Libya war cost

From NBC's Jim Miklaszewski
The Pentagon reports that through March 28, the U.S. military operation has cost $550 million. The bulk of that is for munitions. The cost for the 199 Tomahawk missiles fired alone is somewhere between $220 to $298 million.

Pentagon officials say once NATO forces takeover the bulk of the mission, the U.S. military cost should be approximately $40 million over the next three weeks.

Thank you Jim. Just curious, when was your last report on how much the Iraq and Afghanistan's wars cost?

*ouch*

Good one Patrick!

I wonder why Jim didn't point out that thanks to President Obama's pragmatism, we didn't incur 100% of the cost either?

Guess I'm just 'picky' that way... lol

What is the cost of the Iraq and Afghanistan war so far and what are the tradeoffs? As of March 2011, 4,441 Americans have died in Iraq as have as many as 150,000 civilians, and another 4.5 million civilians have been displaced. In Afghanistan, 1,513 Americans have died and, although accurate counts are hard to come by, as many as 8,000 Afghan civilians have been killed and another 3.7 million refugees are internally displaced or living in neighboring countries.

The cost of those who died in these wars is immeasurable, but the dollar tradeoffs can be calculated.

The total dollar cost of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan so far exceeds $1.171 trillion. The taxpayers in California will pay $21.8 billion for proposed total Iraq and Afghanistan war spending for FY2011. To place this figure in perspective, this money could have provided 7.5 million low-income people with healthcare for one year or 14.7 million low-income children with healthcare for one year or 7.8 million homes with renewable electricity -- solar photovoltaic for one year or 2.5 million Head Start places for children for one year or 283,672 elementary school teachers for one year or 234,012 police or sheriff's patrol officers for one year or 2.6 million scholarships for university students for one year.

Drive By - why don't you man up and go to where 3wolves is and tell him who he can and cannot bring up.

Now that would be something, cause see as far as I'm concerned he gets to say whatever he wants on any topic about war.

You got that Drive. This time it's serious, unless you think war is funny. Well do you Drive By? Is what 3wolves is doing amusing to you?

Thank the good Lord that McCain wasn't elected in '08 or we would still be on the rocks with the throttle at full speed ahead! I can see it now the Captain McCrusty hanging over the side giving her a good scrubbing while the Mad Trapper was selling the lifeboats... I sure am glad Obama at least had the good sense to have the ship towed back to the shipyard!

Gee, if only we had that $485 million dollar alternative engine that the airforce emphatically didn't want but that Cantor (R) and Boehner (R) tried to save because it was made in their districts. That would have helped keep costs down for the no fly zone the Republicans clamored for (until President Obama set it up.)

The only time republicans complain about the military costs of anything is IF a democrat takes action. Otherwise, they simply respond to the question: will that be Mastercard or Visa?

Aww devie, that really is sad.

My only question to you is is that a comment based upon ignorance or is it that you know but just don't care?

For your sake I'm truely hoping it's just ignorance. Unfortunately I fear it's just more hypocrisy.

Do you support 3wolves devie?

LOL It's also wrong, idiot. The total cost of the war in Iraq has been estimated to be over 2 trillion dollars, after the life-time medical costs of all the badly wounded soldiers is taken into account. The stimulus was less that half that, and has an economic recovery to show for it, not a country reduced to rubble, which is what the Iraq war produced.

Indeed Pius

Republican/Teabagger goons are a bunch of diabolical and unrestrained hypocrites using sleaze ball tactics

Like I said before suddenly when it's President Obama--"The Thrill is Gone" to spend money for War?

Thank you Mr. President for being the only adult in the room. I'm proud you are the Nobel Peace Prize winner. In your acceptance speech you spoke in unequivocal terms what you would do and you did it.

……… Barack Obama 2002...against war Now let me be clear. I suffer no illusions about Saddam Hussein. He is a brutal man. A ruthless man. A man who butchers his own people to secure his own power. He has repeatedly defied UN resolutions, thwarted UN inspection teams, developed chemical and biological weapons and coveted nuclear capacity. He’s a bad guy. The world and the Iraqi people, would be better off without hi. But I also know that Saddam poses no imminent and direct threat to the United States.

……… Barack Obama 2006...against raising debt ceiling The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s deblt limit is a sign of LEADERSHIP FAILURE. It is a sign that the US Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies..increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here’. Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.

The people need to take the power away from the president /congress ...to go to war ... as we have seen they cant be trusted ! Everything should be done with a vote by the people other then a Nuke attack ! Nothing is that pressing that we cant wait 2 months for a vote ...and NO foreign pay offs on monthly basis with out the people voting on who and any amount over 10K ....this is how you keep these "BUMS" in check ! Not with the current weeper of the house !

I do not believe in war, but I do believe in humanitarian relief. The United States and the many other nations chose the right avenue, to prevent the slaughter of human beings and to send a message to the rest of the middle east. Now, could we have some humanitarin relief in this country?

  • 3 votes
Reply#5 - Tue Mar 29, 2011 11:40 AM EDT

I agree. If the US does not stand for humanitarian relief and try to stop the slaughter of thousands, we stand for nothing.

As for humanitarian relief in this country, e-mail the legislators and I'd suggest targeting the GOP/TP ones since they are the ones determined to cut the humanitarian relief that exists today while continuing to support the tax loopholes that allow companies like GE, Exxon to pay little to no taxes.

A ruined economy and now a war to finance.
