the capitol grounds leaving trash everywhere...so immature.

bolsen....what have you been watching? there were no violence taking place during these protest at the WI capitol. Did you read any articles of arrest? And it was already reported of the so called millions of dollars damage to the state capitol was a lie. If I do believe the unions had already gave in to the monies that governor Walker was requesting, but he wanted more. The more was to destroy their collective bargaining for his political gain and his sidekick Fitzgerald said so on fox "news". The people of WI and the other states have every right to protest and try to recall every single repub that cowardly voted for this destruction of their union rights. The teachers, firefighters, police, and unioned working people are not responsible for this financial mess in their states. All these hatred being spewed their way is just wrong. Where is your outrage at the real perpertrators...wall street gambling with our money and corporations not paying their taxes? Beating up on the "working" people is not the answer and these repubs will learn that the hard way when they are hopefully recalled. POWER TO THE PEOPLE!!!

Todays Republicans are making the same mistake the Democrats made in the late 60s --- ignoring the working man and the middle class and pandering to the snobs. Scott Walker and similar Republican governors may turn out to be the best friends Democrats and organized labor have.

"Ya' know what? I'm thinkin' maybe this wasn't such a good idea after all. We should have destroyed Working Class America behind the scenes like we usually did. Now that we are out of the closet and on record,....we're exposed..."

You have to ask a few questions here. Firstoff the incumbent almost always wins recalls thatare not on scanadluos issues, because you have to move beyondpassions of themoment to ask:was this reasonalble conduct?

If this is made into an issue of collective bargaining the replacers lose: the incumbent gets to argue this cuts you r taxes..and he will cite chaper and verse large salaries granted overtheyears. And the koch's having tons onmoney to billbord this as a case example of what they are getting at.

Secondly, noone has yet explained why work rules are essential to be negitiated. One needs to move beyond costs and show the benefits..no just toteachers-but to the whole community. If yourun on costs it becmes a race to the bottom proposition.

Third..Watcht out for the"bad teaching". The incumbent will say this helps remove bad treachers-whatever they are. NO who wnats bad teahers? Right? So it's important to debate the qualityof education..not the senoirty of the teacher. "Our schools are good..our reading scores are high, and that's because we have teacher s of strong expereince"

I would have pick d a district where superior schools are almost self evident. It is easier to win those, because the Teachers are repected. It would be hard to win a district where saraies are out of line with the average persons. That creates a "class warefare" element. And it is one that is overwhemligly negative.

Were I the incumbentI might want to raise worker rules as "they say the need permission to go to the bathroom. Are these people teaching children or adluts" or "next the ywan tto pick the kind of toilet paper for the bathrooms".

I know..I'm having fun fantizising about how I'd approach is probelem of a recall election.

Were I the recallers I would say the governor lied

Arlin, if Republicans really want to debate attacking incomes and bargaining rights of average citizens in order to pay for a big tax cuts for corporations I suspect Democrats will be pleased to have that discussion.

The Conservative war on the middle class has accelerated dramatically and this is a perfect example.

The problem is that our society has forgotten some of the factors that are part of a healthy well educated child.

            1. proper nutrion

            2. stable living conditions (i. e. actually Having a room to sleep in at night)

            2. supporting and nurturing household

            3. proper role models in a child's immediate surroundings

            4. parent participation in schools

I challenge anyone to prove that the ONLY factor affecting a child's education is the teacher in the classroom.

The difference is that we can attack and demonize the teachers for not producing well education children but we just can't seem to point the finger at the parents and society today that SHARE a part of a child's upbringing.

In Wisconsin, the "Gross Odd People" (GOP), and the "Really Not Competent" (RNC) made a big political mistake. They underestimated "Progressive Power!" Now it is time for "Whacky Walker," and the rest of the GOP. Will politically pay for their, economic greed, social unfairness, and political back stabbing. The new Governor of Wisconsin, is no friend of the, elderly, disabled, unions, education, and the working poor. "Whacky Walker" just loves doing the economic dirty work of the Koch Brothers, large corporations, large insurance companies, and Wall Street Bankers. "Progressive Power" means defeating the "Super Spewers" of the GOP/RNC. These "Political Pukes" are as follows. "Trampy Trump," "Bitchy Bachmann," "Nutty Newt," "Puppet Palin," "Barbarian Barbour," "Bonehead Boehner," "Crazy Cantor," and the Tea Baggers of Barf. "Progressive Power" is well aware of the continuing misinformation spewed by the "Nazi News Network." AKA. Fox News. "Progressive Power" in listening to the rascist rants of "Lunatic Limbaugh" the "Moron with a Mic. Now "Progressive Power" is getting into full political, social, and economic gear. It is time for the Progressive Movement of roll forward into 2012. "Progressive Power" has had enough of the "Bonehead Birthers," and the " Party of Sour Tea." On Wisconsin!!

In the end citing redistribution in a society that collectively holds some resources, goals, and needs above those of the individual is a dicey thing.

Technically any form of public education redistributes disproportionately from those who do not have children, or who do not attend a public school.

The same goes for those who do not drive, those who do not visit or use public libraries, public parks etc ad naseum.

In the end we all choose to be part of society and consequently to support the basic infrastructures that make up a modern society today.  Now, we COULD go back in history and do away with quite a few things that we take for granted today.

            Fire protection

            Police

            Sanitation

            military protection

            Running water

            Sewage removal

            education

            healthcare

            environmental protection

            water quality

            air quality

            disease prevention

            court system and legal system

But, you know, when its all said and done there exist countries on this earth that have NONE or few of these social benefits.

Funny ..... we call them 3rd world countries.... not bastions of capitalism or democracy.

The "Gross Odd People" (GOP), and the "Really Not Competent (RNC) are well organized. The GOP/RNC in Wisconsin, kept on message, and had alot of supporters with deep pockets. They made it very clear that Union Busting, and the destruction of Public Education at all levels will occur. "Whacky Walker" during his campaign made these points very clear. He also made it clear, that huge tax breaks will make large corporations richer.

              Sorry tax211, but when even Foxmussen can't doctor the polls enough to make a Republican look good there's trouble;

A new Rasmussen poll shows Walker’s approval rating is quickly shrinking and that Republicans may also be turning off young marrieds who have kids in schools. Not a good sign for Walker, the Wisconsin GOP or the branding of the GOP nationally. The poll lends credence to the likelihood that Republicans could be in the beginning of a process where the party is turning off independent voters, mobilizing and unifying the Democratic party base and further alienating the smaller number of more moderate Republicans in Wisconsin and elsewhere:

That's right DS, Conservatives see the rest of us as THE ENEMY. If they didn't believe it their rhetoric wouldn't be so over the top, their demonization wouldn't be so relentless. Their mission isn't just to participate in the process it's to RUN the process. It's to exclude all others from the process. This authoritarian, unamerican force must be resisted until Conservative crazies can fail sufficiently to be replaced by more reasonable Conservatives in the Goldwater or Buckley mold.
