“Contrary to what you may have read elsewhere, national polls of primary voters — even this far out from the Iowa caucuses and New Hampshire primary — do have a reasonable amount of predictive power in informing us as to the identity of the eventual nominee,” the New York Times’ Silver writes on his FiveThirtyEight blog.
Right in time for April Fool’s Day, the NRSC launches President Obama’s “first ad” of the 2012 cycle, complete with hopeful themes and music (and a heaping spoonful of snark.)
“The conservative Daily Caller news site and two conservative nonprofit organizations will hold a Republican presidential primary debate this summer during the Conservative Leadership Conference in Las Vegas,” The Hill writes. “Daily Caller founder and Editor-in-Chief Tucker Carlson will moderate the July 10 debate, according to a press statement. Americans for Tax Reform and the Citizen Outreach Foundation will co-host.”
BACHMANN: Time writes about the rise of the “electric” Michele Bachmann from anonymous congresswoman to a GOP headliner, while also noting the challenges she might face as she continues laying the groundwork for a potential presidential bid: “She has burned through four chiefs of staff in five years, often preferring her own counsel or that of her close-knit family. She writes her own speeches and relies heavily on her husband and her oldest son, a Connecticut doctor, for advice. Such an arrangement usually makes for a rocky crusade. Ron Carey, a former Minnesota party chair who quit as her chief of staff last summer, says he will not support Bachmann despite their long friendship. ‘I agree with Michele Bachmann 99% of the time on policy issues,’ he says. ‘But just like Dorothy, I've been to Oz and I've looked behind the curtain.’”
CHRISTIE: Bruce Springsteen wrote a letter to the editor in the Asbury Park Press criticizing New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie for his budget cuts. "Your article shows that the cuts are eating away at the lower edges of the middle class, not just those already classified as in poverty," The Boss wrote. That’s got to sting for Christie. Remember this? The New York Times reported in 2009: Christie “has attended 120 Springsteen concerts, in places as far away as Paris and London, and once ducked out of a Trenton fund-raiser — ‘Gotta go, another event!’ he said — and raced to Philadelphia, arriving at the Spectrum just as the band was cranking up ‘Badlands.’” (More than 120? Seriously?)
A new poll from Fairleigh Dickinson University shows New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie only six percentage points behind President Obama, Reuters says. Only Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney poll better against Obama, with Huckabee in a dead heat and Romney trailing the president by one percentage point, 43% to 44%.
DANIELS: The Hill writes up Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels’ appearance on Andrea Mitchell Reports yesterday, noting that he said he wouldn’t campaign on his record his governor but instead on “the future.”
GINGRICH: “Former Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) confirmed he will make a decision on a presidential bid by the beginning of May,” The Hill writes. “‘We're trying to finish out the exploratory process, and I think by the first week of May, we'll have done that,’ Gingrich told reporters on Capitol Hill Thursday.”
ROMNEY: “Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney raised almost $1.9 million during the first three months of the year as he laid the groundwork for an expected presidential run,” the AP reports.
“A top Mitt Romney official told supporters on a conference call Thursday that the former Massachusetts governor is eyeing mid-to-late April to begin raising money for his eventual presidential campaign, according to call participants,” Politico writes.

The self rightous rocker only paid only $4,639 in property taxes for 200 acres of land next to his mansion by claiming it as agriculteral land. Pay your fair share you hypicritical liberal and maybe they could afford those programs. Working man my butt.
Hey Rico, are you saying it's not farm land ? And what, your 200 acres is farm land ? What, you don't have 200 acres? What do you want it classified as, heavy industrial? All empty land in the middle of nowhere, anywhere in the country gets classifed as farmland. Until it is ready for development, that's all its good for. Give me a break. Your jealousy is showing.
dirp101 we both know it's not farm land any more than my 2.2 acres in suburbia is. I'm not jealous only pointing out the lefts hypocriousy. If Christie owned that land you be foaming at the mouth and blaberying about the rich getting richer on the backs of the poor. Time for the Boss to write a song about people living in glass houses throwing rocks.
Rico: The auditor classifies land use. If it is empty land, in a rural area, it is farmland. Give up.
Cathy when you build a multi million dollar gated mansion it is not a farm it is an estate. Pay up.
When a McMansion is built on farmland, its classification is changed to residential.
This is pure distraction. The issue is republican governors giving huge tax breaks to the rich while cutting services to the middle class.
Hey, that's a great strategy, Rico, Mentor OH . Attacking iconic New Jersey rocker Bruce Springteen. That ought to win Republicans a lot of votes! Keep it up!
So Amy, you are saying that because he is iconic rocker that he shouldn't have to pay his fair share in taxes. I thought those of you on the left were for the rich paying more in taxes, more than their fair share.
As long as a rich person is giving to liberal causes, they don't have to pay their fair share in taxes?
Warren Buffet?
George Soros?
No..
She only thinks that if they are Democrats/liberals they shouldn't be attacked. it doens't matter if they are Rich and not paying their Fair Share. the only time its not Fair is if they have an R after their name. Other then that . its all good..
Republicans have launched so many smear campaigns against opponents in recent years, no one bothers to fact check them any more. Thanks to Republican efforts, the honorable name of the Swiftboat Veterans has entered dictionaries as a term for political slander. The American public is wise to you guys. (But be my guest, throw more mud on the guy who wrote Born in the USA!)
If it's a legitimate deduction then he's entitled to it. Many wealthy landowners in NJ claim the farmland subsidy. So what. It's up to the people in NJ to change the law if they don't want people taking advantage of a tax break available to them. You're just upset that someone of Springsteen's stature doesn't find Christie's policies palatable.
Laurie, do you say "its a legitimate deduction" when you rant against the "evil rich"?
"someone of Springsteen's stature"?
He is a singer. Unless you are a groupie, you shouldnt really care what his political vieews are.
Everyone should pay their fair share of taxes, and that includes conservatives.
Ask bachmann how much in subsidies she recd for her farmland. Also how much she gets paid for taking in foster children. Talk about hypocritical, you've got her.
Attacking Michelle Bachmann because she adopted foster children?
You are pond scum.
Its funny how Bachmann kinda ruined their full steam ahead ...the min she opened her trap ...they realized "big mistake" they have already fired the weeper of the house saying he will be replaced in 2012 ..with someone they run against him ...in 2 meetings so far this week ..she was the recall topic ...and several asked "who made her the head of the tea party"? Being a loud mouthed lier does not a leader make !...It will be interesting theater to watch as they replace her ...
