President Obama before a speech in Washington today. According to a new Quinnipiac poll, the president's approval rating has slipped to 42%.
The Washington Post writes on the latest from Libya: "The rebels’ chaotic retreat from the town of Bin Jawwad, which they had captured from troops loyal to Gaddafi just two days earlier, reversed the momentum they had seized over the weekend and suggested that the ad hoc and lightly armed opposition force may have reached the limits of its capacity."
Tom Friedman says he hopes Obama is lucky. "I hope Qaddafi’s regime collapses like a sand castle, that the Libyan opposition turns out to be decent and united and that they require just a bare minimum of international help to get on their feet. Then U.S. prestige will be enhanced and this humanitarian mission will have both saved lives and helped to lock another Arab state into the democratic camp. Dear Lord, please make President Obama lucky."
Obama’s approval is at an all-time low in a new Quinnipiac poll -- just 42% approve; 48% disapprove. And by a 50%-41% margin, those surveyed say he does not deserve reelection. That’s a switch in less than a month from a 46%-46% job approval and 45%-47% split on his reelection. (He’s upside down with independents 39%-51%.) On Libya, by a 47%-41% margin, voters oppose U.S. involvement, and by a 58%-29% margin respondents say the president hasn’t stated the goals clearly.
The New York Daily News on Obama’s fundraiser in New York: “The cash bash raked in a cool $1.5 million for the Democratic National Committee. As hundreds of New Yorkers jammed the streets outside hoping to get a peek at the Prez, Obama rubbed elbows with movers and shakers inside the hot spot. He received a standing ovation as he emerged from the kitchen after being ushered in through a back alley.”
More on Obama’s New York trip from the Daily News here.
“President Obama will not throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Washington Nationals's opening day game on Thursday,” The Hill writes. “The 44th president participated in the long-standing tradition last year, when he stepped on the mound at Nationals Park donning a Nats jacket and the cap of his favorite team, the Chicago White Sox.” And it wasn’t pretty.
The question has been raised: Where was Biden on Libya? The New York Post: “While President Obama was putting the finishing touches on his Libya conflict speech, and Moammar Khaddafy was plotting his next attack on his people, an apparently stressed-out Joe Biden took a minibreak to a ritzy Aspen-area ski resort. The vice president spent four nights at Snowmass Village in Colorado, arriving in the snow-covered town late Thursday night and leaving Monday -- while members of Congress wrangled over the federal budget. ‘It's a pretty low-key visit, definitely a vacation,’ Pitkin County Sheriff Joe DiSalvo, whose office helped provide security for the visiting veep, told the Aspen Times.”

Perhaps if the public didn't hang unto every hypocritical lying word from the media, namely FOX, and the GOP/TP that wouldn't be.
A Fox News executive, Bill Sammon, said he was just engaging in “mischievous speculation” in raising the charge. In fact, Sammon said he “privately” believed that the socialism allegation was “rather far-fetched.”
He also told the cruise guests that “when it comes to spending money, Obama makes Bush look like a piker.

The GOP/T-BAGGERS have the nerve to be un-nerved by Democratic Senator Charles Schumer
Because they are extreme. Schumer knows this and so does everyone else.
What a load you have on Bev.
Bev, I don't see anywhere in this tread that Fox News wrote anything. The more you rant to more you look like an angry old woman. The daily beast and from a blog? Yup, that's straight up fair news.
So we caught Schemer in his own words. Just like his President.
It would be fun to google the invasion of Iraq and see at what point the media sounded the alarm that toppling Saddam without international support, disbanding the Baath Party, using private contractors for previously military supported services, etc was not a winning strategy. What's it been in Libya now, ten days?
Fun Amy? Well let's see if you have your facts straight, you know if you improved from the last time you posted false information.
Geez Amy, again you put your foot in your mouth and posted false information. I'm seeing this is the norm for you.
Countries that supported the US.
War with Iraq 40+ countries
War with Libya 16.
The Baath Party wasn't disarmed, it was the Iraqi Army. There's a difference in the two.
Private contractors to fill the void due to the fact there isn't enough Soldiers to fulfill
Keep trying Amy, maybe one of your friends can defend you.
I find the entire poll odd, makes me wonder how the questions were asked. It's too far out of touch with other recent polls--doesn't mean it is wrong, just an oddity. Early last week there were polls showing a large majority of Americans supporting action in Libya. Still, it isn't any wonder there would be a shift on that when the media spent last week convincing viewers that Pres Obama was doing too much, not enough, should have done it sooner, was too soon; and they all jumped on the legislators who were complaining "he didn't ask us" bandwagon without asking why Senators voted for the Mar 1 resolution supporting the action, and no one asked the 18 legislators why they did nothing.
One thing I appreciate about President Obama, he does not make his decisions based on the polls or if it will be popular, he bases it on what is right.
What's his approval rating? So your logic is that the American people don't know what's right, but Obama does? That's odd.
I find it hard to believe that the Barry is a war president. I can't stop laughing since he started to throw missiles into Libya.
Tom Malinowski is the Washington director of Human Rights Watch, he writes:
Here is one lesson we can draw from the mostly negative media commentary about the Obama administration's actions in Libya: Presidents get more credit for stopping atrocities after they begin than for preventing them before they get out of hand.
It is legitimate to challenge the Obama administration about its objectives and how it plans to achieve them. It's reasonable to be concerned about the impact the air war will have on civilians if it continues indefinitely. We do not know what will happen next in Libya, or where this all will lead--we never do. But we do know what has likely been averted. And for that we should be grateful.

Amy. That's the same thing that happened with the economy. Because we didn't sink into Depression, the President gets little to no credit for preventing it at least not from the noise makers and the media created storyline.
Obama Agenda: Retreat...
The impact that has been made in the entire region is the total opposite of "retreat". Many CHANGES that are taking place in the region represent an engagement of bridging divides in other worldwide concerns between dictatorships and the need for liberty.
Twist and spin it however it suits you guys but this is in no way an agenda of the president but of the media attempting to further fan flames of criticisms with no thought about... well, with no thought.
The simple fact that you take a rebel "retreat" from a small pocket and place it as a headline about President Obama's agenda is a loss of credibility.
LouisJ,
Obama has lost credibility prior to his playing army in Libya. As for the media, well, it is fair to say that all of the alphabet new channels give the guy a pass, throwing his snowballs continuously. Only a hand full will question as they should.
The media, especially the left-wing networks would critise Bush daily with abuse and distortions while the slightest question about Obama will have you categorized as a racist.
We still talking about Bush? According to you guys, I thought he was gone. Just sayin'.
LJ, T
alking about Bush?????What a hoot of a response to a question. The lefties would abuse Bush daily while your guy gets tossed the softballs - for now. How do you justify all of the Obama expeditures for a week or so of the Obama war?
Now how can you equate that the war in Libya is over for the US when Obama is just beginning to escalate this?
Word of the day: FLICKER.
Shooting the messenger...sad
According to the Republicans, if our President is a. .
1. Democrat bombing? He is weak. He is undecisive. He doesn't know what he is doing. A Republican? He is strong. Decisive. Don't ask him any questions so we don't endanger our troops.
2. A Democrat trying to fix the budget? Too much debt. Ransoming our childrens future. Don't know how to balance a budget. A Republican? Hide the spending and are praysed for being "fiscally responsible" regardless of the high spending levels. Quit asking him any questions about it so we don't endanger our troops.
3. A Democrat going on vacation twice a year? On vacation too much, golf too much, why isn't he doing his job? A Republican? He can get his job done anywhere. Family is important. R and R is important. Quit asking him any questions about it so we don't endanger our troops.
Again I spelled "praised" wrong up top. Please forgive! My bad!
Ana,
According to the Republicans or your interpretation?
Anabanana, You Dems broke the piggybank.
I see that another series of tomahawks were launched by a US warship prior to obamas "turning over" operations to NATO.
If the rebels are in retreat, does this mean that obamas close air to ground support failed? Perhaps obama reread the UN resolution and called it off? Yepper, the FR libs must be having a field day on this.
Who is retreating? The Marxist rebels or Obamba? I'd like to know.
for all the criticism obama gets, maybe you'd prefer a critical airhead like bachmann or palin for president. you don't know bad leadership - yet! elect one of them, and you will know the difference. give the man a break!
Apparently you have forgotten Carter, or are we practicing revisionist history here?
Mrsbuzz, They would have given us capitalism. Instead we got Marxism and socialism from an elite who has lied to everyone.
So your defense of the Obama admisistration is, "It could be worse."???? And then only qorse in comparrison to two of the craziest extremests out there...
Well Hold on then maybe we should just consider how lucky we are... (that would have been sarcasm, I'm not sure it comes accross in text)
Good one....I got it!
mrsbuzz,
You are so unarmed in a war of any rational thinking. Obama has to be the worst Pres in the history of our country. Any City Mayor would have more worth while leouadership experience the Obama has. Spout off all you want, but Obama will not be treated kindly by history and it won't be beacause he is black. It is because he is an id---.
Louis Farakan's "brother" Obama better watch his back at the polls in 2011. Farakan does not like it when Obama sends missiles to Libya. Farakan may send his goons out to the polls with billy clubs in hand to coerce everyone to vote for Republicans in 2011. YES !
Farry was very hard on Obamba. I did not like his tone of voice. He's mad that Obamba is killing his Muslim brother Ka'daffy and he had some strong words for him. Its the first time I have seen Farry peed off.
Juven, Louis was easy on Obamba you should see what Malik Shabazz had to say.
Sound the Retreat.
Have anyone noticed since Obamba became President he has thrown and betrayed everyone he knew in the past under the bus. The man has gone off the deep end.
Good point! Only when it is hurting Obama will he then ditch a friend. :)
Obama's "advance and "retreat" is normal. His bottom line is "floating" into any light that will shine his image as a competent president!
Obama's speech on Libya was a repetitive re-hash of scrappy points that couldn't be put together to form a recognizable objective in foreign policy! Points of his speech contradicted each-other in an back-and-forth shift that in the end they left the focus of the mission in Libya still at a floating stage. That's typical Obama, where imitation is an art, and self-preservation is a virtue!
Obama inherited George Bush's doctrine in full swing in Iraq and Afghanistan, and as a "green-foot" president as George Bush was, he just let the American diplomacy boat floating in the battering waves of Bush's presidency. He is still living in the cocoon of the Bush's legacy fearful that any deviation from Bush's doctrine will label him as a "softie" at the time that the domestic terrorist propaganda in the media had turned most Americans into zombies of a jihaddist threat lurking always around them! We are at the point where even toddlers are body-searched at our airports.
Obama's Libyan intervention was decided at a time that senator John McCain - who during his presidential campaign against Obama was chanting at political rallies "Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Iran- was blasting the president for inaction! Obama, again, jumped into the Libyan conflict to avoid being labeled a "softie" on his 2012 re-election campaign. Obama doesn't really care to preserve the rebellion in Libya; he is moved only by his own self-served preservation on the 2012 re-election track. His Libyan involvement, therefore, was just a steroid-driven decision to portray himself as a "dynamic" figure that can handle anything thrown at him! The Libyan Revolution was just a bone thrown at him, and he decided to chew on it to prove that he had fangs, and he was not a "poodle" in war matters - as Tony Blair, the former British prime minister- was labeled during the Iraq invasion.
Obama's instinct of self-preservation is clouding his thinking as the drums of the 2012 presidential election are tuned up! And his tuned speech on the
virtue of the U.S. effort to promote democracy in Libya was actually an effort to ingratiate himself in the global spotlight as a statesman, while blasting Iran for quashing minor demonstrations, and hushing massive demonstrations and the killings of dozens of demonstrators by our despotic allies in Bahrain and Yemen! Surely, he has proved to be "value oriented" when he decides who would be bombed and who will get a pass for similar misdeeds, but his record has proved that he is more addicted to hypocrisy than he is addicted to juicy cheeseburgers!
Would the aforesaid Obama attributes help his re-election in 2012? Well, maybe. The U.S. elections are based on spotlight and money spend - not on democratic principles harvested from the Greek philosophy. The birth of democracy in Greece was invented on the concept that the candidates proved their "highest virtues" at the "demos" (local) gatherings [similar to a tribal gathering] and decided who to support for power ("cracy"- from the Greek verb "crato" -hold power. But unfortunately, the candidates here are taking office not on their own worth and virtue, but on the results created by hundreds of millions of dollars spent in campaigns rhetoric that flood, saturate, and twist the minds of voters beyond their logical threshold! Presidential campaigns here are, therefore, like "carpet bombing" in a war. Terrain is obliterated in a war, and clear thinking is obliterated in presidential campaigns! Obama's speech on Libya, therefore, was not actually about Libya; it was a "carpet bombing" of his domestic and foreign critics! Nikos Retsos, retired professor
Nikos Retsos
What would you have had him do?
One thing I can say is that all these unrest and slaughter in the Arab countries by extremists from North Africa to the Mid -East would result in most of the Arab countries would become more radicalized and in the not too distant future they would turn those very guns against the US and Israel.. If anyone thinks otherwise they are fools. We haven't learned the lessons from the Arabs who created Al Quaeda. And we all know where that led to.
It is like we've been on a bad road trip since 1993. Back then the kids (the GOP) just kept whining are we there yet? They complained that the trip planner, Clinton, was a liar, a cheat and a philanderer. Then in 2000 the kids saw the first amusement park along the road, and through shear luck we stopped to get gas at the same time. The kids didn't really like the amusement park (Bush), but it was better than sitting next to the incessantly talking uncle (Gore). We stayed much too long in the crappy amusement park, spent way too much money, and finally got sick on stale pop corn and cotton candy. Switched drivers in '08 (Obama) and got back on the road. The kids are still whining are we there yet? And they've made the others in the car either sick (recession), quite stressed out (tea party), or very disenchanted with the whole trip idea (independents). No surprise everyone is blaming the driver. What most independents wanted when they voted Obama, instead of Clinton, was no drama and a smooth ride for a change. The GOP has learned that if they keep the water always boiling they can peel away those independents who just want the noise to stop. In other words, independents with no strong political or ideological ties will give in to the whining kids just to make the noise stop.
Wm.-375815
Very insightful analogy and I agree with the effect of the GOP noise machine on Independents. One of my co-workers laughed out loud when I asked her if she had watched the Libya speech. She thinks it's "funny" I follow politics. We forget how many people out there just want to watch Dancing with the Stars and eat their ice cream.
This sums up what Obama has decided to do fairly well. That is, take a huge gamble on a huge unknown all in an effort to avoid the truth and keep from looking like G. Bush.
Now Obamba what about the other Arab countries where Al Quaeda people are slaughtering their own. Syria for example, the Demon of Damascus is having a good time so too are the other dicktators. And Obamba is just giving speeches. What about N.Korea and Iran? Naturally Obamba don't have the clue or he is quailing before reality. The man is a pakky. So Obamba is a Sunni. So what does he care about the Shiites. Nothing. He won't interefere where the Shiites are dominant.
