Bachmann jokes of spending, Norwegian mafia; Boehner unafraid

Quote of the Day: “This sounds like a light-hearted exchange, and I don’t think the Speaker is concerned that he’ll winding up ‘sleeping with the lutefisk’ at the hands of the Norwegian mafia.” -- Michael Steel, spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH).

From NBC’s Luke Russert and Catherine Chomiak
In an interview today on a Des Moines, Iowa, radio station, Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann (R-MN) awkwardly laughed when conservative Iowa radio host Jan Mickelson of 1040 WHO Radio made a mafia joke and asked what should be done to Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) if the House GOP does not strike funds used for the implementation of President Obama’s health-care reform legislation from an upcoming government funding bill. Mickelson seemed to joke about physical retribution.

The Exchange:

MICKELSON: You have the votes to pull the plug on the funding?

BACHMANN: We are working, we're trying to work with Republicans to get them on board with us.

MICKELSON: Why would you have to work with Republicans?!

BACHMANN: Well, because what it would mean is a showdown with President Obama. We would have to go toe to toe, eyeball to eyeball.

MICKELSON: Isn't that what we sorta sent you guys there.

BACHMANN: Of course, and Congressman King (Rep. Steve King R-IA) and I say now is the time to have the fight. We have the fight with President Obama.

MICKELSON: Is your Leadership this biggest impediment over this? Is Boehner a problem?

BACHMANN: We need to get the Republicans on board. We are talking to leadership.

MICKELSON: Is that a yes? (laughs)

BACHMANN: We are talking to leadership and we're telling leadership...

MICKLESON: I'm not really trying to get you in trouble, but...

BACHMANN: (laughs) Thank you Jan. I do appreciate your sensitivity to that. The most important thing right now is that we try to save the country by getting rid of this funding.

MICKELSON: So, what do you want to do to Boehner? We know people who know people.

BACHMANN: (laughs) What I want to do is to is to be able to get them to start fighting President Obama and defunding Obamacare.

MICKELSON: A little known fact, that Norwegians have a mafia.

BACHMANN: Ooooh, and we are tough, tough people.

MICKELSON: Not really fast moving uhh

BOTH: (laugh)

Boehner spokesman Michael Steel saw the remarks as jocular saying to NBC News: “This sounds like a light-hearted exchange, and I don’t think the Speaker is concerned that he’ll winding up ‘sleeping with the lutefisk’ at the hands of the Norwegian mafia.”

There has been friction between the House GOP Leadership and Rep. Bachmann since the November mid-terms. Prior to the massive Republican victory, Bachmann was unwilling to commit to voting for Boehner as Speaker of the House due to questions about his conservatism. Bachmann also attempted to run for the Chairmanship of the House GOP Conference against Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-TX), who was supported by Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA).

Last week, Bachmann expressed displeasure with House GOP leaders for not committing to cutting all government funds used to implement the nation’s health-care reform law, saying to National Journal, “I think there's going to be a fake appeasement with the Planned Parenthood thing and a fake appeasement with the 'Obamacare' thing."

House conservatives have been adamant that all funding needed for the new law be stripped of any spending bills that keep the government running. If the House GOP leadership were to do such a thing, it would be a non-starter in the Democratically controlled Senate and, thus, bolster the possibility of a government shutdown -- something that could reflect poorly politically on the GOP in 2012.

But leadership on both sides emphasize they are not interested in a shutdown.

I haven't seen the Right even discuss creating jobs, only intrusive moral legislation which campaigns against Women, Teachers, Muslims, and the Poor.

Pathetic.

Umm...Was anyone actually expecting anything different? That's like the Democrats running on free automatic weapons and RPG's for every US citizen and then believing they would actually do it after being elected.

The same moonbats who defend Bill Maher's joke about Sarah Palin being a "twat" will soon attack Bachman for not walking out of this radio interview, when a radio host joked about physical retribution, and the serious subject of the Norweigan mafia...

I take that as being in on the joke.

Well, would you prefer Bill Maher said Sarah Palin "taint a twat" rather than say--"a lip smacking fool"?

You know I initially thought they were ignoring the Energy issues, and Obama's Drill, Brazil comments cause energy is a non-starter for Obama, and well, this is First Read.

But now I'm thinking it's just these folks have not clue. Dominico,Murray, Russert could tell a cash flow statement from a balance sheet so will do everything they can to avoid any economic issue as it relates to politics.

But Bachmann, Pailin, and O'donnell - they are frigging experts.

May be true about the House, although I see evidence to the contrary on energy, but where is Sherriff Joe? Bombs be a' flying and he's MIA. Seems strange.

Maybe Dominico can go find him? Or are you working on another Bachmann/Palin/O'donnell story for later today?

Did Maher REALLY say twat? Didn't he mean twit? One letter difference, and a BIG difference in meaning. I can't believe he'd be that stupid. Maybe he really meant twat . . .

Maybe Sarah is too much of a twit to know what a twat is, so she didn't mind his comment.

It is quite possible that Bill Maher did utter that word but it is more likely that the wrong word was attributed to him by those who do not like Bill. Let's see a source for the word used. Until proven otherwise, past experience tells me the poster was willfully lying about which word was used.

. . . and IMHO, use of that word is/should definitely be a code violation resulting in deletion and/or banning for a period as a particularly vile and degrading word. I can deal with most gutter language and have used it myself (even on this blog), but some words are just too degrading for me to use in almost all circumstances, but especially in an open forum like this. Bill can use it on his show (you do have to pay for it and you get what you pay for) and it may be appropriate in certain circumstances (very few). But here? Not so much.

The poster/s who used it owe an apology to everyone, and especially the ladies, for even repeating that word. I doubt it will happen as it originally came from one of the more immature regular posters on here. It seems there is another immature poster who is excited by it's use and should also apologize (not you gv-Kailua, but you could have avoided using it).

DBO - just got back from lunch - Basketball at Y from 11:00-12:30, then a quick sandwich. All done and just finalized a fairly large settlement from Monday on a case that was four years old and has attorney's fees in excess of $400K, plus settled another this morning. So all in all - a mighty productive day.

But be warned the might Aztecs start at 4:15, so I'm not long for this place.

But man - glad I didn't miss the beating our man 3Wolves dropped on the last thread. FYI libbies stay clear of 3Wolves on military issues. He, umm, is literally sleeping on the high ground on those issues.

So DBO - It was kinda funny the first time, but a unilateral re-post? Smells a touch of desperation, no?

Nope. Not net worth. Hell, even Michael Moore has the big simolleans, and I bet there are many that wouldn't consider him to be a great achievr.

Let me see howe they do in their campaigns (if the run) and I might be able to provide a more precise assesment. Now, if someone quits their job half wyay through, after promising their supportes their hard work on their behalf, well...... let me think on this one some more.

Spanky - not to interrupt the love fest; but weren't you just professing your outrage at the use of the word twat and now you want to compare knockers?

Are you this clueless or is it when you want to be funny there are no limits; but when an actual COMEDIAN IS funny - well, there should be some boundaries?

I saw Maher say it, on Real Time Friday night. In the context that he used it, while 'shocking' it was kind of funny.

Certainly no worse than anything TRUMP said during his roast on Comedy Central last week. And HE'S running for President.

Class and taste are both subjective. Net worth certainly doesn't determine it.

Living in Iowa, I can tell you that the republican party here is no longer moderate or even close to moderate. In yesterday's newspaper was a cartoon. I can't read the cartoonist signature to give credit but it sums up what to expect from Iowa's Republican 2012 Caucus.

In the upper, left corner is "Starting Gate", there is a rural church pictured in the center. The sign above the door reads, "First Evangelical Church of the Iowa Caucuses". Next to the door is another sign, "Prepare to be Tested". The barbed-wire fence surrounding the rural church has a sign, "Caution, Electric Fence".

Don't be surprised if Iowa picks a Bachmann, Huckabee, Palin type.

(I wonder who winds up paying THOSE costs? Surely not us consumers? You, of all people surely woudln't want to see THAT kind of 'redistribution', right? Hard-earned profits of honest corporations going to lawyers, so they have to jack up their prices on their hard-working customers, and all?? An outright win I understand, but settlements usually smell a little bad, somehow. Kind of like 'legal extortion' or something. Jody- I lived in Iowa 26 years ago, them moved to Indiana. I used to heckle the 'Hoosiers' about how far ahead Iowa was as far as education went, and how much more 'live-and-let-live' the attitudes of Iowans was. Hell, the first house we bought out there, the forms still had us sign as "buyer" and 'wife'. Not 'spouse- 'wife'. I moved back not long ago, and found the place (Iowa) to be way behind many of the other states in education, and people more concerned about the personal lives of their neighbors, and a hell of a lot less 'live-and'let-live. And I had to ask myself; are the two phenomena related?

(oh, and by the way- Grassley was just entering his political position when I left. He's still there, now that I'm back)

DBO - is this to me?

If yes, stop speculating it's bad. Business litigation involving fraud has nothing to do with "redistribution." And when the other side, the former managing general partner [did you catch that big guy?] has to admit under oath and on the record that he is a perjurer, then settlement is a real good thing.

But you keep tilting at the boogeymen in you mind buddy, it's really funny.

And psst - you can't insure against fraud. Go ask you boss about his E and O policy. You might even learn a little something. :(

Drive by. I know. I left Iowa for California in 1973, returning in 95 to a much changed State, thanks to Governor Branstad's disastrous policies. I'm still wondering why voters picked him again when they were so happy to see him gone. Well, I know how, too many democrats and independents stayed home.

Clara. Yes, they picked Huckabee in 2008; but apparently Iowans like a good retread--we've got Branstad back after having him 16 years.

Bachmann does realize she too is a Republican, right? If she wants to be an Independent she should run as such.

I don't see anything controversial in Bachmann's exchange with some right wing radio talker. It was kind of silly, but not funny. However, Boehner's spokesman's retort about ‘sleeping with the lutefisk’ was pretty funny. Humor isn't entirely dead in the GOP, I guess.

Where is the outrage at spending billions to interfere with other nations internal affairs ? Who can we justify the outrageous spending by the Military at the behest of both political parties cut taxes and then attack social programs ? We can afford to be the worlds policeman but can't afford health care.

In my opinion Boenher, Bachman and the Tea party are politicians in the nastiest sense of the word. The interests of the average citizen is being ignored and eventually, just like in Egypt the people will tire of this BS and throw them all out.

You know, with Bachmann, Palin, Gengrich, Huckabee, Pawlenty, Romney, Boehner, McConnell and all the other idiots on the right wing the republicans have become a laughing stock. Every time I hear something come out of their mouths I'm shocked at the stupidity. You couldn't dream up a comedy with a cast of these clowns in a million years.

Where is the outrage over $600 billion in tax breaks for the rich while pulling the WIC milk from babies mouths, I thought Republicans LOVED all those babies born to unwed mothers.

Bachman is only in the race to make Palin seem intelligent.
