The Week Ahead: Libya in focus, but shutdown looms

When Congress returns next week, its focus will be Libya, but the threat of a government shutdown is still very real. Plus, new jobs numbers come out on Friday, and more Republicans hit the trail.

Got an opinion?

If you were half as 'perceptive' as you think you are, you would already know what my 'opinion' on the Libyian situation is... bag boy...

Then again, that would require you actually read what's written rather than running from post to post lifting your little leg.

Hey MB, Syria is killing civilians. Any thoughts about intervention? I know they don't have much oil, but it's all about humanitarianism, right?

We have a President to make that call, Indy Lib.

You need to ask him if he has any thoughts along those lines.

Actually...it's not all about humanitarianism to me, IL. That's the excuse that the left is using to rationalize a Libyan intervention they would despise otherwise.

When it comes to the deployment of the U.S. military, I don't see where we have anyone other than the President in a position to decide in a timely fashion.

That's the bottom line for me.

The news from Libya pushed this off of the front pages, but last Friday, a letter signed by 64 U.S.Senators...32 Democrats and 32 Republicans, was sent to President Obama, asking him to expand talks about the budget and the debt crisis. The letter recommends that tax and entitlement reform be a part of any discussions.

Separately, six U.S. Senators: Dick Durbin (D-IL), Kent Conrad (D-ND), Mark Warner (D-VA), Tom Coburn (R-OK), Mike Crapo (R-ID), and Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) have been working together to craft legislation based on the Plan put forth by President Obama's debt commission.

No matter what events...Libya, the Japan earthquake and tsunami, whatever...push the U.S. debt crisis off of center stage, it always returns.

          Always.

This is the single issue that will define the Obama Presidency.

President Obama needs to get started...the sooner, the better.

Don't forget Obama's budget proposal that will add 9.5 trillion over the next ten years. Also this does not include the interest on the debt. According to Obama you don't need to budget for that. We won't make it 10 years with this guy in office. Same Obama that has stated over and over, the federal government has to live within it means. "I do not intend to leave debt from my administration for the next generation" Obama speak. Do opposite.

Rick, How about the cost of over $255,000 per job it cost the taxpayers to create the jobs that the stimulus package created. How about the additional 200,000 federal workers that have been added to the rolls we citizens must pay for from our pockets at a time when government needs to shrink instead of grow? I voted for Obama, but am bitterly disappointed. The Taxacrats have not yet gotten the message. Not sure the Republicans have either.

The 61 billion the GOP is talking about is totally unacceptable.

Rand Paul has advanced aplan that would cut 500 billion.

Urge conservatives to vote for it and remind then we handed them the largest electoral vicroy in 70 years to cut spending and repeal the insurance farce.

We removed a lot of republican incumbents in the primaries last year and we will be doing it again you start this RINO crap again.

The dems/libs can be ignored, they will vote dem if Obama annouced tomorrow that he is a practicing pedophile, they will still vote dem.

They want their freebies and are unconcerned about who hands them to the life forms with their hand out.

Start cutting republicans, get serious about it, you can bet we are serious about it.

Oh how true that statement is. The problem with Obama is that he seems unable to make decisions. Just look at the months he took to make a decision on a troop escalation in Afghanistan, and he typically avoids making a decision on tough issues - something he learned as a State Senator in Illinois when he would vote "Present" on hard issues so he could avoid his responsibilities.

          I think Obama's legacy will be something like;

"President Obama presided over the largest runup in the National Debt in history, which led to drastic economic consequences, including massive unemployment and drastic austerity programs that were felt for decades".

From George Washington to the last day of George W. Bush's 2nd term the federal deficit was 10 trillion dollars, in Obama's first 2 years Obama was able to add another 4.2 trillion dollars. How is he going to bring that number down? As far as I know all he wants to do is invest (spend) that is what he did the first two years and it failed, he better give the reign to the Republicans for a while!!!

Rick, you may try and ignore the facts stated in my response to you, however it does not make reality go away. I have more in common with fiscal conservatives, but Republicans need to follow through with reigning in the biggest federal government this country has ever had. Obam created this record making bloated government in just 2-years. The Democrats continue their policy of buying votes from those that hope to get more for nothing while Obama's policies continue to drive this nation further into debt. Another fact is that the top 10% of wage earners pay 90% of the taxes collected by the Feds. That is still not enough to satisfy those who have been neutered by government handouts and have lost the ability to better themselves like many of us have with hardwork and taking chances. Aloha.

          How blue can you get?

Perhaps, this will help you. You could start by removing that dishonest hatchet job Georgie boy gave US which send our debt through the roof. Bush did not put the 2 wars on the books. President Obama did.

President Bush excluded funding for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan from the regular 2007 defense budget, requiring Congress to pass a separate, supplemental bill to pay for them.

          http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Congressional_actions_to_end_the_Iraq_War_in_the_110th_Congress#Articles_and_resources

Generally, taxes rise during wartime and then come back down in the years afterward. Start with the Civil War. World War I. World War II and others; but exclude Afghanistan and Iraq since Georgie boy cut taxes and didn't put them on the books.

          http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2009/nov/30/paul-krugman/krugman-says-bush-was-first-president-lead-country/

Americans are out of work, yet t -baggers want to cut spending—that means cutting jobs. So essentially, what you are saying is President Obama has spent more in the last 200 years combined in the two years since George Washington? That's ridiculous!

          FYI:

Dick Morris told the same lie that from the time George Washington became president to Obama, we borrowed $9 trillion. And since Obama has taken office, we've borrowed almost 5 trillion more.

          http://mediamatters.org/research/201101070022

According to those figures, the debt from the nation's birth through the end of 2008 -- George Washington through George W. Bush -- was $5.8 trillion.

Now, had [Eric]Cantor stuck with the original timeline of two years, we would need to limit our look at the increase in public federal debt between the end of 2008 and the end of 2010, which has been almost $3.5 trillion. That would make the claim false by a long shot.

          http://www.politifact.com/virginia/statements/2010/nov/07/eric-cantor/cantor-says-obama-budget-adds-more-debt-totaled-43/

Hey, all, time to celebrate spring and HCR at the Dew Drop Inn. I have made two cakes, so there should be plenty for all! What oh what have we learned this week? People in the middle east continue on in their march to freedom, and isn't odd how often protecting workers seems to come up with those protesters? Could be a lesson learned for the rest of us if we would pay attention. Little Sarah, off on spring break with hubby Todd in India and Israel, both criticized a war time President on foreign soil (where oh where was the outrage, right wing?) and informed us that the problems with the settlements in Israel were simply "zoning problems". Doggone it, why didn't she tell us that YEARS ago, now someone let the various city councils settle the question once and for all! And, in the march to theocracy brought to us by the "teabaggers", Rep. Forbes from Virginia wants to make legislation that makes it for sure forever (amen) that "In God we trust" is the National motto. He simply doesn't care that the Founders had made their own selection, those Founders can be pretty pesky when they don't agree with mental "giants" like Forbes. So, folks, things area getting sillier by the day, which makes it so much more interesting, don't you think? My thanks always to my hosts, with special thanks for a very thoughtful answer to my question, I enjoyed the response. IR; time to party! Hoping our new friends Mickey in NY and Tunde Adkins can join us in a toast to progressive thought at the Dew Drop Inn. Feisty, and gang! I'll be a bit late tonight...going to help my married cherubs move into their first ever very own house. Could you please have a Dew Drop Inn champagne toast to their happiness, and I'll pay the tab later!

Enjoyed your post, newdayDawning. Some weeks, there's just much odd ball things to talk about. I wonder if Forbes knows the history of In God We Trust on our coins--for much of the early years, it was added only in times of war. Have fun moving the cherubs, we'll certainly toast the first new house.

Ohh, two cakes--more than enough for the regulars and special guests.

If it all the same to you I'll substitute a little of that good ol' Mountain Dew for the champagne. Bubbly makes me sneeze

What I learned this week, is, there are a substantial amount of trolls who lurk around here, who would scream they're starving with a loaf of bread under each arm!

They b!tch just to hear themselves b!tch - nothing more and nothing less...

Hey - Did you all see where Elizabeth Taylor was late to her own funeral (per her request)! LOL

She managed to have the 'last word'...

            NDD,

So happy for your youngsters on MOVING day! I know you have been helping with the painting and the fixing up! You've raised them up right and there will be many happy occassions for you all in the new space! I wonder if Sey will visit?

Thanks, Clara, and all concerned are glad that the painting is OVER! Hubby and I dropped off our 30+year old snowblower for them to use. This is the third generation that has used it. Man alive they knew how to make a snowblower in those days. We were pretty blase about loading it on the truck...until we found out that not only did they make them well....they made them weigh about 200 lbs! Wound up buying ramps to get it on the truck, and got it there in time for the last blizzard. Their move is wearing us OUT! Didn't take Sey over during painting, collie pups being rather curious and "helpful" but he and Jolie will visit soon.

Dang is it Friday already? Don’t time fly when you’re having fun?

Looks like we’ve got the politics pretty well covered this week and I see that nobodies come to any permanent harm. Hope everybody takes the week end and rubs the bruises and scrapes a little and shows up bright and early Monday morning for another go round. Looks like it’s going to be an interesting week.

President Obama has made his way back home from the South American trip that seems to have caused so much consternation and by all indications seems to have had some measure of success in the endeavor.

Secretary of State Clinton seems to have been successful in turning over command and control of the Libyan Shindig to NATO. I would suggest that if some are still concerned about clarity of the mission that they contact the NATO Commander or the U.N Security Council and perhaps they could shed a little light on the subject for you.

Few other things have come up this week:

Elizabeth Taylor, the actress who dazzled generations of moviegoers with her stunning beauty and whose name was synonymous with Hollywood glamour, died on Wednesday of congestive heart failure at Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, her publicist, Sally Morrison, told The Associated Press. She was 79

In a statement reported by ABC News, her son Michael Wilding said: “My Mother was an extraordinary woman who lived life to the fullest, with great passion, humor, and love. Though her loss is devastating to those of us who held her so close and so dear, we will always be inspired by her enduring contribution to our world.”

Senator Warner’s place is just over the hill and down the hollow. Ms. Taylor graced Virginia for a little over five years and her grace, beauty and warm heart will be missed by all of us. Go with God Pretty Lady

Down at the Dew Drop Inn we have decided that since it’s pick a Holiday weekend we are going to have a Celebration of Spring in addition to our tournament watching this weekend. Seems kind of appropriate since we’ve got some green beer left over from St. Patty’s day and we need to dispense it before it goes bad and we’ve got some Hoop Cheese left over from our guests that weren’t here that we need to serve before it turns green. Heard a rumor that we may even have some Birthday cake to celebrate HCR’s one year anniversary. Maybe we can bottle up some Spring and ship it out to some of our friends and neighbors that are still being afflicted with wind chills and snowdrifts. Anyway you’ll come on down as soon as you can and wave your bracket sheets at one another and talk trash and general have a high old time. A portion of the profits this weekend are going to be sent to Elizabeth Taylor’s AIDS Foundation.

Over at the Come Back Inn we’ve developed a little problem that I’m going to have to take care of this weekend sometime. Apparently those Revenuer fellows that I kind of sent off toward the Trail when they came around looking for our guests that weren’t here have managed to get themselves lost out on the Ridge somewhere. Seems like just like the Governor’s that sent them they can’t find their butts with both hands and a map. Now the guests are complaining about disembodied voices being heard at all hours of the day and night and the kids think they’re ghosts and haints and such like and it’s scaring them. Reckon I’ll have to take a little time and go gather them up and spot them cab fare to get home. We have some space available since our guests that ain’t here have gone on back up north to wherever they didn’t come from so you’ll come on down set a spell and take a load off your………….mind. The Big Room as always will be there for you’ll whose bracket’s are already busted and overindulge in drowning your pique. For the foreseeable future a potion of the profits from the Come Back Inn will be sent to the Japanese Relief Effort in honor of Grimey’s son’s elementary class.

Barkeep set me and my friends up a round. Drive –by do you think maybe we could reach back in the Juke Box archives and maybe play a little Johnny Green “Raintree County”. Maybe some Eddie Fisher “Anytime” or “Dungaree Hill” for the Pretty Lady.

As always my thanks and appreciation to our hosts for their time, giving me a little place to stand, a subject to comment on, a forum to put it in, and their indulgence when I don’t quite get it right or get a little off subject. I purely do appreciate it. Hope you’ll have a fine weekend and good fun among folks that you know and love. To my fellow participants keep well, keep safe, and keep the faith. We’ll make it. See you’ll next week

This morning's newspaper. "Subject country's economic future looks increasingly bleak due to political paralysis, a grinding debt and a long recession. The subject country's woes quickly piled up due to the cash stapped government and rejection of its debt-reduction plan. Borrowing costs surged to unsustainable levels while an international ratings agency downgraded its credit worthiness. The country is Portugal. See where we are headed. We have an inept President who has a spending habit second to none and a just as inept congress. Go ahead tell yourself it can't happn here. If we do not get rid of Obama, and his spending friends in congress, this will surely happen sooner than later. We need leadership in Washington to be able to return to fiscal responsibility before it is too late.

I am glad you are so happy. Keep thinking the good times will continue with borrowed money. The President is acting irresponsibly when it comes to this country's financial future. None of what you seem to be so happy about has any relevance or substance in terms of providing leadership when it comes to dealing with this nations most serious issues. You keep following the Piped Piper of spending and see where you end up. You better re-read what is going on in Portugal as we are not to far behind that day right here in the USA. Enough people will understand that the spending is out of control and a change at the top is needed. Obama needs to take a lesson from Harry Truman, "The Buck Stops Here". You not understanding what that means and continuing to look backwards is not a concern. However, we have a President doing the same thing which is a real problem for this nation. Obama will continue to eat his own words, and the day will come when you will as well.

            Good afternoon Tony C-2383666

I am glad you are so happy. Keep thinking the good times will continue with borrowed money. The President is acting irresponsibly when it comes to this country's financial future. None of what you seem to be so happy about has any relevance or substance in terms of providing leadership when it comes to dealing with this nations most serious issues. You keep following the Piped Piper of spending and see where you end up.

You better re-read what is going on in Portugal as we are not to far behind that day right here in the USA.

Stick a sock in it. You can talk your ears off; nonetheless your rhetoric does not face reality. The Republican/T-Baggers can't Govern; the sooner you learn the better off your worries will be rather being a political gadfly.

If that's the case, then you should read what the GOP/T-Baggers are doing to destroy this country economically and socially. Better yet you read what the populist are doing in London to oppose cuts. Eerily, it is similar to the thousands and thousands of people opposing union busting.

President Obama made it clear that he does not feel America must intervene every time there is unrest in the world.

            a. Republicans seem less concerned with job creation than they are with using the budget battles to push a radical social issues. How many jobs have Republicans created? That would be NONE, ZERO, since this the third month of GOP control.

Union: GM to recall 2,000 laid-off workers

            http://detnews.com/article/20110324/AUTO01/103240394/0/rss4331/Union--GM-to-recall-2-000-laid-off-workers

            b. Republicans wanted GM to go bankrupt which, by the way, would have had an impact on other businesses.

            c. Republican/T-Baggers were against building allies for libya and the UN resolution. In fact you righties want the building torn down. President Obama stressed the involvement of the international community. Also, President Obama reiterated that no ground forces would have been used in this operation, and confirmed that leadership of this effort will be handed over to NATO. Get it? There will be no "Cowboy Go it Along" un-excellent adventure in warfare and diplomacy.

I reiterate-- for that the President has restored our image and I'm proud of it. I prefer a cautious and measured approach. When celebrating rebels chanted "Thank you, Obama", "Thank you, Cameron" I view it as a much better image for the world than shoes being lobbed at George Bush's head.

But, you obviously being an informed low information person can only dismiss truthful opinions.

Did you even read this?--VASTLY IMPROVED GLOBAL STANDING.

In 2009 and 2010, the first two years of the Obama administration, the U.S. now once again is out in front.

            Republican/T-Baggers don't respect the minority

FYI: Many people especially in Wisconsin regret voting Republican. This to me suggests most people think the Republican/T-Baggers are a bunch of bats. Next Republican/T-Baggers will be trying to bring back Debtor's Prisons I'll bet. Could this be? If you twitch the curtain back you'll be surprised at the darkness that lurks there.

Mickey Not to worry Bev was only trying to explain why a Big City Girl and a Old Country F@rt could take such great pleasure in getting together for a drink and a conversation. Only way you can insult an old Redneck is to call him late for breakfast and I see that Red has already taken care of that. Your sense of humor and perspective is appreciated and will be looked forward to in coming days up on the Hill.

Humanitarian Alert. The killing of civilians is getting worse. Why doesn't Obama admit what is going on in Syria? Why doesn't his stance on freedom fighters apply in Syria? Double speak from Obama as usual. You can stop a massacre if you act now. Your words, not mine.

Verno, It is not my plan that matters now is it? What I am asking is a fair question. If the justification is valid in one conflict, why not another? Questioning any President's policies is not bashing. This is something Obama supporters seem to not understand.

Bev, make myself sick? No way. If you think for one minute that just because I am willing to address issues that I feel strongly about it will have any impact on my health, you are wrong. But, thanks for caring. Even at my age, I run 2 miles a day. Old soldiers never die, they just fade away. Not yet in my case. This is fun to me. I enjoy this. Can't you tell?

One of the biggest entitlements is defense spending. It's off the table. We have geopolitical needs to address that in the long run will make our nation safer with more democracies seeding the globe -- more people talking out their problems instead of dictators suppressing them and their problems. So why don't we face the music and raise taxes to cover those expenditures? Sure, it will depress the economy. When you are not borrowing foreign money, money does not come in to create business and jobs. But why can't we earn that? The longer we put off cutting our debt the bigger chunk the interest bill will take out of what the government spends every year. Let the dollar drop so our exporters can bring in money by selling product.

We are currently 14.3 trillion dollars in debt!!! Independant, I guess that is what happens when you take a SURPLUS, go looking for missing WMD, OIL you still can't get, AND give FOUR TAX-CUTS to the RICHEST Americans. ADD TRIILLIONS to debt by passing spending bills by RECONCILIATION between 2002 and 2006 and NOW just ABSOLUTELY HATE that word. Maybe we can get a loan from GE. OVER $5 BILLION in U. S. INCOME, result? NO TAX OBLIGATION and over $300 MILLION TAX REFUND. They are kissing George Bush's feet.

You really have zero understanding of most things. All you know how to do is complain and rant about this or that. Typical looser. The current tax code is the problem. The tax code is over 7000 pages long, not very easy to understand and confusing. You should relate to that as you support the healthcare law which is exactly the same. GE paying zero corporate taxes is an issue. However, what GE was able to accomplish is legal. Lets hope the government will audit their returns and make sure. All your rants and hateful dialog does nothing, which seems to be your style. The individual tax laws need to be reformed as well as it is just as unfair as the corporate tax code. You may want to suggest to Obama that he speak directly to Jeff Emelt, after all Jeff is one of Obama's advisors.

This has nothing to do with Media Matters being biased, it has to do with forcing Fox to come clean about who and what they are, FACTUALLY, which is an alien term to no jo and Fox. If no jo had EVER been in Europe, she would recognize Fox for the tabloid style news endemic there, but that would require TRAVEL. Later, Feisty!

The Rebals won a major victory overnight in a key Gee-I'm-Daffy occupied town, coaltion jets took out 20 tanks as the rebels advanced. Rebels were seen dancing on the tanks chanting 'Thank you Obama, Thank you Cameron'

All without a single boot on the ground and without the US having to take the lead. Yes 'Thank You Obama" indeed.

The delay for consultation, consensus and coalition building (or dither as the GOP call it), may actual be helping.
It stretched Gee-i'm-daffy forces across Lybia making them easier to pick off. I am hoping they are less conentrated in Tripoli where the real battle will take place.

There is one huge difference between Libya and every other country. I am surprised that I have heard no one mention it. Kaddafi has admitted culpabilty for the Lockerbie murders. Further, Libya has a group of its own citizens fighting and dying to win their freedom. Kaddafi agreed to pay reparations to the rest of the world for Lockerbie but has not done so. If fact, according to documents leaked by Wikileaks, he was extorting the money for that (bloodmoney) from Western and American companies that were going into Libya for business. And bush and Obama were acting as matchmakers setting American businesses up with this butcher. Shame on bush and Obama. I expect as much from the bush family. After all, they were okay with doing business with the Nazis during WWII. But I expected more from Obama. But there should be no troops on the ground in Libya. So far, Obama has gotten this one right. I just hope he doesn't fumble it. But Syria or Jordan? No way. Saudi Arabia? Absolutely not. The primary function of ANY government is to provide for the defense and well-being of their citizenry. These regimes under fire have every one failed and it's time for them to have their power stripped from them. Can anyone here remeber the Declaration of Independence? We should leave these countries alone and let them settle their problems. We have NO BUSINESS deciding who rules half-way around the world. If we hadn't started playing god over there after WWII , this mess might have already been resolved. Let them resolve it now. It's their part of the world. If it becomes necesary for us to combat our own government, how would we feel about China propping up Obama or Newt Gingrich or Haley Barbour or even worse, (shudder) Sarah Paler? Leave then alone.
